Chairman’s Report:
I have been doing some reading and thinking this month and I have a few thoughts to share. Some of this may even be worthy for discussion at future club meetings.
With the changes to the Incorporated Societies Act on my mind I had a read of our club constitution as some amendment may be required to comply with the new act. While reading I found that our club has several documented objectives. Without listing all 7 of our clubs’ objectives I would like to focus on just a couple of them in my report this month.
The first is to foster an interest in, and engage in the preservation, restoration, maintenance and use of motor vehicles in such categories as are catered for by the club. It is certainly apparent that our active membership has a strong shared interest in a wide range of vehicles eligible under the various VCC categories and our participation in the club reflects this. However, to ensure that this shared interest is maintained over the longer term I believe that it is necessary to promote our interest in historic motoring beyond our own club membership.
The best means we have for doing this is by fulfilling one of our other club objectives. To promote rallies, touring expeditions’, competitions, trials and other such events that may be suitable for club eligible vehicles. Of course, our club is very active, normally having a couple of planned runs each month for our branch members that are often in the form of touring expeditions. Beyond this it is also important to ensure we have a few events on our annual calendar that promote our interest, and our club, to the wider community. A good example of this is our annual Daffodil Rally that attracts strong interest from all over the Eastern Bay of Plenty. This event creates an opportunity for us to promote our club through local media and other forms of advertising, increasing the club’s profile and creating awareness of our vehicles and activities. Our upcoming 50th anniversary is another great opportunity for us to put our club on show and I hope we can take advantage of this occasion to engage with our local community.
To ensure that a strong interest in historic vehicles is maintained we must ensure that we do not operate in isolation. We must share our interest in historic motoring not only within our club but also with the wider community. By doing this we may encourage owners of classic or vintage vehicles to get involved with our club and build on our membership. We may also engage with people who have an interest in historic vehicles but maybe don’t own one themselves. In this case we can raise awareness of the importance of these vehicles in New Zealand history and build community support for our hobby. This community support may become very important in the future as opposition to our activities becomes increasingly real due to concerns around the environmental impact of traditional petrol-powered transportation.
I hope to see a strong turn out from our club members and I also hope we can attract good intertest from non-club members at our Daffodil Rally on the 25th of August. If the winter weather is kind to us this year, I am sure we will have a great event.

Club Captain Les - Reports and Events: What we have done in July:
A couple of cars: Costar’s along with John & Magz travelled to Wellsford to compete in the “Winter Woolies Rally”
Quite a few Members attended the Rotorua Swap Meet on Sunday the 14th
Wednesday 17th - Mid-week Run to Opotiki, 12 cars left Bunnings car park for a run to Opotiki for lunch at the Kapai Kai Cafe, then some went to visit Mark in Thornton Park Home.
Sunday 28th - 14 cars left the shingle pit, headed to Rotorua to join with Bay of Plenty, South Waikato and Rotorua Branches at the Settlers and Steam Museum for a social get together.
It was great to catch up with Members of the other Branches and what they have been up to since we saw them last. Also good to talk to the Chairman and Club Captain’s of the other Branches about more inter-club runs in the future.
Of course the Museum is a great place to visit and next time we should make sure it is a “Live Steam Day”

November Inter-Branch Visit:
What Gisborne are proposing for our inter-branch visit with them this November. They are proposing a Campout at the Mahia Campground on the Weekend 22nd – 24th November, there appears to be a lot of accommodation available
They are intending to leave Gisborne Mid-morning on Friday 22nd travelling to Mahia via Tiniroto, Frasertown and Wairoa
Saturday 23rd optional activity and a Gymkhana Probably dinner at the local Pub
Sunday 24th a short Run to Tahaenui Fete which is a short distance south of Nuhaka .4.
Options for us:
1. Go to Gisborne on Thursday and stay the night
2. Leave early Friday morning to be in Gisborne Mid-morning. Then the return trip:
1. Leave Nuhaka Sunday 24th travel to Gisborne and stay the night.
2. Leave Nuhaka and travel home.
3. Or we could travel on to Napier, stay the night and travel home Monday.
4. Or travel on through “Gentle Annie” to stay at Taihape, then home.
Comments and suggestions welcome.
Wellsford/Warkworth Winter Woolies Rally
Saturday Saturday 6th July
On Friday 5th July Gail and I in the Capri headed to Warkworth, to a dog friendly motel (we had Henry with us) to attend the Winter Woolies Rally in Wellsford. John and Magz were sometime behind us and stayed at Wellsford.
The Rally HQ was the Wellsford RSA and on Saturday morning after a cup of tea we were away at one minute intervals.
At the briefing they told us not to follow the car in front, we soon found out why, there were two sets of instructions, very clever.
After leaving the RSA we travelled around Wellsford then out into the countryside on plenty of metal roads (Shane Jones needs to spend some money up there and mend the pot-holes).
After cruising along on the eastern area, we headed inland, but got a little lost trying to find a “tractor driving skeleton, wearing sunglasses”.
Then on our way to Paparoa then Matakohe School for lunch, a very substantial lunch was provided by the school.
After lunch we were away again passing through Paparoa and Maungatoroto then on to Kaiwaka, then to Wellsford RSA for a cuppa.
Back to the RSA at 6pm for entertainment and the Prize-giving Dinner.
A well organised Rally and enjoyable drive, except for one or two potholes. .5.
