My adventures with old cars—byBrucePoole
In the meantime the first International Rally outside Europe was being organised and I had entered the Model A. This rally started and finished in Christchurch and went around the Lower South Island, Mt Cook, Twisel, Queenstown, Wanaka, Invercargill, Haast Pass Dunedin and backup the coast. A total of 300 vehicles with some entries form overseas.
Before the 1965 Rally several cars had been restored in the shed a 300 Ruahine St. Brian Rankins 1926 Stutz, Bill Bennetts 1925 Daimler. I had the Ford painted and upholstered in Palmerston North. By this time the Branch moved out to the Manawatu Car Club rooms at Fordy Farlands farm in Rangitikei Line near the store and dairy factory. It had been an old barn and the top had been converted into club rooms. This venue was soon outgrown and a move was made to the Aero Club rooms at Milson Aerodrome. About this time advice was received that a big rally was planned to go from Sydney to Melbourne, and then a extra run to Adelaide. It was all stops out and with the help of Graeme Ax, Norm Moore, Cliff Ax (motor machinist) John Hastilow Harvey Kerr, Trevor Alvie (18 year old panel beater) Don Heynes (painter) the car was ready to be driven to Wellington to be put on a roll on roll off boat to Sydney. This was after a cruise via Waipukurau, Napier, Taupo and back to Palmerston North. A whole boat load of cars left Wellington for Sydney.
It was while I was in Australia for two year that the present club rooms were built with all volunteer labour. Over the twelve years from 1962 to 1974 when I got married to Donna and moved to New Plymouth in September 1974, and then in March 1975 to Waipukurau. I have enjoyed the company of lots of early members who looked after me and now most of these have all passed on. Ken Townsend, Dave Barker, Brian Wycherly, Don Haynes, Graeme Ax, Norm Moore, Eddie Holmwood, Tink West, Ron Blanchett, Lachlan Scott, Rob Knight, Les Fitzgerald, Danny Biggans, Harvey and Roy Kerr, Gavin Reid, Murray Martin, Alan Looser, Morrie Holland, John Hogg, Fred Glover, Bill Olsen, Stan Turner, Gerald and Helen Weekes, Phi Hereford, Mort Andrews, Phil Andrews.
I arrived in Waipukurau in March 1975 to open a branch of Keith Hay Homes. I stayed at the Tuki Tuki Motel for a week prior to the new house being ready and the new yard. I had driven the 1930 Chrysler over from New Plymouth and had parked it outside the motel. Rod McKenzie spotted the car and knocked on my door and welcomed me to Waipukurau. From then until the CHB Branch was formed we spent many enjoyable times in the Hawkes Bay Branch participating in the At Deco and Safari weekends etc. Approx six year ago I purchased a 1965 Series V Hillman Minx (local Waipukurau car) and my granddaughter Mya learned to drive this. She has taken part in a few rallies in this car since gaining her drivers licence.
A founding member, and I have been Club Chairman twice and Club Captain since the formation of our CHB Branch. The CHB Branch began with approx 20members and has grown to approx 120 during this time.

