When you arrive safely at the rally, motorcycle is parked up, you relax, share stories, have a meal (usually at the rally site) eat, drink and be merry join in the AGM pay your subs/fee then ride home on the Sunday. Accommodation at the Riverside Camp Ground, is cabin/c’van or tent, there is other accommodation in Murchison.

REPORTS Mystery run 22 October 2023 - report and pictures – Bruce Heyward club

captain A mystery run was organised to replace the planned lunch run to Bealey Hotel which was shaping up as a non event. When I say “organised” really that had little to do with the CC as it was as big a mystery to me as to anyone! However at 10.30am on Sunday morning a gathering occurred at Anzac Park. Tom and Daphne first to arrive, followed in quick succession by Pauline with her neat Morris 1000, Fred and Adrienne 1939 Chev sedan, Pat and Elaine giving the lovely Chrysler rag top coupe an airing and of course no gathering of the clans is complete without the Campbells ie Dave and June in the series E, then yours truly in the 1963 Vanguard 6. Nelson Creek Domain for a picnic was suggested in the group discussion, those that had not brought a picnic shot off to find food (Do Duck was open!) .So Nelson Creek Domain is where we ended up. Beautiful warm day, first time for me and I am sure many others too, to experience a touch of sunburn at Labour weekend. Lunches consumed and a pleasant natter and we dispersed homeward at around 2pm. Numbers were never going to be large, being Labour weekend but I think those who attended enjoyed their day. I know I did.

Oh dear can June find the “butties”?

Kick start run 5 Nov 23 to EMPIRE HOTEL, ROSS The weather forecast was rubbish for the coastal region and already drizzling when we left Reefton with the Matchless safely tied down on the trailer as far as Anzac Park. With the Matchy unloaded and engine warming up Colin arrived on the trusty Bullet and we rode off to Hokitika in cloudy but dry weather to find Holden Monaro owner Bruce Wright waiting for us at BP with his 1972 Triumph Bonnie, joined shortly after by Warren Parker on his BSA 500. Meantime Zoe had detoured slightly to pick up Marianna and Gilly had returned home to replace the leaking carburettor float on his immaculate Model 7 Norton Dominator before joining us at the Empire Hotel in Ross. Interesting to note that with the Norton now in the lineup the 5 major British brands from the 1950s were all represented. New member Stephen Hardy is currently restoring a 1950 Matchless G3L, so that should be a future kickstarter!! Bruce with his Matchless joined by Colin and his REnfield Bullet at Anzac Park

Joined by Warren and his BSA at BP Hokitika

By now I had picked up Marianna who joined me as back up and reporter on the day...go for it Marianna............

We were graced with 5 kick start motorcycles on our 2nd Kick start run Cruising from as far afield as Reefton and as close as just down the road from the lunch venue to Ross, it was a very casual pleasant no-stress ride. Traffic was light, rain was light and the conversation on the interesting side with motorcycle trivia coming to light.

From the left we have a ... 1951 Norton Dominator, 1952 B33A BSA, 1972 Triumph Bonneville, 19..shhh Royal Enfield Bullet, 1954 Matchless G80 and in the background beyond the veranda post, the top pick for an appealing ride for two, a 1927 Harley Davidson with side car. Tourists frequenting the Historic Ross Empire Hotel could not resist taking advantage of the photo opportunity with these motorcycles. Special thanks to Zoe Gough for being the back-up vehicle accompanied by co-pilot Mariana Manning. One stop they were at the ready for, turned out to just be a loose strap on a saddle bag and a quick extra tighten on another motorcycles rear vision mirror. Nothing too serious, which is always preferable.

My thanks go to Marianne for contributing to the run report and for her following reports

Colin Skeats Royal Enfield’s TANK plus a brief history of the history of a RE Bullet

Royal Enfield Bullet Since 1948 the Royal Enfield Bullet takes the crown as the longest running motorcycle model in continuous production, a reliable favourite. In 1952 the Royal Enfield Bullet was chosen as the most suitable bike for the Indian Police force and in 1954, their government ordered 800 of the 350cc model and they were produced on what was considered low-tech equipment. In more recent times, Royal Enfield is selling motorcycles in about 50 countries worldwide, even surpassing global sales of Harley-Davidson in 2015. This fine example pictured has had a fuel tank upgrade. From the standard 13 Litres to a made-to-fit 18 Litre tank which was made in India. This up-size was done to enable it's rider to make longer trips, such as to the Brass Monkey Rally and it has turned out to be very economical on fuel.

*Specifications* Top Speed: 70 MPH Wheel Base: 54.72 inches Weight; 359 lbs+

Marianna’s report on the Harley belonging to Mark Browne, Ross VCC member Harley-Davidson began to fit frames with Sidecar mounting lugs in the early 1900s. In 1914 the first sidecar was made and production continued until 2012, when they were sadly dropped from the range in favour of the new Tri-Glide trike. Harley-Davidson motorcycles with sidecars were first used by the U.S. Army when it ordered twelve units with mounted machine guns on them for the General Pershing's 1916 Mexican Excursion. The V twin cylinder system fires both plugs on every revolution; one for power and the other for providing a harmless spark during the exhaust stroke and this remained a feature of V-Twins until 1961.

You will notice there is no brake lever on the handle bars. There is only a rear brake drum actuated by a long steel rod attached to a pedal on the right side. The following year, 1928, a front brake drum was introduced as the standard. The clutch is also a pedal system with the gear changer knob mounted on the tank, both on the left side.
