CHAIRMAN’S CHAT - DEREK HAYCOCK Hello Everyone, After the madness of October with Club events, November was fairly quiet in comparison with only Glyn’s overnight run to Wanganui and by all accounts a fantastic time was had by all. 25/35 year awards night was a great time to reward some of our great members for their efforts with the Branch over the years. Unfortunately Maurice Entwisle and Judy Callesen were unable to make it due to health reasons. The Christmas party combined with the 50 year awards night is definitely shaping up well. Glyn has a great run planned beforehand and with our new National President George Kear coming up from Christchurch for the event it will be a day not to be missed. The New Year’s Day run is meeting at Duddings Lake halfway between Bulls and Turakina next year and if previous years are anything to go by sixty odd cars will be in attendance. The Veteran and two-wheel brake vintage is up in February and it would be great to see some local support for this run to make it worthwhile! Highland Fling 2024 preparations are progressing well with over 70 entries now, so closing in on the 100 vehicle cutoff. Manawatu members need to up their game on this as we have twice the number of entries from Wanganui than we have from our own branch!! The big news for the Fling is Bill Hohepa and his wife are planning on coming down to film this event for their TV show. Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Regards Derek Haycock

DO YOU KNOW OF A GOOD DESTINATION FOR A RUN OR A RALLY ? THE BRANCH IS LOOKING FOR MEMBERS TO ORGANISE RUNS / OUTINGS / RALLIES. DIFFERENT ORGANISERS CAN ADD VARIETY TO OUR BRANCH OUTINGS. MEMBERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VOLUNTEER TO ORGANISE A RUN, AN OUTING OR A RALLY. THE COMMITTEE CAN ASSIST YOU WITH YOUR ACTIVITY. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ORGANISE A BRANCH OUTING CONTACT EITHER THE CLUB CAPTAIN OR THE VICE CLUB CAPTAIN.

SECRETARY’S SCRIBBLES - CATHY CLEMENTS Hello Everyone, My calendar is telling me that there are only 35 days left until Christmas Day! Where has the year gone! An excellent weekend away on the Overnighter at the beginning of November. Awesome company, great scenery and roads driven, too many stories told, raucous laughter, wine, beer and pizza, and for some... the odd tipple or two or was it three of Brandy!. Thank you to all you amazing people for such a fun time... Roll on the next one! If you have never been on one of Glyn’s Overnighters you need to consider joining us in 2024 for the next one! You will not be disappointed! (Write up from Viv and Owen Reid elsewhere, worth a read!) Glyn and I have just returned from a holiday in Melbourne, Australia. A good catch up for me with my family, plus a weekend spent in Bendigo at the annual Bendigo Swap Meet. What can I say... Been there, done that! Derek Haycock had given me a list of interesting “car” places Glyn might like to visit. The main one of interest was XXXX Antiques/Mantiques in Castlemaine. Glyn was very happy and managed a few purchases. Too much to see, too much to buy! I had to draw the line at the idea of a shipping container to accommodate purchases! Saturday was the day for hunting out all those treasures at the Bendigo Swap Meet! 32 Degree temperatures, (the heat was debilitating!), a lot of men on stalls selling s**##! I think their wives probably told them to clean out the garage! No girl treasures to be found so I took some comfort under a tree after an hour and left Glyn to search until his heart was content! He only lasted for 2 hours then we headed off for the afternoon for beers/wine back at the Motel with the air conditioning on high! We didn’t bother to go back for Sunday, temperatures were much the same! Wednesday 22 Nov is our 25/35 year awards presentation at Club Night. Sunday 3 December is our Christmas Party and 50th year presentations. You need to pre-register for the Xmas Party please. I’m looking at starting up a “Ladies Coffee Morning” in the New Year. Probably a Wednesday morning at this stage, alternating between Feilding and Palmerston North venues. If you are interested, drop me an email. Whanganui Branch Ladies meet monthly and I am very keen to join them as well. It is a great way to meet other members outside of the Branch.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year! May the holiday season bring you special moments and happy memories! Stay safe on the roads. Regards - Cath Page 8

