A Canadian Surprise

by Bar r y Bar nes

While touring inland British Columbia a 2 years ago we met a couple from Vancouver Island, whom we looked up later when we got to the Island. We kept in touch by email but missed seeing them last year as Marilyn was in Hong Kong and Ernie was at a BMW Rally in the States. We arranged our travel so we would be at their place once Ernie was back from this year’s BMW Rally in California and were pleased to take up their offer to stay the night at their lovely home in Nanoose Bay, tempted by a comment from Marilyn that Ernie had a surprise to show us. I bet he’s bought another BMW bike, I said to Carla even though he has a very nice R100RS from the 80s which he rode to California and I knew he had another another equally beautiful BMW under a cover in the garage, plus another one in the basement. After all that’s only 3 which is fairly moderate for an enthusiast especially a dyed-in-the-wool BMW man whose everyday car is a mid 90’s BMW which is just like new. So when we arrived I was pretty sure of what I would see. To my surprise, Ernie’s surprise was a mint 1959 Triumph TR3 in British Racing Green, left hand drive of course. Ernie has always wanted one from the days of his youth when he was unable to raise the funds to buy one he was after. He subsequently had an MGB in which he covered many miles but always hankered after a TR3. Then quite recently there was a car show in the local area and a friend alerted Ernie to the Triumph with a for sale sign on it. The car was in excellent order having been restored after a long period off the road after an accident damaged the nose cone. The owner had bought a TR6 and no longer needed the TR3 so it shortly became Ernie’s. When the nose cone was replaced the desirable narrow mouth type was able to be obtained rather than use the more readily available later wide mouth type, which was a feature particularly pleasing to Ernie. Some small jobs have been done to bring the vehicle totally up to Ernie’s high standard including removing the petrol tank to attend to a faulty fuel gauge and a smelly fuel seep around the fuel gauge mounting. Before heading off on our travels Ernie treated me to a ride around Nanoose Bay, and yes if the opportunity landed in my lap I would be happy to have one on my backside for a wart!

FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN Hi Everyone, I am writing this before going on the Mt. Cook Rally but will probably finish after the Rally. Not a lot has happened this last month but things are going to get busier in the coming weeks with the Motorcycle Bike Rally, the Safari Weekend, All American Weekend and the Veteran, Vintage & Commercial Run, so please come along and support these events where you can. You will also note in this issue of Tricar that we are going to run a Xmas B.B.Q so we can have a social get-together during the festive season. I hope you will make the effort to attend. The exterior lower parts of our Clubrooms needs painting and Ashley is organising volunteers to help finish the makeover of our rooms. If you can help with rolling a bit of paint on. Please let Ashley know. John Campbell and some of the Wednesday team, have been busy and have got the floor of our new garage painted, ready for the Club s sound system and club vehicles. Well done everyone. I have now been to the Hermitage and what a lovely day we had. We have been so lucky with the weather for the last two rallies. Good cars, good friends and good company. What more could you ask for, The Club is truly grateful for the efforts of Nola & Alistair Day & John Campbell in running this event Well done. I am pleased to say the meals at both the Hermitage and Top Hut were very good and good value. Thanks to all of you who came. I look forward to meeting you at some of our November events. Happy motoring, John ================================================== Hospice South Canterbury have sent a letter of thanks to the Club for the generous donation from the Monster Rally.

Notes from the Library by Barry Barnes Marchant Wigley Rutherford Best Challenge Trophy John McLachlan

Although I was away over the last couple of months, as confidently predicted, the Library functioned satisfactorily during this period. Thanks to all the borrowers. Whilst in London we visited Morden Hall Park, a National Trust property just a stroll away from our son Jonathan’s house. Many such properties sell donated books as a fundraiser. On asking I was shown a good number of car and motorcycle books. For about 13pounds I got half a dozen books in as new condition, which was about as many as I thought I could get into my luggage within the weight restrictions. They have been added to my personal collection meantime, but will end up in the Library ultimately. We also visited the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu where I was initially taken aback by how familiar many of the exhibits seemed, then realized that was because lots of them feature in various Vintage/Veteran books, which we have in the Library. Many great vehicles on display, though. The Palace House, the gardens and the Abbey and ruins are all worthy of a visit. It was rather poignant to learn that Lord Edward Montagu had passed away in August last year aged 89 and was buried in the family plot in the Abbey grounds. He was a contestant in the 1965 Haast Rally with his 1914 Prince Henry Vauxhall and I met him when he joined a group of Southland entrants having a few beers in the Wanaka Hotel. When touring in British Columbia, we frequently visited second hand book stores without buying much, but struck gold in a bookstore in Powell River where for $5, I acquired an as new manual for our 1980 Dodge Ram campervan which we have

