CHAIRMANS CHAT I'm holding the reins presently as Chairman John Whitcombe is touring the South Island for a few
weeks. It's interesting seeing just what comes across my desk that's VCC, motoring and motorsport related on a daily basis. One thing that's for sure is despite the holiday break, life with it's many tapestries does not take one. Sadly a number of funeral notices have been posted over this festive season. Rex Bentham, a
racing adversary of mine, then Gordon Pearce. On Xmas Day many would have heard the sad news of Owen Goldsmith (Goldie) passing away. On behalf of our branch I'd like to express our sincere condolences to all three of the families concerned. On a brighter note I've been circulating quite a bit and taking the time to talk to people and that’s been interesting. Former BOPVCC branch chairman Maurice Nottle coaxed me out of retirement to see to a number of jobs on his properties. One afternoon Maurice and I had a cup of tea, and he told of his involvement with motoring and car club activity over the years. Maurice was also a foundation member of the Tauranga Car Club more than 70 years ago. Back then they didn't have a Chairman, Secretary, Publicity Officer or any people with titles like that. Everyone just pitched in and organised car trials, hill climbs, socials and so on. The car club that Maurice was instrumental in forming still exists and has now morphed into a vibrant club called Bay Motorsport (Inc). My favourite story of the yarns that Maurice divulged concerned Clive Hulme, a VC holder from Pongakawa, asking what formalities that he had to follow to get his teen age son
named Denny to join up. Maurice pointed out to Clive that he had to sign a consent form if his son contested any local speed events as he was aged less than 21. Fast forward slightly less than 15 years and Denny Hulme went on to become the 1967 World F1 Champion. I also spent considerable in the Pits at the recent Historic Grand Prix Meeting at Taupo Motor
Sport Park. Usually I'm too busy racing so it was a real eye opener having the opportunity to just chat to people and observe all of the action behind the scenes. As well as chatting I was often asked to 'hold this and push a little on that' as some of the drivers and teams took advantage of my unemployment! The penny dropped though that weekend and I more than noticed how all of the drivers surround themselves with good people to form a close knit team. Close knit teams universally strive toward things that they value most, are all on the same page and trust each other implicitly. Even after doing all of those things success does not sometimes follow on that particular day - but at least a dedicated team can honestly say, 'Well, we
tried!' I feel clubs, organisations, businesses and families can learn much from this sort of approach in life concerning getting the job done. Take care out there and drive safely. Donn White

VEHICLE RESTORATION AWARDS 2023 A fine day which was a bit of a rarity this early summer for the Club Christmas Party and 2023 Vehicle Judging. There were three cars, all from the Morris/MG stable and from the oldest to newest spanned just less than 40 years.
Kevin Bridgemen’s 1973 MG Midget, still receiving some final touches on the day, was a restoration completed by Kevin and his son acquired from a now departed friend. A tidy car with all original type equipment but with a small amount of work to completion.
A Riley Elf restored by Donn White to a very high standard was most commendable and, as with Donn’s other BMC stablemates, every detail was “as is direct from the factory”. Paint labels of body colour, carpet type etc. Many Elf parts were sourced from wreckers’ yards and swap meets, which is not so easy for a Riley Elf made in relatively small numbers some 55 years ago.
Bob and Lyn Douglas took their first trip in their 1939 MG TB to the judging after a lengthy restoration. This TB has a Tickford Body (effectively a coach-built body by an company external to MG) and has been restored to “no expense spared” standard—to brand-new condition. The
colour scheme of cream/beige body, red roof topping and grey wheels makes this a stunner. The body fits and door closures for this car are as outstanding as the detail of the Tickford body. Many of the mechanical parts are new and the exhaust manifold has been plated to reflect heat build-up.
The award went to Bob and Lyn Doulas with the MG TB as a car of that standard has to win. Donn’s Elf got a special mention because it too scored highly in originality and very little to fault.
I have been judging vehicles for the Club for many years now and note the standard of cars is getting high indeed. Its now to the point where the judges need to look long and hard for faults.

RESTORATION OF THE YEAR 2023 Bob & Lyn Douglas’s MG TB Tickford 1939 – a potted history The MG factory manufactured a “standard” range of 2- and 4-seater sportscars from the company's inception in 1923, and also dabbled in variants to give the more discerning customer a point of difference. The early “T” range of 2-seater sports cars were manufactured from 1936 to 1939: TA’s in 1936, TB started in July 1939. By September Adolf Hitler had put an end to MG manufacture. It wasn't until late summer 1945 that production of the T types recommenced with the TC. Hence the TA’s and TB’s became a rare breed. Tickford Salmons operated out of Newport Pagnell; their specialist bodies were usually offered for many 4-seater marques of car, from the mundane to the exotic such as Daimler, Lancester, Aston Martin, Bentley. Their “signature” features were pram-iron hoods, better quality leather seats, carpeted interiors, deeper, more substantial doors, and body tubs. Tickford variants were also offered for MG's 4-seater VA, SA and WA ranges. Very few 2-seater MG Tickford bodied sports cars made it off the production line. They were thin on the ground in 1939 - and are even thinner now! Only 40 were manufactured before war stopped production. Way back in 1967, in the Old Country, Bob was offered a TB Tickford by a friend in the MGCC. He was the MGCC's T Type specialist who kept track of all T types from TA’s through to TF’s. We bought and used it for about 10 years and then decided to give it a rebuild, and as it happens many times, life got in the way. But we had a dream to get it ready for its 50 th birthday in 1989: this we achieved. In rebuilding it we uncovered its original colour of County Cream underneath various fittings. Bits of leather still attached to the seat base confirmed a red interior. The Tickford then featured in many MG shows & events, even winning a concourse at Beaulieu, an impressive wine cooler trophy being presented by Lord Montague. We campaigned the TB throughout the UK and all over Europe (under its own steam and instead of being on a car trailer, it pulled a camping trailer). Its final triumph was the Stelvio Pass. After moving to New Zealand in 2002 we decided after a few years to give it one more rebuild, especially since there are some excellent craftsmen around. Retirement was not on the agenda for the TB with numerous NZ MGCC events north and south. We are planning to use it to the MG 100 Years celebrations starting on the 13th January in Auckland and finishing in Napier. Then maybe it can put its feet up.

