Dorothy Levitt—Lady Driver—Fastest Girl on Earth

Dorothy Levitt, born Elizabeth Levi in 1882, was a women pioneer racing motorist, yacht racer who broke the water speed record and on two occasions the land speed record. In 1909 she also became an aviator. Dorothy Levitt was a British racing driver and journalist. She was the first British woman racing driver, holder of the world's first water speed record, the women's world land speed record holder, and an author. She was a pioneer of female independence and female motoring and taught Queen Alexandra and the Royal Princesses how to drive. In 1905, she established the record for the longest drive achieved by a lady driver by driving a De DionBouton from London to Liverpool and back over two days, receiving the soubriquets in the press of the Fastest Girl on Earth, and the Champion Lady Motorist of the World.

In 1903

Dorothy Levitt was a 21 year old secretary at Napier and Son, manufacturers of Napier automobiles in London, England. Australian entrepreneur Selwyn Edge, who raced and sold Napier's, reportedly handpicked Dorothy to represent his brand on the racetrack for the publicity. She was described as having "long legs and eyes like pools" so it was no wonder she caught Edge's eye! Dorothy Levitt had never even driven an automobile at the time but she was a keen and fast learner.

Before the year was over she had beaten all of the cars in her class at the races at Southport, England.

Dorothy Levitt—Lady Driver—Fastest Girl on Earth

The following year she competed in the Hereford 1,000 mile marathon. She returned to Southport again in 1904 and won 2 medals. She entered a variety of speed and distance events over the next few years. She set and broke her own women's world speed record ultimately reaching her fastest mark of 96 miles per hour. When Great Britain's first track for auto racing, Brooklands opened in 1907, officials refused to allow women to compete against men there.

There was a fear that an accident involving a woman would suffer severe censure upon the committee for allowing a woman to take part. Automobile racing was evolving from a somewhat genteel amateur sport to a more cut throat professional one. Professional racers had a financial stake in the ban. Some male drivers considered that losing to a woman would deal a blow not only to their egos, but also to their wallets. Women were only welcome at exhibits and speed trials, where they raced against the clock rather than other people. By the time Brooklands had decided to stage a women-only "Ladies' Bracelet Handicap" in 1908, Dorothy had moved on, concentrating on hill climbs and long-distance races in Europe. She was also writing a book about driving for women.

The Woman and the Car was published in 1909 along with other useful information, she advised women drivers to “keep a little mirror handy to occasionally hold up to view what is behind you." This was one of the first introductions to the concept of the rearview mirror. Dorothy certainly earned her title "The Fastest Girl on Earth".

—The Drowning Girls Waipukurau Little Theatre’s latest production

The Little Theatre has offered CHBVCC a Charity Night on Wednesday 13th March. All that we need to do is sell 50 tickets at $30 00 each to members, friends and interested people. The play is “The Drowning Girls” and is the story of one of the First Serial Killers in Great Britian to be convicted. The format is, we meet at 6.00pm for takeaway food. The Bar will be open and to be seated by 7.15pm to enjoy the show start time at 7.30pm. The club stands to make $750 by selling ALL the tickets, so come along and enjoy the show with good friends.

Losing one wife to drowning in the bath tub is tragic. But losing three? That becomes the story behind the Waipukurau Little Theatre’s latest production, The Drowning Girls, written by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson and Daniela Vlaskalic, an award-winning play with acclaimed productions around the world since its premiere in 2008. The play explores the true story of Bessie Mundy, Alice Burnham and Margaret Lofty. All three were murdered between 1912 and 1914 by the same man, bigamist and serial killer George Joseph Smith. Smith swept the women off their feet, marrying them and convincing them to turn all their worldly possessions over to him and then murdering them in the bathtub The play is described as “morbidly funny”, as the three brides surface from the bathtubs they were drowned in and relive the events leading up to their deaths. When Smith was caught and prosecuted, the case became known as the Brides in the Bath Murders. As well as being widely reported in the media, it was significant in the history of forensic pathology and detection.

THE HISTORY OF FIRESTONE TIRES

On February 7th 1938, Harvey Samuel Firestone, founder of the American tyre company that bore his name, died at 69 in Miami Beach, Florida.

In 1911, the winner of the inaugural Indianapolis 500 auto race, Ray Harroun, drove a Marmon Wasp equipped with Firestone Tyres. Fifteen years later, Firestone was manufacturing more than 10 million tyres each year, about a quarter of U.S. total tyre output.