CLUB CAPTAIN’S CORNER - GLYN CLEMENTS Hello Everyone What a full-on year it has been, and there is still more to come next year, so make the most of it people and get out there motoring! Sunday 3rd December is our last Sunday Jaunt for the year and will end at the Club Rooms for our Christmas Dinner and 50 year badge presentations. You MUST pre-register for dinner. New Years Day is Len Haycock’s Picnic Event (details elsewhere) and its also the Gumboot Rally in Taihape which is my favourite event of the year (happens to be Cath’s birthday as well). Plenty of dusty roads and a great group of people (I know how to treat a girl on her birthday!). At the end of January is the Whanganui Branch - Burma Rally on Wellington Anniversary Weekend. On Friday (19th), Wellington and Horowhenua Branches are organising a “Monte Carlo” Rally to Whanganui from various start points with a common lunch venue being our Branches Club Rooms in Kelvin Grove between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm. If you would like to see a few different cars, come along during the lunch break or better still, enter the day’s event (contact Verdon Heath - email: 2cv2stroke@gmail.com Some Manawatu entries for “Burma” itself would be appreciated. First Sunday Jaunt for next year will be 4th February and the following Sunday (11th) is our Veteran Rally. Best Wishes over the holiday period - Be safe out there! Regards

A WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS Manawatu VCC members are pleased to welcome three new members to our branch. - Robert Borrows - who brings his 1958 Austin Healey 100-6 to the club. - Stanley Fraser - who brings his 1934 Chevrolet Standard to the club. - Peter Clouston - who brings his 1929 Ford A to the club. We look forward to seeing you all at a branch outing soon.

‘OVERNIGHTER’ REPORT - VIVIENNE AND OWEN REID Wanganui - 4th & 5th November 2023 On Saturday the 4th November, 17 VCC members in 7 cars met at Grammar Street Kimbolton, Cathy and Glyn Clements Barn house for a delicious morning tea with an array of muffins and beverages to get us ready for the journey ahead. 10:30am after getting our Saturday November 4th 2023 Kimbolton to Whanganui instructions we were off, headed towards Taihape Domain which was our lunch destination. Our car lead the way through Kimbolton, Apiti then towards Mangaweka until in the rear vision mirror we could see the bulk of cars had turned down a road. Turning around thinking we had read the instructions wrong we also turned around only to have them pass us heading through the gorge of greywacke almost reaching Mangaweka but then turned right into Kawhatau Valley Road meandering towards Taihape. We had a great lunch stop under a huge redwood tree in the Taihape Domain. In the afternoon we headed north of Taihape turning into Pukenaua Road and then onto the start of the gravel roads, Ridge Road which was true to it’s name as we appeared to be as high as the Ruahines which we could see in the distance. At the top of Ridge Road there were spectacular views of the valleys below. We continued on gravel down through the Turakina Valley Road ending up at the Tangiwai disaster memorial site where 151 people lost their lives travelling on the train Christmas Eve 1953. The site is a credit to those involved in it’s construction and maintenance, and although we have driven past many times in the past, we have never had the time to stop, but we did on Saturday. From there we then travelled to Whanganui via Fields track to our motel The Burwood in Whanganui. Saturdays travel was approx. 198 miles. Saturday night was a blast with entertainment, drinks and tea being held in Cathy and Glyns motel room. All 17 of us in there made for a cosy, relaxed and loud night, with some of us slipping away to check on the black caps game. Pat had his tea heating on a pot with water and by the time he returned the pot was a little worse for wear and a room full of smoke. Cathy gave him some tips as to how to clean this up, to hopefully restore it. Someone else who shall remain nameless said to me they don’t remember how they got to bed, but they took their PJ’s but never got into them and slept in their clothes. Page 17

