Chairman’s Report

Eric Foley

Chairman’s Report for June 2024

Let’s start off with some good news.

Since the beginning of this year, our branch has gained seven new members. They are Mason Elliot (Fraser 7), Eion Ritchie, Simon Peterson (MGBGT), Andy Taylor (2 Citroens), Jan Ubels, Dennis Hibbs (Borgward Arabella), and Grant Murray (3 Fords). This brings our membership to a total of 107 members! Welcome to our branch, Lady’s and Gents

I have no doubt that you are all now fully aware that the breakfast venue is Lacus Café at The Landing (650 Lake Terrace). There was a little initial confusion over the venue, but this was quickly sorted, and about 30 of our members turned out for a very pleasant meal served by very helpful staff. It is my understanding that our former venue, The Hub, has had a change of management and a change of direction, which encouraged us to change. The former Hub staff are now at Kefi at Kokomia, a venue that is small and which would provide a potential parking headache. Hence, the shift to Café Lacus.

Club night was a shocker! Seven members, yes SEVEN members, turned up to hear our guest speaker, Stu Cradock of FENZ, talking to us about fire safety in the home. I found it an interesting dissertation as Stu outlined many of the common causes of fire. The other thing I learned from this session was that FENZ will visit your home and offer advice on fire alarms. Terri and I have taken advantage of this and have received a visit. Following some discussion about what we had (and the need to ensure existing alarms were operable) we had a couple of new smoke alarms installed at no expense to us. The turnout on the night was embarrassing. While it was a cold night, there can be little excuse for such a low attendance.

In contrast, the monthly club run was well attended and was good fun. Jill and John Roberts, last year’s winners, with some assistance from Peter Lockie, pro-

duced a Brass Monkey run that was interesting and entertaining. The need to count a number of silent checks along with a range of questions produced winners in Lynette and Graeme Doree. However, I should add that they had assistance from a couple of backseat passengers, Rob and Jane Sacklyn. Maybe the extra pairs of eyes made the difference? We finished up at Jolly Good Fellows on Lake Tce for a very pleasant meal. My thanks to the organisers for their hard work.

The other two issues that are on my desk at present are figuring out appropriate amendments to our constitution to comply with the new law covering Incorporated societies. In this endeavour I have been provided with several examples from other local organisations which will assist. Also, we are about to undertake some advertising to attract a suitable tenant or tenants to supplement our hall usage (and therefore income). With the loss of several regular tenants over the past few years, our income has taken a bit of a hiding. Massey University is gone, Quiltmakers gone, Maori men’s health groups gone, St John in abeyance – all reduce our income. Hopefully, we can improve things.

Safe travels, Eric

PETROLHEADS

The July coffee run will be on Wednesday the 17th July at the L’Arte cafe, 255 Mapara Road, Acacia Bay at 10am. Meet at the VCC club rooms at 9/20 and drive out in convoy. Thanks and Regards, Barry.

The Invention of the Automobile: An Historical Journey - Part 1

The Ford Model T (foreground) and Volkswagen Beetle (background) are among the most mass-produced car models in history.

The journey of the automobile begins with the rudimentary concepts and designs that date back to ancient and medieval times. These early ideas gradually evolved, setting the stage for more sophisticated inventions. In 1649, Hans Hautsch of Nuremberg constructed a clockwork-driven carriage, marking an early attempt at mechanized transportation. By 1672, a small-

scale steam-powered vehicle had been created, though it wasn’t until 1769 that Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot built the first steam-powered automobile capable of human transportation.

Pioneering Innovations in the 19th Century

As the 19th century unfolded, inventors began to explore new possibilities, leading to significant advancements in automotive technology. The de Rivaz engine, one of the first internal combustion engines, emerged during this period, along with an early electric motor. Samuel Brown tested the first industrially applied internal combustion engine in 1826, producing only two units.

