Classic car lovers’ dream—Far North barn find wows auctioneer—

It’s El Dorado for car collectors everywhere the barn find that uncovers rare and desirable vehicles. And lovers of rare vehicles are in for a treat with the 120-plus lots that include plenty of in-demand classic cars found in a barn in the Far North and are now up for auction. The find includes old Jaguars and Daimlers, Mercedes Benz, Peugeots, Austins, a Model T Ford more than 100 years old and a bright red Morris Minor, with all going under the hammer in two online auctions run by Northland Auctions out of Kerikeri.

The auctions, which also includes parts, machinery and tools, will excite motor enthusiasts, but for auctioneer and Northland Auctions owner Brad Jackson, it’s a dream come true.

The Model T Ford that is more than 100 years old, found in the big barn find in the Bay of Islands that has more than 120 vehicles.

I’ve been doing auctions for about 22 years and this is by far the best find I’ve ever come across. I watch American Pickers (US TV show that follows a team as they scour the country for hidden gems in junkyards, basements, garages and barns) and have always dreamed one day to find something similar, and here it is. Jackson said it’s not often he laughs when he sees items for the auction, but he did when he went to the Bay of Islands property where the items were contained in a 1000sqm workshop.

‘’I can’t really repeat the first words I said as you wouldn’t print them, but I just said to my son ‘Wow! it’s amazing’. It was just like American Pickers and I’d always hoped for a find like that. ‘’It was like a supermarket, but instead of being full of food, it was packed with all these classic cars, aeroplanes, parts and memorabilia. I’d never seen anything like it, but to have it here in Northland blew me away.

One of the classic, and in great condition, Austins found in a barn.

by Mike Dinsdale

Classic car lovers’ dream—Far North barn find wows auctioneer—

He said the elderly collector had a love of automobiles and aeroplanes and had collected them over the years, along with many spare parts, many of which can no longer be sourced in New Zealand. He did all the work on everything himself so it’s all well looked after. ‘’When I got the call the person said their dad had a few cars in his workshop to sell and I got a big surprise when I went to have a look. It was a huge collection, with some outstanding examples of vintage and classic vehicles.

‘’He had a big love of automobiles and aviation and he’d spent many years building up his collection - I think his attitude was life’s too short to drive a boring car - and while some have been sold over the years, we’ve got everything that’s left and it will be sold.” Jackson said there had been huge interest in the auction, with details sent to all car clubs across the country, and he expected Kerikeri to be buzzing for the two-day auction as people fly in to bid.

Jackson also owns All About Auctions, in Auckland, and some of the finds from the barn had already been sold there. ’He had a collection of great quality mobility scooters and we’ve sold all those, while we had 500 different lots of his model car and planes, and they’ve all gone in the Auckland auctions ... there was just so much great stuff in there

‘’He has put most of the regos on hold so it won’t be too much hassle to get them back on the road and there are so many parts it’s unbelievable, with the experts saying you just can’t get them here any more and would have to order them from overseas, if they were available at all.’’

Jackson said there was really something for everybody among the lots and he was sure there would be plenty of people going away from the auctions very happy with their buys.

‘’I mean, there are just so many great examples of some classic vehicles here and it’s going to be a big weekend when we hold the auctions - I can’t wait.’’

As for what he thinks the haul will be worth, he says that’s for the market to decide.

The first auction of tools and machinery, including diggers, bulldozers, ride-on lawnmowers and trucks, was held on site in Pakaraka on Saturday 21st September 2024.

A classic 1974 Daimler Sovereign, with an old Mercedes, are among a plethora of old vehicles found in a Bay of Islands barn.

On September 25, 1924, President and Chairman Alfred Sloan officially opened the General Motors Proving Grounds (pictured) in Milford, MI. It was the world’s first dedicated automotive testing facility, and was comprised of two buildings and 5.5 miles of test roads on 1,125 undeveloped acres about 40 miles west of Detroit. The Proving Grounds were the brainchild of Sloan, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) electrical engineering graduate who understood the value of product testing and saw the need for a dedicated place to do it. Previously, the norm for auto companies was testing on public roads. The Milford property was selected due to its varied terrain features. The Proving Grounds have been in constant use and evolution ever since. Today, the site includes over 4,000 acres and employs more than 4,500 people.

CENTRAL

CHB Vintage Rally organised by Bruce Poole and Ken Lyons held on Saturday 7th September started with the first car away at 11 00am. The run through Central Hawkes Bay country side via Waipawa, and through the roads around Onga Onga stopping at a property belonging to Jason and Jo Ward.

Here we settle down to have our lunch under the trees which made it very pleasant. After lunch most of the women and some of the men wandered down to a field that was full of daffodils. Soon bunches of daffodils were appearing in the back of most cars.

At 1.30pm we travelled through a farm track to the starting point of the competitive section of the rally. This track had been badly damaged in Cyclone Gabrielle, but now back to a nice farm drive which exited onto Highway 50. The cars left at 1 minute intervals through many back roads, down to Takapau, Norsewood, and up to Ashley Clinton. We came back onto Highway 50 again, and travelled through Onga Onga back to Waipukurau.

