Rumour Southland Vintage Car Club CHAIRMAN’S REPORT.

25-29th Jan 2024 2024 National Veteran Rally, 70th Dunedin - Brighton all Veteran Vehicle Rally & Prince Henry Tour 3rd February 2024 Southland Rally 2nd March 2024 Veteran and Vintage Rally - entry form attached

Welcome to the New Year and this January Chairman’s ramblings. It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Neville Hayes. Neville and his father Norman, were long time members and supporters of the club. Over the years Neville generously sponsored and promoted club events. As Managing Director of E Hayes and Sons he carried on the family business. He also expanded the Hayes vehicle collection started by his father, added to his own collection, and put more of both collections on display in the shop. Rest in Peace Neville. I sincerely hope you have had a good break and feel refreshed to tackle 2024 and all the upcoming rallies. Speaking of rallies, The Southland Rally is at the forefront of our activities this month and into February. I am making a plea to all club members not participating in the rally, please, please make yourself, available to help marshalling and, or time keeping and help conducting field tests. Please contact Gerry or Howard

More events and details on page 4

Meeting: Ariki Lodge

The Veteran and Vintage Rally follows a month later, this is to the new format devised by the Club Captains, Gerry and Howard, to try and encourage more entries, they would also appreciate some volunteers for marshals.

Important Notice Have you renewed your membership?

Wednesday Run: 7th Feb

The Darracq is going to the National Veteran Rally in Dunedin. Olly Olsen, David Sycamore, Stevie Randal and Dave Marshall accompanied by Jenny Sycamore and Raewyn Murphy are taking the vehicle. Olly is taking a back up vehicle to carry all the luggage! Ray McCulloch, Tony Warren and Casey Lyons are taking their motorcycles (Tony is taking two) to the Rallies. There are currently 83 veteran vehicles entered, 20 of which are motorcycles, (a record number). Have you renewed your membership - we have a record number of members who have not renewed. You may have not received a renewal notice, please double check and contact the Club Secretary (Carol) if you haven't . The library has a surplus of books, mainly duplicates, which we want to get rid of. The books will be laid out in the library on club nights and can be purchased for a gold coin donation. Finally Congratulations to Lyall Bailey for being awarded the Queens Service Medal for his work on the Southland District Council.

Wednesday Run - 7th Feb The VCC Wednesday Run will be on 7th February, 2024, leaving from the Racecourse at 10.30am. $25pp. Ring David Birss 0274 903370 or 217 5475 before Sunday Evening 4th Feb.

Wednesday Run - 6th Dec The route took us out to the west of Winton, unfortunately this is where things went awry, and instruction that should have said turn right said turn left. As we headed off incorrectly towards Te-Anau, people started questioning the directions. Your scribe had great confidence in the directions until we finished up in Ohai . We then tried to plot the shortest route to Riverton the lunchtime stop. We eventually arrived about 10mins late at the Aparima Tavern. There had been some speculation that we would be offered the Seafood Chowder again, however we were pleasantly surprised to be served an excellent ham, chips and salad. I, and I know others, would like to thank Elaine and Angus for all the effort they put in organising the Wednesday runs this year - thank you very much.

Editorial I was able to attend Neville Hayes’ funeral at the Ascot Park Hotel, the hotel estimated that there were over 650 at the service, with a number of club members in attendance. The eulogies were very entertaining and in one case rather blue!* I always found Neville helpful particularly when I was writing an article about one of the bikes or local personalities. I was once asking about a particular photograph of Burt Munro. He said “hang on a minute”, returning with a cardboard box. It was a priceless collection of Burt Munro photos from over the years. He handed it over saying “just return it when you are done”! It’s good to check; although I thought I knew all the answers to the Christmas quizzes having set them, I decided to double check the answers. One answer threw me when I checked on Google, have a guess at which one I got wrong. (see pages 6 - 9)