Club Captain’s Report
The branch motoring year started in June with a run arranged by Lynn and Sandra Cross to see the collection of Craig Hickmott’s at Haumoana. This was well supported by members mostly attending in club eligible vehicles. The 1935 Auburn Phaeton that the Cross’s once owned was a highlight to see. In July the branch headed to Dannevirke to inspect three sheds most of us hadn’t seen before in a run organised by Wayne McDonagh who has many connections in the Dannevirke area.
August was a bit of a dud month due to “Covid” and although the plans were in place for the VCC National Daffodil Rally to be held we all stayed home. Again September was a wash-out too due to “Covid” with several plans fouled up for a car show and other things, but a few made it to Pourerere for a picnic. Our trio of entrants to the Targa Rally had to put their plans on hold until May of 2022 .In October the mid- week run to Whanganui and Ohakune was very successful and enjoyed by about 15 entrants. In November the “Car Show” at the Waipukurau Club went ahead. Bruce Poole along with Neil and Pat Malcolm organised the Annual Veteran Rally around CHB which attracted several 100 years old plus vehicles with a drive out to Takapau School for lunch put on by the locals. The next day a trip to some interesting homes had us high on the hills surveying CHB from a great height whilst we had our picnic sandwiches. The Christmas Party at Tamumu was fun with a gymkana arranged by Seton and Judy Thomsen followed by a meal and a lot of chat, except for the rain which stifled the overnighters in their campers.
In the New Year some went to the Annual Taihape Rally. Bruce Turner kicked off the Thursday morning “Torque-head” coffee and scone group which has become quite a popular weekly excursion. Some other branches are now doing something similar in their patches. Several members made it to New Plymouth for the VERO Rally, but upon their return the country was again placed into lockdown for some weeks. However, Iain and Eva Gollan eventually did get us out to Whangaehu beach, and to see the Stoddart’s Bentonite mine on Cook’s Tooth Rd. It really wasn’t until April with the Twilight Rally organised by Bruce and Ken that any “normalisation” of our events came to pass. Several entrants came from neighbouring branches for this popular night out. Speaking of a night out, the branch were able to attend the “Little Theatre” last month for a little bit of culture with the viewing of the play “The Old People are Revolting”. It was quite a laugh, starting when our Chairman made his entrance to begin the meeting from the wings and received a huge round of applause until all recognised he was not the “revolting” one. The meal was “Take-aways” which gave Eva, who organises the monthly meeting meals so well, a bit of a break.
I have enjoyed my time as “Club Captain” for the branch for the last eight years and I wish my successor all the best in the position. I must say that I couldn’t have done the job without the help from Scarlett’s input and second opinion and I thank her for this. The job is made that much easier when you get volunteers coming along with an idea or a run to do or a place to go. So I say to you all, give this person your support by coming up with some ideas for things to do and see. The branch is in good heart and I know members are getting lots of pleasure from using and maintaining their 30 plus years old vehicles, and being members of a local club of friendly vintage vehicle owners.
What of the future? This is anybody’s guess in these uncertain and becoming more expensive times in which we live. How about some of you oldies invite your kids or grandchildren to come on a run in your elderly vehicle? Better still, organise a simple run around CHB they can handle with ease. Encourage them, because sooner or later you are going to fall off your perch and you won’t be taking the old car with you when you go. I feel certain you’d like to see it appreciated by your family if we are still allowed to drive the things.
Moved: Rod McKenzie Sec: Graham Cheer Carried Editor’s Report
2021 2022 has been another very successful year for the CHB branch considering the disruption the Covid virus has caused. It has been very hard work for those members who have spent many hours organizing events and rallies only to find all that work has had to be cancelled. However, the runs and events we were able to attend have been varied in interesting. Some places visited are on private property and the member’s knowing about them have made the necessary inquires and permission for us to visit. The owners of these properties are very proud to share the history right through to the present day.
It is great to receive photo’s reports and other articles of runs and events members have sent through for publication in the Bleat, as I have been unable to attend as many runs and events as I would have wished to. The Bleat is published nationally and I would like to thank all those club members and our very hard working committee for their contributions to the success of the CHB Branch of VCC club and to the success of the Bleat.
I am prepared to be your Editor for another year and hope the contributions keep coming in every month; as it does make my job a lot easier.

Secretary’s Report.
Although we’re not out of the woods yet, the 2021 - 2022 year was a slightly less challenging year than the previous one with Covid restrictions being lifted somewhat.
However many of our club activities have not been affected and it has been a reasonably busy year with most of our monthly club nights and organised runs giving us plenty of opportunity to stay in touch. A new innovation was the Thursday “Coffee & Scones” mornings held at various cafes around the district.
Our membership has remained fairly static (118) with several new members joining, and the untimely deaths and retirement of others.
An essential part of keeping the wider membership aware and in touch with what is happening is communication. Joyce has done a great job with “The Bleat”, but can only do it with contributions, reports and photos of events coming in from members.
National Office has set up a new email server which is overloaded with irrelevant and non VCC emails which I have to filter. I only pass on what relates to our branch. For my part I have tried to keep these emails down to a minimum with relevant information (and the odd “smile”).
As your secretary for the past year I have enjoyed being able to assist with activities – membership, club night info and entry forms etc. If re-elected I will endeavour to continue to do so.
I have enjoyed my time serving the Club as Secretary alongside your elected committee - a team that has worked well together.

