chairman’s REPORT// By Steve Donovan

Hi all. By now you will all be into the Christmas Spirit. It is a time for reflection on the past year. This will be my last Christmas report as your chairman so it is approached with a bit of sadness. The Branch has had some wonderful time’s over the past 7 years. We have some lows but these have been over shadow by our on-going success. It was sad to be told by the family that Owen Adeane had passed away. It would been good to be part of his final farewell but the family had decided to make it a private funeral. Owen was the last of our founder members and we owe them all a debt of gratitude for starting this wonderful organisation in Hawke’s Bay. I recently spoke to a person who was a member in the Clive Hall days. In his opinion he could never have thought we would have the facilities we have today. A friend in need is a friend in deed and Derek Gordon was that to Owen. His time

January 2017

and effort in going and picking him up and taking him to some of our major functions and Monthly Senior morning tea’s was really commendable. In doing this shows the really camaraderie that can be achieved in the Club. This is becoming a major part of the Tuesday morning gets together. It started off to be a spares morning but is becoming more of a social gathering which is great. At times I think some of our National Body gets hung up on vehicle classes but to me a car is a car whatever you choose to drive as long as you have an interest in old cars that’s what matters. As I always say it is bums on seats that matter and we need more of them from time to time. Well it is time for me to say Merry Christmas to you all. Sadly it is a time to reflect on those who are not with us and members who are in poor health. Our thoughts go out to you. See you next year.

CLUB CAPTAIN/ secretary REPORT// Firstly, our best wishes to you all for the New Year. I am not sure where the last twelve months have gone, but unlike our cars the years seem to increase speed with age! I would like to thank you all for your support over the year and hope you have enjoyed what we have tried to give you. At times it has been a challenge and at times a breeze. The committee have been working well as a team to represent you but can only do so much, and we certainly need your support to keep the momentum going into the New Year. Over the year we have regretfully had to farewell some of our members and our thoughts are with those who will miss loved ones and dear friends, particularly at this time of the year. December has been an interesting month with those of us still working dealing with the approach of the “silly season” together with the juggle of what we willingly volunteered for! Really we started the month early with Novembers Derek’s Kitchen where we hosted 30 Bay of Plenty members as part of their Hawke’s Bay visit and I must pass on their thanks for a great evening and weekend. Their organiser, Bryce Strong was very appreciative of your efforts in welcoming them into our club, so well done to you all. We also had the Ladies Christmas Lunch with 26 of our ladies taking over “Three Doors Up” restaurant for what sounded like a very enjoyable lunch. Many thanks to Kay & Lesley for organising. Our monthly club run was incorporated into the “Children Christmas Party” and despite very low responses resulting in switch from a run & BBQ back to the traditional Club Rooms BBQ & activities. At the time of writing numbers have improved, the usual

By Ian Elmsly

volunteers are set ready to go and I am sure it will be a success. Many thanks to Steve Donovan for organising the day and the hard core volunteers who step up to the job. Our last club night of the year was the Auction Night and as usual Derek cleared his throat, viewed the room full of suckers (70 odd members) and proceeded to drive the auction, whipping the crowd into the odd frenzy of excitement as he encouraged bidding based on hidden expectations of a major purchase at a bargain price! Many thanks Derek, ably assisted by his trusty apprentices and with funds raised totalling $960.00 a great night, lots of fun and thanks to all who attended. Moving onto Secretary, this has been steady as she goes with the usual Art Deco correspondence taking most time, followed by reading riveting stuff from H/O, particularly those items relating to the Vero International Rally! Also moving into the New Year, we need a SECRETARY. Yes, I have filled the gap for six months and will continue to do so to get us through Art Deco to make it easy, BUT, to move forward a dedicated SECRETARY is required, particularly as I need to refocus on other things! So talk to me, ask me, I will happily answer any questions. In the meantime, HAVE A GREAT CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR. Enjoy what you have, don’t dwell on what you haven’t, enjoy every day, and learn something new (secretary’s job!) be happy! Drive carefully. Keep rocking! See you in the New Year.

mid week christmas run// Mid week Christmas Run. Seventeen cars, most decorated in tinsel, Santa ornaments and other glittering adornments, plus 34 people, many also in Santa or similar hats, took off at half minute intervals on the last Wednesday run of the year. This was a jaunt that went through Napier city, up Napier hill and over to Ahuriri, before taking Prebenson Drive out to the Puketapu Pub for lunch. It appears there were a few added variations to the written instruction sheet done by some, but at least everyone turned up for lunch!! First prize went to Ian & Lynn Skinner for the best decorated car and second prize to Barry & Glenis Tyson, a great effort everyone, thank you. We were all thankful for the cool Garden Bar area at the pub as the temperature reached 29 degrees and sadly old cars don’t have air con. Wishing a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all Helen & Peter Ball

