Hi to all members
CHAIRMANS REPORT
Had a busy labour weekend. I attended a Vauxhall national rally held in Gore. Arrived Friday. Saturday a bus trip to the Kingston flyer in Kingston.. A great trip. Sunday cars were on display it Mandeville. Goa vintage car club catered for us on Saturday night at the club rooms., a barbecue was had by all at the gore club rooms who did well catering for 52 of us. Monday we visited the Richardson's museum at Invercargill that was mind-blowing. Especially the motorbike section. Tuesday it was Homeward Bound my Vauxhall Victor 3.3 went well. Thanks giving service to Robert for bringing an interesting film on Henry Ford and his V8 engines. The new trophy was presented to Steve for his work and organizing The Vintage Car Club daffodil days thanks Steve may it continue. Reminder to members the teapot rally is on on the 12th of November. Meeting between the bridges for a picnic lunch at 11:30 at Kurow. Followed by a car run and then to onto the Oamaru club rooms. Next meeting thanks to John Dawson we will be meeting at Nigel Newberries place at 7:30 p.m.. Refer to John's report for more details thanks John. It is great to see members are coming up with different ideas that we can keep our meetings more interesting. The waimate Christmas parade is on on the second of December we need to support the parade with a display of our cars. It has come to my notice that the cars will be the first away on the parade that will save riding their clutches. John also will be expanding on this. That's all from me see you at the next meeting on the 16th of November 7:30.
Seconded John Carried Cheers Owen
A Word from John Dawson We are just about at the last meeting of the year. I have organized a garage raid , that you definitely don’t want to miss. A unique opportunity to view a hot rod, built here in Waimate. The first that I have seen in my 50 odd years living here. Make sure that you arrive before 7.30 as kick off will be on the dot. The address is the corner of Maude and Herbert St. You might know of someone that would also be interested. Don’t hesitate in bringing them along. Any queries ph. me : John Dawson: 0272466037. Positive Waimate Christmas Parade. USE IT OR LOOSE IT. This is something that we as a club and community member, need to support. We as the Waimate VCC, can use this opportunity to showcase our cars and share the joy of Christmas. Bringing a memory and smile to many faces. We will start the parade, before the pipe band , hence no riding the clutch or braking frequently. Can you let me know if you are participating, then I can enter our Car Club.

British Car Museum. The all British Car Museum which was situated at Te Awanga, Hawkes Bay ceased operation a few years ago after the death of it’s founder Ian Hope. Ian started collecting Morris Minors in C1970s/80s for family members. When he ran out of family members to buy for he continued to buy the little cars as they were too good to be just left there. Most of these cars were reasonably priced at the time and there were lots of them around which prompted Ian to set up the Morris Minor Museum on the site which later became the British Car Museum. At it’s height the museum housed over 450 cars and was world renowned. At that time it is thought to have been the largest collection of British cars in the world. Over a long period Ian collected a large number of British cars of all makes and ages. They included small veteran Austins to large late model Rolls Royce’s and everything in between. Some are in very rough condition while others are in very nice condition.
After Ian’s death the family began selling the cars and recently sold the entire property with over a hundred cars still in the sheds. The new owner wishes to sell the remaining cars and invites anyone who is interested in purchasing any of these cars to contact him before the end of November to view the cars and “do a deal”. All the cars will need attention to some degree. Any cars still at the venue after November will be sold by Turners Car Auctions. All the cars were stored on axle stands and these are also for sale at $30.00 a pair. The current owners contact details are: Dave 027 437 6073
The Joys of Owning a Desoto Roadster Many years ago in a town far far away (chch) . As the proud owner of amongst other cars and motorbikes , a 1938 m8 4 seater tourer and a 1929 Desoto sedan in original order with 117,000 miles on the clock.
Teapot Rally 12th November Meet North Otago Kurow Bridges 11.30
I knew of a 29 Desoto roadster in the shed of a friend , I tried to buy it , as did many others, no luck. Then one day out of the blue the owner said its for sale , so had to sell my 1918 490 Chev to come up with the necessary funds. After careful recommissioning we started to rally it and for the next 3 -4 years took it to Nelson for our annual holidays , always with the roof down, except coming home once in extreme weather we had the roof up and strapped down with tie downs to keep it on. Christchurch to Nelson is in top gear same on the way back , I even passed a truck up the Lewis on one trip. With all these trips never missed a beat until day on the way to Timaru National Veterans Rally (the Brush was entered but in Nelson cracked a block) it developed a knock while pushing fast (65mph+) in the wet with roof down still , trying to keep the rain going over the top. Turned out to be a cracked piston.
10th December is the date for our Xmas Run and lunch at the Riverstone Kitchen Numbers needed please advise Owen
So a call to dad to bring down my daughters race car trailer and with a new set of pistons solved the problem. The Desoto is a good example of a true vintage car, it will pull from 10mph to 75mph in top gear, no stress. Cruising speed is 50mph , I do not push it hard as much now. Cont Next page
Joys of a Desoto Roadster contd It was restored in the late 1960,s and was entered and did about 1/2 of the 72 Nelson International Rally. It is NZ new in November of 1929 so it is the 3rd batch that came to NZ ( my coupe is 1st batch March 29 i.e. 28 car in USA) The pale yellow color is close to factory and still look good after all these years, it certainly draws a crowd when in town ( not as much as the Brush) . I use it as a car and do not use my Holden Calais , much too modern. It is very easy car to drive until you need to back into a park, then the arm strong power steer is a bit weak. There were only 4 Desoto Roadster in NZ but imports have increased to around 8, some are LHD. I recently converted to 12v so now starts on a cold morning and I can use it at night to cruise main street and pull the birds. •