Despite setbacks caused by a backlash against large vehicles in the mid-19th century, progress continued. Engineers refined internal combustion engines, developing two- and four-cycle combustion engines and beginning to use gasoline. In 1886, Carl Benz revolutionized the automobile industry by developing a gasoline-powered automobile and producing several identical copies, marking the birth of the modern car.

The Birth of the Automobile Industry

The late 19th and early 20th centuries witnessed rapid advancements and the emergence of key figures in the automobile industry. In 1890, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach formed Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft, which later

merged with Carl Benz’s company to become Daimler-Benz in 1926, known for the iconic MercedesBenz brand.

During this period, numerous inventors and entrepreneurs ventured into the “horseless carriage” business. Ransom E. Olds founded Oldsmobile in 1897 and introduced the Curved Dash Oldsmobile in 1901. Olds pioneered the assembly line using interchangeable parts, producing thousands of Oldsmobiles by 1903. The Ford Motor Company further transformed the industry by developing the affordable Ford Model T in 1908. By 1913, Ford’s advanced moving assembly line reduced the Model T’s price by almost 50%, making it the first mass-affordable automobile.

Early Power Sources: Steam and Electricity

The quest for a reliable power source for automobiles led to the exploration of steam and electric power. Steam-powered vehicles appeared as early as 1672 when Ferdinand Verbiest built a steampowered toy vehicle for the Kangxi Emperor. In 1770, Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot demonstrated his steam-driven artillery tractor, although it proved impractical. Throughout the 19th century, steampowered vehicles were refined, featuring innovations like hand brakes, multispeed transmissions, and improved steering.

Electric automobiles also emerged in the 19th century. Ányos Jedlik, a Hungarian inventor, constructed a tiny model car powered by his early electric motor in 1828. Thomas Davenport, a Vermont blacksmith, built a small electric car in 1834, while Professor Sibrandus Stratingh and Christopher Becker created a similar vehicle in 1835. By the late 19th century, electric cars gained popularity, with inventors like Gustave Trouvé and Thomas Parker contributing to their development.

The Rise of Internal Combustion Engines

The development of internal combustion engines was pivotal in the evolution of automobiles. Early attempts used gas mixtures, as suitable liquid fuels were not yet available. François Isaac de Rivaz built an engine powered by a hydrogen and oxygen mixture in 1806.

Right: 1885-built Benz Patent-Motorwagen, the first modern car—a practical, marketable automobile for everyday use. Below: The second Marcus car of 1888.

Samuel Brown’s hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine propelled a vehicle up Shooter’s Hill in London in 1826. Nicolaus Otto and Eugen Langen built a working engine in 1867, and by 1870, Siegfried Marcus had put a gasoline-fueled engine on a handcart.

Carl Benz’s invention of the Benz Patent Motorcar in 1885 is considered the first modern automobile. Benz was granted a patent for his automobile in 1886, and by 1888, he began mass production. The success of Benz’s vehicle was further proven by his wife, Bertha Benz, who completed the first long-distance trip in an automobile in 1888.

The Automobile Industry Takes Off

As the automobile industry took shape, numerous inventors and entrepreneurs contributed to its growth. Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach designed a vehicle specifically as an automobile in 1889. In the United States, pioneers like John William Lambert and Henry Nadig constructed early gasoline-driven vehicles in the 1890s.

The first four-wheeled gasoline-driven automobile in the United Kingdom was built by Frederick Bremer in 1892. Frederick William Lanchester, who also patented the disc brake, constructed another vehicle in 1895. George Foote Foss built a single-cylinder gasoline car in 1896, driving it for four years despite warnings from city officials.

Conclusion

The invention of the automobile was a gradual and multifaceted process, driven by the ingenuity of numerous inventors and engineers over centuries. From early steam-powered experiments to the development of internal combustion engines and the rise of electric vehicles, each innovation played a crucial role in shaping the modern automobile. The combined efforts of these pioneers paved the way for the automotive industry we know today, revolutionizing transportation and transforming society.
