CHB Branch of the Vintage Car Club—raises record funds for Cancer Society on Daffodil Day Written by Rachel Wise

CHB Vintage Car Club Daffodil Committee members: from left, Kaye Carswell, Eva Gollan and Janet Weaver with club president Gary Weaver and CHB Cancer Society officials Claire Glennings and Jenny Schaw, with the $8,800 cheque.

This year’s Central Hawke’s Bay Vintage Car Club Daffodil Day for Cancer broke all the records, bringing in $8,800 to be used by the CHB Cancer Society for the local community. It was also a success on a National Level. All NZ’s vintage car clubs hold their Daffodil Day rally at the same time and this year CHB Branch one of the smallest clubs raised one of the top amounts, attracting “congratulations” from the National Organisation. This year’s Daffodil Day was held at Oruawharo Homestead, hosted by Will Lauder and Bianca du Toit. The space available at the historic venue allowed for a Show and Shine of the vintage cars, Devonshire teas, Spin the Wheel, auctions and raffles. Car enthusiasts came from Dannevirke, Napier and Hastings despite challenging weather conditions and the venue was so popular, organisers haven’t ruled out a revisit next year. Organiser Kaye Carswell says: “We would like to thank all that attended and supported this great cause. And to all our sponsors, thanks you again. It was an incredibly successful day and we were very proud to present a $8,800 cheque to the CHB Cancer Society.

Norsewood Celebrated 150 years—written by Heather Cheer Vintage car club was invited to display cars at Norsewood's 150th celebrations. Nine cars were much admired by folk coming into the village on the Saturday. The owners enjoyed a Devonshire tea in the barn, where antiques were able to be appraised by local dealers. The school had a marque full of history of passed pupils and teachers and lent items of local interest. At the museum I was a working to display my spinning wheel and dressed in Scandinavian outfit. Was great to chat to people who had come to meet up with distant family members. One lady organised to met a relative for the first time at the museum, a very special moment. The War Memorial Hall had a fantastic display of Jane Brinkley's art put together by 2 sisters, who are descendants, who shared precious paintings and carvings from their private collections. Mathews Park was the venue for entertainment ,food trucks and market stalls. Another great weekend in Norsewood.

CHB VCC 1st Vintage Rally 2023—written by Heather Cheer Saturday 23rd September seventeen cars met at Russel Park sports ground in Waipukarau for the rally briefing from organisers Bruce Poole and Ken Lyons. Several cars coming from the Manawatu Vintage Club. We were given our rally instructions at the gate and left at one minute intervals, heading south east towards Takapau, ending up at Jason and Jo Ward's property. We had the choice of driving through the farm or going direct to the house for the lunch stop. Most cars went along the farm track which was pleasantly planted with trees and shrubs for the bees to harvest for their Kintail Honey business. The damage from Cyclone Gabrielle was very noticeable along the river banks. The ex deer shed was offered to us for a dry picnic spot. Light drizzle fell as we roamed over a hillside to pick daffodils to take home, which Scarlet McKenzie's father had planted many years ago on the old family farm. Then our competitive part of the day began. The clock was set and we were off at intervals for a timed run, heading to the hills from Highway 50. We passed the Bibby Church and climbed along a ridge line with amazing views down into the valleys on each side. Driving the Wakarara road turning into Waipawa town and headed south to the Waipukurau Club for prize giving and a BBQ tea. A big thank you to Bruce and Ken for an enjoyable run.

Chairman's Report—November—2023 Fair to say some of us are catching our breathe after the fantastic CHB Daffodil fund-raising Rally for Cancer. On the 20th September we had a combined meeting with the Manawatu Branch a the Dannevirke Services and Citizens club, well attended by both clubs. Laurie and Gloria Malcomson organized a quiz night. Keith Hopping made a Trophy for the event called. “The Piston Broke Trophy” A fabulous looking trophy, this year it was won by the Manawatu branch, “Congratulations” On Saturday the 23rd September Bruce Poole and Ken Lyons had their CHB VCC 1st Vintage Rally, the results will be posted in a report. Members are still taking about the 10 pin bowling event held in Hastings. “Congratulations” to Maureen James the recipient of a CHB Community Services award for services to sport Tennis & Squash. Well I have finally retired from being an electrician, this happened on Friday 22 nd of September, 58 years of sparky working in CHB and with the last 43 years operating Weaver’s Electrical. Time to work for Janet now. By the time you read this report Janet and I will be in America on a tour and visiting family and a tour of the Shelby Mustang Factory in Los Vegas Nevada, a highlight for me. NO Thursday morning coffee and scones for a few weeks, I’m sure I’ll cope with this. Interesting event coming up in October with Rod and Scarlett’s Manawatu adventure. So members get out and support the events that others organise, a lot of work goes into putting these events together.

