the Stuttgart design office of Ferdinand Porsche to develop a race car based on the 750 kg formula. Work on the Auto Union Type A (internally, Porsche called it the Type 22) began in March of 1933. Just one year later, Hans Stuck set a world record driving the car on the AVUS circuit in Berlin. When the innovative Auto Union and Mercedes-Benz race cars burst onto the international racing scene, the legend of the Silver Arrows was born. Swift as an arrow, these legendary powerhouses captivated audiences with their futuristic design and revolutionary technology. While Mercedes-Benz favoured front-mounted engines, Auto Union was the first to place the engine behind the driver. This mid-engine layout remains the standard in Formula One today. In the years that followed, Auto Union set several world records, winning numerous hill climbs, three German championships, and the European championship in 1936 with the advanced Auto Union Type C. And the rest is history. Or maybe not quite, as one part of the story has yet to be told. Few people know that while the Grand Prix race cars were being developed, Auto Union AG and the Ferdinand Porsche design office also planned a street-legal sports sedan. The concept papers called the vehicle “Schnellsportwagen”, apparently its intended marketing name. Today, with its distinctive characteristics, the car most closely resembles a classic Gran Turismo.
Auto Union Type 52
Audi commissioned Crosthwaite & Gardner to build the Auto Union Type 52 using surviving archive documents, plans, and design sketches. The British restoration experts also curated the Silver Arrows for Audi’s historic vehicle collection and, after multi-year work, finished building the Schnellsportwagen in 2023. All components are custom-made and were handcrafted specifically for the model. At over five meters long, the Auto Union Type 52 makes an impact. Its elongated silhouette reflects how its engineers designed the car for optimal aerodynamics and maximum performance. Unlike its Grand Prix siblings, the car is more suitable for everyday driving, as the designers intended, with an overhead roof, headlights, and room for luggage. There is also space for the two spare tires. But that is where the three-passenger car’s comfort features end. As is typical for a race car, the Auto Union Type 52 driver sits in the middle, with the rear passenger seats slightly offset to the side. With three passengers, 70 kilograms of luggage, and 150 kilograms of equipment, the technical data sheet lists the car’s total weight at 1,750 kilograms, with an unladen weight of 1,300 kilograms. While the engine, transmission, and open 5-speed gearbox were taken from the Grand Prix car, the engineers chose different technical solutions for the suspension and damping. Instead of a combination of transverse leaf springs and friction dampers like the Auto Union Type 22, the Type 52 uses longitudinal torsion spring suspension in combination with hydraulic dampers.
During development, the 29-gallon fuel tank was relocated under the seats. In the Grand Prix race car, the significantly larger tank is located directly behind the driver in the vehicle Arrows an ideal weight distribution whether the tank is full or empty. Both the Auto Union Type 52 and the Type 22 use drum brakes on all four wire wheels.
The Auto Union Type 52 was not handed down in a finished state, so there are no pictures of a finished model. During Auto Union AG’s dissolution in the Russian occupation zone following World War II, most of the historic Grand Prix race cars disappeared, as did many files and photographs. Similarly, there are no verified reports from contemporaries that would allow conclusions to be drawn about the planned Schnellsportwagen’s final configuration insofar as there ever was one. However, the plans provide a clear vision of the direction of development and the goals the engineers were pursuing.
Audi Tradition presents the—Auto Union Type 52
During the building phase, Audi Tradition and the experts at Crosthwaite & Gardiner were in constant and intensive communication, during which Timo Witt, Head of Audi’s historical vehicle collection, had to resolve a range of technicalities. Decisions for or against individual technical solutions had to be made. Timo Witt today, after finishing the car project. “One insight that came out of our intensive exchange is that the developers in the 1930s would probably have had to adjust some of the technical details in the course of testing, too.
