Printed Mag Available
Printed copies of our monthly magazine, Taupo Torque, are now available from Copy Solutions in Taupo!
We email the magazine to Copy Solutions each month, so if you would like a copy, you can visit Copy Solutions in Taupo and purchase one of the following 3 options:
Printing Tips
Although you can print this magazine to A4 (either actual size or scaled to A4), this magazine has been set up in A5 format. This allows you to print 2 pages up on an A4 or even a booklet if your printer supports it.
If you open the magazine file in Acrobat Reader, and select file>print, under Page Size and Handling (see image below), you can print multiple pages per sheet. Click File>Print>Multiple>Pages per sheet> 2
If your printer supports printing both sides of the paper, you can also print a ‘Booklet’. Which allows you to print, then staple and fold up into an A5 magazine.

Chairman’s Report

Chairman’s Report for October 2024
Breakfast and Coffee Morning are proving to be popular events, attracting a very steady crowd to each event. Thanks must go to Owen and Barry for organising these mornings. They are a great socialising opportunity with very steady numbers at each event. I would like to take this opportunity to remind breakfast attendees again to let Owen know prior to the big day. He needs to let the café management know, and accurate numbers submitted keep managers and organisers happy.
Club night this month was a movie night with the original version of The Italian Job on show. Whilst a little slapstick, it was very entertaining. A good crowd enjoyed the evening and were very amused at halftime when Murray came out of the kitchen with a tray draped around his neck like the ice cream ladies used to use in “the old days .” He had made the tray himself, and it was the source of a good few chuckles. Well done Murray! The next club night (Nov 13th) will be another movie night with version two of The Italian Job. I’m looking forward to it!
The Chairman’s Run was the subject of this month’s club run. A tour by 17 vehicles through rural roads (interrupted by an incorrect instruction) took us to Whakamaru and then on to Atiamuri enabling us to visit “The Bullring” for lunch and liquid refreshments. The meals arrived fairly promptly and were substantial in size. I suspect they are used to feeding truckers and tradies. Once lunch and some
discussion were over, members were free to return home at their leisure. Several were seen clutching doggy bags on departure. Members were positive in their feedback, which is always reassuring, and they seemed to enjoy the outing. I was very pleased with the excellent participation.
Members will be aware that the national body is in the throes of updating the VCC’s constitution. This has created a lot of discussion at Executive meetings and at the recent AGM. I was daft enough to believe that the outcome of the AGM was that all branches were on “the same page”. How wrong was I? The Wellington Branch has made a lot of noise over the proposed changes and seems determined to retain the status quo. No doubt, the next executive meeting will be forced to rehash previous discussions in a vain attempt to move forward. The national body has obtained legal opinions over the need for change in order to comply with the new Incorporated Societies Act, while the Wellington Branch has contrary opinions. We’re going around in circles. Watch this space! In the meantime, our branch will have to update the branch constitution in the near future. I have no doubt there will be a huge turnout of our members when that meeting is called. (Yeah, right.)
Take care out there, folks.
Eric
Movie Night at the Clubrooms
by Maureen
Lights! Camera! Action!
We had a great turnout for the viewing of the 1969 Classic Movie ‘The Italian Job’ starring Michael Caine.
We quickly settled into our seats and enjoyed the comedy/crime, featuring a variety of memorable vehicles, especially the red, white, and blue Mini Coopers. Halftime was marked with Murray Stanley arriving with a nostalgic Usherette Tray, handing out delicious ice cream and chocolate Trumpets.
Thank you, Murray and Barbara, for your efforts in providing us with such a fun evening, I am sure we will all be back again to watch the 2003 remake version on November 13th, as well as the halftime treat.