On most of these roads we had to travel at given average speeds. Ellison Road had an average speed of 23 mph, Paget Road a speed of 25mph, and Bridge Street was 28 mph. These speeds proved frustrating for some drivers, who overtook others trying to keep to the designated speeds.

On the same route there were 6 silent checks pegged into the ground, but one fell foul in the wind, which really got up during the run.

The run ended at the Waipukurau Club where our finishing time was noted and frustrations and excuses were aired. A few ales were downed while waiting for the results which were as follows.

First Vintage Section: Graham and Heather Cheer.

Second: Peter and Suzanne McCool.

Third: Neil and Pat Malcolm.

The winner of the non vintage section were Barry and Lynne Smales in the angle box. Barry then offered his trophy winning. Anglia for sale, but promptly turned down a 5 dollar deposit. No pleasing some people. It was then time to enjoy a barbecue dinner. A great day and a lot of fun. Thank you to Bruce and Ken for another great organised Rally.

Graham Brothers

On September 12, 1882, Joseph Graham, the oldest of three brothers who made a life in the auto industry, was born. After successfully beginning their careers in the glass industry, Joseph (pictured above, middle), along with his brothers Robert and Ray (pictured above), started making kits in 1919 to modify Ford Motor Company Model Ts into trucks. Then, they started building their own trucks under the Graham Brothers brand using a variety of engines from different manufacturers. The brothers eventually settled on Dodge engines for their trucks, their trucks started to be sold in Dodge dealerships, and then the Dodge Brothers ultimately bought the Graham brothers truck company in 1925 and hired each of them for executive positions.

In 1927, with the Dodge brothers gone and a bank trying to sell the company, the Graham brothers elected to buy the Paige-Detroit Motor Company and make their own cars under the Graham-Paige name. Their truck brand disappeared when Walter Chrysler bought Dodge, but the Graham brothers made cars through 1947 when the assets of Graham-Paige were purchased by Kaiser-Frazer.

Joseph Graham died in July, 1970.

CHB Manawatu Branch combined Quiz night Dinner and Meeting by Gloria Malcolmson

CHB quiz night held in Dannevirke on Wednesday 18th September at the Service and Citizen's Club, between the Manawatu Branch. There were approximately 45 members attend from both clubs. Our quiz master had put up a few brain teasers around the room first. Then came an arrangement of weird and wonderful questions he had found from all sorts of places. There were all sorts of answers that made for lots of laughter. There were 43 questions and brain teasers. No all correct answers from anyone however, we ended up down to 32 correct answers and this was Harry Lord from CHB VCC. Derek from the Manawatu Branch presented Harry with the Trophy they had won the year before.

The meal was wonderful with many comments coming from both branches.

Esther from the Manawatu Branch made the suggestion the Manawatu Branch host the quiz next year. Everyone was in favour of doing that. The new motorway may be open by September 2025?

The evening went very well and everyone enjoyed themselves. We are looking forward to next years quiz to be held at the Manawatu Branch.

1956 Hastings Blossom Parade—Transport Through the Ages

Sadly, Glenys Cox wife of Neil, passed away recently at home after some weeks of indifferent health. Glenys and Neil had been married for 33 years. Glenys trained as a nurse and worked in that profession for many years. Glenys enjoyed vintage motoring with Neil while living in Whangarei and Brisbane before settling a few years ago in Waipukurau.

Her spare time hobbies were quilt making and very fine needle work and stitcheries which she enjoyed and was very good at. She displayed some of her work on one of our CHB Rallies a few years ago.

Neil and Peaches, their Beagle pup, would like to thank the CHB VCC Branch Committee for the box of condiments and fellow members for your condolences during this sad

The origin of the term 'quilt' is linked to the Latin word culcita, meaning a bolster, cushion, or stuffed sack. The word came into the English language from the French word cuilte. The first use of the term seems to have been in England in the 13th century.

The sewing techniques of piecing, appliqué, and quilting have been used to create clothing and furnishings in various parts of the world for several millennia, and a wide range of unique quilting styles and techniques have evolved around the globe.

The earliest known quilted garment is depicted on the carved ivory igure of a Pharaoh dating from the ancient Egyptian First Dynasty. In 1924 archaeologists discovered a quilted floor covering in Mongolia, estimated to date between 100 BC and 200 AD. In Europe, quilting has been part of the needlework tradition since about the fifth century. Early objects contained Egyptian cotton, which may indicate that Egyptian and Mediterranean trade provided a conduit for the technique. However, quilted objects were relatively rare in Europe until approximately the twelfth century, when quilted bedding and other items appeared after the return of the Crusaders from the Middle East. The medieval quilted gambeson, aketon and arming doublet were garments worn under or instead of chain mail or plate armour. These later developed into the quilted doublet worn as part of European male clothing from the fourteenth to seventeenth century. The earliest known surviving European bed quilt is the Tristan quilt, which was made in latefourteenth century Italy from linen padded with wool. The blocks across its centre are scenes from the legend of Tristan. The quilt is 320 × 287cm (126×113in) and is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
