From the Chair…
This month I have missed most of the Branch activities for one reason or another. At the start of June, we were in Lower Hutt, visiting our daughter and son-in-law for the birth of our first granddaughter.
While down there I got the chance to visit a private collection of around 50 motorcycles, mostly 80s and 90s Japanese. Several interesting bikes. They are in an industrial area of Upper Hutt and the owner has a coffee bar on the premises and opens on occasions for group visits and social meetings. Last time I was down there he organised a large Motorcycle Show at Brewtown in Upper Hutt, to which we took my daughter's Can-Am trike and her husband's Triumph solo and 1988 Suzuki with sidecar.
“Road trips are the equivalent of human wings.
Ask me to go on one, anywhere.
We’ll stop in every small town and learn the history and stories, feel the ground and capture the spirit. Then we’ll turn it into our own story that will live inside our history to carry with us, always. Because stories are more important than things.”
On the way back home, I caught a nasty cold, which kept me away from George Vuletich's funeral and the monthly meeting. By the next weekend, I felt better and attended the Molloy Trophy Rally, but in a “modern” as Lyn thought I was not up to travelling in a car without a heater. I have still not completely shaken off the bug. The run, organised by Ron and Beryl Shugg, took us through some interesting coastal scenery around Matauri Bay to finish for lunch at the Whangaroa Fishing Club. Congratulations to Warren and Robyn MacKay on winning the quiz.

Northern Club Captain’s Report
Here we are at the end of another busy month and halfway through the year. We lost another long-standing member of our Club last month, George Vuletich. He had a very colourful send off with many of our members attending his funeral.
Ron and Beryl Shugg organised a brilliant Molloy Rally on the 17th June, which was attended by a record number of members, 28 of us, with two more meeting us at our lunch venue.
Thanks Ron & Beryl for your hospitality before setting off, with teas and coffees.
Our heartfelt sympathy and support goes to his Family.
It was a most enjoyable day out around Matauri Bay and Whangaroa – the weather behaved too!
Our Club meeting is on July 8th , 1-30pm followed by a cuppa, so come along and enjoy the socialising. Make the most of these daytime meetings.
22nd of July is our annual prize giving dinner at Mill Bay.
Happy & safe motoring.

As it was…
A short history of our Club “ or how it began”.
A welcome to the newly formed Northland Branch appeared in the Beaded Wheels, Vol. 9, No 33 March 1963.
Things moved along quite well, and the Branch was well on the road. Whangarei members met at the Scout Den, in Lovatt Cres, calling themselves the “Whangarei Section”. The first meeting was held on July 4 1963.
Present at that meeting were: T G Royan in the Chair, Mr & Mrs E Music, Mr & Mrs B Long, Mr & Mrs J Love, Mr & Mrs J Marks, Msser L Love, B Ludlow, P Holt, G Dowdell, J Eilering, B Perkins, I King, J Meharry, T Webb, G Ralls, N Ganley, Miss I Watts, and Miss C ?, with apologies from J McDonald.
But…
By October 1963 things weren’t as they seemed, and after an unfortunate incident of misunderstandings, the Whangarei Section proclaimed their dissatisfaction at a meeting held on November 2, 1963. Things moved very quickly and only five days later a special meeting was held in Whangarei to discuss the possibility of forming their own branch. A steering committee was elected until such time as a new branch was accepted by the National Executive.
The steering committee was, Chairman: C Brown, Secretary J Marks, Committee member J McDonald.
Then on the 21st March 1964 a special General Meeting was held at the Ambulance Hall, Kaikohe. The business of the meeting was, quote, “The Formation of the Whangarei Branch.” It was moved by C. Cord, “that the Northland Branch be in favour of forming their own Branch”, this was seconded by Paul Johnston and the motion was carried with one vote against. Unquote.
The Northland Branch continued to operate as a club until 1967 when they resigned from the NZVCC, and members joined the Whangarei Branch.
The “Whangarei Branch” got off the ground on the 14th June, 1964 when a meeting was held at the Scout Den, Lovatt Cres. When…quote” Mr George Manning of the Northland Car Club in the chair.”
There were 32 members present, election of officers was the first matter on the agenda which was carried out swiftly and with no problems. The Chairman, Secretary, and Club Captain being elected unopposed with everyone satisfied with the results.
To be continued.
