FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN Hi Everyone, Since I last wrote, we have had the Veteran, Vintage & Commercial Rally. Everyone on the rally had a good time and visited some interesting places. We were also favoured by good weather and some visitors from neighbouring Branches. Thanks must go to Grant Stewart for organising a great run. It’s great to have a real good turnout for these runs. Thanks everyone for your support. Next on our calendar was our Club’s Xmas B.B.Q dinner. It looked at one stage that it was not going to be a goer, but in the end and up to the night of the dinner , it was very worthwhile. A few people worked very hard in purchasing, preparing, serving the meal and cleaning up after and our thanks go to them for their efforts. The evening in my opinion, was a roaring success and well worth the effort. Thanks to the Wednesday Men’s group for the decorations The Swap Meet Committee has been working away in the background, making preparations for the next Swap Meet. I attend the meetings so I can be fully informed on how things are going. All looks good this year’s event. Some of you may have noticed, and they are worth a look, at the pictures of old businesses and other views that Grant Stewart has put up in the Clubrooms. Take time and have a look at these interesting photos. Thanks Grant for your efforts. Coming events for this busy month, are the Fairlie Parade, Ladies Rally, Night Trial and our Open Day. I look forward to seeing you at some or all of these events. Happy New Year and Happy motoring

NOTES FROM THE LIBRARY By Barry Barnes Over the last two months we have had a few more donations to the Library that I would like to acknowledge with thanks. Barry Smith has brought in some rare early material, 2 motorcycle magazines from 1932 and 1935 and from 1937 a copy of Modern Engineer. Rare old books included Manual of Motorcycle Maintenance covering US bikes 1920/21, and Modern Motorcycles Vols 1, 2 + 3 again covering 20s to 30s and written by AW Judge prolific technical of the times. Dave Lockhart has donated 5 books, Pictorial History of Cars, Book of Austin 10, Floyd Clymer 1921 catalogue, Automobile by Ralph Stein, and Spitfire. Grant Stewart has donated Classic Cars in NZ. At the Rotary book sale I picked up a number of books from the 1950s and 60s including Wheels around the world (1951) which covered events like the original Peking to Paris and New York to Paris, Citroen desert expeditions etc. Many of the original participants would still have been alive at the time the book was written. Another one was Bright Wheels Rolling (1954) by James Melton who was a famous opera singer and possibly the first celebrity old car collector at a time before the movement had really got off the ground in NZ. I also got a copy of From the Cockpit by Bruce McLaren. This was written in 1964. Hard to believe tis over 50 years ago since he was taking the NZ motor racing scene by storm and it was only a few more years before he would lose his life. 2017 HAAST TOUR: Cromwell to Hanmer Springs 4/10 February Entries have closed with a satisfying final number of 57 of which there is a good number from South Canterbury. Others will come from as far afield as Auckland and Invercargill with representation from most South Island branches. Hopefully, it will be a good trip. ================================================ WAIMATE WALLABY RUN 11th February, 2017 We would like to welcome new members W.J. Lawrence from Temuka & Mark Stevenson to our Club & look forward to seeing them at meetings & rallies. WELCOME.

Canterbury Branch VCC Vintage Rally November 19th 2016 Evelyn and I travelled up to Christchurch on Friday after work to join 3 other 1926 Buick Master 6 Owners on the rally that started from Cutler Park at 10am. The Rally attracted 50 entries. After the briefing , the field tests came first before setting off on the run that ended up at the Selwyn Huts. Along the way the time trial was completed plus more field test questions. The group gathered on the domain area for a leisurely lunch before setting off to home base to re coup before the evening meal & prize giving at Cutler Park at 6 pm. The big incentive for attending the rally was the opportunity of getting 4 1926 Master 6 Buicks together at the same time. The Earthquake didn’t deter the intrepid pair of Rob & Linda O’Keeffe who drove their Model 54 Roadster all the way down from Wanganui for the Rally & then headed home on Monday. The 3 others being Model 45 5 seat touring cars belonging to Graham Sibbald, Murray Trounson & Myself, Grahams car ( dark blue)was formerly owned by the Late Norm Skevington & has been a point of reference for several restorations including Murray’s(completed 1986) & mine (completed 2014). On the Sunday we met with 8 other NZ Buick Register Members at Rolleston & drove up to the Race-course hill Homestead just west of Darfield for another leisurely lunch in beautiful surroundings’, a good cross section of Buicks attended aged from 1926 to 1939 including the exquisite 1934 Phaeton belonging to Owen Frew. After lunch we all headed towards Christchurch to call at Mike Hanning’s home at West Melton where we caught the end of the Parish Picnic and joined a number of other Buicks of Mikes making it an excel-

