March 2024

Several members have been taking part in Rallies and displays over the last weeks which is good to see we are enjoying the company of like-minded people and their vehicles.

Gore Rally on 26th Feb. 6 vehicles from our Branch – Cooks in a 1964 Riley 4/72, Gaynor Falconer in a 1970 Rover P6B 3500, McCall’s in their 1936 Plymouth Sedan, Milne family in a 1967 Wolseley 6/110, Renton’s with their 1976 Triumph 2500 TC and first time entrant to Gore Rally Gail & Trevor Stoddart in their 1971 Vauxhall Viscount. It was a showery day but the hospitality was excellent and the Rally route was on all sealed roads taking us past the Field Days venue at Waimumu on to Dacre crossing SH 1 to Wyndham for the lunch stop and Field Tests which tested our knowledge of the VCC. The silly old brain does tend to forget facts it should remember on the spot.

Stoddart’s came home with a People’s Choice, McCall’s with Field Test, Gaynor a raffle, Milne’s Time Trial P60 section.

In February Jan and John Cook attended the Southland rally in the Riley 4/72 showery day with good roads and finishing up at Browns domain for lunch And Field tests. A week or so later I attended Toko Rugby clubs

Car show and car run held at club grounds in the Riley picking best British. Gore Rally in the Riley we got P60-Time Trial Runner up and Winner Overall Runner up. Next day I attended Brits ‘Euro day in the Triumph held at Brighton Domain it was well attended and a good variety of cars and utes young and old. Bloody windy and cool though. Thanks for your report John.

Wednesday Run – Neville King organised this outing. 21 people attended in 9 vehicles on a visit to Greg & Debbie Holgate’s in Balclutha to view a collection of vehicles and interesting items that they collect. This was followed by a cuppa at the Heart & Soul Café on Clyde Street.

Heat Pump reminder -Please be aware if using the Clubrooms Heat Pump it needs turning off with the yellow button on the remote before leaving. Hold down for a few seconds and watch the flap close, this will ensure it is not coming on when no one is using the rooms.

Clutha memories by Bill Cross.

Recently Ken asked me did I know the origins of his building on the corner of James and John Streets. I found out that the building was the Foresters Hall. Balclutha in the 1920’s had around five lodges whom looked after the wellbeing of its members. However when social security came along the lodges faded.

The I.O.O.F. Lodge [Independent Order of Oddfellolws] their hall still there now

The Baby Cot and Gift Shop, the Loyal Dalton Lodge was behind the Britannia Theatre now City Impact Church, The Foresters, The Masonic Lodge had two divisions now a Samoan Church. Your readers will recall Donald Reid & Co in the building. On the corner of James and John Street Donald Reid were first on Clyde St. about where the Gate is today. When the first bridge across the Molyneux was opened in 1868 there was a grand parade and the Lodges Free Masons, Loyal Dalton, Foresters paraded in full regalia. Take a walk down John St. left hand side early in the century, on the Clyde St. corner the former Colonial Bank [built 1878] became a doctor’s resident and surgery [doctors Stenhouse, Biggs, Ching Bing, Radcliffe, Dodd’s.] Next the Post Office a wooden gable building, I under stood it was shifted there, replaced in 1912 with new building demolished in 1944 to make way for the present Post Office opened in Nov.1950 [I played in the brass band at the opening] then to McKenzie and Kelly Solicitors to the Foresters Hall. Interesting is it not!