Club Captains Report—Laurie's Lot—November—2023 There has been a good spell of weather lately, which would have been great for all those involved in Labour

Weekend Rallies. Bruce's and Kens Vintage Run was very successful and held on Saturday 23rd September. There was a mix of vehicles from vintage to modern taking part. There were three branches represented, Wairarapa, Manawatu and Central Hawkes Bay. Winners of the non vintage section were the Reid's from Manawatu. The winner of the vintage section and holders of the trophy for the next three months were Rod and Scarlett McKenzie. Rod and Scarlett's three day Manawatu Adventure was great with about 45 people taking part. Some very interesting sheds and gardens were visited and some knowledgeable people spoke to us. One person who the men were very taken with was Vern Jensen who demonstrated how to make the spokes for wooden wheels. I think we could have stayed there all day, and I think he would have talked and demonstrated all day as well. But his wife finally convinced him that we had other places to go.

The CHB Veteran Rally is being held on Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th and on Sunday 5th, the branch is invited to join the Veterans at Lemmon's Museum and at Tony's place. Directions on how to get there are in the Bleat. Sunday 26th November there will be a Kryptic Kruise in and around Waipukurau and Waipawa, BYO lunch at a scenic farm. If wet there is cover at the farm. Those taking part please meet in Tavistock Place at 10.30am. Our Christmas Party is on at Oruawharo on Saturday 9th December. Till next time, stay safe

CHB Branch Mid-week tour to Manawatu / Fielding District Organised by Rod and Scarlett McKenzie

DAY 1, Tuesday 10th October 2023—written by Kaye Carswell: We headed off from Waipukarau to travel through to Woodville where we met the travelling group for Coffee, tea and a bite to eat. Roll call done and or instructions/bible given out. We headed off about 11.30am you and over the saddle road in very windy conditions through Ashurst and headed for the hills, very scenic trip through the country side, A quick stop at Apiti to stretch our legs and nature calls. Then off again heading to Kimbolton for lunch at the Clements. Amazing views along the way and found the train or should I say carriages going to nowhere, I believe it was called the Gatwick Express, originally from Australia, they are now boutique accommodation. After lunch Glen spoke about their recent trip overseas especially there time spent on the Isle of man. The girls enjoyed looking at Cath’s brooch collection and the boys went out to his shed to look at the latest purchase, plans to put a water tanker on the back I believe. Cross Hill gardens were next, upon paying for our visit and listening to Scott chat to us, there was a sudden noise of an alarm, Keiths new Cadillac!! Of course lots of useless advice given allround but Keith got it sorted. TOOT TOOT a mini car type train took those unable to walk for a guided tour. The rest of us wondered through the gardens, there were amazing Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Camellias and big old trees. Unfortunately we were a little early to see them in full bloom, a cuppa on offer for a small fee after our walk. The next stop was at the Black Barn owned by Steve and Kirsty Ward, just out of Ashurst, wow what an amazing place, I think Rod may have been envious of all the number plates, an incredible collection and purpose built barn and two adorable Dalmatians. Steve Spoke briefly about his collection and their vision. Love it if Gary would built me a purpose built barn like that one. After an incredible day we headed for our motel for refreshments and dinner.

CHB Branch Mid-week tour to Manawatu / Fielding District Organised by Rod and Scarlett McKenzie

DAY 2, Wednesday 11th October 2023—written by Ken Lyons: After our pizza night and Carbo loading, Rod and Scarlett had a busy day organised for us all. Our first stop was a visit to Awahuri (the bend in the river ) Forest Kitchener Park. The Makino/Mangakino stream runs through the park. Its course changes due to flooding, however several small ponds and oxbow lakes provide enough moisture to sustain the forest. The forest is one of the few lowland podocarp swamp forests left in the Manawatu. A well constructed boardwalk allows visitors to easily walk the “loop” and enjoy the many native trees and birdlife. Most of us then made our way to the hilltop home and workshop of Vern and Suzanne Jensen. Vern is a well known wheel wright whose speciality is manufacturing wooden spoked wheels for vintage and veteran cars. After a lovely morning tea provided by Suzanne and a talk from Vern about their magnificent 5 level hilltop home we were then shown their Veteran Cars and then to the workshop where the ‘magic’ happens. Vern explained and demonstrated to us how the wooden spoke wheel is made. From preformed numbered spokes and rim Vern assembled a wheel and with a few raps of the hammer had it all fitting so tight that you would think it was all one piece of wood. Amazing!