ANNUAL HOMESTEAD RUN 2016// By Kay Elmsly

We started the morning at the Hastings Farmers Market starting with a look around at the stalls and a coffee as we did the circuit. Getting what was required for lunch or to take home for later, we headed back to the cars and waited for Graham & Esther Smith, the organisers for the day, to issue instructions and organise the dispatchers, Neil & Bronwyn Peacock and Ian Elmsly. Making sure that all entrants went off in an orderly fashion Club Captain Ian made sure they all had their instructions and suggested the odd one had last year’s version! Our first homestead visited was called Karamu. Originally built by J.D. Ormond hence being situated in Ormond Road Hastings and currently owned by Ian & Karola Brackenberry. Originally the property sat on 1300 acres but now rests on a smaller life style sized block. The beautiful oak trees that line Oak Avenue (originally called Ormond Road) were planted in 1874 and went through the centre of the property, from which they bred mainly Clydesdale horses and race horses. An interesting talk on the beginnings and what is happening to the property today was given by Karola. After looking and wandering around the grounds, the next set of instructions were handed out by our trusty dispatchers (yeah right!) as each vehicle was ushered out the tree lined drive and on to the next destination. The drive took us out into the countryside and up the Taihape Road to Matapiro Road and into the Driveway of our 2nd homestead. We were greeted by Percy the Emu (not sure if that was his name but it suited him) as he paraded up and down the fence line as the cars entered keeping a close watch on everyone. After parking the cars in the paddock we entered the Beautiful grounds of Matapiro Station for our lunch stop. Matapiro Station is currently owned by Ali & Grant Simonton. The property once covered 22,700 acres of land, but over the years has been carved up and disposed of, including some lots for World War 1 solider re-settlements. The original homestead was built near the river in

1876 before the new homestead was built and enlarged in 1910 at its current location, for the then owner Walter Shrimpton. The Simonton’s have put a huge amount of work into restoring the property and its grounds to how it is today. We all set up our picnic tables scattered throughout the lower grounds under the trees, where we enjoyed lunch and the odd glass of wine. A bonus treat appeared by way of a fly over by a 1929 Tiger Moth and a Gypsy Moth flown by Jan & Jerry Chisholm. The display was a real delight and we thank the pilots for a great display, very fitting with the old cars on the ground and the old planes in the air. After doing a couple of rounds over the property they were off into the distance and out of sight. Owners Ali & Grant where unable to be there on the day but neighbour (and VCC Club Member) Tony Conner was only too happy to step in and to give us a great talk about the property after lunch. The rest of the afternoon was spent looking through the downstairs area of the homestead and wandering around the grounds. Some of us ventured into the dark and mysterious grotto that had been built for the children of Walter Shrimpton as a memorial to their father. Something you don’t find on property’s today. A cannon that sat proudly front of stage near the house that has been kept in working order and has been fired on the odd occasion (so we were told) was getting plenty of attention from members who were checking it out!! The weather was good for us on the day and we thank Esther & Graham Smith for another very enjoyable time discovering Homesteads around the Hawkes Bay. It is wonderful that so many people open their doors for the HBVCC to come in to their homes for a visit each year. Yours truly, Magazine Editor. (Due to lack of space in the last edition of the “Mag”, photos and article on the homestead run had to wait and go into the January Edition)

HOOTERS// By Ana, Hooters

Hi Folks, The summer season is fast approaching and the visitors are starting to arrive, adding a special ambiance to our beautiful region. We have already had our first wedding of the season, first conference and a few cruise ships visiting and with over 40 more ships docking from now till March, which will certainly keep us on our toes! Before we head into this busy time I thought I should give you a little bit more on the history of Hooters: I guess that the progression of Hooters really started with my grandfather, he was an avid petrol head and built the UK’s first Kart Track, ‘Rye House’ in 1960, which is still known as the home of British Karting with a lot of the top drivers starting their careers there, such as Nigel Mansell and Lewis Hamilton. We all used to race karts, first my grandfather and grandmother then my dad and his brother and finally on to me and my cousins. As I mentioned previously, I went on to run the 3rd largest kart circuit in the UK and my cousin runs a racing team from Rye House, you could say it’s in the blood. My dad continued into hill climbs, sprints and rallying in cars like the Mini Cooper and Lotus Cortina although it was very clear that his passion was more with the early racers in the likes of Bentley’s and Bugatti’s and of course Lagonda! By the early 90’s he had acquired a collection of around 15 cars, with a particular interest in pre-war American vehicles. News travels fast and soon we were being asked by friends and family if we could supply a vehicle for a wedding, event or promotion and it was not only huge fun but a real treat for people to see these cars out and about and the hobby turned itself into a business….. Through rallying we met the late Philip Young, who was the main instigator of historic rallying in Europe, he mentioned that many overseas January 2017

competitors had started to show interest but the cost of shipping was quite high so ‘Hooters Rally Hire’ was also formed. Competitors could fly in from all over the world and collect a vehicle fully rally prepared and ready to go. Word started to get around and we were featured in several classic and vintage car magazines which led to an appearance on Top Gear. Well that was it, our business enquiries went through the roof and our fleet expanded to almost 40 cars, offering a huge variety for weddings, events and self-drive. As with all good things, it came to a head in 2001 when the foot and mouth epidemic hit and it seriously affected travel throughout Europe. We scaled back the business and whilst dad went into building race cars and racing all over the world, I got the travel bug and worked my way around the world as a mixologist (Cocktail Bartender) spending almost 4 years in Dublin, Ireland. In 2009 I came to New Zealand and instantly fell in love with Napier. I had never heard of the Art Deco celebrations and was amazed to find out about this fantastic weekend. The ‘parentage’ (as I have always referred to them) had decided to time a visit to their daughter with a car rally, a family standard at this point. Their itinerary didn’t include a stop in Napier till the Sunday evening. I tempted them to break away from the rally and we experienced our first Art Deco Weekend, much to the jealousy of the rest of the group who arrived only to find they had missed the celebrations. A mistake the organisers have not made since. The charm and allure of the beautiful city was just too much and we decided to make the move to New Zealand and of course sunny Napier! I know what you are all thinking: ‘What about the name?’ Well you’ll just have to wait for the next instalment to find out. Be Seeing you.
