Let's talk about this and come up with a plan. 6

Greetings to all as Christmas shows its ugly head again. During the last month we have enjoyed the Taieri Tour which was another great day of motoring around the Taieri with a great meal after. The Veteran and Commercial run was also a great day although the support was not high but the people that entered had a good day finishing at the club for lunch which worked out very well. We need to be thankful to those who organise these runs as not many members are forthcoming when it comes to sorting an event. Coming up is the Moped rally and the Christmas BBQ so it is essential that you put your name on the list if you are coming for catering purposes, thank you. Next year we have the Jackson Run and we need helpers for that; and the National Veteran Run in conjunction with the Brighton Run; which also needs helpers. Following the Veteran rally is the Prince Henry Rally also. Please read the Roadrunner and keep up with what is happening in our area and either help or participate where possible. Your help is always appreciated. Thank to you all and enjoy the holidays. Graeme

National Veteran Rally Decorations for the Edgar Centre The organising committee is looking for help with decorating the foyer outside the Metro Direct Lounge which is where we will be holding the Noggin & Natter and both dinners for the National Veteran Rally & 70th Dunedin – Brighton Veteran Rally. Being on the first floor (access via a lift) we are looking for items which are easy to carry. We would be looking to borrow them from Thursday 25th January 2024 – Sunday 28th January 2024. Please phone Nicola Wilkinson on 021 180 3225 If you have anything that would be of interest. 7

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and Happy New Year. Safe motoring over the festive season and I look forward to catching up with you all in the New Year. Reminder: Your annual subscriptions are now due. Accounts were either emailed or posted to you in early September. Newsletters from other branches are now posted to the VCC website each month. You will also find their event entry forms there as well. So these are available on the Club Website. https://vcc.org.nz/news-from-our-branches/ Entering a local event - running late with entry forms, - please contact the organizer by phone or email to let them know you are coming. They need to know numbers for printing the instructions, and catering purposes for some events. Otago Branch - Name Badges - $10 each – order them from David Ross Tech Talks – Last Friday of the Month Club Nights ––We are always looking for additional interesting speakers. Please get in touch with a committee member if you have any contacts. SPARE PARTS SHED: – Parts shed is usually open every Wednesday morning, and Friday evenings when the clubrooms are open. Reminder – see if you can effectively recycle your parts before scrapping them. NO TYREs by request. VIC Applications / Authenticity Statements Please Make sure of the following: Please write clearly – capitals preferred: ensure that the application forms are completed fully, especially in regards to mileage, engine manufacturer, some history of the vehicle (even if it is only “purchased from Trade Me in April 1999”) Get 3 identical photographs of the vehicle, correct size as indicated on application form Photos of Chassis/frame number and/or engine numbers. PLEASE CHECK THAT ALL PAPERWORK/(PHOTOS - CORRECT SIZE!!!) ARE PRESENT BEFORE FORWARDING TO YOUR BRANCH VEHICLE REGISTRAR – It gets very time consuming when we need to contact you time and again to ensure everything is sorted. THE VIC CARD BELONGS TO THE VCC AND MUST STAY WITH THE CAR! CHANGED VEHICLE OWNERSHIP - SOLD OR SELLING YOUR VIC’D VCC VEHICLE – YOU NEED TO ADVISE NATIONAL OFFICE!!! ENSURE YOU SEND YOUR VIC CARD ALONG WITH CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP DETAILS TO NATIONAL OFFICE – There is a form that needs to be completed for this (available from Branch Secretary or on the VCC website VIC information is the property of the National Club – this is their way of keeping records of Vehicle ownership etc.

For the G.C. Jackson Memorial Trophy

This rally marks the beginning of motoring events in the Branch for the New Year. G.C. (Gerie) Jackson was a long-time member of the branch who lived on the Otago Peninsula and loved its sights, so close to but so different from the city. Not long before his death he raised the idea of this rally and outlined his concept of what it should be to the Branch Committee. When the Committee later decided to take up his idea his family donated the trophy, which bears his name.