1935 Avro Anson Mk1 MH-120. The Anson is a British twin-engine multirole aircraft. During World War two the aircraft undertook coastal reconnaissance work searching for German submarines and U-boats across the English Channel and the Irish Sea, and escorting shipping convoys as they came into port. Despite its noise it handled well and was fondly nicknamed Gentle Annie. Bill Reid of Wakefield near Nelson sourced his Anson from and Australian aviation museum. After a 10 year restoration the aircraft is back flying, when not flying, it is on display at OMAKA AVIATION HERITAGE CENTRE.
SOLE SURVIVOR FOR SALE! This stunning early WW-II bomber is the sole airworthy survivor of the very distinctive Avro Anson Mk1 MH-120 an aircraft of massive significance to the British Commonwealth at the beginning of World War Two.

Sunday May 21st 2023— Club run to—Tokomaru Steam Museum
Story by Ella Domper
The weather looked shocking that day and we nearly decided not to go. But the rally was still on and the sun eventually came out, so we jumped in the car. A lot of beautiful rainbows and lots of rain underway.
The Tokomaru Steam Museum from 1970 has been closed for some years until new owners Damien and Roxanne opened it up just four years ago, by appointment only. They are the guardians of all these treasure's that have been left behind by the previous owners.
They are bumping into lots of red tape rules and big cost to maintain all the machines. We found it was very organised but the machines were not going. First priority is to get the boiler going and checking all the steam lines before they can even think of starting the machines up. A Beautiful collection of small and big steam engines and the steam train.
We all enjoyed our lunch, sitting on the train seats between the machinery. There was also a display by Helen Pratt, a miniature village that took her 30 years to build. Including the drapery in Norsewood.
We carried on to Longburn to visit an amazing place from John and Judy Callesen.
We went to his grain processor that dries all the grain, he has 53 silos on the farm. He builds and maintains all the equipment. His hobbies are restoring Vintage and Veteran cars, with great skills. He is currently working on a rare Newton/Bennet. All the wood-work will be re-done in macrocarpa from a template for rebuilding it in beech-wood. Perfectly till the mm perfection. Very impressive, the photos tell the story.
Many thanks go to John Foot for organising this amazing visit to the other side of the hills.
We were pleased we went.

Tubeless Tyres
On May 11, 1947, B.F. Goodrich Tires of Akron, Ohio, announces the development of a tubeless tire, an innovation that would make automobiles safer and more efficient.
The result of more than three years of engineering, Goodrich’s tubeless tyres basically eliminated the inner tube, trapping pressurized air within the tyre walls themselves. By reinforcing the tyre walls, Goodrich claimed, they were able to combine the puncture-sealing features of inner tubes with an improved ease of riding, high resistance to bruising and superior retention of air pressure.
While Goodrich awaited approval from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, they put their tubeless tyres through highspeed road testing and put them in service on a fleet of taxis, Ohio state police cars and a number of privately owned passenger cars.
After successful testing, Goodrich won patents for the tyre’s various features in 1952. Within three years, the tubeless tyre was standard equipment on most new automobiles.
MID WEEK RUN 10th 11th 12th OCTOBER 2023—withRodandScarlett
Once again, Rod and Scarlett McKenzie are arranging a mid-week tour/run for mid-October. If you are coming along, you will need to arrange to stay two nights at the “Raceway Court Motel” which is at 20 Awahuri Road, on the outskirts of Feilding, being the nights of Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th October.
As this motel is very popular with truckies to stay, you are strongly advised to make your booking as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. We have spoken to the manager [Paul} who is aware we are coming as a group.
There is a restaurant on site which we will quite probably utilise one night. Scarlett and Rod will be heading across to the Manawatu to do some reconnaissance work in the next couple of months to check out some places of interest.
At this early stage, entrants will likely meet up in Woodville for morning tea/coffee on the morning of 10th October before heading across the “Saddle Road” to Ashurst. On Thursday 12th, the final day, we will have a picnic lunch [BYO] at a pretty garden where you can wander about and admire the plants, the homestead and other interesting things before heading back to CHB. There will probably be some costs involved at places we stop at, so expect to pay some fees so bring cash for that.
It would assist in the planning if you would advise us that you will be coming along as some places need numbers of people arriving on their doorstep. Email:
