The Daffodill Show N Shine, a new format for us is over for another year, and a very successful Event.
Let me take the opportunity to thank those businesses who fronted up to fund the feature in the Waimea and Nelson Weekly - your support is fabulous and very much appreciated.
If you didn't see the feature check it out on line but please turn to pages 30 & 31 to see those businesses that helped us support the Nelson Cancer Society.
Please take note of page three, where it is very obvious we are in need of more members to take a turn in helping to run the branchwe now have four vacancies we need to fill urgently.
Club Captain & Treasurer being the most pressing, both Rob and Ian are only too happy to sit with you for a while to get you into the roles - but please give it some consideration. Being involved is very rewarding and you also make new friends and acquaintances.
Also note Situation Vacant advert on page 11 for a Swapmeet booking person
Kind Regards Ray

VICE CHAIR - Report
You might be thinking it’s a bit odd Joanne writing instead of Mike.
The reason being is that Mike has been away for a few weeks in the North Island catching up with family but also attending the VCC AGM. He made it back in time to attend the Daffodil Rally
The AGM went well, with a lot of talk around the constitution and decisions that need to be made, as with all things it takes time to get right but bit by bit they are getting there and the club will be better for it. I am sure Mike will tell us more in the coming months,
Wow, wow I am writing this just after the Daffodil Show and Shine. What a day, it was amazing. I turned up early and already there was a whole group of members beavering away getting everything ready putting out signs, setting out chairs and making sure everything was going to plan.
Then it was time for a quick cuppa before everyone manning the decks and greeting the owners of some beautiful machines.
Very quickly the car park was full, and the happy owners were wandering around enjoying the wide selection of cars. The queues for food carts were long but worth the wait and left plenty of time to look some more at the cars.
Thank you to Rob and Karen for pulling a successful event together. Thank you to the VCC members who showed up and worked long and hard to make the event what it was.
I was so encouraged to see so many club members show up with their car to display and pitched in to help, and the bonus seeing so many clubs come together to support a worthy cause.
Sadly, this past month we said farewell to Gordon Dacombe who passed away with Cancer. He was an inspiration to us with the way he lived life to the full, always looking for a new challenge, something to fix or someplace to go, he loved to see new places and get lost in the wilderness, he enjoyed a good rugby game, movie and book, he loved spending time with people especially over a good cuppa.
It was a real tribute to him that so many of us turned up in club cars and formed a circle of honour to farewell our dear friend. His memory lives on with monthly “Gordons Mystery Lunches” and the Coast 2 Coast tour which I have on good authority is planned for 7th November next year.
Looking forward its not long to Christmas and after that rolling around very quickly is the Clubs annual fundraiser the swap meet. So now’s the time to start thinking about how you can help and if you want a site.
We are in urgent need of someone with a few hours to spare (I know we are all very busy) and a bit of computer know how. We are looking for someone who can look after the website swap meet booking system. I promise you full training will be provided; it is only for a few months and requires a few hours a week though obviously more time will be needed closer to the time. If you are interested, please contact any committee member and they will happily help you with your enquiry.
Well, that’s all from me, until next time Joanne. Ps
1. What happens when Kermit the Frog’s car breaks down? It gets toad.
2. Why is Miss Piggy such a bad driver? Because all she does is hog the road.
3. What kind of vehicle does a chicken drive? A coop. Why can’t motorcycles do push-ups? Because they’re always two -tired
Grasskhana
Saturday 5th October - Quail Valley
Briefing at 9.30am followed by start at 10.00am
Lunch BYO - 30mins between 12.00 - 1.00pm
Finish approx. 3.00pm with afternoon tea
This event is becoming more common amongst Branches of the VCC, this involves both driving skills and the ability to time your run.
You will start with a briefing and the requirement to sign an Indemnity form that will be provided to you on the day.
This is a test of driving skills rather than a race, you complete the courses (an example on the left) having been shown the diagram, as fast or slow as you are comfortable with, this is timed and recorded by the marshals. The rest of the entrants do the same then you do the run for the second time trying to match the time.
There are no prizes for the fastest, as safety and respect for your vehicle is the most important thing. Depending on the number of entries we will try to have 5-6 different courses for the day.
Each car will be given a number and you will run in order of these numbers to make it easier for the judges to keep the timing record.
The course is started with the front wheels behind the line of the start/finish cones (cones are the small circles on the diagram) and finish with the finish line between front and rear axles. This event is open to all VCC eligible vehicles and is a good chance for Trials car to get an additional outing for the year.
Looking forward to seeing both competitors and spectators on the day.

In the tradition of Gordon Dacombes unique sense of humour and interest. -
Those who went had a ball, those who didn’t missed a visit to an amazing collection of history & inventiveness not to mention the excentric quirkiness which made this such a fascinating and entertaining run.

Daffodill Day Show N Shine
First car rolled in about 11.00, Saturday, while we were getting ready! Was a good sign for Sunday that we were going to get one car anyway. A great team of helpers Saturday to get bins out, signs and gazebos up.
Sunday was fine! We were watching the weather for weeks, and rapt that we got a fine day, even if cloudy. It didn’t deter people from coming along. A huge thankyou to all the helpers on the day. Is brilliant having so many people put their hand up to help. A we done to our vintage car team, our great musos , The Grey Stripes, Phil Steans and Waynes mate Bob on the keyboard, who created the atmosphere. And cancer society staff and volunteers. Also, thanks to those preselling raffle tickets, Charil and team sold most of the Cancer Society tickets prior, so that was a $3500 bonus really.
For those that didn’t get there, you will be sorry you missed it. We had an awesome collection of makes and models. We filled the grounds, thankfully the campervans had moved, or would have made it extremely tight.
The cars just rolled in, and from the Moutere Hop, Shane confirmed there were 103 cars. Roy did a bit of a car count after these had arrived and between 12 and 12.30, including the car park before the gate, was 452, seems somewhere around 368 to 397 inside the gate. (Some rolled in and left earlyish too)
Highlights included seeing Lynette riding tandem on Robs bike. Queues of people at the food carts, (made it worthwhile them being here too). The steady stream of vehicles coming in. Heaps of people enthusing over the various vehicles, cups of tea on the go, and the general camerarderie.
We are always conscious that there are things to be improved on…. So appreciate if you would please let the committee know. But, we are rapt with the day.
A huge thank you from Rob and Karen.

Gordon Dacombe’s Funeral
There would be next to no one in the Nelson Branch that had no associated with Gordon, evidenced so well by the turn out of members and their vehicles who tended their respects at his recent funeral. Gordon would have been quietly stoked.
A comment by Dale Shattock at the funeral , I thought so apt I need to print is here. “Gordons Brother ,Lloyd is the undertaker, but Gordon was the overtaker” Ed.
