Hi Everyone

A Huge Thanks to Our Amazing Parking Volunteers!

A massive shoutout to the dedicated team of volunteers who took on the challenge of car parking duties and absolutely nailed it!

Your hard work, enthusiasm, and teamwork not only helped raise an incredible $9,000 for the branch coffers but also ensured everything ran smoothly for the speedway crowd.

By all accounts, you had a tremendously good time doing it proving that even the toughest jobs can be rewarding with the right crew. The speedway pundits were full of praise for a job well done, and we couldn’t agree more.

To each and every one of you who lent a hand thank you! Your efforts make all the difference, and we’re lucky to have such a fantastic team.

Kind Regards Ray

CHATTER FROM THE CHAIR.

A big welcome into Autumn to all our Branch members.

Time to have a final run in our old favourites before the weather cools and many of us lock them away for the winter! Time for a bit of careful checking, testing and maintaining! Don’t forget to update your vehicle logbook with everything you do, when you do it, at what mileage and how much does it cost!

These are the sorts of questions we are being asked as we push towards the issuing of 12 month WOFs for our over 40 year old classics, and if the evidence is recorded it will be easier to help push this legislation over the line! At the Exec, Gary Jackson, FOMC, addressed us on progress following many meetings recently and things are looking very positive.... have you helped by completing the online survey yet?

I checked my logbooks for the 65 Fiat for my own submission, 3 300 miles in the last 12 months, with the 56 Hillman Californian only covering 1 200 mile since March 2024! Two of our collection only travelling 4 500 miles in a year between them... or about 1500km each between WOFs! Have you checked your records... these will help in making your submission!

The same weekend as our Swap Meet, Joanne, Ray and myself attended the National Executive meeting in Christchurch with many positive outcomes! Besides the good news on the WOF progress, the members unanimously endorsed the Clubs new Constitution, in it’s recently upgraded form, and this will now go to our August AGM in Invercargill for the final ratification by member.

Ray also addressed the Delegates on the progress of the organization of the next VERO FOHM, in March 2026. Members from around our 36 Branches said they will be here... will YOU be?

We have now purchased a new National Office building, with a large adjoining archives facility, and Linda, Karen and our archivist, Don, will shortly be moving in! Several in ChCh enjoyed a drive passed of the new property situated in Main North Rd, Papanui about

midway between the CBDand Harewood airport! The opinions are all very positive, with lots of car parks for visitors!

I was disappointed to miss our Annual Swap Meet, but I knew we had a capable team managing everything. Unfortunately, the weather Gods weren’t kind on the day, with cool, overcast conditions and numbers down through the gate. It was pleasing to see that Malcolm and Lloyd held a debrief the next week, and a number of points were raised that will be addressed before our 2026 Swap Meet. A big thank you to them for coordinating their teams. Also to Dave and Yvonne Bell for site marking and the production of a detailed planner for future guidelines! Thnx to Rex Smith for staying over as Security and being on deck with the site plan to welcome the site holders in the dark on Sat!

On your behalf, I would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way, in the preceeding few months, preparing and setting up the site on the Friday, and assisting on the day. I believe we were a bit short of staff on the Sat, with a few people not showing up as they had promised! This is very unfair and loads a lot of extra work on to others... there were some over worked members on the day.... a huge THANK YOU to them for carrying the day to a profitable conclusion of over $6000, I believe!

I would especially like to thank Wayne Price and Ron Johnston, assisted by Tony, for setting up and manning our Club stall. Also thank you, to the several members who donated goods to sell which all added a few extra dollars to our Club coffers! These dollars we desperately need to keep our Branch functioning and to hold our Branch levies. I sometimes wonder how easy it would be to give those who regularly contribute to your Branch a discount on their subs, whilst we charge those who aren’t around when the manpower is needed, a few dollars more! Food for future thought!

