Thecommitteemeetingwentwell,themonthlyclubnightjustworkeda treat,andthenthetalkfromTimCostleyonthecompletionofthemeeting justmadeitsogreat.Whenyougettheopportunitytolistentosomeone whohashadsuchaninterestingcareer,itmakesyourealisethatthereisso muchouttherethatyoucannotgetyouheadarounditall.Whenyouput togetherallthethingsthathehadbeeninvolvedwithasapilotofa helicopter,andheadmittedthathewasonlytouchingthesurfaceofwhat hehashadtodo,youcanonlyimaginewhatthereisouttherethatwe, meremortals,havenoideaeventakesplace.AfterlisteningtoTim,and consideringallthatIhavehadthepleasureofbeinginvolvedwith, experienced,andgonethrough,Irealisethatstillleavesalottobedone. Whatabrilliantclubnightwehadrecently.Thespeaker,TimCostley, gaveusapottedhistoryofhisAirForcecareer,startingwithhisinitial applicationrejectionwhenleavingschool,tohiscurrentpositionofWing Commander,OfficerCommandingFlightTrainingoperationsatOhakea AirBase.
Timhadseveraltoursofdutyoverseas:Afghanistan,PNG,Solomons andEastTimor,andlatterlyassistingNewZealand’sresponsetothewar inUkraine.Whenhefinishedtheroomwassilentforafewsecondswhile everyonedigestedwhattheyhadjustheardandseen.
Thiswasagreatlead-uptotheplannedvisittoOhakealaterinthe monthwhichhasbeenorganisedbyJohnWhite.
Asreportedattheclubnight,theNightOwlrunwas,Ibelieve,well supportedandfun.Thewinnerwasdrawnfromahatastherewereseveral vehiclesthathadscoredthesamenumberofwinningpoints.
Alsothankyoutothosememberswhohaveorganisedandparticipated inthemidweekshedraids.Ithasbeenreportedthattheyhavebeena roaringsuccess.

TheoneshownherewastheModel75of1918,whichwhilemaybealittle slowhadaquiteagoodrangefor105yearsago.
Interestingtonotethatin1900,electriccarsheld38%ofthemarketsales, butby1905thisnumberhaddroppedtolessthan10%.Electriccarswere significantlymoreexpensivethanpetrolpoweredcarsandwereregarded asinconvenienttouseduetochargingrequirementsandbatteryreliability.

The“NightOwl” Rallywaswellsupported, butduetotheinclement weathermosttheoldcars withvacuumwipers,no heaters(orevenside windows)wereleftat homeandafinearrayof Toyotas,KiasandNissans tookflight.Despitethe name,thiseventtakesplaceinthedaytimethesedays,andwe hadareasonablystraightforwardcourseforagooddayout.
Finishingattheclubrooms,weallenjoyedreflectingonthe day’sfunandhoedintoapileofpizzasdeliveredfromPizza HutandDomino’s.
Itseemsthatresultswereabithardtoevaluate,soalastminuteluckydipwasarranged.TheluckywinnerswereDes andPaulineStClare,withBruceJamieson,whousually navigatestheteamintolastplace.
Withjustalittleeffortyoucanturnthisintothat.

Let'sassumeyouhavedrainedyourengine'scoolingsystemforsomereason. Nowyouhavefilledtheradiatoranddecidedtotakeadrive. Shortlyafterwards,steamisnoticedcomingoutfromaroundthebonnet. Liftingthebonnet,youcanhearasizzlingandbubblingsound.It'sthenyounoticea crackhasappearedalongtheengine'swaterjacketorcylinderhead,withsteamandhot waterbubblingout.Youremovetheradiatorcaptorevealnowaterinsight.What happened?
Someenginethermostatssealsowellwhenclosed,astobeairtight.
Fillingtheradiatorhasdoneonlythat,withnowater,orverylittle,enteringtheengine blockBydrivingoff,theenginewithverylittlecoolingstartstooverheatandeventually thethermostatopens,allowingairtoescape.
Inturn,thisallowscoldwaterfromtheradiatortosuddenlyentertheengine'swater jacket.Thethermalshockoftheoverheatedengineblockinteractingwiththeadmission ofcoldwatercrackstheengineblockorcylinderhead.
Thisproblemusuallyoccurswithenginethermostatsthathavenoairbleedholeora blockedbleedhole.Somethermostatsdohaveableedholecompletewithajiggler insertedintothebleedholetorattleaboutandcleartheholeofpossiblesludge blockagecirculatingaroundthecoolingsystem.

Thesolutiontoavoidthisproblem,isto loosenoffthetemperaturesenderunitwhen fillingthesystemtoallowairtoescapeand watertoleakout,indicatingtheenginehas coolant.Orloosenoffsomeotherfitting lowerthanthethermostatposition,suchasa heaterhose,forthesameindication.Thecar heaterwatersupplyshouldalsobeturnedon topurgetheheaterofanytrappedairinside.
Runningtheenginewiththepressurecap removedandrevvingthemotoroccasionallytoprovideasurgeofwaterthroughthe coolingsystemalsohelpstopurgeoutanyremainingairtrappedinside,indicatedby bubblesappearingintheradiator.
Youshouldnotdrivethecaruntilyouaresurethattheenginecoolingsystemis operatingsatisfactorilyafteryouhaverefilledtheradiatorandthatnotrappedair remains.

Wemanagedtopickthecoldestandwettestdayformonths,butluckilyall oftheirdisplaysareinthreelarge,drybuildingswhichwerebuiltasadairy andcheese-makingfactory.Betterstill,theyhaveawarmandcomfortable lunchroom,andwewerewelcomedwithhome-madesconesandplentyof teaandcoffee.Around40membersbravedtheelements,anditwasn't hardtofindplentytointerestalltastes.
Thefavouritesseemedtobeatrioofbigdieselgeneratorsets,oneof whichpoweredagunbattery inWellingtonduringWW2. Anotherhadbeenthe standbyelectricitysupplyfor manyyearsatTrentham Racecourse,andthisonewas startedupforustoseeand hearrunning.
AgreatdealofWellington's industrialheritageison displayhere,muchofitin workingorder,from enterpriseswhichmanyclub memberscouldremember suchasOdlinsTimber, Mayer&Toye,Twigg&Co., Dunlop,andthePetone Slipway.

OurfirstMid-WeekGarageRaidwasverysuccessful,withmorethan thirtypeopleattending.Wevisited(“raided”)GraemeandLeslieSmythin Ohau.TheyhaveafinecollectionofMorriscars,andaRoverP6.Nearly complete,aftereightyearsonandoffwork,isa1929MorrisIsis.Oneof onlytwoorthreeinNewZealand,thiswasthetopofthelineMorris,with averyAmericanappearance.ThisisbecausetheywerebuiltusingDodge VictorySixbodydiesbroughtoverfromtheUSA,butthesewere repeatedlysmashedbecausetheBritishsteelusedforthebodieswasmuch harderandthereforemoredifficultto“draw”orformthanthesoftermore ductilesteelusedinAmerica.Theywereonlybuiltthiswayforoneyear beforerevertingtomoretraditionalBritishcoach-buildingconstruction, thatiswithlotsofwoodintheframe.Theenginehassixcylindersof2500 ccandoverheadvalves,thetransmissionis3-speedandthecarhas hydraulicbrakes(sameason1927Dodge).
