CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Welcome to this edition of the Venture Magazine. As this year’s Editor, Aaron needs feedback and articles, interesting stories on cars you own or owned, cars you would like to own, rally events locally and New Zealand wide. I have included a brief summary of the recent FOMC survey. This makes very surprising reading and gives the VCC and other vehicle based groups extremely strong position when lobbying Government and legislative groups. The total worth of this sector is far bigger than most people ever thought. Please take the time to look at this in detail (located on page 8). Please accept my thanks for the people that filled out the survey; this is a great snap shot of the way we see our vehicles.

On 19 November is our annual Swap Meet. We need volunteers at the gate entrance requesting entry fee and parking exhibitor duties. Jeremy is still looking for names of any folks who can spare a few hours. The early shift starts at 4.45am – 8.00am and the second shift is 8.00am – until finish. If you are able to help please ring Heather 021 684 938. In recent weeks I have nearly joined the ranks of retirement (still doing a bit as required). This has given me a look first hand at the groups of activities that take place on a Thursday morning not to mention the morning teas. The workshop is progressing with their projects. The Parts Department is sorting new additions, grounds and buildings are looking great and the gardens are looking loved. Thank you all for your work in these areas. The silly season is nearly upon us for another year and the elections have been and gone so let’s enjoy what we have to be thankful for.

Thanks also to Lorraine Cossey who ran our Bingo Night recently it was a lot of fun and was intense concentration for a while. See you all at a Club activity soon. Till next time, be safe and keep left. Bozy

Editor’s Snippet The Dame (my 1955 Daimler Conquest) has finally had its electric issues sorted thanks to my friendly local mechanic. It sailed through its WOF and had a new voltage regulator put in—especially after all our fun and games on the last Double 50. It came back with a nice dusty coat so will need a good wash. We have moved to the 20th of the month as a deadline so please keep that content coming in. It is a shame to see some events not as well patronised as they could be. Unfortunately, with my seasonal hours currently at work, my weekend is Monday and Tuesday so I cannot get to as many activities as I want to. I am looking forward to the Awards Dinner though. Keep well. Christmas is fast approaching.

SECRETARY’S REPORT Thank you to our members who came along to our October Club night and listened to Van from the Waikato Cancer Society. Great to have Jillian, Bob and Alan back from holiday safe and sound. Thursdays were quiet without you all. The month has flown by and it seems there isn’t enough time in the day to get things done. I would like to thank our members who will be attending the Awards Dinner on the 28th October. I am writing this on the 14th October with only 2 days to go for confirmation of numbers for dinner. We were hoping more members would be attending to support our long serving members of the Waikato VCC. I understand we all have busy lives and the calendar is always full. Jillian and I have been working in the gardens over the last couple of Thursdays. Men are always there to help when the wheel barrow needs emptying, stumps pulled out, cutting netting to put in the gutters to keep birds out from nesting and general help (see picture at right). Tony is making an awesome job of the painting. Toilets are all complete and now with no orange doors it does make the area a lot bigger. Entrance and Kitchen will be next, Tony wanted to paint the kitchen door and leave it closed to dry, suggested with a smile on his face we ladies climb in and out of the kitchen through the double sliding door on the bench. Yeah right was our answer. Thank you to our members who have paid their membership fees up to the end of September. I will ask National office if Waikato are on top of the list for payments received. Keep you posted on this. Heather

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT As I write this report Marcia and I are having a relaxing week in Taupo. I am also feeling quite happy with the weekends results. Now we have a change of Government, hopefully the country can start moving ahead again and our members will start coming out to club runs and club nights again. Also, this morning we watched the All Blacks narrowly beat the number 1 team in the rugby world, Ireland. Such a close game. A real test match. Getting back to club matters, I was very disappointed with the turnout on 24th September club run, from that run we donated $130 to the Prostate Cancer Appeal. Also, the last club night was another Housie/Bingo night and not many club members came out, if you did not come you missed a really good fun night. In November we have our Veteran and Rear Wheel Brake Rally on. This is being organized by Reece Burnett, so it will be a good day. Entry forms are out so I hope to see you on the day. The club night on the 8th November will be of great interest to all members. Our guest speaker is Gill Gilder, a community banker who is going to discuss Scams and Frauds. Then on the 11th there is a Motorama at Mystery Creek. Some cars are being organized to promote our club. The 19th of November is our Annual Swap Meet. This is our main fund raiser for the year. We need all our members to help on the day, if at all possible, Traffic control, parking and showing sellers to the sites are all jobs to be filled. Please contact Jeremy Brook, (07)8241641 or 0211520922 to offer help for this event. On the 3rd of December, Steve Walter is organizing a Motorcycle Run. Our club night on the 13th December is a picnic at the clubrooms. The BBQ’s will be hot so bring along your meat to cook, nibbles, and drinks. Salads will be provided; this will be a great night to finish the year on. Welcome to all our new members and I hope to see you all at a club event soon. Graham Pate.

