Danica Patrick—Racing Driver
Club Night 7.30pm 3rd Wednesday of every Month
On May 29, 2005, Danica Patrick made history by being the first woman to lead the Indianapolis 500. Occurring multiple times throughout the race, Patrick’s first moment in the lead happened on Lap 56 but was short-lived. Toward the end of the race, however, the IndyCar rookie retook the lead after the rest of the field made a pit stop on Lap 172.
The excitement around Patrick’s success in the race peaked when she battled Dan Wheldon for the lead starting on Lap 190, but Wheldon would prevail. While Patrick would not win the race, she still placed fourth, the best finish by a woman in Indy 500 history. Additionally, the performance earned her the 2005 IndyCar Series season Rookie of the Year award.
Patrick continued to race for the next 13 years, obtaining the highest finish for a woman in the Daytona 500, becoming the first woman to win an IndyCar Series race and collecting the most top-ten finishes by any woman in Sprint Cup competition.
Patrick began karting at Sugar River Raceway in Brodhead, Wisconsin. Her father acted as her crew chief and her mother kept statistics on her racing. Patrick had no role models or idols; she was never striving to achieve female goals, but aspired to be the best she could be. In her debut race, she crashed into a concrete wall at 25mph (40km) due to a brake failure. She was not injured. Patrick improved to finish second out of twenty drivers at the year's end after a twenty-two race schedule.
She gradually improved her eye to foot coordination, allowing her to set numerous age track records at Sugar River Raceway and Michiana Raceway Park. Following her interest in kart racing, Patrick dabbled in snowmobiles, motocross, and midget car racing.

Inventor of the car radio
On June 27th, 1895, Paul Galvin, inventor of the car radio, was born in Harvard, Illinois.
Galvin started Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in 1928 with his brother, Joseph, to build battery eliminators. Unfortunately, the stock market crashed a year later, taking away much of Galvin's business. Desperate to keep his company alive, Galvin recognized the growing car and radio industries, and decided to bring them together.
Galvin partnered with William P. Lear, future founder of the Lear Jet Corporation, who was running a radio parts company at the time, to develop an affordable car radio. In 1930, with engineers from both companies, Galvin successfully fitted a sizeable and sturdy car radio into his Studebaker and drove the car from Chicago to New Jersey to show off at the Radio Manufacturers Association Convention in June. Instead of registering with the trade show, Galvin instead drove his car to the Atlantic City pier and played his car radio to attract attention.
The success of Galvin's car radio allowed his company to survive the depression. To further increase sales, Galvin decided to come up with a brand name “Motorola”. Galvin turned his Motorola radio into one of the first successful car radios. He died in 1959 at age 64 and was inducted into the “The Automotive Hall of Fame” in 2008.

Saturday 7th September 2024—CENTRAL HAWKES BAY 2nd VINTAGE RALLY organised by Bruce Poole
The idea to organise and host a CHB Branch Vintage Car Rally, began with a Trophy that was donated to the Hawkes Bay VCC Branch about 13 years ago. The trophy was presented to the winner of the Hawkes Bay Vintage Car only rally. However the Rally lapsed after a couple of years and the trophy remained on display in their trophy cabinet. It has now been returned to Bruce Poole at the CHB VCC Branch and will be presented each year to the winner of the CHB Vintage Car Rally.
The Rally is opened to all VCC members and VCC eligible vehicles, (i.e. 30 years or older). However the 1st place Trophy, 2nd and 3rd placings and prizes will only be for the Vintage Car section. A separate prize will be presented for Non Vintage entries.
The Rally will start from Russell Park in Waipukurau. Arrival time is from 10.45am, briefing will be at 11.00am and first car away approx 11.15am
The first section of the run will take you to a sheltered, BYO lunch stop and hopefully, and the weather is fine, you may have some daffodils to pick if you wish.
Part of your entry fee will be donated to the Takapau Medical Centre.
The second section of the Rally is the competitive part. There will be some silent checks and speed changes beginning at 2.00pm. This will take you on a variety of scenic back country roads in CHB and finish at the

