Welfare Notes by Rita Winterbottom Unfortunately we report that we have lost another long standing member of our club; Murrary McClymont has passed away. We send our condolences to Margaret and the family on this sad occasion. Also, one of our longstanding members Snow Greaves is in hospital unwell. On a lighter note, Kaaren appears to be coming along nicely (not back to the dancing stage - yet!!) so here’s hoping that the "getting better" stage doesn't take too long for her - keep up the good work Kaaren.. and as far as I am aware, everyone else is doing their best to keep well, let’s hope that we have a mild winter this time, after all, within a few weeks we will be halfway through the year! amazing.. So, thankfully, its short and sweet this time. Take care of each other and keep as well as you can... Rita
Please. If you know of any members unwell please send details to Rita so she is able to respond on behalf of the club

Chairman’s Chat April 2017 With only a few weeks to go before our AGM your committee has given thought to our constitution and what changes to it are required, if any, are required. We have decided that the current rules regarding how the Club makes payments to its suppliers is not practical in 2017, and does require change. The rule as it stands prescribes that payments by the Club must be made by cheque signed by two committee members, one being the Chairperson, the Secretary or the Treasurer. There are two downsides to this rule: firstly it means the Treasurer must physically travel to other part of the town to get the second prescribed signature, and also we have a situation where society is moving on from using cheques to increasingly using electronic means as a way of payment. This relatively new means of payment will become more prevalent in the near future, with banks now warning of the pending demise of cheques. So your committee has resolved to put to the Club at the AGM a remit to change the Club rules to allow this change. A copy of this remit is printed in this issue of Klaxon. Whilst the change of rule will allow payments to be made by electronic means, thus allowing the treasurer to instigate a payment, then have another authorised officer ratify it, be assured there will be a mechanism in place to ensure that no one can make a payment on his or her own, with the safe guard of the bank requiring a second authorisation. This is an important change to our rules; the first of any changes made I believe since the current rules were decided upon in October 2000. I recommend that you consider the proposed change carefully, feel free to contact any other member of the Club to discuss it if you are unsure of its implications, and make sure you attend the AGM at our June meeting to have your say as to whether the change should be made!! On another note, it was with regret that I was unable to organise an end of month run this month. Things seem to conspire against me every time I tried to organise it. But be assured there will be end of run every month for the foreseeable future. I have runs lined up to: Waikato Stud next month, J Swap trucking museum possibly the month after, and to Matamata Panelworks who are rebuilding some interesting vehicles, all these runs to Matamata. Then to Dave Mordals workshop at Te Awamutu who is rebuilding five Bugatis’ which will be something to see. So you can see your committee has things well in hand. Trust you are enjoying the great weather we are having, and the great motoring it allows.
Keep well and see you soon.
Regards,
Jim Smylie.

