Some notes on the “Wanderer” motor car—by Neil Cox

Further to the article in the August “Bleat” where it was noted that the German motor firm of “Auto Union” was formed in 1932 by the merger of Audi, DKW, Horsch and Wanderer, all German automobile manufacturers.

Neil Cox, one of our CHB VCC members has some memories of the “Wanderer” vehicle. Several years ago while living in Whangarei my panel-beater friend was told by his sister, who lived in Nelson, that there was a car chassis in a local orchard. He quickly flew down to Nelson and inspected the remains of the vehicle. The chassis which was reasonably complete, was a very early “Wanderer” which was a two seater car with the passenger behind the driver. The front axle and differential were there, but the body was long gone. A crop spraying tank had been fitted in its place, with the resulting unit towed by a tractor for orchard use. The original engine had been removed and an engine of unknown origin had been fitted. A large private collection in Whangarei had a brand new complete rolling chassis with new spare parts and took kits for the same year “Wanderer” which had been located at a dealership in Sydney, Australia some time before.

Some notes on the Hudson motor vehicles in Auckland—by Neil Cox

My father served his apprenticeship on Hudson motor cars in the 1920’s with Dominion Motors in Auckland when the enterprise was based behind what is now the “Civic Theatre” in Albert St. The Studebaker agent was there for many years. Dominion Motors were well known for assembling Morris cars, initially the “Bullnose” model and later the flat nose version. The assembling of the Mini came many years later. They were also agents for Hudson, Essex, Buick, Packard, Fiat, Crossley bus chassis, Clyno, Dort, Maxwell, Bean and Manchester trucks. I have a photo which was taken around 1927-8 after the take-over of Gillet Motors in 1926. The photo shows the main building and the staff of the time, all 91 of them, including four women. I have in my memorabilia collection a Hudson Motor Company key fob which is in pristine condition which I treasure.

Hudson Motor Car Company was a car manufacturer based in Detroit, Michigan, U.S..The company was formed in February 1909 by eight Detroit businessmen to produce motor cars that would sell for less than US$1000. The brand was named after the principal capital contributor, Joseph L Hudson. Hudson introduced several innovations over many years of production that continued until 1957. In 1954, Hudson merged with Nash-Kelvinator to form American Motors Corporation (AMC). The Hudson name was continued through the 1957 model year, after which it was discontinued.

1937 Morris 8 Series1—by Simon Henderson

The Wilson family have been members of the Otago Branch of the Vintage Car Club for many year and once again drove in the Daffodil Rally for Cancer on Sunday, August 25th 2024. A beloved family car continues to create positive memories for its owner. Ray Wilson’s 1937 Morris 8 Series 1 was first bought by his father, James Wilson, in September 1939 for £198 (about $26,000). It was a time when car ownership was more of a rarity and he recalled being very proud his family to be able to own one. "We owned the only car in our street," he said.

The car doubled as a practical work horse such as being used to deliver milk during World War 2, the back seat removed to accommodate the bottles. It was also used to transport firewood, the seat again taken out so the small car could be filled to the brim with wood. "Dad would cut these lengths of firewood the length of the back seat. He made it work." Mr Wilson recalled travelling with his family to Christchurch for the Christmas holiday break. "Mum would be in the front with our baby sister on her knee and I would be in the back with my other sister on top of the suitcases." "That is what you did. It was an all-day trip to Christchurch, but it did not matter." To keep costs down, instead of staying in a motel, they would do a house exchange with a family in Christchurch, who would spend their holiday at the same time in Dunedin. When he was about 15, he learned to drive in the Morris 8 with his dad. "He took me to the Mosgiel-Outram Road and said ‘you are driving now’." After serving his father well for years, the Morris 8 was eventually superseded and from 1977 it languished at the back of a garage.

It was given a new lease on life when Mr Wilson’s son Craig, an apprentice panel beater at the time, undertook a painstaking restoration of the car. "Over four or five years, my son restored it for me. It took him a while," Mr Wilson said. When finished, the car was a gleaming example of early motoring, and since then Mr Wilson and wife Judith have participated in many vintage car rallies. "It’s not a museum piece, it is to use," he said. Mr Wilson recently turned 80 and he is now sharing the car’s legacy with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. "The great-grandkids, are only 5 and 6 now, they play in it, they get in and they love it, they sit in there. "Mind you, I disconnect the battery, though."

At the moment, the Morris 8 is without its motor, which has been sent away for repairs, but he is looking forward to taking it out for a spin once reassembled. As the engine is only 918cc, he tends to avoid motorways. "The lawnmower’s got more power, but you know, you tootle along." "If I take it out now, it’ll be down the Peninsula Road or Aramoana or Outram you know, little light runs."

The Days Programme

1. The Rally will start from Russell Park in Waipukurau. Arrival time is from 10.45am, briefing will be at 11.00am and first car away approx 11.15am.

1st place Trophy 2nd and 3rd placings and prizes will only be for the Vintage Car section. This means cars built between 1st January 1919 up until 31st December 1931. A separate prize will be presented for Non Vintage entries.

It is anticipated the BBQ and prize giving will be finished by 6.00pm.

Sixth Annual Mid-Week Run “Taranaki Tour”

14th to 18th October 2024

Organisers: Rod and Scarlett McKenzie

Scarlett and Rod McKenzie are back from checking out the lie of the land in Taranaki and planning for this year’s tour and adventure, the sixth similar adventure for the branch. Quite a lot of the travelling entrants will be on the Highways and roads of Taranaki. The bush-covered roads up the mountain are narrow and sealed but worth the trip for the views. And like the rest of the roads around the country you will discover many more potholes and some of them are big!