Talking of ‘future thought’ the 2026 Swap Meet date has been set for MAY. This is to avoid our hosting of the next VERO Int Rally in March next year. By May the weather will be cooler and we may have to rethink our format. Will we need more shelter, more heating, more hot food... or can we find an indoor venue at that time of the year? Are there large indoor sheds empty in May? All ideas welcome as we need your input to plan for any contingencies as we aim to keep our Swap Meets running every year and subsidizing our Branch running expenses!

Its now only a little over 2 months until our Branch AGM on the 28th JUNE, incorporating our RESTORATION of the YEAR and our PRIDE of OWNERSHIP display. I know of several folk ‘thinking about’ entering their vehicles... but there’s always room for lots more! Please let one of the Club Captains team know if you are entering, or advise either myself or Joanne.

For several years now, we have been fortunate to have had a very stable and hard working Committee, all doing more than their share to make things happen here in Nelson for you!

Most are tired! Several need ‘timeout’ with their partners, and families ,and a couple are not in good health! Your Branch needs YOU! Please, we need additional members to join your committee and to help spread the work load.... PLEASE, WE NEED ADDITIONAL MEMBERS TO JOIN THE COMMITTEE to help spread the work load!!!

Joanne, as your incoming new Chairperson, intends to hit the ground running, and needs a full Club Captain’s team, full committee, chairs for sub committees, and all our other supporters in place at the beginning of her term to provide a full range of activities, runs, tours, speakers and the social activities that YOU, the member, enjoys! How can you help...:? Please pop the AGM in your diary now!

A steady number of new members are now joining us each month.... are we welcoming them? Our Secretary, John Barker and Lesley have been contacting them, ensuring they have received the CC and are aware of coming activities. I have been pleased to see members wearing their name badges and introducing themselves to these new members at our morning teas.... thank you! But what of our new members still working and not attending our mid week runs? Are we welcoming them? Do we need to do more to include them in our activities?

Wasn’t it great to see such a good turn out of Club cars at the Top of the South Car Display at Richmond last month. Over 30 Club vehicles were present with members flying the flags and handing out VCC information! A couple of our cars even gained public choice awards! A handful of cars also attended the Murchison Show, the Moutere Hop and the West Coast Branches SCENICLAND RALLY recently.

It was made very clear at our recent Exec meeting in CHCH that the success of individual Branches is very dependent on

how we network and work in with our neighbouring Branches, and this will be even more important under the upgraded Constitution.

Our next Inter branch activity will be the 12 July SNOW RUN and shortly afterwards on 12th-14th September the Nelson organized BIENNIAL RALLY this year based in REEFTON, with the help of local members. I hope that our events are also supported by members from Marlborough, West Coast, Canty, Banks Pens, Ashburton and even South Canty. Basing activities more centrally make it easier for folks from other Branches to attend, use roads less often travelled ,and support our smaller rural communities! I hope you will join us?

[Snow run details soon... I am in discussions with Marlborough about possibly their hosting it again this year, to try and re establish the alternation between the Snow Run and the Biennial, possibly lost during the interruptions of Covid.] Watch this space in May!

A few dates coming up when we can help support these smaller communities and charities...

JUNE Sat 21st. REEFTON CAR SHOW, Gold coin donation for local charities.

Motor Camp/Rec Park 10am – 2pm. No registration, roll up on the day!

AUGUST SUN 28th. VCC NATIONAL DAY, raising funds for the Cancer Society.

SEPT 12th – 14th. BIENNIAL RALLY, based on Reefton. [Fri night evening planned in MURCH!]

OCTOBER SAT 4th. MURCHISON CAR SHOW. 10am – 2pm, Rec Park. Gold Coin donation to NBS Rescue helicopter Appeal. No registration, roll up on the day and stay the weekend!

NOVEMBER 8th- 10th, Nelson Hosted COAST2COAST [C2C] Tour. Ask Joanne Hoffman or Rex Smith for details and plan to join us now! Logistically, numbers will be limited! Be Great to see you and your Whanau join us!

And to finish...

* Death is still the number one killer in the World!

* Life is sexually transmitted!

* Men have two motivations, hunger and a bit of hanky panky! Usually they can’t tell them apart so if his eyes start to gleam, make him a sandwich!

