Mid month Run to Moeraki

The North Otago Branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand Inc.

Acting Chairman's Report

Another month has passed by and it wasn't cold enough to stop the activity.

For the garage raid, Derrick did a great job organising interesting places to see, and the kitchen crew did an amazing job. 109 entries were a justified reward. Well done to that team!

We have a new member, Stuart Harvey aka G I Joe and he is capable of writing a good article, as in the last Distributor. Welcome to our branch Stuart.

At the garage raid, Ernest put out entry forms for the upcoming commercial rally. They all got taken and others left email addresses to get entry forms sent to them. Very encouraging for that committee.

The Daffodil Day fundraiser is taking shape, some members have offered to help, if I feel we need more you may get a tap on the shoulder, feel privileged if it happens to you.

On the 31st I am looking forward to introducing my new neighbour, John Fellow to the motorbike boys, yes he is one of them. He is restoring a Norton and a BSA, he also has a Kawasaki (modern) for his daily ride.

Looking forward to warmer weather. Gordon.

Just a Dash.

The objective of todays ride, apart from having fun on two wheels, was to get to the top of Mt Dasher. Our first attempt was thwarted by closed roads, but what you can’t go through, you go around and Robert soon had the three of us on Dunrobbin Rd making our ascent. The weather improved from the get go and got better the higher we climbed. We were well above the cloud / fog line when we stopped and we had great pastoral views, but could not see the sea due to lower atmospheric conditions.

I was riding with two very experienced riders today, it really showed in the lines they took when entering corners, I very much took note, as local riding conditions are unfamiliar to me, being new to the area and who better to learn from than Robert on his Clymph Spleed Win and Mac on his Glamaha, I was on my Wonton 750 Chowmando. [Asian / English motorcycle name translation courtesy of Mr Ah Lee, market gardener of repute ], who used to supply Oamaru with fresh produce from his Caledonian Rd market gardens, back when Adam was a pup.

Going up Mt Dasher brought back a lot of memories for Mac of his trail riding days and he stopped a couple of times to show us where incidents had happened. Memories are forever and we made some new ones today. Then we made a leisurely decent and after a good ride ended up at the ever hospitable Enfield Tavern, where we discussed motorbikes and a number of people that have sheds full of them, but don’t use them. What a shame, life’s for living, behind bars, on the open road.

Mac regaled us with stories of Mr Ah Lee, who as a lad, along with his friends, he would go and see and ask to see his shed full of bikes, which included, Wellocettes, Clyumps and Wontons. With pronunciation like that they sound more like a good meal than fine English two wheeled machinery.

Well the days are getting longer from now on and July is looming around the corner, what’s next on the motorcycling agenda? Time will tell, all I know is that it will be worth getting involved with, life on two wheels, what more could we ask for!!