CHB Branch Mid-week tour to Manawatu / Fielding District Organised by Rod and Scarlett McKenzie DAY 2, Continued—

Next stop was a visit to the “Coach House” Museum in Feilding. Here was a place containing so much history of the district that it is impossible in an hour or so to appreciate all that has been put on display here. The Museum operates with only one paid staff member and a huge number of enthusiastic volunteers to maintain the collection. The collection has all been used in and sourced from the Feilding district and so has special significance as local history. Most of the pioneering farm machinery, horse drawn carriages and 19th Century memorabilia gave us an insight to the tough existence and challenges those early European settlers must have faced after their arrival to the Manawatu. After our lunch in the Café area of the Coach House museum we made our way to the home of Terry and Jill Rush, Terrys collection of NZ Motor racing history is contained within his huge “shed”. He is a walking/ talking encyclopaedia of knowledge and his recall of facts and figures pertaining to NZ Motorsport is impressive. After an informative and interesting guided tour of the “shed’ by Terry we were served a very welcome afternoon tea by Jill. A separate page is included with more detailed information of the “Rush Collection”. We then made our way back to the Motel to relax and then get dressed in “green” for our evening out at Murrays Irish Bar. A great night of fun and laughter, great food, Guinness, Irish Red, and a guest appearance of the Irish Rovers ?? They kindly agreed to waive their fee and even paid for their own meals. I am sure we will book them again some other time!! if we can secure a good deal with their manager again. Some of the “stand up” comedians may also be invited back as special guests! A good night was had by all and we all had to leave and go home to rest and be ready for Day 3. The Bar staff had decided also that we should move on and I believe the Guinness was no longer available.

CHB Branch Mid-week tour to Manawatu / Fielding District Organised by Rod and Scarlett McKenzie

DAY 3, Thursday 12th October 2023—written by Ella Domper: After a great night of food, entertainment and fellowship on Wednesday evening at the Irish Bar, we all are bright and shining early the next morning at 9.00am. Laurie thanked Rod and Scarlett for the awesome few days we had together and presented them with a card and said we all appreciated what they had put together for this adventure. On our way towards Rongatea we had some fun with the hiccups Rod already warned us about in the instructions. Off to Foxton we went with morning tea at the "Sweet Dreams Cafe" in the museum. Someone mentioned that it was very Dutch orientated. Good guess, it is all about the Dutch immigration and the history of Able Tasman. In the museum we found traditional Dutch costumes, bikes, treats, and games to try like sjoelen with the wooden discs. Some of us had a try. Then we visited the Dutch windmill, climbed up to the top and did some shopping. Yummy! the windmill biscuits, and gingerbread cake, cheese and licorice were the favourite for some. We drove to the Greenhaugh gardens just out of Palmerston North for lunch. Here we were welcomed in the “Giraffe room” by Lynne Atkins, the now owner of the property. The property includes a beautiful two story homestead built in 1874 with a beautiful garden. A framed photograph of Kenneth McKenzie, the first owner of the homestead, was shown to Lynne by Rod and his brother Peter. And yes, they are greatgrandsons of Kenneth. This was a very special moment to be part of. I think I speak on behalf of everybody, that we had a great time. Thanks to Rod and Scarlett, we can't wait until next year.

15 A very Special Moment in time for Rod, Scarlett and Peter McKenzie visiting the home their Great-grandfather built in 1874

