Welfare Notes by Rita Winterbottom Well this month I am starting with saying thank you for the card which I received, having had a little day stay at the Tauranga Hospital, that was a very nice surprise for me - Thank you all again. In other news. I have rung Margaret Goldsmith who has been in hospital, of course she is home now and her days will be taken up with hospital appointments for a bit, so they can get things 'sorted' for her, meantime - of course - we send her lots of those good vibes and hope her recovery will go smoothly for her Owen too.. I have spoken to Snow Greaves and Gladys, he is making slow progress but all good Gladys says, and they are going to stay with family for a few days, so that will be nice for them, and Snow of course is pleased to be home in his own environment for a few days, keep up the good work Snow we all send you our very best wishes.. I hope that there are not too many of you suffering with colds and 'flu etc, although apart from a couple of very cold mornings we haven't really done too badly so far, so we mustn't complain. Take care of each other

Chairman’s Chat
June 2017
This is the last Chairman’s Chat I will write as your Chairman, as I will be standing down at our next Club night being our AGM. It certainly does not seem like three years ago when I sat down to write my first article. Those three years have been some of the most enjoyable and satisfying years of my life. There is an old saying that “the more you put into something the more you get out of it”. Kaaren and I have been members of our Club for many years, but for the first ten or so years we had little direct involvement, thus were little more than members in name only and as a consequence received little satisfaction from our membership. Then we participated in our first rally, which we really enjoyed. I still remember that event well. We then started to get further involved in the activities of the BOP Vintage Car Club, and the more we did so the more we enjoyed it. So much so we then organised several rallies ourselves. As you can imagine, we really got a thrill out of organising these rallies and have them go successfully. We also met some wonderful people, people that have become dear friends to us over the few years, and will be with us for the rest of our lives. We have also had a lot of support, which was demonstrated to us so forcefully in our recent troubled times following Kaaren’s accident.
Then the big one. It was suggested to me that I put my name forward as Chairman. I was uncertain whether to do so as I was still working and not sure if I had the time to do it justice. But Kaaren encouraged me to take it on, and I am pleased she did. In the early days I knew little about the running of the Club, and did not know many of the members, but Alastair was a great person to follow as Chairman and assisted me in every way he could. I also was lucky with the committee you gave me to work with. They were also supportive, and with their help I managed to get through those difficult times in the early days. Then that wonderful thing happened; Kaaren took on the Club Captains job, and we have had the most wonderful last few years working with the Club to assist making it the great Club it is today. It is the fastest growing branch of any in the country, and in my humble opinion, the best. That is a tribute to not just those on the committee but to all those who work tirelessly on various aspects of the Club. It reinforces to me the adage quoted above. I certainly have had a lot out of our club, and look forward to many more years of involvement, fun and fellowship.
Thank you all for the opportunity!!! Happy motoring and save driving. Regards
Jim Smylie

Absolutely Fabulous at Every Age By Kaaren Smylie Club Captain Everything is absolutely fabulous...And no, I am not just making reference to swilling “Brolli” like Patsy and Eddie from that crazy TV series ‘Absolutely Fabulous’, but I am referring to all of us at the BOP VCC. These are meant to be our twilight years now where we are encouraged to get out there (if present circumstances allow) and have a few adventures; or as your outgoing Chairman Jim says to me regularly, “I want to have an adventure every day for the next twenty years until I am ninety, or otherwise I will feel cheated!”. “It is only when we truly know and understand that we have a limited time on earth, and that we have no way of knowing when our time is up, that we will begin to live each day to the fullest, as if it were the only one we had” Elizabeth Kubler-Ross Bit of a wake-up call that we all can get at our respective ages to make us start philosophising and saying to our likeminded friends, “We have to live for today, because we damn well don’t know what’s around the corner”, I am pretty sure a lot of you are nodding your heads in agreement with me as you read this statement. So for some of us we do put our ‘A’ into ‘G’ and do something about it, or maybe we even go so far as to write a bucket list with the thought that a list will keep us on track and remind us to follow through. Do you have a bucket list? I’d be surprised if you didn’t everyone seems to have one these days or makes a verbal reference to having one, but if the term is one that is new to you perhaps a short definition is in order. A bucket list is by definition, a list of things that you want to do before you die. (In other words before you ‘kick the bucket’) The list is personal to you and you can start it at any age. The term gained popularity after the 2007 movie “the Bucket List”, where Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson (both of these characters were dying of cancer) created a bucket list of things to do before they died – and then actually followed through with it. I suppose one of the main reasons for having a bucket list is to inspire you to have an exciting life. But then it’s at that point where most of us come unstuck and maybe that mental/ written list of things to do doesn’t quite come off? Don’t you think it’s better to regret something you have done, rather than regret something you should have done?
So I won’t prophesize anymore but tell you I am going to ‘put my money where my mouth is’ and take on a couple of these so called adventures from that Bucket List before the end of the year .

