Chairman's Chat by John Redding
On my arrival at the club rooms for the AGM it was soon down to business in the comfort of our new chairs. On hearing a warm welcome from Jim and then the Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, and Club Captain reports, our club members must be very pleased with the smooth running of our club. I must not forget all the other people working behind the scenes like the committee members, the librarian, the magazine editor, the website controller, the parts shed, swap meet and all the marvellous people working to make our club a success, The ladies in the kitchen also deserve a mention for preparing supper at our meetings as well. I extend to all and everyone my heartfelt thanks for your efforts. I hope as your new chairman I will have a great time working along with you all and meeting many more club members. My wife and I have only been a member of the club for approximately seven years and I was surprised that with such a successful club, no members were willing to take on the chairman's position, so at the last minute I put my hand up, and now you are stuck with me. Once elected and after standing at the front of the hall looking out upon all our members, I thought there was a large number of people more suitable for the position other than myself. Not knowing a lot of members I feel there is a daunting task ahead, however from here it is a case of one day at a time. Since joining the club I have found the members very friendly and willing to help if there has been a problem. We both also enjoy the camaraderie and the fellowship of our members as well. Keep your wheels turning, your water topped up. And also don’t forget your car/s. Best wishes from your new Chairman, John Redding

“Charity Begins at Home” By Kaaren Smylie Club Captain When people say ‘Charity begins at home’ they very often mean ‘you should look after your own kids, family and own circle first and then be kind to people’ which is not the original meaning of the proverb. The original meaning isn’t from the bible but it is so near to being so, that it is reasonable to describe it as biblical. Charity does begin in the home – that is to say kids learn charity in the home. And many a member of our club including myself, have passed the odd comment that our vintage car club is like one big happy family - forever assisting in times of need or helping out others with ‘charitable’ deeds. Man is by nature a pretty social creature, who fulfils his human purpose by being engaged with the society, the community, the neighbourhood, the organisation, or the group that he works or lives with. I know I bang my drum regularly about all the fantastic people who are members of our club, but we are most fortunate to have a wonderful group of volunteers who toil away at our club rooms on a regular basis to keep them in top notch condition for their fellow members to enjoy. Whether its keeping the grounds or the club room spick and span, to updating the library, or volunteering their time weekly to go to Waipuna Hospice to clean the nurses cars, they are all out their ‘doing their thing’ for the sake of charity. Many of you would have read in the latest ‘Beaded Wheels’ our VCCNZ are giving their full support to a new annual fundraising event for the Cancer Society to raise awareness of the VCC Club nationally while benefitting a nominated charity. Your committee made the decision that our Branch will be part of this great event happening on Sunday 27th August. The BOPVCC representative who will be the organiser and liaison person for this event is Ken Frew, and Ken will be assisted by Linda Downey. These two committee members will be given support and guidance from an Event Manager appointed by the VCC. Details of the Run planned for our Club will be in your August Klaxon.
We consider this event is going to be a ‘Monty’ for the VCC reaching nationwide coverage...hmm maybe you could liken it to NZ winning the America’s Cup...It certainly will have the ‘feel good factor’ about it. There is also another charity event happening locally in the middle of August on Tuesday 22 that our Club will be supporting. For a number of years many of our members have volunteered their time to give up a morning to assist the local Cancer Society with their annual delivery of 1600 bunches of daffodils to the local businesses in the area. We are looking for volunteers please from our Club to assist the Cancer Society with the deliveries, if you can help out on the 22 nd please contact me ASAP (further details in this Klaxon)