Rush Collection Terry Rush is first and foremost a collector, and a NZ motor racing historian, but what we do know is that what he has behind the doors of his shed is pretty damn impressive. Thankfully we have the likes of Terry, who has collected, lived and breathed motor racing for a fair chunk of his life, to fill in the gaps and preserve the history, and for that we are eternally thankful. It was back in the 50s at Ohakea that the motor racing fire was lit for Terry, and he also has fond memories of watching Stirling Moss in 62 at Ardmore, in the pouring rain. He was a regular ‘flag flutterer’ (marshal) at Levin, where the likes of Moss, Jackie Stewart and Jim Clark would all make the effort of thanking each and every flag marshal after the race for keeping an eye on them, and waving the appropriate flag, thus averting any unnecessary on-track carnage. Beach racing Volkswagen and Formula Vs was what consumed Terry’s time in the early 70s before he took on what would have probably been his biggest and most important task in motor racing to date, Manfeild. He, along with many others, identified the need for a proper circuit in the Manawatu, and decided to do something about it. Terry’s son Tim is the youngest person to drive around the circuit. At age three Terry strapped Tim into a single seater (a Briggs and Stratton-powered go-kart), set the throttle and sent young Tim on his way. On the back straight of lap three the kart ran out of juice and Terry had to go and rescue him! It’s hard to say when the collecting started, but you have to remember that in the day there were no glossy New Zealand car magazines, so people had to rely on publications from our cousins across the ditch to get our fix of cars and motor racing. Terry has amassed quite a collection of these magazines, and still does to this day. A wall of them greets you as you walk through the door along with poster's, signed photos and drawings of cars, all of which gives you an inkling as to what lies behind that innocuous-looking wooden door over in the corner. Once through the door it’s pretty obvious that this is truly a very, very special shed. All laid out in front of you are some fairly important race cars in New Zealand single-seater history. The very first car Bruce McLaren ever drove, a Cooper 500, is the first on you encounter. Sitting next to it is a 1962 Brabham BT4, driven to victory in the 1963. Australian Grand Prix by Sir Jack from the back of the grid while powered by a borrowed engine courtesy of Bruce McLaren, because the original one had haemorrhaged. It made its way here in 1964 and Denny Hulme drove it for the new Tasman series, in which he won the first two international races at Levin and also set the fasted lap. Not to be outshone there’s the imposing, 2.2-metre wide, yes wide, GM 3/9 Can-Am car built in 1976 by Graham McRae. Underneath the handmade all-aluminium body is the 1978 Australian Grand Prix-winner GM3 chassis. When this was raced in Australia it was fitted with a distinctive clear Perspex cockpit cove and yes, that Perspex cover is here too, turn around and look up, there it is hanging on the wall. Terry even has Graham’s overalls that he wore when he raced the car to sixth in that race, how cool is that! Flanking the Cooper and the Brabham are a Lola T142 brought into the country by none other than Kenny Smith in 1997 and a Begg FM4, the only Formula 5000 to compete in five New Zealand Grand Prix's albeit with four different drivers, David Oxton being one of them. Aside from Tim removing all the pushrods from the 302 Chev engines in the race cars to save the valve springs, they all go. Not all of them are in race trim but they all can be fired up and driven if necessary. Terry’s collection of vehicles is not limited to race cars only as there are various other vehicles on display, and the collection can definitely be described as eclectic. In one corner is a Morgan plus 4 and way over in another corner is an old ford V8 truck, that was bought purely because he drove on his dad’s farm at the age of seven. Various conversation pieces are scattered throughout if you ever get sick of the cars. A flat-six Continental Aeroplane engine gifted to the collection lies on a pallet next to a 24-plug V12 engine out of a fire engine sitting on a stand. Terry points to the other side of the shed, “there’s the fire engine it’s out of”. You just smile and shake your head, “of course it is”. Once you have meandered through all the cars and peered in all the glass cabinets containing model cars and trains then looked at the brass burner, taps, cameras, brands and fishing rods, another innocuous—looking door beckons. Sitting in this room is Terry’s 1972 McLaren M22 Formula 5000 which raced at Rod Millen’s Leadfoot Festival at Hahei. This McLaren is the very last McLaren customer car to have been built. Never would you see such an array of cars with such historical significance under one roof, outside a museum. It really is a special collection and one which, if you have an ounce of petrol coursing 16 through your veins, this should be on your bucket list.

New Zealand motorcycling community mourns loss of legend —Tim Gibbes — by Andy McGechan

Manawatu man Tim Gibbes, a firebrand, a pioneer, a legend and an inspirational champion of all things motorcycling. The New Zealand motorcycling community is mourning the death of one of its greatest legends, Manawatū man Tim Gibbes.