King Country Scenic Tour 2024
by Tony and Pam Mannington, Graeme and Lynette Doree
Taupo Club members Tony and Pam, Graeme, and Lynette travelled over on Friday, the 11th of October, to take part in the King Country Vintage Car Clubs Rally at Taumarunui on Saturday. Being such a popular rally, we were unable to get accommodation in Taumarunui, so we ended up out at a motel in Manunui. King Country VCC got support from Taupo VCC, Bay of Plenty VCC, Auckland VCC, Wanganui VCC, and Waikato VCC.
A great little motel with no frills, clean and tidy, but we did have carports for our cars. Just the trucks rumbling past in the middle of the night.
Saturday morning dawned very foggy and overcast and a little cool. Having to be at the car park in town by 9.00 am, the Stag decided it wasn’t going anywhere. After a little coaxing from Graeme, she burst into life.
Arriving in town, we were greeted by the Rally Organisers to get our Rally packs and instructions for our Rally route.
The Scenic Tour of the King Country is an informal Rally through the country North and South of Taumarunui, stopping for lunch at Ngakonui Valley School and then heading back through Taumarunui. The route was approximately 180km long. They gave us some questions to answer and, of course, silent checks to look out for along the way. We travelled over a mixture of gravel and tarseal roads, some narrow in places. The Organisers decided that they would let the later model cars off first and then down to the oldest. 3 x 1930 Ford Model A’s basically became tail-end Charlie’s. Great sense, so the quicker cars weren’t held up by the slower cars, and so, of course, the faster cars got to lunch first.
Unfortunately for us, leaving the start and getting to the lunch stop was nearly a 4-hour drive. Luckily, lunch was still available.
It was an enjoyable drive on these country roads. We just sat back and enjoyed the scenery, and we arrived back in Taumarunui in time for a late afternoon tea.
Back to the motel for a scrub-up, and we all piled into the Stag ( Model A resting) and returned to the Taumarunui RSA for drinks, dinner, and prize giving.
Unfortunately, Taupo members didn’t make the grade, so there was no silverware for us this time, except for Lynette getting a spot prize for sitting in a lucky seat.
Thank you, King Country VCC, for organising this event. Tony and Pam Mannington. Graeme and Lynette Doree.

Sulphur City Rally - 31st August
by Graeme & Lynette Doree
A quick trip over in the morning from Taupo in cloudy weather with little fog saw Lynette and I arrive at 7-45 in time for the first cuppa. The 37 entrants started to arrive with a good turnout of P60 (14), which was our class. Tony and Pam Mannington arrived in their 1930 A Tudor to 6 entrants in their class.
Team Taupo was assembled and rearing to go.
Some very beautiful vehicles, with a 1929 Graham Paige Coupe being a stand out for me. It wasn’t concours, but it was very rare. Accompanied by another 1929 sedan version. Entrants from Gisborne, Whakatane, and Hamilton all made up the day. The young couple from Gisborne were in a Model A Sedan and had their two small children safely secured in the car seats mounted high enough for them to see out the windows. They won the long-distance award.
We set off at 1-minute intervals in overcast conditions and a bit of thick fog when we left the Rotorua boundaries. It is a nice run through the Waikete Valley on roads less travelled. Past the monastery, then onto Kinleith and round the back to Tokoroa, then out the back once again to Putaruru, the west again to Waiotu, where the school put on a fantastic hot lunch with soup a main, then sweets to round off. Hot drinks were also available. A couple of bonus questions and some out-of-car challenges added a bit of harmless fun to the stop. The distance travelled was about 130km. After lunch, those who wished could go straight back to Rotorua via Highway 5 or follow the afternoon run sheet. Back to Tirau, then Okoroire, then round, then back to Lake Rotorua to meet the road at the eastern side of Ngongotaha. Round the lake, then back to the clubrooms for a cuppa, then prizegiving. Distance back 113km. A great rally organised by a Rotorua member who had never done one before.
Graeme & Lynette Doree.

Parts Shed Report
To make the Taupo VCC Parts Shed more accessible to our members, I am opening up the Parts Shed on a monthly basis.
Opening the Parts Shed for a couple of hours per month, say from 10.00 am until midday on the last Thursday of each month. There is now a bakery across the road, so head over and get a coffee and sticky bun!
Clean out your shed of unwanted bits and bobs, bring them on down, and take home some other bits and bobs. We have got lots of interesting parts and knick-knacks
We are still looking for a small work bench so we can install a small bench grinder (thanks to George) and a vice.
I have managed to find some shelving tucked away in the garage, so I’ll bring it down to see what I can do with it.
November the 28th is planned for our next “Open for Business” day, 10.00am to midday.
Looking forward to seeing you down at the Parts Shed, Cheers, Tony Mannington. 027-494 2445