used for touring over the last 3years and leave at our other overseas based son, Darren’s place. Darren has a 1984(?) Honda Shadow 500cc for which he has obtained Collector Plates which give a greatly reduced rate of the combined insurance/rego that applies in BC. One of the criteria is to be recorded as the owner of another registered vehicle which is our van! This by the way cost $390 for 3 months the minimum period for insurance renewal. He got the Honda out on the road in preparation for a long anticipated weekend trip with another Kiwi biking mate but lost the left hand side cover off it. I found the fairly shattered remains on the main highway just around the corner from his home but it’s not readily repairable and he would like to get a new one. Anyone got one? 2017 Haast Tour 4/10 February Entry forms have been distributed and the first entries have started rolling in. We ended up with 70 registrations and while we are aware of at least a couple already who will not now be entering, a good response is expected. Shannon and Norm will be modifying the Haast Rally Reunion spreadsheet for use with this event and the various other necessary tasks are under action. Entry forms and all the relevant information can be found on the Branch website, thanks to Shannon. Please note that if you are interested in this event entries close on 3 December. NO LATE ENTRIES!

The 61st Mt Cook Rally – by Shannon Stevenson Our annual trip to Alpine country came up quickly on the calendar, and after much preparation work, particularly by the Days, Campbell's, Foster's and supporters, it was outside our clubrooms on a sunny Labour weekend Saturday at 9am for 54 vehicles aged between 36 and over 100 years for a weekend's Waitaki and Mackenzie Country motoring – most notably over half of the entrants vehicles were built before 1940. With teas, coffees and lollies – placed by the organizers in everyone's packs – consumed, it was soon time to hit the road at staggered start times, over a choice of three routes, highways, sealed and country, involving gravel. For this year, the route to the Mackenzie was headed south towards the Waitaki Valley. After a tour of South Timaru, passing the Cemetery, Hospital and Botanic Gardens, it was out to Otipua, before crossing Brasells Bridge to reach Southburn and Gordons Valley. Approaching the Otaio Gorge region we soon met Alistair and Nola Day and their 1926 Dodge collecting our time trial scores. Soon after, we soon saw routes diverged – those on the sealed section were headed in direction of Bluecliffs, and for the adventurous few – myself included – a trip along the the gravel Back Line Road skirting the Hunter Hills. A few kilometres past the Otaio Gorge campsite I encountered a first mechanical issue of a participant vehicle – a loose exhaust under the Irving's Riley Elf, though a thumbs up from Darren Ladbrook meant all was well under control. With a few twists and turns through upper Esk Valley region, tarseal – and other participants - were encountered at Hunter, the route taking us into Waimate, in full swing for Waimate 50 weekend. Taking the assigned detours, a number of us soon found ourselves distracted by a booksale in the museum complex. Although the official lunchstop was Kurow, a number of members had meals prior – several vehicles encountered at the home of Ted's bottle at Waihao. It was at Waihao that the adventurous few branched off, west to the Waihaorunga valleys and up over the rugged, scenic and not-to-be missed Meyers Pass – albeit most suitable for 2wd vehicles as large as the Weir's 1953 Chevrolet Bel Air and as small as my 1980 Ford Escort. It was certainly a route rarely travelled, being a rutted single lane track in many parts with a number of ford crossings, closed gates, and tussock growing through the wheel tracks – the only motorist I encountered in the opposite direction was a friendly touring bike rider.

After the pass, it was a trip via Hakataramea to meet participants at Kurow that travelled via Ikawai – owing to the weather those shops selling ice-creams made a roaring trade. After Kurow, it was a trip up into Hydro Dam country, our route taking us across Aviemore and Benmore Dams and past many Caravans and campers – looking to have settled in for summer. With the dams traversed it was a clear run up to Omarama and Twizel, with participants taking a relaxed evening before our Sunday meet. With Sunday dawning, it was outside the Twizel A-Frame Chalet Motels at 10 for field tests – Alistair and Nola Day and John and Janet Campbell having several engaging field tests intended to stretch the mind – questions including the Goddard Trophy winner – Diane Ross being a participant; where the Campbell's Chevrolet was parked, and memorizing your VCC membership number. With brain cells stretched, it was a 29mph speed test outside Twizel, before hitting the road to Mt Cook – John and Marion Foster conducting a compulsory stop just before the Hermitage for the presenting of plaques. All entrants vehicles soon found pride of place in the gardens in front of the Hermitage – and gained plenty of attention from tourists and bystanders. One that received more than its fair share of attention was Graham Rae's 1925 Fiat 501C – with tie-rod issues, soon fixed by several phone calls between members, a hacksaw and a spare length of metal 'lying around'. Dinner was soon had by many at the Hermitage restaurant, and much time was taken inside the tourists shops, and 'Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine centre'. A retreat was soon made back to Twizel by most of us by mid afternoon, where a great evening's socializing, meal and prizegiving was had at the Top Hut – many stories shared between tables throughout the night – Monday being a day quietly returning home for many, a fair number taking the opposing route via Lake Tekapo. Thank you to the organizers for making this event an interesting one. Shannon Stevenson
