In Graeme’s absence

At the time of putting the Roadrunner together Graeme and Glenys are hopefully enjoying warmer temperatures as they take a break across the ditch for a couple of weeks.

On his return he will be preparing for the National AGM being held in Tauranga on the 9th to 11th of August.

At our first committee meeting for our new committee we discussed how we could make our Friday Club Nights more interesting –remembering that this is also the time to bring your thoughts and ideas along to share during the Branch Monthly Meeting which is held at 8.30pm following any quest speakers. Other options for events were also considered. E.g Fish and chip nights, Pea Pie and Pud nights, We welcome David Mills on board as our House Manager. He has offered to take on this role to take the pressure of Bill Partel who has done a sterling job over the years in this position. David comes with his own vision and ideas. Many of you will have already noticed the changes he has made – and there is more to come. I’m sure he would willingly accept any help with cleaning, and keeping things tidy around the clubrooms. Thanks to those who already do this.

Our clubrooms is not a residence so our rubbish disposal is not provided by the DCC. Please consider assisting with taking recycleables and rubbish to your home for disposal through your rubbish bins.

This is the draft calendar of events for the next 18 months. Your branch committee is asking for you as members to offer to help Organise some of these runs. This is a good way of seeing how these events work. A committee member will work with you to set the scene. Touch base with a committee member and let them know what you are able to assist with. Otherwise these events just won’t happen.

From your Branch Secretary…

Welcome to August – I hope you are all getting ready for the rally season starting with the Daffodil Rally for Cancer coming up on the 24th August. It would be great to have a large turn out from the branch. Plus, as it is open to the public spread the word to all your friends and family – the more the merrier. We are also looking for marshals to help at the start and finishing venues. Please let Marion know if you are able to help.

Below are some notes from our last branch committee meeting.

Proposed Bylaw Change

There is a proposed remit to be discussed at the August executive meeting & voted on by the Executive committee. The remit has been put forward by the club Vehicle Technical Committee to allow them to make the final decision on vehicle acceptability on Period Specials, modified production vehicles and Historic Racing Vehicles. Currently, the final decision for this class of vehicle rests with the management committee and this bylaw is to bring it in line with the other classes. Any application would still need to be approved by our branch committee / VIC Officers before submitting it for final approval.

Branch Facebook page

Did you know that along with the main club Facebook page, Otago branch also has its own page – search for Otago Vintage Car Club. I set it up a few years ago and have been doing my best to look after it however would love to add another administrator who can help with content etc. Please contact me if you are interested.

On here you can find the Daffodil Rally for Cancer event where you can confirm that you are “going”.

Branch Activities

We all know the success of the Wednesday morning noggin and natter plus the Monthly Thursday run however - what can we offer members that are not able to attend due to work or other commitments and that may also attract new members. Some suggestions are Fish & Chip nights, Breakfast at Emerson’s (or similar). Please let me know if these appeal to you so we can organise.

RESTORATION OFTHE YEAR

1970 HONDA1300 COUPE

OWNED BY BRUCE MURRAY

This car would have been imported from Australia since that was the only country they were exported to from Japan. The only known owner that had the car on the road was the general manager of the Automobile Association in Invercargill.

He wasn’t all that helpful with its history, only that he sold it to the Invercargill Honda car dealer who was going to restore it when things were quiet in the workshop, and it seems they stripped it down and did some work on the engine and not a lot more. It seems the dealership changed hands or general manager and when he discovered the Honda under a cover he told the workshop to get rid of it as they were not a museum. Bill Veitch heard about of it and managed to purchase it. He arrived in Invercargill with a trailer and managed to get it on the trailer as it had no wheels or suspension and loaded all the parts on and dragged it home. Once home it was a matter of getting all the suspension on and after getting the engine bay painted the engine was fitted. Several new body panels were found in Australia and Bill had some panel work done. The car was also repainted. Some time after this Bill was offered another identical Honda with a very low mileage on it and even still had the factory plastic protective covers in the door panels and sun visor. How could you turn that down! So the restoration slowed down and when Bill found some old stock genuine door rubbers, at eye watering prices in Holland of all places, I gave Bill a hand to fit the front and rear screen and did suggest we carry on and finish the car but that never happened and it sat for some months before I suggested that I should buy it and finish it. Once the deal was done the car was able to be driven to my garage and worked to finish assembling and piecing all the parts in their correct places, repairing seat frames and fitting all the upholstery. Now the car was finished it was a matter of having it inspected and complianced as it had been deregistered years ago when it was a lot easier to re-register vehicles. I did have all the paperwork that was required and it went through the inspection but was rejected on a wheel bearing and a couple of suspension rubbers and the big one is that sometime in its early life it had a hit in the rear guard. Yes, it had been repaired but not been done all that well, but since it wasn’t structural and it would have meant the paint would have to be touched up had I wanted to tidy it up. Now