A plea from your Secretary Heather: 2023-2024 subscription invoices have been emailed to members from the National NZVCC office. If you have not received an email please check your junk inbox as I have been informed from one member who found their email in the junk email box. If you haven’t received your invoice please let me know and I can follow this up and have it posted to you. Very important why we all must notify our branch Secretary being me Heather of any changes to email addresses etc.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT South Waikato Country Run October 7th Riding old motorcycles in the rain has many risks, wet magnetos, fogged up visors etc. Nevertheless the riders of 22 bikes, including 3 ladies, got off the couch on a cold wet day and had an adventure on a challenging 200km ride. They came from Whangarei, Mangawhai, Auckland, Rotorua and local. A 1993 Yamaha had electronic issues and failed to start, so was parked in the workshop while the rider rode pillion on a sidecar. Intestinal fortitude awards to 87 year old Dave Mayhew, on his very cool Douglas Dragonfly and Terry Kitson who rode his 125cc BSA Bantam the full distance, plus an extra 20km when he missed a sign. One of the hazards is getting lost and alone, as happened when a group missed a turn entering Tokoroa and split up. A minutes silence was held for Ted Billet at the start. A visit was made to Murray’s place where he is repairing a 1950s Jodel aeroplane. He has the fuselage in the top of his shed, and the wing spar below, in a cul-de-sac in Tokoroa. Lunch was enjoyed at the Tokoroa RSA and Dinner was at the Cambridge raceway. Blue Smoke & Pedals is on Sunday 7th January. Our bi-annual long weekend bike tour next February is Friday 9th to Sunday 11th and will be going to the Eastern Bay of Plenty with overnights at Holdens Bay Holiday Camp in Rotorua. Please book your own accommodation direct with the Camp. It would pay to get accommodation booked early by making up suitable groups to get the best value. Their website is www.holdensbay.co.nz and phone 07-345-9925. Tell them when booking you are part of the Waikato Vintage Car Club group for Friday and Saturday night. There will be a limit of 25 bikes for this event due to organisational limitations. Entry form available by email early November. A place of interest is needed for our Christmas ride on December 3rd if anyone has any ideas please let me know. Steve Walter 0274920095

CANCER SOCIETY DONATION At the October club night we presented the Cancer Society with our donation of $4,436 to their Events Manager Van who was able to tell us all about how our donation benefits the Cancer Society. The main focus of the Society is the Lions Lodge (ex Braemar Hospital) in Tainui Street in Hamilton. This amazing facility has 50 rooms available in a mix of configurations suitable for singles, couples and families. There are areas for arts and crafts, puzzles and reading. It is available free of charge to the guests who can come from all over the region to have cancer treatment at the Waikato Hospital, they can stay for up to 8 weeks at a time whilst going through their treatment. As well as somewhere to stay – they are provided with all their meals and transport to and from the hospital as required. An on-site masseuse and spa baths are also provided to aid in their recovery. Every evening the guests can get together to share their stories and offer strength to each other. Last year 1900 people stayed at the Lodge, which amounted to 12,000 sleeps. Van was able to share just how much their guests appreciate being able to concentrate on their recovery by having all the worries of finding accommodation and transportation, meals etc. taken away from them. The Society also has 17 fleet vehicles which travel 85,000 kms per year providing support via their 3 nurses to those afflicted with cancer in the region, via support groups and home visits. 80,000 frozen meals are delivered around the region along with over 100 weekly support meetings available to patients and caregivers to attend. All this great work would not happen without the assistance of over 2,000 volunteers and the generous contribution from the public. A big thank you to all our members for your support on our Daffodil Day – it really makes a difference to so many people.

WORKSHOP REPORT Well here we are again, another month has passed, so quickly I find, retirement is not supposed to go this fast although I was warned that I would be busier than I was when working 10 - 12 hr days. The workshop last month has been a little quieter than usual as far as use of the hoist is concerned so a bit of outside maintenance has been seen to on the clubrooms and grounds, ie bird proofing and spreading some donated topsoil thanks to son Tony (TCL Earthworks). Daffodil Day saw plenty of interest in what the workshop has to offer with both new and existing members seemingly very impressed.

I believe one of our members Mr Graham McKenzie was seen on the Bill Hohepa TV programme - 'Bills Old Cars'. Unfortunately we were away and missed the programme and I wasn't even able to record the event as we had our sky card along with us in our motorhome at the time. Isn't YouTube fantastic as I can now review the programme? Bill's weekly show is at 7.30pm on a Tuesday night on Sky Face Channel 83. Some very interesting cars, vehicles, even a look at C&R Developments Museum out at Hautapu was featured recently. Don't forget any workshop memorabilia, Flags (I would like to see others, rather than FORD) etc that you don't have a home for we could display these items in the workshop.

Thursday opening hours are from 9.30am to at least 2pm - 2.30pm or weekends by arrangement. To book the hoist contact either: Graham Holmes (07) 827 7341 Andy Hammond (07) 823 5712 or 022 0415 356 Cossey Below: A pic from the Commercial Rally at Wanganui this Labour weekend.

