CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Steve Donovan
As this will now be my final report after 7 years as your Chairman I would like to start with saying thanks to my Wife Pam who has been a tower of strength throughout some harrowing times. As a long-standing member said to me the other day he did not know why we stuck at it. Coming into this role I began to wonder if I had been set up and in a way I was. But I am proud to say that with the support of some very close college’s we achieved what many people tried to stop. The past few years have been a mile stone for this Branch and Building the Club Rooms was the best thing that was ever achieved in our history. To be able to hold the events we have now on our own shared park is magnificent. The Attendance at all activities is very encouraging. Sadly I have not been able to attend a Tuesday get together, maybe next year.
June 2017
The Dick Goodall auction was a real testament to the support given to member’s families. The hours of work put to this project was amazing and I am sure the family will be overwhelmed with the result. Many of these reports are about personal achievement but the last 7 years have been a Team effort and I hope going forward you will give your new Chairperson the support and encouragement that I have been afforded. To members who have had loved ones have pass away in the last year you have my deepest condolences. To members who have been in and out of Hospital I hope you are on the mend. Thank you, best of health for you all. Remember we do not live in the past but we can learn from it.
CLUB CAPTAIN/ SECRETARY REPORT// OK folks, this is my last report as Club Captain (and Secretary) for our calendar year. Yes, don’t get upset or distraught I will still be somewhere in the mix! With the time constraints on the MAG production this report is earlier than normal in its writing so we have yet to have the Ladies Run, but we have had a good month. The end of April saw us host All Black Coach Steve Hansen for a mix & mingle night and this went off a treat with sixty odd members & friends that came along. Steve gave and interesting talk on coaching and happily fielded questions and comments. Cameras were snapping, autographs collected and we now have a personally signed ball in our cabinet as a memento. We also had a second autographed ball that was auctioned off with a lucky visitor (name kept anonymous) going home with a great souvenir of the night. The Dick Goodall Auction held on the Hot Rod Swap meet Sunday was a great success and a tribute to Brian Taylor and his parts crew and Steve Trott’s attention to the finer details together with the band of helpers on the actual day. Dereks auctioneering skills came to the fore with

the support of Quentin de Groot (new owner of Kauri Auction House) as back up together with yours truly. The process flowed, we relieved many people of their cash and the excellent result would be a great help to the Goodall family. Well done team. We have our annual ladies run scheduled for Sunday 21st (to avoid Mother Day) and this promises to be another good day for the ladies. With the upcoming AGM we have received a number of nominations for the committee, including one for Secretary (yes!) and Chairman but if you are thinking about what you can do for your club don’t hesitate to volunteer!! On a serious note, I would like to thank you all for your support over the past three years that I have been Club Captain. I hope you have enjoyed the runs & gatherings we have managed to put on. Like all clubs we rely on volunteers and I believe we have a great core of trusty slaves who get in behind the committee to make things happen. So thank you all and I look forward to the next phase!!

MAY CLUB EVENTS// AUCTION DAY FOR THE GOODALL FAMILY STEVE HANSEN NIGHT Last month we had a great evening with Steve Hansen the All Black coach who gave up some of his precious time to come and mix and mingle with club members and family and friends. Thanks to Terry Elmsly & Euro City for bringing Steve along. With a beer in hand and a few nibbles to go with it Steve was happy to answer questions from the floor, regarding coaching and players. I’m sure we all learnt more about the game by the end of the evening.
200 plus lots of Automobila and related collectibles were auctioned off on the Sunday in conjunction with the 25th Hot Rod & Classic Car Festival. It attracted a lot of interest with people coming from all over the North Island to bid on some very collectible items. It took a huge effort from the team of people to get everything to auction day starting with the spares crew with the sorting of lots etc. to organising of the whole set up, auctioneers, and helpers on the day who made it all happen and flow smoothly. The end result for the Goodall family was very successful with just over $20,000 worth of items sold.
He was very interested in our club and thought we had great club rooms and was amazed that we had such a large spares dept. and an extensive library.
From the club thank you to all of you who put all their time into this (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE INCLUDING COMMITTEE MEMBERS). It was a big task but a rewarding one.
Steve signed two rugby balls for us on the night. One was auctioned off on the night and fetched $350. The bidders were very happy. The other sits proudly in our cabinet.
The club rooms were transformed from Auction room to club rooms again at the end of the day and the punters went away happy with their purchases.