The Mary B. Jackson Trophy

For Best Motorcycle at the VCC Otago Jackson Peninsula Rally

Donated by Bill Veitch and Ron Gilbert in memory of Mary Jackson MA (Hons) wife of Gerry Jackson who instigated the Peninsula Rally. Mary was a BSA and Norton rider at a time when few women rode motorcycles. Mary nee Kibblewhite had a distinguished academic career earning University scholarships and prizes. She later taught at Otago Girls High School and St Hilda’s Collegiate School. The trophy is a Norton kick-starter shaft. This year's rally will take place on Sunday 21st January 2024 If possible, the result of the afternoon competition will be announced during afternoon tea, before everyone returns home, failing that the result will be posted in the Clubrooms on the following Friday. The overall winner will be awarded the G.C. Jackson Memorial trophy The event is open to all classes of vehicle accepted by the V.C.C. of N.Z. All entrants must be financial members. Those who wish, are welcome to take part in a modern vehicle, but will not appear in the final results. Enquiries to: Branch Secretary bmmcconachie@xtra.co.nz 0273387008 – text only

Entries Close: Friday 19th January 2024 “Thanks to autocorrect, 2 out of 5 children will be receiving gifts from Satan this year”. John Noble 10

51st TAIERI TOUR REPORT – 4th November After several months of planning and endeavouring to ensure we had helpers for the Tour it all came to fruition on the 4th of November. Bill Veitch arrived at the Wingatui Hall early to find a judo group had already moved in for the weekend. Resourceful Bill was quickly on the phone to someone involved with Wingatui Racecourse – yes! We could use the carpark space for registration and the start of the run. Thank you to all entrants who were very understanding of the situation. While we were unable to offer a hot drink – many used their own with the knowledge that there would be hot water available at the lunch stop - Biscuits were still on offer. During briefing – a single change in direction as they departed the Racecourse was indicated. Both routes were sealed with one sticking to the low-lying area of Mosgiel and the Plains, while the long route took them up Quarry Road to Green Island and then back over Jeffcoates Road to Fairfield, Saddle Hill and back down Quarry Road onto the Plains for a leisurely drive out towards Momona Airport. Entrants crossed each other paths as they followed instructions to reach the North Taieri Church grounds on Tirohanga Road for the lunch stop. Despite threatening heavy dark clouds most enjoyed a picnic lunch on the lawns in front of the hall. It was great to see grand children come along for the ride. They were able to take part in the Field tests which were held inside the hall. 1 – throwing balls into buckets and 2 – looking at items in a box and then being asked what was in the top right hand corner. Notably most women got this correct! A little giggle though when the grandchildren looked at the items and said they had no idea what any of them were! 3 – guess the number of lollies in the jar - at 73 only 2 entrants got this right. Vic Hodge managed to come in 5 seconds short of his time in the time trial. A good effort on his part as he indicated he wasn’t even trying. After lunch entrants were free to make their way home or to their accommodation. Hopefully they all escaped the thunderstorm and hail that arrived later in the afternoon. 42 people attended the delicious and relaxed prizegiving dinner which was held at the clubrooms and catered for by Barbara from the Home of St Barnabas. Thank you to Malcolm McMillan and Boyd Wilkinson for checking the routes. To David Mills Bryan McConachie and grandson Jack (navigator and photographer) as backup crews. To Ray Wilson and Trevor Kempton at the end of the time trial and to Robert French, Ross McTaggart, Bill Veitch and Trevor Kempton for their help as marshalls at the various points. Also to Phil Craigie for allowing us to use the North Taieri Church Hall and grounds for our lunch stop. This is said many times – but without that help these events won’t happen. Marion See page 16 for more photos.