Want a night of frivolity and difference... on Saturday 19thAugust, ‘Night Owl Cinema’ are screening for one night only at Baycourt Theatre Charlie Chaplin’s “The Circus”. This silent film is to be accompanied by the Mighty Wurlitzer organ, an instrument that twirls out of the stage and is built into the walls of Baycourt. A wonderful excuse darling to dust off your vintage threads and come dressed to the nines in 1920s clobber for a fun night out with a group of your friends...Oh so frightfully, frightfully! Kimberley Cleland from ‘Night Owl’ has reduced the price of the tickets for our BOPVCC members to $18 p.p. (Please see the advert in this Klaxon or contact me) For more information about the screening you can go online to https:// www.facebook.com/NightOwlCinema/ For our Club night in July we have invited Denise Arnold, a local solicitor, to come along and give you an informative and interesting talk. Denise wears several hats, however her main passion is working to promote education in developing countries, and in 2008 she established The Cambodia Charitable Trust. This Trust has grown into having a significant, positive impact on the education of thousands of children in rural Cambodia, and Denise travels to visit schools, teachers and children every 8 months for two weeks. All work for the Cambodia Trust is on a voluntary basis and this allows for 100% of donations received to be passed directly to the schools. The Trust has Teresa Gattung as their Patron, and Nadia Lim as their Ambassador. Denise is also involved in the education of lawyers in developing countries through Law Asia and the World Justice Project. On a number of occasions several of our members in the past have mentioned to both Jim and I that it would be great if we could have someone come along to one of our Club nights and talk to us about the importance of having our legal affairs in order, and having an ‘enduring power of attorney’. Therefore we decided that Denise would be that ‘someone’. So ladies and gentlemen not to ‘bog’ you down with a night of legal jargon but give you a fascinating human interest talk. Come along, because we know you will enjoy listening to Denise! In closing, I look forward to one more year as your Club Captain and, in addition, wearing another one of my many hats as the incoming VCC North Island Club Captain. Here’s to a challenging but stimulating 2017/18 in the Smylie household...I think I will keep my husband ‘forever young’ with all the many activities planned coming up for us.
Wishing you for July a month filled with good health, happiness, love and laughter, and above all safe motoring! Kaaren

From the Secretary: July report Hi Folks! A big thanks to all those members who attended our AGM. Are you aware that some people stay away from AGM’s for fear of being placed in the invidious position of being asked to assist in the running of ‘their’ club. Why is this club so successful you may ask, it is true that you as an individual can sit back and leave the hard work to someone else, however if everyone did that we would crash and burn like many other organisations. Your new Chairman John Redding has stepped up to the plate and for that I for one am very grateful.
Jim Smylie our illustrious Past Chairman deserves a good deal of recognition for all the work and dedication he has put into ‘your’ club. Jim will stay on in ‘our’ Committee to further add his contribution. While Owen Smith has stepped down after many years we must all thank him as well. For those who attended you were able to observe the work and dedication of our Club Captain Kaaren Smylie. Her report was amazing. To top it off Kaaren has put her hand up to continue the good work, plus volunteer for the position of North Island Club Captain. On a sad note Rita Winterbottom, our Welfare lady is now in hospital after a bad fall. Both Jill and I visited her a few days ago with some flowers. It just happened to be her birthday too. Don’t tell anybody she is 84. It is logical that Rita can no longer give her full attention to this task, so we require a caring person to take over the roll as Welfare Officer. Please give any Committee member a ring as soon as you can. Keith Perkins our Treasurer has a smile on his face after our new banking procedure was passed by the members. What a great job he does for ‘our’ Club. We have a full complement of Committee members who decided to stay on along with all our hard-working Officers that you will find listed in front of your Klaxon. In the event that we require another volunteer I would like to think that you would consider stepping up to the vacant position. Remember folks “You Reap what you sow in this life.” Your Secretary Joe Scott

All articles must be in writing and received PREFERABLY early in the month, the close off date being Wednesday following the committee meeting. Hi All, Congratulations or should I say a big thankyou that must surely go to John Redding for putting up his hand for the chairmanship job. It is a job that not many will take on but John was unable to stand by and leave us without. Good on him. In John’s first report he has stated, he felt others are more able than he to take it on but refused to put up their hand. I agree with him there. Too many of our members are almost frightened to commit themselves in lending a hand and leave it up to others. However I can only say this, the more you put into a club like ours the more pleasure you get out of it. So John, you say “you are nervous about the first meeting”. Yes I believe you probably are. However once you are over that hurdle, you will be like a snowball and gather knowledge as you go and will enjoy the experience. So far as putting an effort in. I was presented with the Keenest Member trophy at the last meeting. It feels great to be recognized in this way for the work I put in and can only say a heartfelt thankyou to the committee that nominated me for it. I will also go as far to say, while the trophy was awarded to me, I do get a huge help from Yvonne who has also recently held the same trophy. Thankyou hardly seems enough but THANKYOU!!. We both get enjoyment out of what we do for the club. This month came also the announcement that our Kaaren Smylie was nominated for the VCC North Island Club Captain, and as the nominations are now closed with no other nominations received may consider herself elected. The position only now to be ratified at the VCC AGM. May I say congratulations Kaaren. I am sure you will put your heart and sole into the task ahead. We are now well into our film nights and they seem to be getting more popular as we proceed. I have a great line up of movies to show now without repeating any previously shown. So come along all. Details are further in this issue Klaxon. Other clubs are also welcome. You do not need to book. Just turn up and introduce yourselves. My computer classes have not gone well due to no further interest so the final revision class is now to be held and that is it. I do feel that many members are missing out on something but like the saying goes. “You can lead a horse to water etc”. There also seems to be a small surge in articles coming in. That’s great and I hope it continues. It is these articles that make a good magazine so please keep it up. Articles may be sent to:
klaxoninfo@gmail.com
or get a written copy to me somehow and I will do my best to publish it. Sex jokes are not appreciated so please keep the content of articles clean. That’s all for now, Paul