MAY MID WEEK RUN/ By Barrie & Lyndsay Browne
Wednesday May 3rd and the sun was shining for the Ross Newland Memorial DIY BYO BBQ. Not a great turn out but those who did enjoy the day. All headed from the clubrooms to drive out via Pakowhai Road on through Twyford out on to Omahau and then to Omaranui Road passed last years DIY BYO BBQ spot at Puketapu Park, up Apley Road into Springfield and then Hedgeley Road back into Napier via Westshore to stop in Ahuriri. A visit was arranged at Little and Fox where we were met by the owner, Asher, who gave a great insight into what they do. Upholstery is their game and Asher, realizing four years ago, that this was something missing around these parts set up shop in this old wool store on West Quay. Fabrics from England and Europe are sourced and on display, the speciality is really old furniture, those old family pieces that need and deserve preserving. Obviously there is a lot of interest as the work is rolling in, so if you have that special something I suggest you get here and have a chat with the team, yes Asher ( seated ) has four or five ladies working with her. This run was as a memorial to Ross Newland who arranged the run last year and was adamant that we should look at doing something out of the ordinary, the result of course is the DIY BYO BBQ. June 2017
Following our visit to Little and Fox we drove a wee way to Waghorn St where the white shipping container had a display worth looking at, enough said. It was originally planned to make this place our BBQ stop as there are facilities behind the White Box that provide seating shelter and a BBQ but unfortunately the BBQ was out of order.
So the finish was moved to our apartment in Humber St. It was suggested by yours truly that this run should be an annual event, held in the month of April, with a challenge from someone of the previous year to plan the run and arrange the finish. Everyone present agreed so watch this space I have someone in mind. Happy driving then, Barrie & Lyndsay Browne.

HOOTERS// Ana @ Hooters Well, you can certainly feel that winter chill has arrived, hope you are all keeping nice and warm. The Hooters team is almost done for another season, we close our showroom to the public from 1st June and re-open again from 1st September. Still available for tours, weddings and events of course but other than that, it’s time to batten down the hatches and get on with those mounting ‘winter jobs’ This month has been eventful with the fantastic Meeanee Hot Rod and Classic Car Show that included the Auction which seemed to have drawn attention from all over New Zealand. We spoke to one chap that had flown down from Auckland for a single item, we were very glad for him when managed to win it too. We stepped away from the vintage cars this weekend and the Hooters team arrived in the Mokes, the Mini and the MGB, all with for sale signs on. We have decided that as much as we love the classics and sports cars, they are just not getting used enough so they need to find new homes whilst we concentrate on what we do best, the vintage fleet. Although if you fancy a fun car you can find them listed on trade me. My lovely Healey has been sold but very proud to say it’s staying local and has been purchased by the lovely LeeAnne from Charleston Chic. Love that she’s gone to a very worthy home.
June 2017
We had our vintage car photo booth in action for a conference at the Old Church and got some fantastic feedback, it appears everyone likes a bit of photo booth fun and with the help of Portable Paparazzi we can now fit the photo booth into any of our cars. Another great way to enjoy the vintage experience. The winter season’s weddings have started up and although it may be quite crisp out there, our stunning scenery will make the most amazing backdrop for those photos. It’s hardly surprising that winter weddings have really started to pick up. Wineries, log fires and beautiful lodges, Hawke’s Bay has it all. Well that’s it for another month, be seeing you…