SOUTH CANTERBURY VETERAN, VINTAGE & COMMERCIAL RALLY Sunday, November 27th, 2016 9.30 morning tea and welcomed by Grant Stewart & John Foster. First stop was Calibre Taxidermy at the end of Shaw Street. Here our hosts Jared & Ryan, showed us around including showing us how Trophy Heads were mounted. This was captivating to us all.

Then on the road to Pleasant Point to our next stop, Obsolete Iron, and Frocks & Shocks for the ladies. Obsolete Iron has a collection of early 1950s motor cross biked & Triumph motor cycles built for a land speed record attempt. It has two Triumph 675cc Daytona engines fitted into a homemade custom chrome moly frame, turbo charged and intercooled. In August 2015, it reached 221mph at Bonneville Salt Flats. They also have a 1933 V8 super charged Ford Coupe & a 1949 Ford single spinner coupe. On the road again around Waitohi, Temuka & Levels to the South Canterbury Traction Engine Club, where they have opened a new Museum, containing 33 vintage trucks. The trucks are from around South Canterbury, Cromwell & Oamaru. A 1925 Model T is the oldest vehicle and a 1972 Bedford the newest. The shed is 50 metres by 18 metres and cost about $300,000 to complete. After lunch, it was a short trip up the road to Timaru Airport to the South Canterbury Aviation Museum. It has vintage aircraft on display, microlights & display objects & archives relating to South Canterbury. Particular interest was of Richard Pearse, and wartime histories of local pilots that flew fighter aircrafy in WW2, along with the historic Control Tower site, which has a library and good views of the airfield. Thank you Grant, it was a good day with about 30 cars on the run. ROGER & BARBARA BAIRD

22nd Mini Nationals - Otago 2016 20th - 23rd October, 2016 Planning for this event hinged around the usual leave pass application being approved with the nominated conditions of including at least two of the kids. This being no problem as the boys Rhyan & Logan were keen for a weekend away too! Preparation of the car included investigation into why the mini always seemed to finish a run, down about a litre of water in the radiator. The usual checks found the radiator cap centre completely rusted around the thermos spring so a replacement may solve the problem, I thought. All packed up on the Friday morning, we set off for Dunedin in cloudy weather and a brief shower at the Waimate turnoff. Saw only one other mini on our trip & stopped at Palmerston for a lunch break. Boys needing a top up again. Onwards again over the Kilmog and turned off at Waitati to drive over Mt. Cargill for a fun drive when suddenly halted by temperature gauge showing a high reading & radiator cap squealing. Bonnet up and water all round engine bay and under bonnet. Checked everything - no obvious problems. Let the engine cool, start it up and poured 3 litres into the radiator to fill up. Seemed okay. Went beautifully again into Dunedin to my son’s Uni flat, where we became “scarfies” for the weekend staying with him Other flatmates away for the long break left room for us. Typical student flat! Six tenants - 4 boys & 2 girls - 27 empty toilet rolls lying on the toilet floor and check before you sit down for dirty meal plates with injury from a fork into ones seating equipment. Ouch!! Registration Friday night at the Leisure Lodge to pick up a very nice weekend Instruction pack with lots of goodies, to keep boys happy for 5 minutes. Met Lex Westoby & Sharon there, with Lex bringing his works Mini Traveller van to play in Saturday morning was an early start to wipe down the Mini, put another litre of water in the radiator again! Then meet in the Octagon for a Dhow & Shine, judging and Public display. Now my 1971 roundnose Mini is standard in every way except it has mini light mag wheels and three essential recording gauges in tandem, to the usual mini warning lamps. These 2 items put the car into Modified section, along with 40 or so highly modified cars sporting flares, wide wheels, disc brakes, racing seats, custom dash boards, graphic paint works, dual exhausts, replacement engines - all in the same class! Talk about David & Goliath. Approximately 100 vehicles were displayed. 25% would be the new shaped BMW minis, some just six years old.

