Chairman's Report

A quiet time of the year unless you are working on a project or getting your vehicle maintenance up to date, but it is still cold.

This next bit is not VCC but it is I believe to be relevant. I have been helping a friend, who is a venerable member of our society, that has been scammed. A scammer rang her saying she was ringing from her bank and I am unsure how the scammer managed to convince her to buy approximately $6000 worth of vouchers from 2 business. The Scammer said that someone would be around to collect vouchers. This has made her a bit fearful as she lives on her own. The scammer seems to have rung this woman’s bank and managed to transfer money from her savings account to her eftpos card account, so there would be sufficient funds for her to buy the vouchers. All this involved several phone calls which completely flustered her at which point she tore up the vouchers and threw them in the rubbish fortunately she told my other friend who collected them from wheelie bin.

We took her to the police station who could not help and told us to contact Netsafe who told us it was not able to help, they only deal with internet crimes, so they told us to contact the police? The bank is still looking into how the scammer was able to transfer money from one of her accounts to another account.

We are trying to get the vouchers refunded but they are overseas based. The important thing was that she told someone and did not just hide the loss regardless of her embarrassment. So everyone just be aware these scammers are out there so please take care of each other.

On the last page is a motion to change the Clubs Byelaws on Factory Built & Historic Racing Vehicles and Period Specials. We will vote on the motion at the next meeting.

Next run is Wednesday - 7th August

Start from Racecourse at 10.30am. Ring Angus or Elaine on 03 212 8956 or 0273104239 by Sunday night prior.

The Perils of Buying an Unregistered Vehicle - Be Warned!

When buying a un-registered vehicle, you need to think twice, or more times, until you have it all laid out in your head that you don’t need it, or the costs and frustrations are worth it!

It is a very frustrating and costly process. I purchased a 1983 Honda Accord with a dead Rego. When I was about to purchase it I told the seller I would need all the paper work to show when he had purchased the vehicle and who from, and a receipt showing I had paid him. This was agreed and payment made. Off to VTNZ. This process will cost you $840 – thanks, only to be told that I would need better paperwork, the brakes needed to be fixed and with paperwork for the repairs. I would also need to employ a Repair Certifier because it was a pre-1993 vehicle. Nobody in Invercargill could do this work.

I had to speak to Southern Repair Certification in Hokitika. VTNZ said that the radiator support needed Structural Repair Certification. I was also told that all of these requirements had to be carried out within 21 working days.

When the certifier arrived he was gobsmacked at the minimal rust. He told me to Scotch bright the area, clean and black guard , and then paint the area. $735.00 later, after a second inspection the car was all good to go back for a final inspection.

I also had to obtain a Statutory Declaration from the seller that all the details of his purchase were true and correct, more running around and making appointments. Back to VTNZ. Oops last minute problem, paperwork from Certifier lost somewhere in the system. Car is now in Quarantine until the mail system is sorted. Thank goodness this latest process avoided me having to pay another $830.00 to VTNZ.

Total cost to register the Honda was $2940.00. So if you are contemplating purchasing a deregistered vehicle, don’t pay much for it in the first place. Then you will have your hand in your pocket until it is registered. You will lose many hours of sleep wondering what other costs may be coming. Mine is good to go now. Would I do it again, “NO” a definite no, not even if the car cost nothing. In my case very few repairs were needed. Lucky for me, BUT some aren’t so lucky.

Olly Olsson’s “Scenic Rally” Trip - March 2024

– Part1

The origins of Olly’s Scenic Rally trip goes back to 2023, when some friends of his wanted to go to the “Scenic Rally” that year but in the end couldn’t. Olly said he would go in 2024 and make it into a touring trip around the lower half of the South Island. Word got out about the trip and more people wanted to come along, resulting in 10 vehicles joining the tour. The adventure started from Winton with seven club eligible vehicles (all English) and three modern cars tagging along. The following report is a combination of Marilyn Calvert and Terry William’s accounts of the trip, Terry covered the trip to Darfield where Marilyn caught up with the trip (note from editor: to amalgamate the two reports, and condense it down to a reasonable size, I did quite a bit of editing, so if there any mistakes they are probably mine!).

Wednesday 20th March

David and Marilyn were up with the larks travelling out to Winton, in the Volkswagen, to wave off the people there were going on Olly’s trip. (They joined up with them later at Darfield).

The first part of the trip took us through Hedgehope towards Gore stopping at Waimumu where we had the privilege of viewing the first part of John Tremaine’s car collection, which brought back memories for most. At Gore we caught up with John and Mary Tremaine and viewed the other part of his extensive collection, one car was a Ford XR5 (yes 5), never seen one before.

The overnight destination was Cromwell, so we decided to lunch at the Jimmie’s Pie shop in Roxburgh. On a side street there was a collection of early vehicles, including a 60s model V8 Studebaker, the associated shed contained some unusual exhibits, including a Model T tool for servicing of crankcase bolts. At Cromwell we enjoyed happy hour at the Victoria Arms Hotel!

Thursday 21th March

A 9am start with the lunchtime destination being Barkers at Geraldine. Some of the team also took in the “Route 79 museum”; it had a strong military theme, with a wide selection of other items. Heading to our overnight stop at Methven we were side-tracked to a character who made outdoor sculptures. Several interesting vehicles, one being a Hansa Goliath The livestock was also interesting (very hairy with big horns). Stayed at the Methven Hotel & camping ground, with refreshments at the Blue Pub.

Friday 22nd March

We had two locations to view that had older vehicles; including a Mk1 Jaguar that had an interesting history, plus a number of other vehicles on display, including Renaults, a Bentley and an International truck. Heading to Greymouth through Arthur’s Pass, our lunch destination was the Otira Hotel, At Greymouth we settled into the Seaside Top 10 and met up with the other entrants for the rally.

Saturday 23rd March

The weather was again fine and as we all gathered within the township for the Rally briefing. The rally had an interesting array of vehicles, really good roads, interesting sights and destinations. Refreshments and prize-giving at Hokitika.

Sunday 24 th March

Sunday morning a kind local guided our group to a large collection of Landrovers (in various states of disrepair), enroute we viewed the historic Brunner Mine display. We travelled on towards our destination, Darfield via Moana and Otira. At Moana one English sports car misbehaved, firing flames from the exhaust, which eventually cleared. Stayed at the Darfield Motel with refreshments at the hotel a block away. David and Marilyn finally caught up with the rest of the team at Darfield and enjoyed happy hour in Judith and Stuart’s room before dining at the hotel.

Part 2 in the next edition
