Well - last month I thought we were 'plain sailing' with a clean bill of health, but we have had a couple of 'glitches' of the worst kind. Warwick and Melva White, new members to our club went to the South Island to pick up a car to drive back. Melva unfortunately finished up in Christchurch hospital. What an awful experience for them to have. At the time of writing Melva was still in hospital, but we hope that she is recovering well and will soon be able to get back here and home. Club Captain Kaaren Smylie decided to do the 'light fantastic' (On top of her desk!!) and, 'Yes' you guessed it - finished up on the floor, breaking her legs in the fall (never was one to do things by half our Kaaren!!) seriously, though Kaaren is recuperating at home and we send her lots of love and a heap of those good vibes ..no dancing for a while tho'. Morrie Nottle has recently been in hospital he unfortunately had a stroke, he is home now but unable to drive. Morrie has been a member for a long time and always attended the meetings. Michael Steiner, suffered a bad accident on his tractor on the farm and has been taken to the Tauranga Hospital. No news as of yet of his injuries. I am sure all members wish everyone well and hope that all have a speedy recovery... Rita

Please. If you know of any members unwell please send details to Rita so she is able to respond on behalf of the club

Chairman’s Chat March 2017 My role in life has changed somewhat of late. As many of you know, my lovely wife, Kaaren, had a bad fall three weeks ago. She broke four bones in her right foot, and badly damaged her left knee. It seems the bones in her foot are mending nicely, but Kaaren can still not take any weight on her left leg due to the damaged knee, and is not allowed to take any weight on her right foot due to the bones healing, thus Kaaren is stuck in a wheel-chair, or bed, for some considerable time. She goes to have an MRI on the 30 th March, and then to the specialist on the 13th April, so by then we should know the full outcome. In the meantime, poor Kaaren is practically immobile, and stuck largely in her bedroom. After three week she is slowly working out ways to deal with it, and what is pleasing is she can now use her wheelie office chair to scoot slowly into her office, and amongst other matters continue with her Club Captains role, which she enjoys so much. In the meantime, I am chief cook and bottle washer, running up and down the stairs many time a day delivering meals, assisting with showering, doing the washing, making beds etc. I have not worked so hard for years. However, I am delighted to be able to do this for Kaaren, and she is an excellent patient, but I do look forward to her getting back on her feet again soon. And soon I am sure it will be; Kaaren is such a goer, and a person who would will not stay down for long. I know you all wish her a speedy recovery. On another note; in this issue of Klaxon is notice of our pending AGM in June. This is only 11 weeks away!! So we need to consider our line-up of officers for the new-year. It is pleasing that our industrious secretary, treasurer and Club Captain have all indicated they are willing to offer themselves for re-election next year, particularly as these roles take a lot of filling and each of them do their jobs so well. Most on the committee have also indicated they are prepared to continue, with the exception of Owen Smith, who has indicated he would like to stand down after many years on the committee. I thank Owen in advance for a job well done. What is concerning is no one at this stage has put their hand up for the chairperson’s role. Our constitution prescribes that three years is the longest period anyone can fill the role of chairperson which I think is a good thing as it is healthy for any club to have a change of leadership on a regular basis. This rule means that I must stand down as chairman this year, and are unable to offer myself for reelection. A number of our members, each of whom would make an excellent chairperson have indicated that they would be prepared to commit to the role in a few years time, but none that I have approached are unable to commit at this stage. The role of chairperson is a very rewarding one, a role that I have no regrets accepting. If you have any thoughts that such a role may be for you, or you consider some other member suitable, feel free to contact me or any other committee member to discuss it. Who knows if no one offers themselves for re-election prior to the AGM we may have to accept a nomination from the floor on AGM night as we did some years back. On that occasion the Club was in a similar predicament and nominations were called during the meeting. Clive Taylor was nominated and elected chairman on the spot, and made an excellent chairman I might add. Wishing you happy motoring and best wishes. Kind regards Jim Smylie

Mishaps can so easily happen… By Kaaren Smylie

Well I am really not sure where to begin, but to say I am very humbled by the generosity that has been showered upon me from the BOP Vintage Car Club members the past three weeks.

Since ‘my fall from grace’ (in a manner of speaking) off my office desk on the 9 th March, and no sadly I can’t confess to dancing on the desk…every day the Smylie doorbell has rung, and ‘Nurse Jim’ (I have to say he’s pretty damn good ladies, I could rent him out to you anytime) is greeted by a member or two standing there with either flowers, home baking, books or numerous other little goodies that can only but cheer up a girl’s long drawn out day. Poor old Jim his Fitbit watch has been working overtime lately, reminding him at the end of the day when he finally gets to sit down, that he has done well over the required 10,000 steps for the day. Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone kindness personified!