First adventure is at Queen’s Birthday Weekend, Jim and I are going to head to the South Island in the Model ‘A’ to Twizel to meet up with Alastair & Gwen Jones who are currently on holiday down South, to participate in the annual Irishman Creek Rally. This year is the 63rd running of this event with over 130 entries and the participants will all be driving Pre 1931 cars, of which more than half will most likely be Model ‘A’ Fords. Last year Jim and Alastair participated for the first time in this infamous rally and had an absolute ball, so much so they are both as keen as mustard to take the challenge on again this year. I have to divulge to you Alastair is so eager he has declared he is prepared to sit in our ‘dickey’ seat to do the rally so he can be part of this whole weekend of madness. However, after my fall from grace three months ago I think I have pretty much taken myself out of the equation as the navigator for Jim, so Alastair will be taking my place and weather dependant etc, etc, (and if I was a guessing person,) I would say Gwen and I will probably follow the boys in the modern, or at the very least meet up with them for the lunches and dinners to share in a bit of their excitement. Watch this space, I will report back on the shenanigans from the weekend in July! To those of you who haven’t heard of this Rally before and as way of explanation, the rally is known as the Irishman Creek Rally because in its early years it went to Irishman Creeks Station, the farm run by Bill Hamilton, recognised as the father of the jet boat. This year the rally fires up early on the Saturday morning in Twizel by Lake Ruataniwha and finishes on Sunday evening in Fairlie, the in-between parts is the mystery as to whereabouts and what we will be doing, as the route changes every year. The rule is the winner from the previous year is to set the challenge for the following year; so your guess is as good as ours as to how gruelling the weekend will be, not really quite fitting just yet for a bird pushing a Zimmer frame...Might have to be added to my 2018 bucket list. Second adventure; ‘Route 66’ departing NZ about 8thSeptember will be the Goldsmith’s, the Stafford’s and the Smylie’s for six weeks in our own Model A’s. On arrival we will be joined by eight other couples who will also be driving their pre 1950 vehicles on this vintage tour that will cover the 2,448 mile highway, crossing through eight States from Chicago to Santa Monica, California! The tour will travel 100 miles per day with ‘rest-days’ in key destinations, so we will be moving at a very civilised pace so as to get to enjoy a taste of old fashioned USA and Route 66. On the subject of overseas travel I recently received a phone call from a Lee Merritt from ‘Destination Havana’, a small tour operator who is running a 17 day round trip from Auckland on 21 September 2017 to Cuba. Lee contacted me because she thought this trip maybe of some interest to our members because of Cuba being famous for the residents who still today drive 1950s autos.
11
I have displayed the brochure with all the information about the trip on our notice board at the Club for your perusal. Please note your diaries that on July 2 we are going to have our annual mid winter Christmas lunch. This year the theme is ‘Crazy Hat’ so creative people please dress up and show us your marvellous talent and imagination and arrive decked out in your best bib and tucker and ‘crazy’ hat...be prepared to get a few laughs. (See advert) My broadside readings of recent lead me to a heading that read, “What is the best British car of all time?” The British Auto Express, a weekly auto magazine decided to run a survey to get the opinions of representatives from Aston Martin, BMW and Jaguar Land Rover to create a definitive list of the most influential models in the UK. Guess which car came out tops, and how they rated: Mini, 1959-2000 Jaguar E-Type, 1961-1975 Land Rover series/Defender, 1948-2016 Aston Martin DB5. 1963-1965 McLaren F1, 1992-1998 Range Rover Mk1. 1970-1996 Ford GT40, 1964-1969 Caterham/Lotus Seven, 1957 –present Ford Escort Mk1, 1967-1975 Lotus Elise, 19696-2001 This survey was a little reminder of how many iconic cars Britain has produced over the years, and highlighted the sheer diversity on offer from ‘Brit-built’ models with these top 10 including low-cost runarounds, all terrain tackling off roaders, two-seater sports cars, record breaking exotica, and even a humble family saloon. The good old Mini was the first car I ever owned and a real little ‘beauty’ she was at that. All the members in our Club who own Mini’s feel proud, because you always knew you were driving a wee ‘bobby dazzler’ didn’t you? Very popular these little cars; the local Mini Club’s membership is growing with popularity, and even more so nationally since the advent of the very popular ‘Pork Pie’ movies. So folks until next month safe motoring and please keep yourselves well, now that we are approaching the winter months we need to rug up with our ‘hot toddies’ and keep warm. What's more don’t forget our AGM is 12 June, and we are still on the lookout for a replacement committee member to join the ‘team’ when Owen Smith steps down. “Life is a either a daring adventure or nothing at all”. Kaaren PS. By the way that’s not me back in the Mini picture…Just in case you were thinking it was!