Similarly, we had to lengthen the Auto Union Type 52’s wheelbase compared to the original design documents because it was technically unavoidable in combination with other components such as the front suspension, engine, steering, and transmission. The interior is inspired by the Auto Union Grand Prix race cars, with a modern interpretation of colours and fabrics. None of the documents specified the colour the car would have had at the time. So, Audi Tradition again took the race car as the foundation and chose Cellulose Silver for the finish. When it came to the engine that would power the Auto Union Type 52, Audi consciously decided to deviate from the designers’ original plan.
Audi Tradition used the 16-cylinder engine from the Auto Union Type C; its output was not restricted to the Type 52 to ensure compatibility with the Grand Prix race cars. For that reason, the engine runs on a special methanol mixture. Based on the information handed down, which Audi Tradition has interpreted and implemented with considerable care. The Auto Union Type 52, will be presented for the first time at Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024, is the closest approximation to the Schnellsportwagen Auto Union Type 52 that was imagined some 90 years ago but never built, until now.

2024—CENTRAL HAWKES BAY 2nd VINTAGE RALLY organised by
Bruce Poole
The idea to organise and host a CHB Branch Vintage Car Rally, began with a Trophy that was donated to the Hawkes Bay VCC Branch about 13 years ago. The trophy was presented to the winner of the Hawkes Bay Vintage Car only rally. However the Rally lapsed after a couple of years and the trophy remained on display in their trophy cabinet. It has now been returned to Bruce Poole at the CHB VCC Branch and will be presented each year to the winner of the CHB Vintage Car Rally.
The Rally is opened to all VCC members and VCC eligible vehicles, (i.e. 30 years or older). However the 1st place Trophy, 2nd and 3rd placings and prizes will only be for the Vintage Car section. This means cars built between 1st January 1919 up until 31st December 1931. A separate prize will be presented for Non Vintage entries.
The Days Programme
The Rally will start from Russell Park in Waipukurau. Arrival time is from 10.45am, briefing will be at 11.00am and first car away approx 11.15am.
The first section of the run will take you to a sheltered, BYO lunch stop and hopefully, the weather is fine, you may have some daffodils to pick if you wish.
Part of your entry fee will be donated to the Takapau Medical Centre.
The second section of the Rally is the competitive part. There will be some silent checks and speed changes beginning at 2.00pm. This will take you on a variety of scenic back country roads in CHB and finish at the Waipukurau Club in Waipukurau for a BBQ meal and prize giving.

CHB Branch of the VCC—Chairman’s Report—August 2024
The latest statistics show, our club has 62 Branch member 38 Joint members making a total of 100 members. We just need to encourage some of our members to come along to our car rally events, meeting and dinner nights.
On the 14th July we had a good run to Porangahau, with lunch at the Hotel, organised by Rod and Scarlet McKenzie, a bit wet and dirty, but people in Vintage cars love this. Just got to make sure everything is tightly secured so nothing falls off on these bumpy country roads.
Remember the Cancer/Daffodil Day is on the Sunday 25th of August (hopefully you have this date marked on your calendar) starting with a car display, show & shine at Russell Park Waipukurau. Then a run out into the country, all under control with surprises along the way.
Just a mention from Glen Clements the North Island Club Captain regards supporting neighbouring clubs and sorting out dates so they don’t clash.
On Saturday 7th September CHB VCC 2nd Vintage Rally will be held, information and entry forms are in “The Bleat”. Remember this is open to all VCC eligible vehicles. The main trophy will be for Vintage only vehicles. Helpers are required for this event. Contact Bruce Poole if you can help.
With all this fog about night driving can be hazardous, keep head lights glass clean and drive safely

Sixth Annual Mid-Week Run “Taranaki Tour”
14th to 18th October 2024
Organisers: Rod and Scarlett McKenzie
Scarlett and Rod McKenzie are back from checking out the lie of the land in Taranaki and planning for this year’s tour and adventure, the sixth similar adventure for the branch. Quite a lot of the travelling entrants will be on the Highways and roads of Taranaki. The bush-covered roads up the mountain are narrow and sealed but worth the trip for the views. And like the rest of the roads around the country you will discover many more potholes and some of them are big!