Needless to say with both legs out of action I have been unable of late to attend any of the fantastic club activities that you have been experiencing, however with our great club network many folks have been keeping me updated, and it sounds like you all have been having plenty of fun times! My goal is to attend this Friday nights movie (March 31) at the club rooms, our first for 2017 “To Kill a Mockingbird”, and then of course I want to attend the April monthly meeting. Jim has an excellent speaker lined up for the April meeting, I will send you all out a little reminder beforehand. It was most unfortunate due to the inclement weather conditions on 11thMarch the Greerton Vintage & Retro Fair had to be cancelled. The tremendous buy-in and support from the people of Tauranga the organizers received, has now enthused them to put a stake in the ground and plan to try and do this event again, the date will be 18 November 2017. Should there have to be a cancellation this time around, the organizers do have a Plan B folks! The word on the street is the BOP VCC are getting new chairs for the club rooms…All things being equal, members you will be sitting your derriere on new seats by the end of April woohoo!!! So members as I sign off for another month, I would like to say I am really looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the numerous events the Club calendar has on offer for April, albeit in my ‘chariot’.

Au Voir, safe motoring and I don’t recommend standing on desks Club Captain Kaaren

April Secretary Report: by Joe Scott

Hi Folks! Another busy month for our members. Shame about the Greerton Retro Fair being cancelled due to inclement weather (next year perhaps). A big thank you to Waipuna Hospice for providing us with the opportunity to take the patients in their care out for a ticky tour and a pleasant morning tea at the Te Puna Quarry. Ten cars turned up and for some it was an entirely new experience. The feedback was amazing. A big thank you to those who attended. Ensure you put your hand up next year. On another note the AGM is coming up in June and for those not aware of our constitution, the Chairman must stand down after 3 years. Jim has indicated that he would be happy to continue in another supportive roll. “What now,” it is now your opportunity to put your hand up to ensure that our club continues to be a success. Please feel free to contact any one of our committee members who will point you in the right direction. Trust me, the support you will receive from your fellow committee members will ensure a smooth transition into this important position. On a sad note our revered Club Captain Kaaren is operating from her new official office, (the bedroom) after having a serious fall and sustaining a number of injuries. Our thoughts are with you Kaaren. Get well soon. Just remember folks it may be time to put your hand up, “the old proverb” “You Reap what you Sow” still applies. Joe Scott Secretary.

We welcome the following new members

Keith and Margaret Mc Laughlin: They own a 1953 Sunbeam Talbot.

Welcome to the Vintage Car Club and we all look forward to meeting you and viewing your vehicles

All articles must be in writing and received PREFERABLY early in the month, the close off date being Wednesday following the committee meeting. Hi all, This month has been quite busy for me. Each Thursday morning I have been holding computer basic classes which I am getting good feedback from. Members attending vary from knowing absolutely nothing to semi skilled but have weak areas. While the majority of them have had small issues with their computers lacking task functions and having to get their computers attended to so they may continue, things have progressed moderately well. They are all keen so might continue a little longer to ingrain the functions into old brains. Progress is slow but steady however the course is meeting expectations so well done to them. At the very least in their words, “they now have the confidence to try things out and not be frightened of it. Full marks also to the committee who have backed me and I hope they feel it is a worthwhile project of benefit to our members. Thank you. This month also seems to have been filled with issues of members having health or accidents. Our long standing member Morrie Nottle has been reported having been in hospital after suffering from a stroke. Morrie has been well renowned for stepping up at meetings and questioning some action of the club and pinpointing an error in the bank statements etc. I have always thought if you could get anything past Norrie it was right to do. I only hope he has not suffered badly and we see him again at the club. Get well Morrie. Then there is our Kaaren. She has learned the hard way that humans were not meant to fly. After suffering a broken leg and a damaged knee in the other leg she has still tried to get around and again suffered the consequences of being impatient in the healing process. Get well soon Kaaren but please allow healing to take its course. Then there is Mike Steiner, who had an accident with his bulldozer while trying to tidy up his property for the club to visit in a few days. He has quite a story to tell of his fight for life. Mike is also related to Kaaren and has similar issues (I believe) in patience. Looking forward to having you back at computer class Mike. Get well and we hope for a speedy recovery. This year is Jim Smylie's final year as our Chairman. While our members are pondering over who his replacement will be it is also a reminder to myself that it is my third year at Klaxon. I still enjoy doing it and at times reflect back to where I took it over from Bryce. While the actual basic format remains the same as Bryce set up, I have set in place many changes. The main one being making Klaxon accessible by email. This has also extended to other clubs as well, a format that has been followed closely. We now receive many other magazines on line which I have made accessible by placing them on our cloud site. This being another change and now done by the VCC head office having a website accessible to all members. Progress was inevitable and is now catching up to modern systems available. The news today is full of how a Cyclone is hitting Queensland. Our Klaxon is also sent to a couple of clubs over that way. So from Kiwi Land we send over best wishes to our VCC brethren in Aussie and hope you have all escaped serious damage and that nobody was injured during a trying time. Finally, our club library is normally open on Monday mornings other than holidays. However from time to time Yvonne and myself have an emergency or other things to attend to and cannot make it. If you are coming specially in to the clubrooms please make sure we are going to be there by contacting us first. DO NOT JUST TURN UP and expect us to be there. Our contact is on the cover of Klaxon.