HUMOUR
A wise person once said:
1. We all love to spend money buying new clothes, but we never realize that the best moments in life are enjoyed without clothes. 2. Having a cold drink on a hot day with a few friends is nice but having a hot friend on a cold night after a few drinks -priceless.
3. Breaking News: Condoms don't guarantee safe sex anymore. A friend of mine was wearing one when he was shot dead by the woman's husband. 4. Arguing over a girl's bust size is like choosing between Molson, Heineken, Carlsberg and Budweiser. Men may state their preferences but will grab whatever is available.
5. A recent study found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than the men who mention it. 6. On average, an American man under 75 will have sex two to three times a week, whereas a Japanese man the same age will have sex only one or two times a year.
This is very upsetting news to most of my friends, as they had no idea they were Japanese.

RIP—Owen Goldsmith 12-12-1944—25-12-2023 Owen had been a Member of the BOP branch of the Vintage Car Club for 58 years. In 2016 he was awarded his 50 year badge. The Vintage Car Club both at a local and national level played a big part in Owen’s life. Owen was multi-talented and amongst other things built his own workshop buildings as well as doing full restorations of his historic vehicles. He did a craftsman’s job in repairing and restoring all facets of his cars. Mechanicals, engineering, painting, and upholstery. He was fortunate because his daily work was also his hobby. Some of the highlights of Owen and Margaret’s time with the club including the Hundred Year Tour of New Zealand in his big model AA truck towing the family caravan. Later Owen removed the caravan wheels and loaded it onto the truck itself, and he will be remembered throughout New Zealand for this! Owen took the family to the Rotorua International Vintage Rally in 1980 in their 1951 Daimler sedan. He also restored a 1952 Daimler Special Sports DB 18 which had been in a very sorry state when he got it. Another motoring highlight for Owen and Margaret was driving Route 66. On this trip they had the chance to ride and drive various vehicles, but the main event was driving the famous Route 66 in a Mustang. They drove over 1000 miles in the USA. In addition to these events Owen and Margaret were regular and very enthusiastic supporters of our local Club runs and events. Family, work and faith were important to Owen and he was a man of his word. He will be truly missed.

ROCKER COVER RACING RULES Welcome all you wannabe racers that would never get a place on the GRID for Mobility Scooters. There’s good news and you can let your creative and competitive juices loose and blow your mates wheels off without incurring a huge repair bill. Here’s how to go about having more fun than you can imagine with your overalls on and not creating any “carbon footprint” in the process.
First of all find a rocker cover (tappet cover) that is no longer than 360mm. BMC “A Series” are the fastest stock covers, but others that may fit the bill could be Escort, Viva etc. Fortunately Model A’s do not have a cover, so join the rest of us! Maximum width is 210 mm, height 210mm, and 4 wheels with a maximum dia. of 125 mm. Now, the important factor is weight. It can weigh no more than 3.5 kg all up. Some speed freaks reckon that being a bit lighter increases the acceleration rate but the racer tends to run out of “steam” quicker. So, long course, max. weight, short course a bit lighter may be the way to go. Ballast can be anything you choose, lead is popular and Colin Cavanagh cut up an old cast-iron fire grate for his “rocket”. We hope to involve a couple of other Clubs, so no obscene, derogatory comments or stickers will be permitted. The word is out that several of our “tender gender” have already started on designs that they reckon will leave the boys in their rear-vision mirrors.
We will use the track that was demonstrated last Club-Night which will allow two cars to run each heat, with the winner advancing to the next run-off until the fastest Rocker Cover is found. A check of what has been built in other places can be worth looking at on “YouTube” for inspiration if lacking in your repertoire.

Jill & Joe’s Truck—and the Super Cheap annual Calendar Jill Scott entered their Ford Model AA 1929 truck in the Super Cheap competition for vehicles that would qualify to be in
their annual Calendar. Low and behold it now appears in their new issue for the year

OUR PATRON ALASTAIR JONES 80TH BIRTHDAY Monday 15th January was AJ’s birthday and a small gathering of friends was held at the VCC Clubrooms to celebrate this milestone with Alastair and his family. Interesting and poignant was the attendance by Alvaro Acosta from Paraguay, who many years ago was an American Field Service student who stayed with AJ and Gwen for a year. They regarded him as another son! For the 87th birthday he flew 16 hours to New Zealand to be able to attend the function! That’s real friendship!