So what is newsworthy and what isn’t?
By Kaaren Smylie Each week I scan the main ‘broadsheets’ looking for little articles that I think could be interesting enough to quote from or comment on, or what some folks might call ‘useless pieces of information’. This last month I gathered up a little potpourri of ‘tidbits’ that predominately came from the “Granny Herald” about a guy called Austin and a car called Austin. First to catch my eye was an article in the business section of the NZ Herald with a heading: “Prodigy wants to drive your car’…a 22 year old is a leader in auto technology…” “Prodigy Wants to Drive Your Car”, NZ Herald, 090417 Why did this catch my eye? Not only is Austin Russell a smart kid with a great name, he has a knack for turning something ordinary into something extraordinary. And the fact that a relatively unknown college dropout of barely drinking age can raise millions of dollars shows the appetite for lidar. There’s hope yet folks for our grandchildren to ‘make big’ and support us through our retirement.
Austin’s last year of primary school he turned a Nintendo gaming handset into a cell phone. At 15, he built a holographic keyboard. By 17, he filed for a patent. Now at 22, he’s running a start-up at the heart of Silicon Valley’s latest technology mania. As founder and chief executive of Luminar Technologies, Russell and his team are building lidar, a hyper accurate laser sensing technology crucial for self driving cars. Start-ups Velodyne Lidar and Quanergy Systems have raised at least US$150 million ($214m) apiece from giants like Ford, Baidu, Daimler and Samsung. Russell has raised a similar amount according to people familiar with Luminar’s finances. The company, founded in 2012 had sought a valuation above US$1 billion when it was raising money last year, one source said. Several car companies want autonomous vehicles on the road by 2020 or 2021, which means they’re starting to order lidar systems. Velodyne expects to ship 12,000 units this year, 80,000 in 2018 and 1.7 million by 2022. A portion of his revenue will go towards a small fleet of Tesla Model S electric cars, which it uses for testing. It all gets bit technical for me, but all I know is that autonomous cars often require two or more lidar sensors at a hefty price tag, but with the help of Russell’s ingenuity he could develop a lidar for less that $1000 (USD). Back to the present, in Sydney at the end of May there will be plenty of auction action, where toys of all shapes and sizes, including some fetching restored pedal cars will be up for grabs in a Shannon auction. The only rotary motion required will be the pumping up and down of little legs on pedals including a 1948 Austin J40 which makes up a collection of similarly themed tyke transportation. More than 30,000 of the little Austin’s were built by Austin Motors at a factory in South Wales which used the hand skills of disabled ex-miners suffering from lung disease.
7
Each car featured an opening boot and bonnet, a fake engine block up front, a working horn and lights and upholstery fashioned after the life-size version. Pedal cars are becoming bankable collector items these days, so the Austin’s price guide of $4000 to $6000 might be more of a bargain than it first appears to be.-“Peddling Pedal Cars”, NZ Herald, 150417 Speaking of auctions, Jim and I headed to Matamata on the weekend to Bill Troughton’s property, we had all good intentions before we left Tauranga that we would come home as proud owners of a Model ‘N’. No such luck, there were some rather more serious punters than us there who had travelled from far and wide with the same idea, except the great divide was; their wallets were a tad fatter than ours. So it turns out the new owner of the ‘N’ is a relation of mine from Galatea… Good bidding Eric! What an amazing three day event, cars and camper vans as far as the eye could see parked everywhere in Bill’s paddocks full of keen punters. They had food carts set up, coffee carts and even a beer cart to keep the punters there and keen. My last little tidbit from the NZ Herald was the AA giving tips for owners of classic vehicles and how they can hold their value. Nowadays, it’s a rare to sell your car for more than you paid for it; however some vehicles retain more value than others. It’s not easy to identify a vehicle that’s destined to become a classic because, more often than not, they gain their status long after they’ve been introduced to the market. Taking a look at what’s on the road today won’t cut it, but bear in mind that most classic vehicles weren’t considered to be special when they first appeared in the car yard. In 2016, a 1974 Volkswagen Beetle sold for just shy of NZ$63.000 at an auction in Denmark. It had travelled 90,000km over four years and then was parked in a barn for 40 years before being rediscovered. The lesson here is if you think you’re on to winner, don’t be too quick to sell, instead consider keeping it as an investment. There is always a cost attached to it, but in the long run it’s worth it. Classic cars become more difficult to keep on the road over time because of the limited availability of parts and finding specialist expertise required to service them. Scouring broad and specialist listings by age of vehicle and cost is a good indicator to classic car status. “Buyers Guide: Vehicles that hold their value”, Driven, 200417 If you ever have any queries on anything to do with your vehicles, our very own VCC is your starting point. The Club is a font of all knowledge for enthusiastic owners of veteran, vintage and classic cars. The committee has decided that the Club should celebrate a Mid-Winter Christmas lunch again, after last year’s event being a great success. In my opinion I believe particularly during the winter months, no one is that keen to come out on the cold evenings so lunches are always more popular. We will schedule this event for late June or mid-July. There will be an advert in the June Klaxon with the details, and as well I will send out an email to all the members I have on my list. So for now folks, I am a raft of information, with the time I have currently on my hands, what better way to get up to speed than to check out my “Granny Herald”, car magazines online and off course a touch of Discovery Turbo… Safe Motoring Everyone. Kaaren (Club Captain)

Secretary’s report: by Joe Scott Hi Folks! It has been a crazy month as far as our weather is concerned. Our 13th Model A Rally in Napier at Easter was dealt a blow (that’s a pun) by the inclement conditions. We took notice of forecasters who warned us to be very careful. On that basis, we left our old car at home and took the Landcruiser, “just as well.” The wind was very strong, rained like hell and trees down all over the place. Hope you good people survived. The Committee is preparing for the AGM in June and you now have the opportunity to be involved, “It is your choice.” We are sorry to hear of the passing of one of our long-time club members Murray McClymont. I myself have not seen Murray for many years, however, our sympathy goes out to his wife Margaret along with her family. “That’s all folks.” Joe Scott Secretary.
We welcome the following new members
This month we have Stephen Raymond: Stephen has 2 Morris Minors
Welcome Stephen to the Vintage Car Club. We all look forward to meeting you and viewing your vehicles