Despite all of our team being away quite a lot in the recent period for one reason or another, we seem to have managed to make quite good and significant progress. Having found that the advance/retard actuator on the new magneto was not suitably positioned to work with the linkage control mechanism and could not be changed, we were fortunate to notice that the one on the rough ‘spare’ Dixie mag. obtained at Canterbury Swapmeet last year was what was needed. Some clever work by Alan arranging a changeover had us back in business. This enabled the motor to be run up again and correctly timed. Once the residual smoke from excess fuel cleared, the engine sounded quite alright, with no rattles or other obvious concerns. The engine lubrication is of the dipper type and priming of the oil transmitter has given indication of good oil pressure. Peter and Reece have completed and installed the new front skirt for a trial fit and it looks the real deal. Also in the panel beating department, both front mudguards are now ready to go back on for their trial fitting, after some significant realignment work. Lots of interesting jobs remain, so if you are keen to join in with this club project in any capacity, get in contact with Alan Sharp or Bob Hayton at either: alannzdodge@gmail.com or hayton.rj@gmail.com respectively (alternatively, by phone at 02102553853 or 0274230610) to have your name added to the contact list, together with any special skills you may be able to contribute. Work sessions are currently on the workshop open days on Thursday mornings, from 9.30am onward and morning tea is always put on, so no excuse really for not becoming involved to help, learn or socialise.

A BIG WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS

We hope that you will enjoy the club and it’s many activities If you have any queries either big or small please do not hesitate to contact any member of the committee and they will be more than willing to assist you in any way possible. Dennis Whitbread-Edwards: 1962 CZ 502 Supreme Motorcycle Selwyn Martin: 1973 Chrysler Limo Sedan, 1954 VW micro-bus Gaye Gouk (Neville Gouk) Once again, welcome to the club. We hope to see you at the club night on the second Wednesday of each month.

65th ANNIVERSARY RUN Sunday 24th September Once the decision had been made to attend this run, the first thing to remember was that daylight saving kicked in overnight. Consequently, the morning was a little darker, and we were a bit more bleary eyed. It was a day for the Mustang, so we left home about 8:45 to arrive at the clubrooms by 9:30 for morning tea. Heather had been busy making pikelets in the kitchen, these were jammed and creamed and morning tea was served. Cars began to arrive slowly, and by 10:00am there were only seven vehicles ready to start. Instructions were given out, explaining that all roads existed and there were no silent checks. As an alternative, we had to look for and count the STOP signs and GIVE WAY signs we saw, and how many railways and one lane bridges we crossed. The route took us over French Pass, and down into Buckland Rd where we passed Hobbiton, and eventually out onto the Tauranga-Hamilton Highway. We saw the Okoroire Hotel, and finally onto SH 1 at Putaruru where we turned into the Timber Museum for lunch. The museum allowed us to use their modern function room for lunch and we had discounted entry to the museum. Most had a wander through and were impressed by the displays and the size of the timber industry in this area. Another interesting aspect was the model train layout which originally came from Hawkes Bay. After lunch we turned right off SH 1 and drove down the left side of the lake to eventually cross the Arapuni Dam, and wind our way back to clubrooms via Leamington.

14

Again, Heather and team had prepared a delicious afternoon tea. Lorraine and Bryan Cossey were also there and a number of prizes were set out. Some discussion ensued about STOP and GIVE WAY signs, did we count only those we saw on our side on the road, or all that we could see? Was the dam a oneway bridge? However, no winners were declared and

everyone got a prize.

This event was advertised as the 65th Anniversary Run to commemorate 65 years of the Waikato Branch of the VCC. It was disappointing to note that only seven vehicles were in attendance, Bryan Cossey and Dave Nordell had put a great deal of effort in to organising this for members. Those that did come really enjoyed their day of fantastic motoring on excellent roads, the plotters even found roads that we cannot recall being over in 36 years of motoring in the branch. Grateful thanks to both Bryan and Dave and the kitchen team. The run was also raising funds for Blue September -the Prostate Cancer Charity. We all wore blue ribbons, courtesy of Marcia and contributed $130 to the fund. Those attending were Roy and Sue Rowe, Graham and Marcia Pate, Glyn and Robyn Doughty, David Barnes, Dave Nordell and Helen, Arte and Jan Gage-Brown in their 1928 Straight 8 Hupmobile and the Terrill’s snr. Veteran Rally Saturday 04 November Calling all owners of Veteran and ‘Rear Wheel braked Vintage’ vehicles, it is time to get them polished up and ready to go!!

A recent donation to the Branch Library consists of two sets of ‘How to Maintain or LIBRARY NEWS Fix Your Car’ type periodicals. These ringbound sets are full of helpful hints and tips to assist you in the garage or on the road. They are located in the ‘Magazines’ section on our shelving and for reference only. Why not check them out – you can copy off on the photocopier any items which might draw your interest. Much of the shelf identification has now been completed in clearer to read ‘black on white’ magnetic labelling, so should make it easier for you to find that elusive book on a topic that interests you. There is so much to select from, you are almost spoiled for choice. When handling the items, please be careful to avoid damaging them, especially the spines as they are withdrawn from the shelf for examination. 17