All articles must be in writing and received PREFERABLY early in the month, the close off date being Wednesday following the committee meeting. Hi All, This month started as being very busy for me. At our last meeting I presented a video I made to introduce new members to our club. While I was very happy with the end result I did not expect the favorable response I received for it. I felt a little embarrassed by it all I must say, with many of the comments I received. At this point I have made 40 DVD’s and packaged ready to mail out to the new members as they are introduced to the club. From here on the job is easy. I just address and post. I do feel a lot happier though that I am doing something positive towards introducing members to our club and along with David Joblin who gets a name badge made, then sending out should go a long way towards making them welcome. A lot of credit also must go to Chris Cole who has run several new members nights which have gone off very well indeed. I feel we must be doing something right, as at our monthly meetings we are seating in excess of 100 people. This appears to be an extraordinary number when we talk to other clubs and some of them larger than ours. They cannot compare. To us it is all positive and does reflect of how the committee’s thinking is met with a positive response. It is all good. As we end another chapter we can only say well done to you all and as we start another, I hope that the good work continues towards making our Club a good one to belong to. Our new chairs arrived in time for our last meeting. 120 of them in all. How good it looked to see them all set up and all the same. The old ones were pretty tatty and worn out looking so while there are a few murmurs about the comfort or costing, I can only say they certainly have tidied the hall up and as I am quite often the one that puts them all in order etc., the new chairs are easier to stack and take less room. We will be missing a few members shortly whom will be attending other trips. The Jones’ and Smylie's are preparing for another assault at the Irishman Rally. However I believe the girls are to be onlookers only, and are to meet the BOY’S with their toy at each of the days destinations. I am sure both girls will be just a teeny bit envious of the guys. Maybe they will let you ride with them next time. Preparations are well under way also for the Smylie's, the Goldsmith’s and the Stafford's who are going to attend the Route 66 tour in USA. This tour is one that I have viewed many times in different forms on TV and am envious I must say. I hope for you all it is everything they say it is. 6 weeks I believe, so bon voyage guys and we all look forward to seeing those lovely photo’s. All for now

Visit to Nautilus Boat Stack and The Elms Midweek Run 10th May: by Yvonne Beck More than 20 cars (plus drivers and passengers) assembled near Nautilus Apartments on Cross Road, Tauranga to view the Boat Stack. This is an indoor facility where we saw more than a hundred boats stacked on four levels with room for at least another fifty. Boats varied in size up to a maximum of forty feet. We were lucky enough to see the boat hoist, lift, manoeuvre and lower one of the larger boats to water level and replace it back to its place in the facility. A channel leads out to the harbour. For this service the boat owners pay an annual fee ranging upwards from $5,500 depending on the boat length and this includes as many lifts as they require with no additional costs. From there we proceeded to the Elms for a picnic lunch on the lawn and a most interesting guided tour of the grounds, library, chapel and Mission House. The Mission House is considered to be the second most historic house in New Zealand and wandering through the house is like stepping back in time as it is furnished with the items belonging to the different generations of the family that lived there.

