Well, it feels more like winter than spring but we keep on anyway. The Dunvegan Motorcycle rally went very well over the two days. The midweek outing to Waipiata was well attended and the night run was also well supported. The Autospectacular was a good success although we were unable to get enough veteran cars, so we procured three Honda cars thanks to Bill Veitch to commemorate fifty years of the Honda Civic. Thanks to those who supplied veteran cars. Please check on upcoming events and offer your help if you are not competing. We also need more members to think about organising the upcoming rallies or we will not be able to run so many, it is also good to have fresh minds as it gets hard trying to do something different. Hope the weather gets warmer so that more of you will be encouraged to attend the upcoming events. Graeme Duthie

51st Dunvegan Rally 2023 - Report

Liquid sunshine and a bitter wind met 40 odd intrepid Dunvegan entrants at the Chinese Gardens as bikes assembled for the 51st Dunvegan run on 30 September 2023. Off north this year with the time trial taking in Mt Cargill and the coast road to Karitane. The 30 mph nominated speed was a challenge in the blustery conditions but miraculously the rain stopped when the flag dropped and road conditions were dry from Karitane north. A diversion through Goodwood Road to Palmerston, a run over Horse Range road then up the coast through Kakanui, across to Weston and a lunch stop at the North Otago VCC rooms. Thanks to our hosts for a welcome cuppa and your hospitality! Only one casualty on the morning run as Robert Hutton’s Triumph 3T ‘bathtub’ succumbed to “electrical problems”. However, it’s hard to keep a good man down as he just shot to his home In Oamaru and picked up his lovely early 20s Harley Davidson to complete the afternoon. After a catch-up with old acquaintances who popped in to see the bikes, it was off on the afternoon section around the Kakanui Valley, Island Stream, back out to the coast, to Herbert and our digs at Camp Iona. As always, a convivial social time, lots of catching up, BBQ dinner and prize giving with all tucked up at a respectable hour. As always, a great selection of bikes with 4 from the USA, 16 British, 10 Japanese and 8 European. And, because I write the article, I am allowed to tell you my favourites. As always Joseph McLintock’s Henderson impresses me. Joseph has made some reliability focussed modifications to this machine which allows it to cruise at a respectable speed all day and, of course it runs like a Swiss watch. For entirely different reasons I took to Bruce Murray’s 1954 BSA twin. It was stored for 40 years prior to purchase and has an abundance of patina as a result. However, inside, Bruce found a heart of English oak and a reliable ride. He’s not planning a restoration. Kurt Ebrect started from Christchurch on the Puch he brought last year. He lost a gear and decided to return home and pick up a dinky split single Puch; a later one exported to the USA, re-branded and sold new in 1968. Beyond Germany the concept never took off, but the split single has an interesting history. And for good looks and charm, give me David and George Tofield’s beautiful Velocettes. Dunvegan is a South Island affair with around half the entrants from points north. A big Christchurch contingent with Colin Grant and Russell Lane pedalling CB400 Honda and Harley Davidson respectively from Blenheim. And for the results! Age/mileage award - Colin Winter 1926 BSA Oldest Bike – Joseph McLintock 1917 Henderson. Hard Luck – Robert Hutton Triumph 3TA Rider’s Choice – Joseph McLintock 1917 Henderson Nut Strangler Award – Graham Brown 1953 Norton Dominator Dunvegan Rock – Phillip Jeeves 1967 BMW Spirit of Dunvegan – Trevor Chalmers 1951 Norton Overall winner – Graham Brown 1953 Norton Dominator. Thanks to Bill Veitch Dave Hastings, Andrew Roxburgh, Brian Walker, Bruce Murray and Kevin Mason for making it happen and keeping us on the straight and narrow. And to Ian Boyd who provided the breakdown service along with Donna and Lyn who made sure we were not short of sustenance on Friday evening and Saturday. Trevor Kempton

Obituary: Ross Matthews – It is with sadness that we advise

of Ross’ recent passing. In looking through some older club records it was noted that Ross had been Motorcycle Rep and very active within the branch in earlier years. His name is also engraved on a few trophies as well. He was a gentleman and always took an interest in what other members were restoring. He and Lorraine continued to join in on the Last Thursday of the month runs until very recently. We extend our deepest sympathy to Lorraine and her family. We have a busy few months ahead. Please make sure you put dates into your diaries so that you do not miss anything. Reminder: Your annual subscriptions are now due. Accounts were either emailed or posted to you in early September. Newsletters from other branches are now posted to the VCC website each month. You will also find their event entry forms there as well. So these are available on the Club Website. https://vcc.org.nz/news-from-our-branches/ Entering a local event - running late with entry forms, - please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. Otago Branch - Name Badges - $10 each – order them from David Ross Tech Talks – Last Friday of the Month Club Nights ––We are always looking for additional interesting speakers. Please get in touch with a committee member if you have any contacts. SPARE PARTS SHED: – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request. Vero Insurance Scheme - Just a reminder, the VCC Vero insurance scheme is set up for those with current VCC membership. If you become unfinancial you will no longer receive discounted insurance premiums The VCCNZ Facebook page at: www.facebook.co/vintagecarclubofnewzealand If you want to add photos and short write-ups for insertion to Facebook please send to: comms@vcc.org.nz AED DEFIBRILATER -There is one on the outside wall of the 4 Square shop on corner of Bayview Road. Please make a point of familiarising yourself of its location – Never know when it might be needed. Library - we are looking for one or two members who might be able to assist with sorting a new data base for the Library. Please contact a committee member.

It would be nice to read other people’s stories.