* Health nuts will feel silly one day, lying in hospital dying of nothing!

* We should take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism!

* Life is like a jar of jalapeno peppers, what you do today may be a burning issue tomorrow!

On those positive notes... hop out to the shed, polish them up and we’ll see you at the AGM and vehicle display day on SAT 28th JUNE 2025!

Safe and happy motoring, MIKE BRYAN.

Swap Meet

The Nelson Branch of the Vinrage Car Club acknowledges and thanks the following businesses for their supporting avdvertisements in the Nelson and Tasman Weeklies, which promoted the Swapmeet in the 5th March Editions: They are

Quail Valley ( Free Range)

RRR - Rodz, Rides and RestorationsLtd

Autofucus

Formlpy NZ ltd

Shone & Shirley Funeral Directors

On behalf of the Swap Meet Committee, I would like to thank the Nelson Club Members who helped with the Swapmeet set up, running things on the day and packing up following. This was very much appreciated.

Please note the next years Swap meet will be held at the later date of Saturday the 9th May 2026.

The reason for this is:

Many of the Nelson Branch members are committed to assisting the VCC National body to run the 2026 VERO International Festival of Historic Motoring in Nelson - it was considered it would be wise to hold the Swaqp meet at the later date rather than break the annual continuity of the event

Another great turnout. Many Thanks to Bill & John in the kitchen. Good to see Wayne having a break from kitchen duties. Happy birthday to Tony Hanson, Thank you from everyone for the savouries.

There were a lot of notices given out as Swap meet was only a couple of sleeps away. Thank you to all who helped at the Swap meet working bee on this day.

Thank you also to Darcy & Jill for organising the mystery lunch run which ended up at Founders. Darcy organised the North road gate to be open so we could drive our cars straight in to Founders. This gave the tourists an added bonus who were enjoying the history of Nelson.

Saturday 22 Top of The South Motor Show

Over 400 cars & motorbikes attended with a great turnout

from VCC. Trevor Carson’s beautiful veteran Rover won people’s choice. Well deserved.

March 1st Rai Valley A & P Show

If anyone attended, we hope you had fun. This wee show usually draws a good crowd.

Sat 8th Swap Meet

A steady number came through the gates looking for a bargain or something specific. The weather was cloudy for most of the morning but when the sun came out the ice-cream van did very well. The grounds looked great, we had a good number of display cars & people loved the sausage sizzles.

Thank you Lloyd & Gwen for supplying your barbecue trailer & manning it, Thank you John Appleman Chef extraordinaire for pulling the tongs out of your back pocket & cooking up a storm. Thank you to the Clarke family for supplying a barbecue at the end of the grounds, manning it & keeping the sausages & eggs cranking. All in all a good swap meet but we can always do things better.

Thursday 13th Club Night

About 20 of us met at the Old Modellers pond at Tahunanui bringing our takeaways & old vehicles. Perfect venue & evening for a low-key chat & get together. We had a couple of American visitors with us who thoroughly enjoyed a ride in Bells JAC & the Thompsons model T. Thank you Yvonne & Rob.

Saturday 15 & Sunday 16 Speedway Parking

Many Thanks to the organisers Paul & Dianne & John & Leslie for the evening meals. There were a good number of

Club member helpers and generally things ran pretty smoothly. It is great to have a chat & catch up over dinner. Some of us also got to see a little of the racing. That’s it for speedway car parking until later in the year. We have added quite a few dollars in the purse for the running of our club.

Wednesday 19th Morning Tea

A slightly smaller turnout but enjoyable all the same. Many thanks John and Malcolm who did the kitchen duties this week, always appreciated. At this stage we have many gapes on the clipboard for up coming morning tea kitchen helpers.

Saturday 22 Scenicland Rally

A small group from Nelson did the trip this year. The coast turned on great weather for the day. This year the Rally was named the 15 Rivers Rally which was also the quiz, find 15 rivers that you cross. Simple but with so much to see & do along the way it sorted out the sight seers from the quizzers.