SOME GOOD IDEAS WORK AND SOME DON’T: by Paul Beck A number of people gathered on a recent club run and after a while we realised that the organisers had not turned up. For the purpose of this little story I will refer to them as Mr and Mrs X. After a some concern a member referred to his little notebook and eventually found a mobile number for them. We soon discovered that they had broken down but had called the AA who were coming to assist. They would try to meet us all if they get back on the road in time. We reorganised ourselves and continued on with the plan for the day. We all enjoyed the day. Yvonne and myself were the last to leave and just as we were packing up, who should arrive but Mr and Mrs X with their Model A in perfect running order. The story was then told how they stopped on the way and Mr X had filled up the Model A and gave the receipt to Mrs X. She read it and thought that was nice and cheap. However she said nothing. It was cheap so the bank manager would be happy. About a mile down the road the old Model A started bucking and eventually expired at the bottom of the hill in a great cloud of smoke. Oh no!! It was cheap because it was a fill of diesel. Help was not available because they had a mobile phone with no quick dial numbers stored. They did not bring their Klaxon and had no phone book. On your way said Mr X. I will wait here, so back she went up the hill towards the garage they had just left. LO!!!. A white knight in shining armour saw their plight and picked up Mrs X to return her to the Model A, then summoned the AA with his mobile phone. What a nice guy he was. The AA arrived much later and towed them back to the garage, so for a while the Model A was a Model A+AA. At the garage the diesel was drained and the Model A+AA was revived. Easy fixed said Mr X. All I had to do was put one of those magic bits of plastic in a machine and punch a few numbers. The garage man was happy. He got 2 fills of fuel sale, an easy service job to boot, and paid for straight away. However when Mr X came up with another good idea the garage man thought, is this guy for real. The idea being that the fuel taken out of the Model A could go into the Camper Van. Yeah right said the garage owner. The tank was about 1/4 full of petrol before you put the diesel in wasn't it. Not a good idea. So the AA departed and Mr and Mrs X were on their way again with the bank account a little lighter and Mrs X thinking quietly. Well those 2 good ideas were not successful. I better watch him more closely next time. Never mind. I have a nice container of fudge in the picnic basket that he hasn't found yet. Maybe that will sweeten him up again. As for Mr X. He is over that experiment and is now looking for something else he can improve with “A GOOD IDEA”

MTA100 CAR SHOW OF THE CENTURY: By Carole Lindsay Last Friday night 28 April we rang our Grandson to tell him of the MTA100 Car Show of the century that was on in Wellington that weekend, a car show worth going to. On Saturday morning while having breakfast the man of the house decided it would be too good an opportunity to miss, bags were packed and we drove down to Wellington in excellent weather, the autumn colours were in full bloom further down country, great scenery for driving.
Neale trying a Mustang for size
Chris Amon
There was over 150 of New Zealand’s most treasured, fastest and latest cars on show. For the first time in this country’s history the earliest cars were lined up with the very latest in the TSB Arena. They had three displays to honour and celebrate New Zealand’s love of cars and the stories attached to some of our greatest. They focused on eight kiwis and the cars and motorbikes, for example Burt Munro, John Britten, Denny Hulme, Bruce McLaren & Chris Amon were represented by the Formula One McLaren and the stunning Maserati 250F. However, I think the way they displayed the latest technology in hybrid and electric cars to robotic self driven cars, the Aquada, and other Amphibious vehicles was extremely well done. The outside display was in glorious sunshine and had many varieties of electric cars. A 1960s VW had even been converted by a local guy. He thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and was heard to say he would like to do it again.
Mc Laren
The main building was lit in stunning lighting to take your breathe away of all the new cars on display. The Hulme supercar in all its glory really took our fancy and Neal just had to try a brand new Mustang for size. The Trekka and the Enza the only vehicles manufactured in New Zealand were on display. The Rinspeed Budi is electric, autonomous and intelligent – it has been built to learn. It can be driven manually or used in autonomous mode. It was quite something to watch, the eye catching steering column either folds out of the way or doubles as a table during autonomous driving mode, it also allows either person in the front to take the wheel. No stopping to change drivers in this car! In the basement of the building usually reserved for parking were the vintage and

IMPORTANT NOTICE It is sad to report that one of our members in South Auckland has had a large number of tools & parts stolen from his garage. Among the items is two TC21 bumpers that have been chromed recently. There are also a number of other Alvis parts. Altogether there were tens of thousands of dollars worth taken including a little used Myford lathe & many machine tools & power tools. The robbery took place in South Auckland but the parts could be sold anywhere. If you are offered Alvis parts other than from known members of the Club can you please let me know urgently. Contact Clive on 07 5434385 or Kane@netsmart.net.nz Best regards Clive