Mid-Week Run to Wingspan and Fish & Game Hatchery 15 th March Text by Alastair Jones. Photo’s by Deidre Rennie The nudge to my ribs woke me up and the question “know what today is” really got me going. “Special day dear I responded?” “Yeah right, get with it, it’s the run to Wingspan and the hatchery, are we going?” The hatchery sounded good and bought back memories of family holidays spent freedom camping at Mission Bay Taupo with trout caught from the hastily constructed collection of bits of wood that passed as a boat. The British Seagull must have caused the invention of “Start ya Bastard” and all the trout I ever caught casting a fly could be counted on the finger of one hand. Even though we did the last visit to Wingspan, I remembered the odd pukeko and hawk my mate and I had knocked off to get feathers to trade for flies from old Bruno Kemball at the “Red Spinner” at Hatepe. Clearly this was a chance to continue my redemption to all the abused raptors, so The Trout hatchery tanks create interest lunch was hurriedly put together and the “Elf” loaded to the plimsoll line cruised up to the high point of the Direct Rd where the lovely Singer Gazelle belonging to Trish and Tony Burgess caught us up. Arriving at the hatchery we were confronted by a solitary Murray Burt looking as concerned as we felt by the absence of other vehicles. They gradually arrived and at the suggestion of Barry Utting that a cup of coffee might warm up the proceedings, the smoko gear was broken out. Thus revived, the occupants of about 15 vehicles strolled up the gravel paths through the bush which offered protection to the elements very effectively judging by the lack of damage from the preceding days of record rainfall. The trout in the streams were friendly little chaps who delighted in providing an escort for us by darting back and forth. The first stop was a large building which housed the trout equivalent of a Used Car lot with every model of trout I’d never heard of, cruising tantalising close behind a piece of glass. One that caught my eye was the Brook Trout which are to be found in the Hinemaia Dam which supplies power to Taupo town. Bruno in his rich English brogue honed on the chalk streams of England, reckoned all you had to do was “wade out up to your tits in the water and Trout being clipped before release cast out heaps of line, and any mugs can catch them”. Well, I didn’t and this one was the first I’d been close to. There was also a sort of albino one which was blue with envy at the normal ones because it didn’t have any reproductive organs and was doomed to a very dull life. Someone said they were fin clipping up the track a bit, so with a bit of a spurt on I found most of the group hanging around two chaps in waders flashing little clippers in the sunlight. The shallow containers had hundreds of beautiful little trout that were having two fins removed in accordance with some arrangement that identified which year they were released.