November ‘Overnighter’ Report : Continued

Sunday started off with Pat having misplaced his wallet and a hunt for the wallet ensued. After the entire room being turned upside down, a few of us went to help look for a second time and noticed his back pocket had something in it. After enquiring if it was in the pocket, Pat replied, I never use that pocket. (A great demo on captivated thinking). One vehicle needed an oil top up so a quick trip downtown to buy some oil. After the shopping trolley full of empty bottles was put in the recycling, we were off heading up the Whanganui river towards St Joseph’s Church at Jerusalem. The journey up River Road was fantastic with excellent examples of native bush with plenty of Nikau Palms amongst the bush. A very picturesque area that had a very narrow road in places and very few Did we really drink that much??!! Or is it a homeless man looking for breakfast! houses or farms along the way. St Joseph’s church was an interesting stop where most walked around the church and grounds before heading for our lunch stop at Ohakune. After lunch we met at the big carrot for a photo shoot, and cell phone upgrade. From Ohakune we travelled to Waiouru then followed SH1 until just north of Mangaweka where we turned for home onto Ruahine Road travelling through Rangiwahia, Kimbolton and Kiwitea, finally ending up at the Cheltenham pub for refreshments. Thanks to Cathy and Glyn for organising the overnighters, we were on the one last year to Napier, and this one to Whanganui was equally enjoyable with lots of laughs along the way and new roads we have never been on before.

THE AUBURN - (US) 1900-1937 Auburn Automobile Co., Auburn, Ind.

One of the most famous of all American cars, the Auburn first appeared in 1900 when Frank and Morris Eckhart of the Eckhart Carriage Company in Auburn. Ind., began experimenting with hand-built cars, selling them in and around Auburn. The first production car appeared in 1903 as a single-cylinder chain-driven runabout with the engine under the body and the fuel tank under the bonnet. A touring model was added in 1904 and in 1905, 2-cylinder cars were introduced and continued until 1910, in which year a four-cylinder type with a Mercedes-shaped radiator and a Rutenber engine was introduced. Both open and closed bodies were available on this larger chassis. In 1911 Auburn bought the Zimmerman Manufacturing company which had been producing high wheelers under that name and continued to manufacture them. Auburn introduced a six-cylinder car with electric lights as standard equipment in 1912. Right- or left- hand steering was optional in 1914, and from 1914 to 1919, 4and 6-cylinder cars were available with Teetor, Rutenber and Continental engines. In 1919, the company introduced its Beauty Six model featuring streamlined bodies with bevelled edges on the sides. In 1921 this became the 6-51 sports model with cycle-type mudguards, step-plates instead of running boards, disc wheels and a small luggage compartment behind the front bumper. Nickel trim was also featured, as well as leather upholstery and an abundance of bright colour schemes. The Auburns of 1923 were powered by a Continental engine for the 6-43 or a Weideley overhead valve six for the larger model 6-63, or Supreme. In 1924, balloon low-pressure tyres were available on Auburns at extra cost. Up until now production figures had seldom exceeded four thousand units per year. In 1924 E.L. Cord bought the Auburn company and from that point on, the Auburn took a leading position in the American automobile business. Cord had the entire range redesigned by J.M. Crawford, and the 1925 line consisted of four, six, and eight cylinder models. The new cars had two-tone colour schemes and a novel belt moulding which extended at the cowl over the top of the bonnet with its apex at the radiator cap. The cars were handsome and well built, although An Auburn 8-88 Roadster advertisement in 1926

