Ammons Comment After fifty plus years working in various mechanical trades and owning many English cars and motorcycles equipped with Lucas Electrics I have no issue with Joseph Lucas products. Far shoddier products were made by Delco, Formoco and others. People like Jeremy Clarkson and others before him have made ill informed comment and parroted “Lucas Prince of Darkness” remarks. The more mature of us who lived most of their lives last century will recall it was not uncommon to be driving vehicles forty or fifty years old often on bad roads. Many had done thousands of miles with speedos disconnected from new to preserve retail value at trade in time. Apart from years of being subjected to rain, dust, condensation and such, electrical components were the most neglected item. Look through a hand book for an early vehicle and see the periods for service and lubrication of generators, distributors and starters, rarely was this ever done even in some workshops and lube bays and by the general motorist occasionally, often never. Yes I think Joseph would have a good case for deformation claims against many

Unleaded 91 Octane Petrol – Aus $1.50 Thats what we paid foe car fuel n a recent trip to Tasmania, with the most expensive being Aus $1.40 Jeannine and I were on our first trip to Tasmania with all our travel being previously arranged by our local travel agent – all but our accommodation which was sorted out in Hobart. We decided to travel up the east coast after an interesting visit to Port Arthur. Here we spent a couple of hours wandering around the ruins of a settlement that has a history going back to the early 1800’s. One can only guess the misery experienced by the convicts incarcerated there between 1830 – 70. Our first night was spent at Swansea, a seaside town populated with holiday makers. Getting on the road early we headed for St. Helens, taking in a glass bottom boat cruise along the way. Launceston (pop. Just over 200,000. Here we spent a couple of nights just out of the city at a suburb called Grindelwald which could best be described as a small slice of Switzerland – most intriguing. Visits to popular tourist sites, museums, Beaconsfield Mint, wetlands walk (with snakes), sea horse breeding etc completed our stay here. One of the main highlights of the trip, being interested in old motor vehicles, was our next stop at Boat Harbour where we visited a collection of mostly veteran cars owned by a local. This collection has been assembled over many years by Elayne and Francis Ransley. The collection is mainly made up of Early Fords, the oldest a 1903 Model A, During Ford’s centenary year in 2003 this vehicle was displayed at 58 locations around Australia, covering more than 28,000 kms in 11 months. Other Fords include a 1905 Model F, 1906 Model N, 1907 Model K, 1908 Model S and various Model T’s. Other makes include a 1904 Darracq, 1904 Cadillac, 1911 Brush, 1915 Cadillac V8 and a 1917 Oldsmobile. Jeannine commented that the collection was the best she had seen and I would agree. Our Tasmanian experience concluded with a night spend at Deloraine and then out to Hobart via the quicker inland route most of which was travelled on two lanes both ways and can be travelled at 110kms per hour which is also truck / passenger bus legal speed. Passing lanes are numerous and rejoining the main highway is well indicated. If you a looking for an interesting travel destination where the weather is not to hot or cold we could highly recommend Tasmania for your next overseas holiday.