CHB Branch of the VCC—Chairman’s Report—July 2024
Half way through the year already! Time to get a little bit excited for Christmas!
The club AGM was held at the Waipukurau Bowling Club, an excellent meal before the AGM followed by an ordinary monthly meeting.
Brian Conner has stood down as CHBVCC Secretary, he has been trying to do this for a while now, thank you Brian for the work you have done. Ella Domper has taken this job on. Thank you Ella for stepping up we look forward to working with you.
Iain Gollan has been replaced by Paul Jensen, welcome Paul, and thank you to Iain for your contribution to the club and committee. All other club officers remain the same.
Still looking for ideas for the Annual Cancer day on Sunday 25th of August 2024. Any idea's would be very much appreciated.
The torque heads run on Thursdays have been entertaining, the run to Fielding to look at an agriculture display, a collection of 51 Holden’s and a classic motorbike display, a good day out.
The weather is closing in now, very foggy nights making driving unpleasant. Soon we will be complaining about the heat!
So drive safely, see you at the next club events.

Sixth Annual Mid-Week Run “Taranaki Tour”
14th to 18th October 2024
Organisers: Rod and Scarlett McKenzie
Scarlett and Rod McKenzie are back from checking out the lie of the land in Taranaki and planning for this year’s tour and adventure, the sixth similar adventure for the branch. Quite a lot of the travelling entrants will be on the Highways and roads of Taranaki. The bush-covered roads up the mountain are narrow and sealed but worth the trip for the views. And like the rest of the roads around the country you will discover many more potholes and some of them are big!
You should plan to leave CHB by 8:00am on the morning of Monday 14th October travelling over the “Saddle Road” to meet all the other entrants at the “Church Café” on S/H1 in Sanson where we will have morning tea/coffee and your instruction sheets will be distributed.
“Entry Forms” for this trip will be available at the meal night meeting on Wednesday 17th July, or we can email them to you if you want when they are produced.
The motels where we will be staying in Hawera and New Plymouth will be shown on the entry form. However, the motels we have chosen for our Taranaki adventure are:
Hawera, Kerry Lane Motel on Kerry Lane which is about 3km from Hawera on the New Plymouth side of town phone 06 278 1918 for the night of 14th October.
New Plymouth, Pukekura Motor Lodge at 141 Coronation Avenue phone 06 759 4210 for the nights of 15th , 16th and 17th October.
Please phone to make your reservation at each motel and tell them that you are joining our CHB VCC tour to Taranaki.
Note: We will not be going to overnight at Kawhia as we first thought as the facilities there are not large enough to handle us all, they are very expensive and meals may have been an issue.
Be prepared to travel around 1200km and spend some money on fuel, motels and meals!
Club Captains Report—Laurie's Lot—July—2024
Welcome to another year of old school motoring. It was a quiet month for outings.
There were a few of us from our club went to Fielding for a get together with some of the members from the Coach House Museum for morning tea and a talk. It was interesting and we had a look at a very old style wheel clamp which was real heavy. After the talk some went and looked through the Museum for a while.
We then went and had lunch at Murrays Irish bar which was very nice. From there we went and saw some Holden cars and after that we headed to a Motor Bike Museum which had heap of very old bikes and some newer models.
Coming up on Sunday 14th July is Rods Beach Run details in this Bleat.
We would like to welcome our new Secretary Ella Domper and a new Committee Member Paul Jensen. Thank you for stepping up and taking on the challenge.
Safe Motoring and stay safe.