You should plan to leave CHB by 8:00am on the morning of Monday 14th October travelling over the “Saddle Road” to meet all the other entrants at the “Church Café” on S/H1 in Sanson where we will have morning tea/coffee and your instruction sheets will be distributed.
“Entry Forms” for this trip will be available at the meal night meeting on Wednesday 17th July, or we can email them to you if you want when they are produced.
The motels where we will be staying in Hawera and New Plymouth will be shown on the entry form. However, the motels we have chosen for our Taranaki adventure are:
Hawera, Kerry Lane Motel on Kerry Lane which is about 3km from Hawera on the New Plymouth side of town phone 06 278 1918 for the night of 14th October.
New Plymouth, Pukekura Motor Lodge at 141 Coronation Avenue phone 06 759 4210 for the nights of 15th , 16th and 17th October.
Please phone to make your reservation at each motel and tell them that you are joining our CHB VCC tour to Taranaki.
Note: We will not be going to overnight at Kawhia as we first thought as the facilities there are not large enough to handle us all, they are very expensive and meals may have been an issue.
Be prepared to travel around 1200km and spend some money on fuel, motels and meals!
On July 3, 1909, the first Hudson car came out of a small factory in Detroit. The Model 20 (pictured) sported a four-cylinder, 22.5 horsepower engine, and its popularity led Hudson to the best first year of production in automotive history at the time, selling over 4,000 units.
Hudson’s early success allowed the company to expand and build a larger factory on the corner of Jefferson and Conner, where they began manufacturing six-cylinder engines. The Super Six engine carried Hudson to the height of their success in 1929, when they were the third largest U.S. auto maker, behind only Ford Motor Company and Chevrolet. The company went on to release popular models like the Essex in the 1920s, the Hudson Eight in the 1930s, and the Hudson Hornet, a successful racing muscle car manufactured from 1951 to 1954. The Hornet was also used by Pixar for the character Doc in the movie "Cars."
As the role of women increased in car-purchase decisions, automakers began to hire female designers. Hudson, wanting a female perspective on automotive design, hired Elizabeth Ann Thatcher in 1939, one of America's first female automotive designers. Her contributions to the 1941 Hudson included exterior trim with side lighting, interior instrument panel, interiors and interior trim fabrics. She designed for Hudson from 1939 into 1941, leaving the company when she married Joe Oros, then a designer for Cadillac. He later became head of the design team at Ford that created the Mustang

IMAGINE THIS You are at a drag-strip in a twin-turbo-powered Corvette Z06, a mile behind the starting line. You accelerate and blast across the starting line & pass a waiting dragster at 200 MPH, just as the 'tree' goes green. The dragster launches and within 3 seconds he catches, passes and beats you to the finish line, all within a quarter mile. Now that’s acceleration. The cost of this sort of performance? Approx. $1000 per second if nothing breaks!
TOP FUEL DRAGSTERS PUT INTO PERSPECTIVE
* These are piston engine cars, the 500 cubic-inch Hemi engine producing over 10,000 HP.
* At full throttle, the engine consumes approx. 1.5 gallons of nitro methane per second.
* At the 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture the flame front temperature measures over 7000 °F
* With 3000 cubic feet/minute of air being rammed in by the supercharger, the fuel mixture is com pressed into a near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle.
* The red-line is actually quite high at 9500 RPM - but including the burnout, the engine only has to sur vive 900 revolutions under load, turning only approximately 540 revolutions from light to light!
* A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to drive the dragster's supercharger!
* Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass.
* If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off or even split the block in half.
* After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400° F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow.
* Dragsters reach over 300 MPH before you have completed reading this sentence, 0 to 100 MPH in .8 seconds (the first 60 feet of the run) & 0 to 200 MPH in 2.2 seconds (the first 350 feet of the run). The top speed record is over 337MPH (as measured over the last 66 feet).
* They produce close to 8G during acceleration during parts of the run.
* Upon deployment of twin chutes at 300 MPH, minus 6 G’s.
The picture shows what 10,000 horsepower does to a tyre at launch!