The Auburn - Continued

some of the larger models had ugly six spoked iron wheels more suited to truck design. These were soon discontinued and normal spoke or wire wheels became standard. The basic lines of the 1925 model were so advanced that the design remained practically the same until 1930. The four cylinder car was dropped in 1927 and sales climbed steadily. In 1931 Auburn was perhaps the sleekest car in the company's history and sales reached a peak of 28,103 that year. The 1931 StraightEight was augmented in 1932 with a new 6.4-litre V12, both cars being equipped with a Columbia duel-ratio rear axle. This V-12 was the first 12cylinder car to sell under $1000 and probably the only 1932 Auburn 12-160 one, too. These lines were continued in 1933. In 1934 a new design replaced the basic 1931 type and a six was added to the range. In 1935 a new and handsome sports design was announced and a supercharged line of Auburns augmented the 653 six and 851 eight. The pointed-tail 150bhp models 1932 Auburn 8-100A guaranteed to have been test driven 100 miles per hour. The cars remained unchanged for 1936 and although a new range of Auburn's had been planned for 1937 no cars were produced. FROM: THE COMPLETE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MOTORCARS 1885 TO THE PRESENT. NEW ZEALAND REGISTRATION PLATES AND LABELS Posting and images found on the VCC Facebook page by Ken Foot and forwarded for sharing in the Tourer.

NZ Number Plates - a bit of discussion about the issue of Permanent Plates - the Aluminium letters numbers on Black background - first issued in July 1964 to cars. They replaced the Black Numbers on Yellow Plates issued in 1961, that were the last of the 5 yearly plates in use since 1941. Prior to 1941, plates had been issued annually since 1925 when the "National" system of plates replaced the issue by local Authorities, Councils and Road Boards, that appears to have started around 1905. ▪ Images of Plates from 1905 to the 1961 issue. (see page 31 of this Tourer) ▪ The Plate issue in 1964 - from the NZ Herald - presume similar news was published by other Newspapers. It shows where plates were initially sent for Issue. (see page 32 of this Tourer) ▪ List of Issue of Plates from 1964 onwards - it is an approximate list of issue years, as has been mentioned on this group. (see page 33 of this Tourer) It seems that plates up to E and F were issued earlier than in this list. ▪ Once the 1964 onward plates were issued a Sticker was then issued every year. A series of Stickers from 1965 onwards. (see page 34 of this Tourer) In 2021 Graham Freeman, wrote a great article in the NZ Memories Magazine - Graham has a huge collection of plates himself. It is well worth a read by Vintage and Classic Car/Motorcycle people. The images help with dating photographs too !!. The last image has some 1965 onwards plates - the Reflective Black on White plates started in 1987 with the letter N prefix series. Cheers Roger Dowding Page 30

CONTRIBUTIONS FOR ‘THE TOURER’ Because the Tourer is the Magazine for your branch - it is your magazine. Should you come across anything that you think could interest your fellow members - or if you wish to contribute an article on any of your motoring projects (past or present) - or your recent participation in runs or events with other branches, please do not hesitate to send it along with any photographs which you may have, to the editor.

PARTS SHED - GARY MILLAR The Manawatu Branch of the VCC is committed to helping you with the restoration and ongoing maintenance of your valued vintage & classic vehicle, endeavouring to maintain a supply of quality second hand tools and parts covering all ages and types of early vehicles. Any time is a good time to declutter your sheds and you and your friends are invited to donate any unwanted old car and motorcycle parts to the branch so that we can trade them onto vintage enthusiasts who are looking for that rare part needed for completing a restoration or keeping a car on the road. At the Parts Shed all parts are priced to move off the shelves. Gary looks forward to assisting you with finding that unusual, rare and valuable part or tool which will help you restore and maintain your pride and joy. Contact Gary on: (06) 354 8298 or gw.millar.pn@gmail.com

SCRAP METAL COLLECTION - GARY MILLAR A large bin for disposal of old scrap metal including your old (clean) household tins etc. is located on the eastern side of the main parts shed (i.e. between the two parts sheds). Money raised from the sale of scrap helps with the ongoing maintenance of the clubrooms and parts sheds. Page 40

TOURER TRADER - BUY, SELL & EXCHANGE FOR SALE : The North Shore Branch has recently reviewed our various project vehicles and have decided that our Dennis Fire Pump should be made available to an organisation or individual better suited to the restore the pump. The pump is available for a nominal fee of one NZ Dollar. It is a rare historic item and we want to ensure it goes to a suitable home.