And while modesty meant the Kiwi motorcycling icon had always refused to accept the “legend” moniker, virtually all the tributes that have flowed since he died on Saturday night, just two days after he’d celebrated his 90th birthday, lovingly describe him in this way. Actually Australian born at Longueville, near Sydney, Gibbes married his Kiwi sweetheart Joan (Cleghorn) and they settled together in Manawatu and raised a family. Gibbes also ran a successful motorcycle dealership in Palmerston North. Gibbes contributed much to the New Zealand motorcycling community over the years and his efforts as an inspirational leader, advisor, event organiser, team manager and mentor cannot be understated. In his early 20s, Gibbes raced motocross and enduro world championship events in Europe, providing inspiration to many New Zealand and Australian riders who later followed on to also race in Grand Prix competitions overseas. When Hollywood came calling in 1962, Gibbes was on the spot in southern Germany to help out with stunt riding duties during filming of the World War II movie classic “The Great Escape”. The marathon 2hour and 48-minute movie included only about five minutes of motorcycle action, but what great action it was. Gibbes was hired as a stand-in for several of the thrilling action scenes, including some played by famous American actor Steve McQueen, as well as Hollywood A-list actors Donald Pleasance, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, James Donald, Charles Bronson and James Coburn. Gibbes also worked in England in the 1950s as a motorcycle tester and works rider on English-made Matchless, AJS, Greeves, DOT and Ariel bikes. Gibbes stopped competing aged 60 and was honoured with a John Britten innovation-and-service-to-the-industry award, a Motorsport NZ distinguished service award and in 2016 was inducted into the Motorcycling New Zealand Hall of Fame. 17

New Zealand motorcycling community mourns loss of legend —Tim Gibbes — by Andy McGechan

With wife Joan working tirelessly alongside him, Gibbes later on devoted much of his energy into working as a time-keeper and collator of results at major events in New Zealand, including the annual Superbike Championships, the now-discontinued Battle of the Streets around Paeroa, the innovative multi-discipline Golden Handlebars event in 1992 and the country’s largest and most famous annual motocross event, the New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville. The Woodville GP could be one of Gibbes’ greatest legacies. Gibbes – alongside his brother-in-law and fellow former GP racer Ken Cleghorn – co-founded the Woodville event in 1961, the two men determined to bring GP-level competition to this part of the world. The Woodville event marked its 60th anniversary in January 2021, although the iconic two-day competition has not run the past two seasons, with the pandemic in 2022 and horrendous flooding in January this year preventing any racing.

British Car Museum—Cars for Sale The all British Car Museum which was situated at Te Awanga, Hawkes Bay ceased operation a few years ago after the death of it’s founder Ian Hope. Ian started collecting Morris Minors in C1970s/80s for family members. When he ran out of family members to buy for he continued to buy the little cars as they were too good to be just left there. Most of these cars were reasonably priced at the time and there were lots of them around which prompted Ian to set up the Morris Minor Museum on the site which later became the British Car Museum. At it’s height the museum housed over 450 cars and was world renowned. At that time it is thought to have been the largest collection of British cars in the world. Over a long period Ian collected a large number of British cars of all makes and ages. They included small veteran Austins to large late model Rolls Royce’s and everything in between. Some are in very rough condition while others are in very nice condition. After Ian’s death the family began selling the cars and recently sold the entire property with over a hundred cars still in the sheds. The new owner wishes to sell the remaining cars and invites anyone who is interested in purchasing any of these cars to contact him before the end of November to view the cars and “do a deal”. All the cars will need attention to some degree. Any cars still at the venue after November will be sold by Turners Car Auctions. All the cars were stored on axle stands and these are also for sale at $30.00 a pair.

WEBER SPECIALTIES LTD Company Profile NZ’s finest & most experienced Carburettor Sales and team. Weber, Dellorto, SU, Solex, Stromberg & most other makes, serviced, restored and repaired. •

New carburettors supplied and fitted.

Worn carburettors serviced to new condition.

Restoration of carburettors to the highest concours standards.

Damaged carburettors repaired.

Obsolete & hard to find components manufactured.

Restoration Our workshop is set up with repair processes for each type of worn or damaged component. The carburettor is stripped right down to the body, each piece is examined for wear, corrosion and, in the case of calibrated parts, tested for compliance with the original specifications and replaced where necessary with new parts. All the components are put through our

cleaning procedure, separated into related groups for processing, restored to original finish and reassembled to bring the carburettor back to as near to original condition as is feasible. There are many variables so there is no set price for a restoration. All jobs are individually priced before we start the process so we do need to see the carburettor before giving you an estimate. Usually there is no charge for assessing your carburettor except for any freight involved.

Weber Specialty 1/12 Anvil Road Silverdale Auckland 0932 Email: Weberspx@gmail.com Website: www.weberspecialties.co.nz I can very much recommend this company, Weber Specialty. After years of carburettor instability with my 1974 Triumph Spitfire twin carburettors, my son in-law took it into Weber specialty where the twin carburettors were over hauled and refitted. The difference is amazing, she starts easily now and is running very sweetly. Joyce Calder, Bleat Editor. 33
