June 2024

A small group gathering with several apologies for the May meeting on a cool evening.

Alterations to the plans for the Wednesday Run were discussed and the new plan was to visit the Stevenson property at Titri, Waihola to look through their large collection of many and varied collectables.

Member Wayne and Cheryl have been very busy sorting through the Sinclair farm tools and memorabilia, as Wayne says “his family didn’t throw anything away”. A very large Traction Engine sits in pride of place with things such as tools, wooden boxes, bottles, toys, a stationary baler and 1936 Ford Tudor displayed also. A privileged look through their new homestead with spectacular view over the lake and surrounding area was enjoyed. Cheryl’s talent for restoring and repurposing furniture was very evident. Many thanks for allowing us to visit.

The Black Swan in Waihola extended their closing time to allow the group to enjoy a cuppa and chat time for the 28 participants.

Gordon Duthie on the Scooter Safari well wrapped up for the trip from Christchurch to Hokitika.

Bill Cross shares some more memories: While writing for Beaded Wheels I interviewed Joe Ashmore of Owaka And here is some of what he had to say.

In 1910 Joe’s parents like many others were living in a tent at Puketiro In the Catlins clearing bush for the Balclutha to Tahakopa railway line. Joe recalled driving with two friends in a Model T to a sports meeting and on the way home the T broke down with a water impellor problem, but all was not lost for the trio as another T came along and the suggestion of a tow rope was raised. Not having a tow rope a piece of no.8 wire was taken from the farmer’s fence and away we went until the towing T developed diff troubles. So the suggestion was made to take the impellor from the towing T and replace the broken one. A few beers later and the car had cooled down to replace the broken one and a creek was found to fill the water and the beer bottles came in handy and arrived home without any more trouble.