10

Jan Burt was observed practising a most dexterous trout tickling display to great effect which indicated she had a very miss-spent youth around the Canterbury streams. The poor little blighters had been quietened down with the addition of some liquid anaesthetic to the water which I thought would be good to add to the tea urn before the next AGM so it goes smoothly. Anyway, they went down the slippery chute to the waiting water tanker which was off to some nearby lake without delay. Back in front of the admin. area, seating and tables were thoughtfully arranged in the brilliant sunshine close to a pond that was home to specimens of Oncorhynchus Mykiss that would have tested the most skilful of anglers. It was just the perfect place to have lunch and a laze on the grass was to pass up but there was pressing business just 150 meters back down the road at Wingspan. When you get to Wingspan, you are at the only place where the NZ falcon is reared and kept in captivity. The $20 note, probably not seen by many of my pensioner friends, features his proud silhouette. There was time before the flying display to get up and close to the many raptors behind wire netting enclosures that had proper trees and shrubs to provide natural cover. The chance to see a morpork (ruru) up close was particularly rewarding as was some barn-owls. 2pm was set down for “Hissan” to show what the falcon is capable of and the force the leather lure was hit with at the end of a swooping dive-bombing run was incredible. Great use was made of the breeze to climb effortlessly out of sight before swooping down time after time to “What!! Up there you say” grab the little bits of some unfortunate road-kill. His handler informed that falcons are aggressively territorial and only one can be let out at any given time. So, when “Hissan” was perched up on a high pole by the car-park I was extremely concerned there might be a strafing run by this 250gram fluff-ball at 150kms on Bob and Margaret McGarva’s stunning black XP Falcon, but I couldn’t find any white bomb-hits later. I would hesitate to name a highlight, but putting on a glove and having a magnificent bird peck away so close with eyes watching your every nerve move is something to treasure. I can honestly say, I had this beautiful “bird” just eating out of my hand! The handler told all of us that neither “love nor loyalty” was involved, just a greedy guts, as evidenced by a bulging crop. She also said “Hissan” was Arabic for horse and she was a male. There was one other small stuff-up; I took three great action shots of him on the A Morepork looking like he spent all night on the glove held by Deidre Rennie with her camera switched computer off. Not a good impression on a very new member. There was an extremely good explanation of how the eyes and neck vertebrae of birds of prey have adapted. By standing on a marked spot and looking at an eye-test chart you were supposed to be able to see what the falcon could at the same distance. Being perfectly honest I could hardly see the whole chart. When the flying display was over I noticed Alan Pram making a run from some distance for a grape-vine which had bunches of grapes well concealed by the leaves. As no one else had seen them either, can I assume that AP has a dose of falcon genes. Apparently Doug Noffke suggested the venues and Alan Pram put it all together. Thanks “Prammy”, an excellent day enjoyed by all who attended.

How we bought our 1966 Daimler V8 – Mark 2 by Bryce Strong First saw her on Trade Me, and liked the look of her. As it was located in the South Island (Fairlie) I phoned my friend Peter who lives there, and asked him to check it out. “Don’t need to” he said! It turned out that one of his friends owned the local garage, and had checked out the car, issued a WOF to it, taken it for a test drive, and had then tried to ‘steal it’ from the old owner, who resisted his low offer. So in August 2009 I telephoned the owner, negotiated a price, paid him electronically, and arranged for Peter to relocate the Dame to Peter’s garage - we never met him. A few weeks later Christine and I had arranged sufficient time off work to go and collect the car. In retrospect my first days itinerary was too hard – on a Wednesday we were up at 4:00am to catch an early plane to Christchurch, then took a rental car to Fairlie (2 1/2 hour drive), lunch with Peter and his wife Sandra (and an inspection of their beautiful new home) and then back to Ch-ch to drop off the rental, then onto Hanmer Springs which is a further 2+ hours drive - when we got in at 7:00pm both of us were very tired! We had a free day in Hanmer, and spent two hours in the beautiful hot pools. Left there at about 10:30am on the Friday, and travelled up the inland scenic route to Kaikoura, where we had lunch. We arrived in Blenheim at 4:00pm and stayed with our friends Trevor and Jo and their kids Charlotte and Matthew. We watched Charlotte play T ball in the morning, drove to Picton and caught the ferry to Wellington. Stayed in Wellington with our friends Christine and John at their home which had stunning Mana Harbour views. Sunday we were off to Wanganui, where we arrived just in time to go out for a 3 hour trip on the 'Waimarie' a restored steam paddle steamer which, as old boaties we really enjoyed. Stayed the night in Wanganui, and the next day explored the elevator in Durie Hill (built many years ago to attract people to buy land up the hill) and the tower on top of the hill (179 steps) where we had a great view! Then off to New Plymouth - visited the Pioneer Museum on the way, and arrived late on Monday night. The weather changed dramatically so we only visited Pukekura park (very pretty) then we left heading north. We stopped at Waitomo and did the caves - it was about 55 years ago that I was last there! We decided to stay the final night at Hamilton, and arrived home late on the Wednesday. We had a great trip, and the Dame ran very well all the way, starting superbly, very quiet running when warm, and achieved 23 mpg, which compares very well compared with the 13 mpg that the 1947 Dodge we had previously owned used to give us! About 5 years ago, while preparing to take the Dame for a run, I was slowly pouring water into the radiator, when I heard the sound of water running out below the engine – this was definitely not supposed to happen! On investigation I found that the exterior water jacket casting on one head had a hole approx. the size of a three penny piece – in the most difficult place to reach, on the back of the head. Not only was it impossible to see, but it was almost impossible to get at! To do so I had to remove the bonnet, remove the battery and remove the oil pressure pipe that runs