Manawatu Branch 2024—49th Night Rally—(brass monkey) by Bruce Poole
This year Paul Squire and I gathered at the Manawatu club rooms for a quick briefing for the 16 competitors The first car was away at 6:30pm. Our time was 6:47pm at a speed of 35.1mph. A short run to carry over the saddle road (4 times during the night) down new roads, along the southern ranges to join up with the Pahiatua, Palmerston North Road, to turn right into Tararua Road.
Down back gravel Roads to Kopikopiko and then north to join up with the Pahiatua Palmerston North road and into Pahiatua township.
North to the Hopelands Road and Oringi and SHW2. Left into Maharahara Road, into Pinfold Road,
Coppermine Road, Pinfold Road again, Oxford Road to the bottom of Saddle Road. Through Ashurst and back to the club rooms for soup, buns and savouries.
A total of between 110 - 130 miles 3 hours 38 minutes duration and 2 cars were 1 minute out. 2 were first equal and we were one of the lucky winners (received a chocolate bar).
First equal - Vardon Heath and Viv Spiers, Bruce Poole and Paul Squire.
Second Place - Phil and Lansie Roberton
Third Place - Rod and Linda O'Keefe
A great run, lots of new roads (which would be nice to see in the daylight) thanks to the club Captain Derek Haycock and kitchen helpers. Great rally but we did not see Laurie and Gloria Malcolmson CHB at the end of the run?
Some wayward lads have stranded their Sheffield-Simplex in a lake. The smiling chap on the left is Winston Churchill.
Is it time to scrap paper stickers that display vehicle registrations, warrants of fitness, and road user charges and digitalise the whole process?
The Automobile Association (AA) says yes, believing it could save road users and the taxpayer a fair chunk of money. And the Government seems to be of the same mind, so change may not be far away. Vehicle registrations and road user charges are significant funding tools for the Government's transport projects. According to NZ Autocar, they add roughly $470 million to the Government's budget and cost $50 million to administer.
But the AA says the current system of windshield stickers and accompanying paperwork is outdated and should be dropped, because it is pretty much all digital anyway. "All that information is currently available," AA's principal adviser for motoring policy Terry Collins said. "If you get stopped by a police car, the police already know whether your road user charges are up to date, whether your vehicle is registered, or whether you've got a warrant of fitness. He said AA thinks removing paperwork and other administration costs would see savings passed through to motorists. "If you use the road user charges, it's 10% more expensive to buy it at the counter than it is to buy it online. "Yet, they're still posting all the paperwork, which can take up to 10 working days." Collins added that the only reason paper stickers still exist is so motorists can keep up to date with when everything is due, but he said the government already has systems that help this.
Last week, a new NZTA app that streamlines the process was announced. The app displays expiry dates for cars' Warrants of Fitness, Vehicle Registrations, and Road User Charge end distance. It also allows road users to pay for everything in one place. Collins said this will make "life easier for our members and motorists". "With friendly reminders, they're more likely to get that done if they know it's due." He also said compliance would likely improve through a more digitised system. "Fewer excuses around 'I forgot' or 'I didn't know it was due' because now you've got all these reminders going out.
“His only suggestion was to keep the paper stickers for older drivers who use technology less frequently or people in rural areas. "Some type of alternative may be necessary for them to make the application," he said. "But to be honest, we probably just don't need them."
1 News approached Transport Minister Simeon Brown to see if the Government was looking into a digitised system. Brown replied with a statement, saying: "The Government is committed to cutting out unnecessary bureaucracy and delivering services New Zealanders need in a convenient and timely way!!

Edsel Ford—Built Rolls-Royce engines—
by Auto Heritage
On June 12, 1940, Edsel Ford agreed to build Rolls-Royce engines to use in British and U.S. airplanes for World War II. Director general of the Office of Production Management and former president of General Motors, William Knudsen, approached Henry and Edsel Ford with a proposal to manufacture 9,000 engines earlier that spring. Ford Motor Company had experience building planes, producing the Trimotor just a decade earlier, but never on the scale that Knudsen wanted for the Rolls-Royce aircraft engines. Nevertheless, Ford’s success mass-producing other vehicles gave them the confidence to go ahead with the project, at least until Henry Ford saw Britain’s announcement of the agreement. While Edsel supported the project, his father opposed doing business with Britain or any other country. Upon hearing that Ford would build 6,000 engines specifically for British use, he canceled the deal. Henry only wanted the planes to be used for American defense, but as it became more certain that the United States would join the war, he reaccepted the deal.
My lovely Mk4 Zephyr V6. Purchased new in August 1971, I have cared for this vehicle for 53 years and it has always been housed. It has never been in an accident and the paint is original (Ivory white) as is the upholstery which is red. A complete new exhaust system from front to back including mufflers was fitted in 2019 also new boots on all steering joints and front forks in 2021. New battery in 2022. New oil pump drive fitted last month. Drivers side seat fitted with new springs and padding. Tyres are high profile radials and near new also new carpets. The motor was rebuilt at 93,000 miles and it has now done 135,900 miles. The mileage is genuine. The only reason I am selling this vehicle is I am now too old at 87 to drive it.