Harvey Firestone retired in 1932. In 1988, the Firestone company was acquired by Japan-based Bridgestone Tyres, a leading global manufacturer founded in 1931.

You could say Harvey Firestone reinvented the wheel. Because when he started the Firestone Tire Company, he changed the way we drive. Behind everything he did was a commitment to being ahead of the curve from the invention of non-skid tread to a racing legacy that’s second to none. Today his pioneering spirit can still be found within our company’s strong culture of innovation.

Sunday 11th February—Gymkhana held at Elsthorpe Sports Ground

A fun day was held at the Elsthorpe Sports ground. A big thank you to Judy, Seaton and Iain.

The weather wasn’t the best when we left Dannevirke (showery) and cold and wasn’t a lot better in Waipukurau. We continued out to Elsthorpe with the weather improving the closer we got. It was cold and most people had the correct gear for the weather. (Some of us didn’t)?

12 vehicles lined up to take part in the gymkhana starting off with the speed course. Lyn gave Sandra a thrill when he spun out.

Then we had a measured gap to drive through and to see how good the lock on your cars was. Some were pretty impressive and a lot were not.

Then 10 revolutions of the tyres (that is further than you think when you are driving.

After lunch we had to drive a set course, blind folded. Rod running into the final cone as Scarlet was in fits of laughter and couldn’t talk to guide him.

The final excitement for the day was the dart throwing competition which was done while you were driving out of the car window and you had to try and hit the board. We found out who all the “tossers” were. I think Gary Carswell may have ended up the chief tosser.

15th 18th February 2024

Wheels with attitude—Held at the Dannevirke Show Grounds—January 2024

A very hot but cloudy day, the sort of day you can get very burnt, if you leave your hat at home. It was well worth the trip through from Hastings to see the amazing collection of classic cars, trucks tractors, motor-bikes of varying degree’s of restoration, and to catch up with friends. There were a couple of cars made up of bits and bobs from anything that would do the job, they arrived on a trailer. Some very smart full restoration cars on display, a credit to the owners.

There were all sorts of swap meet stalls to brows through. I found a very handy Austin 8 Manual, had a few pages missing but still good to have as it is different to the one I have. Not as many food, coffee stalls operating this time. This event has had a few years of disruption and nice to see it up

Buster Keaton’s—“The General”

A few of the local CHB VCC members attended the showing of the silent movie “The General” at the CHB Municipal Theatre in Waipawa on the evening of Sunday 18th February. This was promoted by our “Bleat” advertiser Angela Annear, and was an item recognised as a contribution to the “Art Deco” weekend.

It was a story about a train driver played by Buster Keaton during the American Civil War who couldn’t be enrolled as a soldier because he was more useful as a train driving engineer. The whole of the film, which was about an hour and a half long, was accompanied by an Internationally recognised pianist called Chris Hainsworth who is normally based in France. He accompanied the playing of the whole of the film using well known American tunes from the late 19th century. He is a very clever pianist and the tunes fitted the acts as they came to pass as would have been the case in movie theatres during the mid-1920’s when this film was produced. It was one of the last silent movies before “Talkies” came out.

“The General” was the name of the engine he drove and became something of the hero of the story with a train chase. These days it would have been a car chase I guess. And, of course, there was a young lady that Buster was desiring to be involved with which made the story a plausible yarn.

This was a fun night out and thanks must go to Angela for promoting this silent film which was enjoyed by the hundred or so patrons.

Restoration

Our workshop is set up with repair processes for each type of worn or damaged component. The carburettor is stripped right down to the body, each piece is examined for wear, corrosion and, in the case of calibrated parts, tested for compliance with the original specifications and replaced where necessary with new parts. All the components are put through our cleaning procedure, separated into related groups for processing, restored to original finish and reassembled to bring the carburettor back to as near to original condition as is feasible. There are many variables so there is no set price for a restoration.

All jobs are individually priced before we start the process so we do need to see the carburettor before giving you an estimate. Usually there is no charge for assessing your carburettor except for any freight involved.

I can very much recommend this company, Weber Specialty. After years of carburettor instability with my 1974 Triumph Spitfire twin carburettors, my son in-law took it into Weber specialty where the twin carburettors were over hauled and refitted. The difference is amazing, she starts easily now and is running very sweetly. Joyce Calder, Bleat Editor.