12

across the back of the head – and then lie amorously across the mudguard and engine to be able to feel the hole. Seeking a quick fix, I decided to buy, mix and insert into the hole some of the 2-part fiberglass epoxy sticks that are available. I was not confident that this would work, but was desperate enough to give it a try! After leaving it to dry, I reassembled everything, and refilled the radiator. Unbelievably, this solution lasted for over 4 year and many VCC Club Runs, including the Wanganui International. Amazing! With the passing of time I managed to buy a couple of spare heads for the Dame. They are not abundant, as many have deteriorated over time, and have suffered from over-zealous valve seat machining (as the seats are cast into the head). The Daimler Spare Parts Club has even molded and had cast their own heads, and are trialing them. Both heads needed work, so I had one welded and machined ($800.00) so I now had a replacement if needed in a hurry. After allowing my enthusiasm for the work involved to build over the years, I finally decided that a cylinder head overhaul was essential. With great assistance and advice from Don Wade, both heads were removed, the faulty head replaced, valves ground on both heads, and all valve guide lips were machined to a sharp edge (rather than leave the shallow lip that retains oil and guides it onto the valve stems). The removal and reinstatement of the exhaust manifolds were by far the most challenging part of the job, particularly on the steering box side, and demanded a tribute in the form of skinned knuckles and countless expletives! So, $2,000.00 plus later, the engine is now running well, the cold start oil smoke cloud (a Turner V8 characteristic) is much reduced, and we no longer have the spectre of an epoxy failure bringing our engine to a stop! The Daimler 2.5 and 4.5 V8 Daimler engine Edward Turner. At the age of 24 Edward Turner designed a 350 cc single motorcycle engine with overhead camshafts. By age 27 it was in a complete motorcycle, and the motor patented. This brought him to the attention of Ariel's Jack Sangster, who asked him to join Ariel Motorcycles. In 1931 the Ariel Square Four was released, designed by the now 30 year old Edward Turner. In 1936 Sangster bought Triumph Motorcycles, and made Turner the General Manager. The Triumph 500 cc Speed Twin, designed by Turner, came onto the market in 1937. In this era of the rigid rear motorcycle frame, he designed a "sprung hub" rear wheel, not released till 1948. In 1942 Turner walked out after a disagreement with Sangster, but returned in 1943, and by 1944, was Managing Director. In 1951 Sangster sold Triumph to the Birmingham Small Arms group (BSA), and joined their board. By 1956 Sangster was Chairman, and made Turner head of the automotive division. This then included Ariel, Triumph, and BSA motorcycles, as well as Daimler and Carbodies (London Taxicab manufacturers) The Daimler 2.5 & 4.5 litre V-8 engines were designed by Edward Turner in 1959 and used in several of the cars made by the British Daimler company in the 1950s and 1960s. After Daimler's merger with Jaguar in 1960 they were also used in some of the Jaguar saloons which were then badged as Daimlers. The lightweight 2.5 litre V8 had hemispherical heads made of aluminum alloy and closely resembling those in the Triumph motorcycle. ("Lightweight" is relative to similar engines of the period, but the engine would not be considered lightweight in today's world.) The two sizes of engine share similar external dimensions and design. They share the same bore spacing’s, and the one can be bolted in place of the other. The motor first publicly appeared in the Daimler Dart, but after Chrysler objected to use of that name, it was called the Daimler SP250, a shark nosed fiberglass bodied sports car aimed at the American market. The 2.5-litre motor, only thirty inches in length and developing 140 bhp (100 kW) @ 5,800 rpm, gave better

13

performance than Jaguar's own 2.4-litre DOHC in-line six, and after the 1960 merger the opportunity was taken to create an up-market Daimler V8 version of the Jaguar Mark 2. Between the years 1962 and 1969 17,620 Daimler/Jaguar V8s were built. Initially called the Daimler 2½ litre V8, it was later called the Daimler 250.
