Chairmans Chatter for Topical Torque

Hello Folks

April has been great weather to get out and about and enjoy your Vehicles,

Philip Macey is the guest speaker for our April Noggin and Nater. Philip will speak on the Straord Motor Park project and will bring us up to date with the latest news and where they are up to with fund raising etc.

Next month is the AGM of our club and I urge you all to think of the future of the club. We need new blood coming through to help run the branch and as you are all aware we have not been able to fill the Club Captain job last year which is an important posion. The Secretary and Treasures posion was filled last year by Rob Thomson who has done an excellent job with combining the two posions. There is a huge amount of work when combining these posions for Rob and it sll makes us one down on commitee.

Our annual Maunga Moana Rally has been held and you will see a report from Rob Thomson Rally organizer elsewhere in this newsleter. Many thanks to all who helped on checks and other dues.

A very warm welcome to new member Lynete Mccomb from Ngaere who has a 1936 Standard Light12 Sedan which is currently registered.

At out last commitee meeng we discussed the past publicaon of a members membership list with a list of vehicles owned. In the past this has been a valuable list for contacng members with same vehicles for advice and communicaons. Other motoring clubs have membership lists for members. The Commitee are aware of the privacy act and laws and are seeking clarificaon from the Naonal office to see if this could be implemented for members who want their name and vehicles published (for members use only) it is well known that if a member did not want their names added to the list then that can be arranged quite easily.

To the Taranaki members who are parcipang in the Highland Fling Rally in Feilding at Anzac weekend at the end of this month. I would think the bag pipes will be blowing and the highland hills will be calling. You'll take the High Road and I’ll take the Low Road. eh Lassie and Laddie.

I wish you all the best for a great drive through back country roads along with all 107 entrants all in pre 1932 vehicles.

Remember to give thought to our AGM and the commitee posions.

Enjoy your oungs in your vehicles ....................... Keep to the le.............. Take Care out on the roads.........................

Cheers, Chairman Colin.

Report from George Kear, President V C C.

Further to the summary of the March Execuve Meeng from the pen of our Naonal President, some points of interest I noted during the meeng in Christchurch.

Constitution [National Body].

The Vintage Car Club of N.Z. must reregister under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022 to retain its incorporated society status, before 31 March 2026. The proposed and/or necessary changes will be put together with the Management Committee reviewing the draft before presentation of the first draft at the Executive Meeting, August 2024.

The proposed change to the management structure of the club generated robust debate, it becoming obvious there was a strong mood for change.

The makeup of the 12-member National Committee, the structure being one of three options seeded at the workshops held during 2023.

The [proposed] National Committee structure;

President: Elected for 3 years – for a maximum of 2 terms.

Hon Secretary/Treasurer: Appointed by Board for 3 years – for a maximum of 2 terms.

Registrar: Appointed by Board for 3-year term – reappointment for further terms by Board.

This is a specialized position hence may be in the VCC’s interests to retain a person in this position for more than 2 terms.

Nth Island Club Captain: Elected by North Island members for 3-year term – maximum 2 terms.

Sth Island Club Captain: Elected by North Island members for 3-year term – maximum 2 terms.

3 Regional Representatives from the North Island: Elected by members in their respective region for a 3-year term – maximum of 2 terms.

3 Regional Representatives from the South Island: Elected by members in their respective region for a 3-year term – maximum of 2 terms.

Beaded Wheels Chairman: Appointed by Board for 3-year term – reappointment for further terms by Board. On the Board but with non-voting rights

This is a specialized position hence may be in the VCC’s interests to retain a person in this position for more than 2 terms.

Speed Steward and Archivist: Appointed by and responsible to the Board, no fixed term. Not a Board Member, position has non-voting rights.

Board Appointee for specialized projects: Fixed term, position has non-voting rights.

V.I.C. applications and renewals: Can take up to three months to process. National Office ask members not to wait to the last minute for renewal.

Branch Manual: As some of the content is now out of date or is not correct, the manual has been withdrawn from the VCC website. The replacement in the format of an enlarged and updated Club Procedure Manual will become available, in digital form only, [no paper copy] end of April. It is anticipated the Procedure Manual will generate more consistency between Branches.

