Chairmans Chatter for Topical Torque

Hello Folks.

Our next meeting at the Clubroom's will be our AGM. It is hard to believe that another year has passed by and it seems to be speeding up for all of us. It would be great to see a big attendance at this meeting. The Chairman's annual report has been sent to all members along with the financial statements of the club by email. With these reports you will see that the branch has had a very successful year. Whilst membership has remained steady the committee would like to see younger members as well join the mo vement and this is a challenge New Zealand wide.

This next year will see some changes to the National and our branch constitutions to bring us all up to date with the change in the incorporated society act. We received a letter of thanks from the North Island Club Captain for the awesome Maunga Moana Rally that we put on. So good teamwork from Rob Thomson and all who helped make this rally a success. Well Done. We warmly welcome another new member. William (Bill) Mobbs from Hawera. Bill owns a 1939 Ford V8 Coupe and 1947 Ford V8 Coupe. Welcome Bill hope to see you enjoying our club activities.

The very popular "End of Rego Run" is again being held in June and the tradition continues with a run to the Stratford Mountain House in our vehicles for lunch so get your names into John Muter asap as they can only cater for about 50 people. So, looking forward to seeing you all at the Annual Meeting on the 16 th. Bring along any ideas you may have to discuss. Get out and about in your vehicles....... keep to the Left and Stay Safe.......

EDITORS REPORT

Thanks to everyone who took time to send in your reports , photos etc for the Topical Torque this past year, keep them coming.

That’s all for now, Jim Logan.

Cheers, Chairman Colin.

A SPECIAL BIRTHDAY - ALMOST

A couple of weeks Colin rang to see if I could drive my Dodge to a local rest home as they had a resident turning 104, and the family decided that she would like to have a photo taken with a vintage car.

A staff member of the rest home contacted me and was amazed to discover that my Dodge was the same age as the birthday girl and that a newspaper reporter was also attending for some photos.

On the day of the party the weather was a little unpleasant, but I still went along with the open car as I didn’t want to disappoint anyone. Luckily the weather cleared as the morning advanced.

On arriving at the home a few family members and friends were gathered outside where I was greeted by a staff member who informed me that there maybe a slight delay as the birthday girl thought it was still to o early to get up.

Soon after this, New Plymouth Mayor Neil Holdom walked in with a large bouquet of flowers, along with a few more deliveries from local florists.

Inside, there was a banquet waiting with one of the residents hovering over a mountain of sausage rolls and other goodies.

At about this time the newspaper reporter arrived, and the granddaughters went in to get the guest of honour out of bed. A blue Skoda arrived with our local M P, David Macleod aboard and another large bouquet of flowers. This presented me with a good opportunity to query David about the supply of fossil fuel for our old cars over the coming years. I was assured that there would be no problem

By now the sausage rolls had proved irresistible to the elderly resident who promptly filled his plate and retired to a quiet corner .

The granddaughters then returned having been unable to coax their grandmother from her bed so the celebrations would have to go on without her.

Following the party some of the family sat in the Dodge for photos and I suggested taking them for a ride round the block. This was a new experience for them which they thoroughly enjoyed never having ridden in an open car before.

I was disappointed not meeting the birthday girl but maybe next year, when 105 years come around !!