Commercial and Veteran Rally Report Thanks to Bruce Murray and Kevin Mason for organising this event. It seems that these two had offered to help with this – not organise it. Sorry guys! I had heard Kevin wrong! Their names were listed on the entry form as organisers. It is a pity that we did not get very many entries but we had a good day anyway despite the weather. Starting with morning tea at the clubrooms. 6 entries were given instructions along with the need to record our own times at certain points. As the skies opened with drizzle we headed up Sidey Street and onto Stevenson Road to Green Island, where the drizzle cleared. A detour into Abbotsford saw us checking out the residential area of Hislop Lambert and McKinlay streets and then down Martin Road and back out onto the Main Road from Kennedy Road. Back along Main Road past Sunnyvale and through the three roundabouts to take us out to Brighton. It was quite pleasant out there with lots of children clad in wetsuits having just had some education time at the beach and others out enjoying the morning at the café and waving and smiling as we all drove past. A right turn into Bath Street took us along Queen and Trecastell Street. Then it was time to head back into Dunedin via Blackhead Road, and Corstorphine and the clubrooms for BYO lunch. Congratulations to Graeme Duthie on gaining best time in his Veteran 1917 Model T and to Rex and Jenny McDonald for gaining best time in their commercial Model T Roadster. Thank you to Bruce, Kevin and Bill Veitch for arranging this for us. The weather did settle down to be a settled but overcast day. Our Model T was dry when we returned her back to her lodgings. A Veteran Dodge was also supposed to be on the run, but it sounds like it gave up before even leaving Mosgiel. A few of us ventured out after the run to check on its condition – after a quick assessment and chat to the appropriate person the Dodge is now repaired and ready to go for the National Veteran and 70th Dunedin Brighton Run in January next year. Marion

NOW I KNOW WHAT’S IN THE SHED

by Neil Steele

After travelling North on State Highway One, a gaze to the right, just South of Oamaru in a dip, in an 80km area, I saw a building flying motor sport flags, thinking this must have something to do with fast cars. Time passed, and an article in a NZ Classic Car magazine revealed all … they build classic Ferrari race cars. Upon a call to the man himself, Rod Tempero, the time and date was set for a visit. The day arrived, after descending down his long driveway, we were met by the sight of a beautiful Red classic Ferrari, magnificent in the morning sun. Smiles and gasps all round from the 9 car enthusiasts, male and female. Rod Tempero a man of incredible skill and passion for classic race cars answered all our questions explaining the process from a client walking in with a picture in a book, to driving away with a big smile a few years later. In his very cool workshop, we saw a number of the world’s most sought -after race cars, Ferrari, Aston Martin to Alfa Romeo, all in different stages of the build. All of us took away our own special enjoyment from the 90 minutes spent with Rod Tempero. On to the Scott’s Brewery for lunch, we met up with other members of the Dunedin Branch of the VCC, some members from the 1970’s, myself a 6 month member. We enjoy interacting with the other members and marvel at the cars they are passionate about.

PLATYPUS SUBMARINE VIEWING

I have been touching base with Pete for some time now to try and arrange a view of this Submarine over in Middlemarch. He has indicated below what is happening on the 10th of December this is the same date as the branch BBQ. As noted below for a large group of us to arrive there for their formal ribbon cutting might be a challenge for them. So, I have indicated that if it works for him, we could arrange a branch visit for our members on a Saturday or Sunday in February - date to be confirmed - this could replace or incorporate Vintage Post Vintage and Ladies Run. I will keep you posted on this. Marion See below “Sorry for being so tardy in getting back to you with information about your chance to view the Platypus Submarine but the wheels of our committee seem to turn slowly. My suggestion to them was to try and run a display alongside the 'relaunch' ceremony to be held on the 10th of December depending on your availability. However, as we have a very small band of helpers, this idea was vetoed by the committee as they perceive they will be very busy that day. This leaves us with two possible options: A stand alone visit (event) to see the Submarine for which I would make myself available to share what information I have with your group. Because we are up against it timewise before the 'relaunch' this would have to be pushed into the new year. Alternatively, any of your members would be welcome to join our public festivities at 1 pm on the 10th of December at the Middlemarch Museum when there will be several speakers and a formal ribbon cutting ceremony.” Kind Regards, Pete Sparrow

Merry Christmas everyone and best wishes for a safe and enjoyable holiday period. I’m looking forward to lots of fun motoring in 2024, especially the National Veteran Rally in January. Eleanor 17

The charity for 2024 is K9 Medical Detection Centre - the same charity as what we had for the Emma Gilmour night. 18