You should plan to leave CHB by 8:00am on the morning of Monday 14th October travelling over the “Saddle Road” to meet all the other entrants at the “Church Café” on S/H1 in Sanson where we will have morning tea/coffee and your instruction sheets will be distributed.

“Entry Forms” for this trip will be available at the meal night meeting on Wednesday 17th July, or we can email them to you if you want when they are produced.

The motels where we will be staying in Hawera and New Plymouth will be shown on the entry form. However, the motels we have chosen for our Taranaki adventure are:

Hawera, Kerry Lane Motel on Kerry Lane which is about 3km from Hawera on the New Plymouth side of town phone 06 278 1918 for the night of 14th October.

New Plymouth, Pukekura Motor Lodge at 141 Coronation Avenue phone 06 759 4210 for the nights of 15th , 16th and 17th October.

Please phone to make your reservation at each motel and tell them that you are joining our CHB VCC tour to Taranaki.

Note: We will not be going to overnight at Kawhia as we first thought as the facilities there are not large enough to handle us all, they are very expensive and meals may have been an issue.

Be prepared to travel around 1200km and spend some money on fuel, motels and meals!

History of the Cruise Control

Ralph Rowe Teetor was born on August 17, 1890, in Hagerstown, Indiana On August 22, 1950, Ralph Teetor received his patent for speed control in motor vehicles.

Despite losing his sight at five years old and as a grown man he preferred never to discuss his disability.

Teetor developed an early knack for machinery and earned a mechanical engineering degree in 1912. When Teetor was appointed president of his family s auto parts business, Perfect Circle, in 1946, vehicles were becoming fast enough that Teetor began focusing on automobile safety.

Teetor’s work resulted in the “Speedostat,” which allowed the driver to select a speed. Once the speed was achieved, a piston would push back against the gas pedal. Speed control was a luxurious amenity at first, but it became widespread after being recognized as an effective means of fuel conservation after the 1970s oil embargo.

In the photo below Teetor (right) is pictured with Perfect Circle President, William Prossner, looking at a cruise control unit in 1957. (photo courtesy of The Automotive Hall of Fame)

Run To Porangahau—writtenbyVivHarris

It was an overcast day for our Club run to Porangahau, twenty of us turned up with cars ranging from Model A’s to a Porsche, drivers and navigators willing and ready for a good days outing.

Rods brief was to tell us it would be timed run and we were to look for signs on the left hand side of the road. There were spaces for 5 signs on our instruction sheet.

We headed off out via Hautuma Road, which it turns out was where one of the signs was hidden, onwards to Flemington via Ngahape Road, past the Wallingford Polo Grounds then onto Ugly Hill Road and Wallingford Road one of which was very muddy gravel before getting back onto tar-seal and a left turn onto Blackhead road where I found my first sign FROD.

A scenic drive through the country and back down to Porangahau where we handed in our instruction sheets to Rod. Then on to the Duke Hotel for some refreshments and lunch.

It was a most enjoyable run, lovely scenery and it was great to catch up with fellow club members.

Many thanks to Rod and Scarlett for organising the run.

CHB Branch of the VCC—Chairman’s Report—September 2024

Spring is about to burst open, hopefully. It has been a long wet winter this year.

Our big event for August was the National Daffodil Rally for Cancer. Kaye and her team put together an interesting day starting with a car Show and Shine at Russell Park in Waipukurau. Motor Bikes and an Ocean Going Boat were on display this year along with Classic and Vintage cars. A great turnout once again for the Cancer Society. Weather wise the day was PERFECT. Available on site we had the Rotary with a sausage sizzle, Coffee with KIMI, and the Waffle Man with tasty treats.

We had two Peoples Choice winners this year. Mark Boderick’s with his three motor bikes and Ross Oliver with his immaculate American Cadillac.

From Russell Park in Waipukarau, we headed out into the country ending up in Onga Onga to the Historical Village, a lot of work has gone into creating this Village, well worth a look around.

Then down to the Coles Factory, and once again a lot of restoration work has gone on here too with the machinery working. Then onto the Onga Onga Town Hall for a yummy afternoon tea provided by the Cancer Society Ladies. Thank you for this it finished off the day nicely.

Look out for the coming events: Father’s Day Sunday 1st September Daylight saving starts on the 29th September

There will be a change to the meeting night in October due to Rod and Scarlett's run. Keep an eye out for this change, we will give you plenty of notice. A good meeting August and Barrie Smales won the raffle drawn by Brice Poole.

Have a great start to Spring and happy motoring

Sunday 25th August 2024—CHB Branch Daffodil Rally for Cancer—by Michael and Vicky Harding photos from Janet and Gary Weaver Garry and Kaye Carswell

The weather was great for the Daffodil Rally for Cancer. A big sigh of relief for Kaye Carswell and her big team of helpers who organised and co-ordinated this event. Around seventy cars, motor bikes and a boat arrived at Russel park, Waipukarau for the vehicle Show and Shine display. There was a great turnout of people and the support from local business was amazing.

We had two Peoples Choice winners this year. Mark Boderick’s with his three motor bikes and Ross Oliver with his immaculate American Cadillac.

At 1.00pm the Rally began and the cars left the park to travel to a secret place of interest. The rally ended at Onga Onga, there we had a look around the historic village buildings which has been restored by local volunteers. Coles Bros, Builders building has also been restored along with some of the original machinery.

Then it was on to the Onga Onga Town Hall where afternoon tea was supplied and served by the Cancer Society helpers. Excellent food to end the event.

Many thanks to Kaye and her team for organising this memorable day.