Roundnose, Clubmans, Moles., Vans. Originals, unrestored, customised, it was an amazing display with good public interest, My boys were still snoring in bed when I left so they arrived later on a bus, just before lunchtime, of course.. In the afternoon, a drive out to Mosgiel to Taieri A. & P/ Showgrounds for a Grasskhand/Speed event for those who wished to take part. Some drivers enthusiastically put maximum effort in to there course events and it was interesting to watch in beautiful surroundings and pleasant weather. Logan decided to run forward and backwards one course, with a time of 39 seconds, beating many drivers’ times. Late afternoon, a finger food meal was provided for those who stayed on, with many going on the alternative Tiki Tour back to Dunedin. Many didn’t return, so there was a heap of food left, even after my boys ate their fill, so the caterer gave out food packs for anyone to take away. I was extremely popular upon returning to the Student flat with free food!! Sunday dawned fine but overcast and a firly stiff easterly blowing. We met at the Edgar Centre carpark in South Dunedin, to begin a navigational trial starting at 10.00 a.m.. Rhyan was asked by one entrant if he would navigate for him, as he was alone and from Auckland. The blind leading the ‘blind”! Well the challenge of this event proved to be an incredible mission. With 3 separate route groups provided to keep traffic congestion down, it exasperated the difficulty to follow the route, answer many questions, deal with traffic and try to keep on course. As you may know, Dunedin intersections have many multi road choices and as the instructions had few - if any - street names to check your choice, confusion reigned. This turned out to be a 2 hour drive around the Ciy followed by another 2 hour drive in the rural areas, visiting places like Mosgiel, Outram, Lake Waihola and the Taieri River mouth, that was our luncheon venue. We arrived about 2 p.m. where the local V.C.C, ran further Field tests, so it was another 30 minutes before time was had for a lunch break. The local School Committee provided and excellent BBQ meal with very good options.. Some cars finished the rally at 4.30 p.m. and many were pretty upset at poorly prepared instructions and the distance to be covered. We were told to ensure our cars had a full tank when starting, Rhyan’s ride was one of the last cars to arrive, but they saw a lot of the countryside! It was quite a task to get back to Dunedin, change and drive to the

Otago Golf Club for Dinner and Prizegiving by 6.00 p.m.. Jereme, my oldest boy and Uni student accompanied us to the dinner too. More hungry mouths to feed. This was an excellent venue, high above Dunedin City, views amazing, decorations in yellow and blue and very well set out. The buffet meal was tops and the company very welcoming. We had a great time. No awards won except Lex Westoby won an award or two, I think. Great night out. Monday, we packed up late afternoon to set out for home in grey weather but hoped most of the holiday traffic would be ahead of us. Put another litre of water into the radiator and set off about 5 p.m.. All went well till Alma, just short of Oamaru. Temperature gauge went off, so stopped to investigate. Raining by now, isn’t it always the way! Still no obvious problem found but getting concerned now. Another 3 litre water top-up and back on the road. Just before the Waitaki Bridge, same thing happened again! Not chancing any further damage, I requested a rescue from Murray Kitchen and was towed home. In the dark by now, raining steadily, being towed at 80 k, medium traffic, was testing stuff. Home by 9.30 with car in his garage and a change of loan vehicle, we made it home by 10.00 p.m.. With sergeant major in bed, I wasn’t charged with AWOL till next day. The following autopsy on the Mini diagnosed a hole in the underside of the water pump aggravated by the new radiator cap and because of heating problems, the head gasket was blown in 2 places. No cracks or burnt valves and now back together again, running as it should. GRANT MITCHELL & BOYS =================================================