All articles must be in writing and received PREFERABLY early in the month, the close off date being Wednesday following the committee meeting. Hi All, Members privacy Occasionally I receive an email from another club, which has been sent to quite a few other persons as well and their addresses are shown. It surprises me that a hue and cry has not gone up from their members that their email contacts have been given in good faith to the club and they have now been widely distributed to others. Maybe most simply don’t care. I do not know if that is the case but no wonder contact lists are being ripped off. In saying all this I have also been guilty of the same thing a couple of years back, however it was quite accidental. To cap that one off, during our computer classes I was showing the class how to send multiple emails without showing other addresses when one person reminded me they still have the one I made a mistake on. OOPS!!. This problem is not exclusive to the VCC but also amongst companies as well. He showed several examples. His comment was “perhaps he should reply and say thank you for all the contacts”. The answer is to send multiple emails via your BCC ( blind carbo copy) contacts. By doing it this the recipients can only see their own email address. The others are not published. Therefore the email appears as if it is exclusive to them. All editors should be doing it this way and if you are not then you had better find out how to. If you are not sure who to ask, then ask me and I will try to help. With that little grizzle over lets praise our committee for all the work done this month. The new chairs have arrived and a fast working bee was called to assist unwrapping them. Each of the 120 chairs were individually wrapped and put in plastic bags. About 8 of us assembled and it took about two hours to unwrap and stack up. Then the old chairs were disposed of by Jack Anderson. He placed an advert in Trade Me, got replies and sold almost all of the chairs available and by the next time I was at the hall they were gone. “Well done Jack” Then on Monday morning Yvonne and I arrived to find 4 members flat out with 2 trailers cleaning out the parts shed and loading onto one trailer while the rubbish went on the other. Two well loaded trailers went their way. They then proceeded to a storage shed where a lot of parts had been donated to us for the parts shed and stored, loaded onto a trailer and brought back. It will be interesting to see what is in it all once it is sorted out. A great effort by Jim, Jack, Colin and Alastair. I had no takers for a second basic computer course so this coming month will go to a more advanced course. Those that know a bit but maybe want to freshen up a little. This course I intend to run on a forum system where we can all compare notes on how we all approach our projects on a computer. I feel we all can contribute and share information. And hopefully learn to do things better. Please contact me if you wish to attend. Details available at our meeting night. Last of all our AGM is coming up “soooo” if you are keen to help the club along then please let someone know. Don’t just sit back and wait. Paul

Our First Computer Class
by Paul Beck
April 13th saw an end to our first computer class at the clubrooms, attended by eight members which proved to be about as many as could be accommodated at one time. Their expertise ranged from moderate, to frightened to turn the computer on. However I am pleased to report that even those that knew something were quite surprised to find many areas that were weak. I myself always say, if you go to a course and only pick up one point you have learned something. Topics covered were emails, copy and paste, loading photos from camera and inserting, editing photos, making cards and Trade Me. A fairly full range of topics. At times I myself had to find out things so I could pass information on. Quite a bit of research was done in preparation beforehand. Sadly three of our members had to withdraw due to an accident or a pre-booked trip away. They will be accommodated somewhere else to catch up. The course was so successful that I have started another and have plans for a 3rd course. But that is to be later. To all the members who attended, while you are very grateful to have had the opportunity to have attended such a course, I say well done and I have enjoyed passing on a little knowledge to you. I hope you make the most of it as there is a new world awaiting. Paul Beck. 11
Mid week run to Bee NZ and Gordons Restorations by Mary Anderson A great day was had by those who attended the Katikati run organized by Bob and Margaret McGarva. I know Bob was awake very early listening to the rain prior to Cyclone Cook due that day, and wondering if anyone would be coming along. He and Margaret apparently had a little bet about how many would venture out. Both were very surprised and happy to see so many people (approximately 14 cars) arrive at our first stop – Bee NZ - Honey of New Zealand. The business has only been operating approx. one year and the very informative talk was given by the passionate owner David Hayes. He and his wife Julie built this brand new hi-spec honey processing facility. BeeNZ is a premium NZ honey exporter specialising in producing and exporting high quality honey product. The ladies had some retail therapy in the delightful shop. From there we drove to Haiku Park in the centre of Katikati to enjoy our coffee together, before driving to Trevor Gordon’s Restoration business. A Real Man’s Shed!!!! Trevor has approximately six cars under restoration including a Chrysler Valiant, late model Chev convertible, early Chev coupe, plus a Lincoln Zephyr which appears to be fully restored. There was a large veteran motor on the table of approx. 600 cu inches in the process of being restored for a LEA FRANCIS vehicle, yet to be built. Trevor is very interesting and an extremely busy person and our club members thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the projects in different stages of completion. From here we all went to the Fairview Golf Club for a lovely lunch and chat together. A great day indeed, and a big thank you to Bob and Margaret.

Has seal conditioners to stop or reduce leaks and anti wear additives. I have used this in my Triumphs for the past 14 years and have found that it works to reduce leaks and sticks to the rockers etc. when the vehicle is not being used. $65 for 5 litres. Valvoline Duragear 75W-85 Gear Oil GL4 semi synthetic. (GL4 oils have less sulphur and are getting harder to find) GL4 oils are specified for most classic cars that have bronze or brass synchro rings and thrust washers etc. This oil helps synchro rings grip, improves gear changes and won't wont affect brass or bronze parts. Model A OWNERS if you have a Laycock overdrive fitted - this is the oil for you as they have some brass and bronze parts in them and the Triumph 2000/2500 Factory Workshop manual specifies an EP70 oil on draining and refilling a manual gearbox and overdrive. $56 for 4 litres. These are both quality oils. Contact: Neal Lindsay. 07 5789579