June 2017 Mid-week Run to Athenree and Waihi Beach: By Margaret and Bob McGarva Approximately fifty folks in twenty-eight cars braved a typical mid-winter day – cold and windy – to meet at Haiku Park, Katikati, for morning tea before motoring on to Athenree House. Built by Hugh and Adela Stewart in the late 1800s with spectacular views of the Tauranga Harbour and once the centre of the Athenree community this is now a lovingly restored landmark historic homestead. Avid volunteers were happy to talk and answer questions about the homestead which is set up today as a working country house. Open to the public on the 1st Sunday of the month if you are ever passing by and wish for some local history - just for $5! This most interesting visit was followed by the popular lunch spot at the Waihi RSA. A good day out and thanks to Don and Ngaire Wade for organising yet another successful midweek run. Facts: Built by Hugh and Adela Stewart as a residence in 1878. Part of a 300 acre Farm. Restoration began 1995.
Top: The Lounge and looking out over the upper Tauranga harbour. (The Ophir Room) Centre: The dining room (originally the stables) Bottom: Before it all started

The lounge is called the Ophir Room. Named after the ship R.M.S. Ophir that brought out the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall 1910

New Member Beverly Long—Her Car
I received this email from one of our newest members. Bev Long. She is obviously very proud of her car and has every right to be so. A lovely Alvis TA21. She says it is undergoing a little work on the window seals at the moment and can’t wait until it is on the road.
"Yes Old World Charmer" Travel back into history with my newly acquired "Miss Daisy", a 1951 Alvis TA 21. Has she been botoxed, nipped and tucked, restored? Only the curious would know, and wouldn't she like to believe, she has everything going for her now! The wonderful antique ambience of this pride and joy of mine, original of course, just like it's owner, is so precious to me, and is quickly playing a very special part in my life. Bev, the Keeper of "Miss Daisy" Thanks Bev. Much appreciated. Looking forward to seeing the real item. Paul
Club Debut This Month
1934 Chrysler Airflow Owner: Kevin and Joy Morris. A beautiful though unusual car caught a lot of attention on our June midweek run . Manufactured by Chrysler between 1934– 1937 the Airflow model was one of the first American cars manufactured with an all steel body. The Airflow design was also the first model built by Chrysler using the Monocoque construction method. The streamline shape did not catch on though as was considered too far ahead of its time.