MAUNGA MOANA RALLY 2024

Our annual Maunga Moana Rally for 2024 is now history. On Easter Saturday an entry of 40 vehicles, under Taranaki sunshine, motored a route from the city, up Carrington Road and through Pukei to Saunders Road, then onto the Wirimu to take the motoring convoy onto the roads of rural southwest Taranaki, with the rally, almost 80 miles, finishing in Kaponga for lunch at the Swiss Club Hall. The Kaponga Lions providing a BBQ lunch for those entrants who wished to avail themselves of the opon, and what a lunch it was with the o repeated comment ’way beter than a boxed lunch’. Following lunch, rally parcipants meandered back to New Plymouth by any route they choose.

The Plymouth Hotel hosted our Saturday evening Rally funcon. A social me preceded Diner which was followed by the North Island Club Captain, Glyn Clements, presenng 50-year membership awards to John Hood and Peter Huton, Glyn reading a citaon for each. To make the most of the occasion, 25-year membership badges were also presented by Glyn to Leigh Buchanan and Grant Bishop. Congrats to all four of you for achieving these milestones. The presentaon of Rally Trophies then followed.

In organising this year’s event, the ever changing age of the vehicles seeded a change in thinking. This year the selecon of vehicles ranged from a 1914 Calcot, 1915 Ford T to 1968 Camaro, 1982 Corvete C3, 1985 Mercedes Benz 500SL, plus a number of MGB’s, and in between a ‘Morry’ 8 and a ‘Morry’ 12 (Best of Brish stuff), hence average speed opons needed a litle different thought. Because of the variaon in contour of the roads the rally route was divided into three average speed secons for each vehicle class, that’s nothing new, but now we have to cater for the ‘moderns. Aer discussing my thoughts with Peter Croot, the master of computerized rally results, the addion of a third, faster ming opon to cater for the

MAUNGA MOANA 2024 RALLY RESULTS

Post War, P60, and P80 opons [read driven fast] became a reality. Sorry folk, the opon was sll too slow for some. All in all a successful Maunga Moana 2024.

Thank you to those who assisted in any way. A very special thanks to the Hurleys, they organised the Kaponga Lions to provide a BBQ lunch which drew much favourable comment. Also, thanks to Mike Kruse. He had expressed a wish to be involved in checking the route so he could get a handle on what is involved and this we did do, and then on the day he provided tail end support.

In 2025, the Branch will celebrate 60 years of the event, 21 – 22 March. It’s not too soon to put your hand up if you would like to be involved in organising this event. 60 years of vintage motoring to celebrate, indeed a Taranaki Branch milestone. Rob T.

EDITORS REPORT

A keen group of members gathered at the carpark outside the Ballance Urea manufacturing plant on Thursday and we were joined by some local Lions club members, about thirty all told.

Aer a safety briefing and inducon by Plant Manager, Sean, we were divided into two groups for the tour of the plant. Luckily the weather cooperated, and we were able to complete our walk round just before a shower drove us inside. Thanks to the extensive knowledge of our two tour guides, by the me we got back to the visitor centre we were all well informed about the plant’s operaon and its importance to the farming community and local economy. As a complete surprise, our tour was followed by a generous lunch

in the Company Cafe, which was enjoyed by all. Whilst sing in the cafe, we spoted a fully laden truck/trailer leaving the plant with a load of urea, desnaon – Ashburton!!

It would be great if some of you are able to get to the MotorFest and SwapMeet on at the Straord A & P Showgrounds, on the 20th of this month, details below

An event that might appeal to some is the Show n Shine on the 28th of April at the Rahotu Domain from 10am. A good way to end the school holidays.

Thats all from me for now, keep pedalling, Jim Logan.

LIFES LIKE THAT

As a bagpiper I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper ’s cemetery in the Nova Scoa back country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn’t stop to ask for direcons. I finally arrived an hour late and saw that the funeral guy had gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew le and they were having lunch.

I felt bad and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looking down saw that the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and gathered round. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no friends or family. I played like I had never played before , for this homeless man. As I played “Amazing Grace”, the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I had finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head was hung low, my heart was full. S I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, “I have never seen anything like that before, and I’ve been pung in sepc tanks for twenty years!”

Apparently, I’m sll lost………it’s a man thing.