 Restoration award continued from pg 13

 when body panel work gets rejected one had to get it inspected by a panel certifier. So I was told it would be best to take the car to Gore as this inspector was the man to see. So with a date and time arranged I trailered the car there as he was going to do it that day. So with a hire trailer and mates ute we arrived as arranged only to be told he had a meeting in Dunedin and would have to leave the car there and pick it up another day. That wasn’t going to happen as the place was a junkyard so it was back to my garage. Next was the local inspector who was new to the job. I arranged for him to look at the car at my garage and after a short time it was easy to see we were not going to come to a good outcome. First, he tried to find rust by trying to poke a screwdriver through the floor and failed to find any even after I told him there was none. Then the repaired area he wanted the rear guard removed so he could see the inner guard and I couldn’t do the work even so am a qualified panel beater and at that point we parted and he left. So the car sat for almost a year until another inspector turned up and he was qualified to inspect pre 1990 vehicles and was much easier to work with. After having the badly repaired area tidied up and having to remove the paint from the A pillars and fixing it, I finally got the car on the road.

Footnote: - Something that's worth thinking about if you are looking at buying a lapsed rego car that's maybe had the panel and paint done

CANCER SOCIETY – DAFFODIL DAY

MONDAY 26th OF AUGUST 2024

We have been invited to assist with delivering pre purchased daffodils to business’ and private homes around Dunedin again this year. This is happening on Monday 26th of August

We are needing approximately 12 drivers and or runners for the afternoon. Please allow a good two to three hours for this.

In the past we have encouraged members to bring their VCC eligible vehicles—but we need to be aware of some areas where access is not easy with the older cars. So feel free to bring your every day car for this,

A list will be available at the clubrooms for you to add your name in the appropriate time slot.

Please let Marion McConachie 0273387008 bmmcconachie@xtra.co.nz. know as soon as possible if you are willing to volunteer a few hours in the afternoon to assist with this.

I will then be in touch to confirm arrival times for you all. Thanks Marion

From the Editor

Well the first official Roadrunner has been produced. Now the next one is here. I would like to be able to feature articles from our members please. It would be great if you could put pen to paper and tell us a little about yourself, your vehicles, perhaps your career paths along with a photo or two the share with your fellow club members. A lot of you have got some interesting stories to tell. Like how you came to own those VCC vehicles you own, characters you may have come across during your life time and places you have visited.

Looking forward to hearing from you -Marion

RUDGE IT – DON’T TRUDGE IT

This was the sales motto of this famous British bicycle and motorcycle manu- facturer, founded in 1894 pro- ducing top quality sports ma- chines until December 1939.

The first motorcycle in 1911 was quite unusual for the times as it had inlet over exhaust valve configuration, and just a year later the Rudge Multi was produced with variable pulleys giving 21 forward gear ratios. Many small vehicles these days have this CVT system so what is new?

A 1000cc version with the Multi system was produced but by 1923 Rudge had built their own four speed gearbox.

There were a number of other make ‘four valve’ motorcycles built before the ‘Rudge Four’ but apart from the small 250cc fitted with a JAP motor, the 350 and 500 models came from the factory with four valve heads. Generally, the ‘Special’ had parallel valves, some ‘Ulster’ models had parallel inlets and radial exhaust valves.

It was 1929 when Graham Walker won the Ulster Grand Prix at 80mph –plus that the factory named their sports models the Ulster.

With the full radial 350 models Rudge took the first three places at the 1930 Junior TT at the Isle of Man and for years to follow this marque enjoyed a good number of wins and places at the IOM.

Around 1934 the Ulster had its head cast in aluminium bronze. It was December 1939 when motorcycle production ceased and the Rudge factory converted to radar manufacture for the war effort.

A number of new Rudge Ulsters were sold in Dunedin before the war, usually to people who could afford them. They were considerably more ex pensive than most other British machines of the era. – article supplied