Fuel Injection for Classic Cars: Article supplied by Tom Callinan An article has appeared in Automobile Magazine as regarding converting many classic car carburettors to a fuel injection system. The information put out by Burlen Fuel systems Ltd, who are the manufacturers of SU, Amal, and Zenith carburettors, have developed a system to convert the SU carburettor to Fuel Injection. The device is hidden inside the carburettor with only the ECU on the outside giving the appearance of being original. While being developed initially for the Jaguar XK, Burlen claim that the system will also be developed eventually to work on many other models of cars giving an improved performance and emission. Details are limited at the moment for the device as it hasn't been released as yet, however Burlen hope to have it ready to promote at the Goodwood Members Meeting and several other world class shows. Burlen are excited by their innovation and say the device turns old thinking on its head. It is fresh thinking and development in the Classic Car world. The Demise of the Petrol Driven Vehicle
by Paul Beck
An article supplied to me by Peter Woodend which was published in the NZ Herald stated: No more NEW petrol or diesel cars, trucks or buses will be sold anywhere in the world within 8 years. The entire market for land transport will switch to electrification, leading to a collapse of oil prices and the demise of the petroleum industry as we have known it for over a century. This is the futuristic forecast by Stanford University economist Tony Seba. Seba claims people will switch, en mass to self driving electric vehicles that are 10 times cheaper to run than fossil based cars with an expected lifespan of 1.6 million km. His predictions: -By 2025 all new vehicles will be electric -Users will switch to self driving electric vehicles with running costs only 10% of those for petrol or diesel cars -Silicon Valley will triumph over existing carmakers -Cities will ban human drivers -Long term crude oil price will fall to US$25 a barrel -Car dealers will disappear China and India are now preparing and drawing up plans pushing for electric vehicles by 2025, however Opec dismissed the claims describing electric vehicles are nothing more than a fringe curiosity and will make little difference to ever rising global demand for oil #. For more: http://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/news/92592333/Petrol-cars-will-beobsolete-in-8-years-says-US-report I was prompted by this article to do a little research on the matter. Electric cars are powered by lithium battery. So I did a little research as to how and where lithium is obtained and came across this article: Like any mining operation, mining lithium has its impact on the environment. Today’s mining companies take sustainable development very seriously and
15
responsibly and focus on environmental management more than ever. Each time we begin talking about mining for resources, there is an environmental concern. While USA and other developed countries are pursuing becoming independent from fossil fuels in favor of alternative fuels and electrically powered cars, there’s a bigger picture. When it comes to mass production of hybrid and electric vehicles, the main problem has been a shortage of batteries. And the main material in growing demand is lithium. An element found in abundance in South America, where the cheapest extraction method by evaporating salt brines in the solar ponds deploys usage of cheap and toxic PVC; and in lithium-rich regions of Chile where extracting the metal uses two-thirds of the area’s fresh drinking water. Lithium is the 33rd most abundant element, however, it does not naturally occur in its pure form due to its high reactivity. Lithium metal, due to its alkaline properties, is corrosive and reacts with water. Breathing lithium dust or alkaline lithium compounds irritates respiratory tracts. Prolonged exposure to lithium can cause fluid to build-up in the lungs, leading to pulmonary edema. The metal itself is a handling hazard because of the caustic hydroxide produced when it is in contact with water causing an explosion. Lithium mining carries high environmental costs. Mining companies prospecting lithium in northern Tibet, salt plains of South America, and Chile as well as lithium at Bolivia's Salar De Uyuni require extensive extraction operations and water in a dry land. But according to an article published by TIME, “lithium mining, as observed in countries with deposits like Chile, Argentina and China, seems to be less hazardous than other kinds of mineral extraction. ‘Lithium could be one of the least contaminating mining processes,’ says Marco Octavio Rivera of Bolivia’s Environmental Defense League, although he notes that prolonged exposure to lithium can cause nervous system disorders.” Everything comes at the cost, so while the environmental impact might not be worse than mountaintop mining, it’s going to be important to pay attention to the environmental impact, because there will be one. Summing up the articles: To the world this all sounds like very futuristic I am sure. Yes electric vehicles may become the future vehicle but within the 25 year time span. Well that remains to be seen. You only need to look at the poorer countries who cant even afford a modern car of today. They do not even have a regular power supply to charge the electric car. It cannot happen there I am sure for quite some time. So the electric car is destined for modern cities for the near future as I see it. Even if NZ adopts the Electric Vehicle as standard, I think many will reflect memories of the CNG powered vehicle as being the fuel of the future. And many were stung by the rules and regulations that came into force afterwards making it uneconomical to keep going. In my lifetime? I don’t think so. My feelings are, demand will look after production of the fossil cars and the electric cars will for quite a while be a novelty. Another reservation I have is what is the risk if a large lithium battery such as in a car or truck gets exposed to fire such as in a garage or home or even accident. I feel the result could be spectacular and very dangerous. As yet I have not heard of a case and while the experts may have safety measures in place where an electric vehicle is involved in an accident, No one can predict the outcome of a fire from an external source. Also even the experts get it wrong when we reflect on the outcome of Samsung and their phone fiasco. So electric for me. NO WAY!

IMPORTANT NOTICE It is sad to report that one of our members in South Auckland has had a large number of tools & parts stolen from his garage. Among the items is two TC21 bumpers that have been chromed recently. There are also a number of other Alvis parts. Altogether there were tens of thousands of dollars worth taken including a little used Myford lathe & many machine tools & power tools. The robbery took place in South Auckland but the parts could be sold anywhere. If you are offered Alvis parts other than from known members of the Club can you please let me know urgently. Contact Clive on 07 5434385 or Kane@netsmart.net.nz Best regards Clive
