Printed Mag Available

Printed copies of our monthly magazine, Taupo Torque, are now available from Copy Solutions in Taupo!

We email the magazine to Copy Solutions each month, so if you would like a copy, you can visit Copy Solutions in Taupo and purchase one of the following 3 options:

Black and White A5 Booklet

Printing Tips

Although you can print this magazine to A4 (either actual size or scaled to A4), this magazine has been set up in A5 format. This allows you to print 2 pages up on an A4 or even a booklet if your printer supports it.

If you open the magazine file in Acrobat Reader, and select file>print, under Page Size and Handling (see image below), you can print multiple pages per sheet. Click File>Print>Multiple>Pages per sheet> 2

If your printer supports printing both sides of the paper, you can also print a ‘Booklet’. Which allows you to print, then staple and fold up into an A5 magazine.

Chairman’s Report

Eric Foley

Chairman’s Report for January 2024

A belated Happy New Year to you all. I hope the festive season was kind to you and that, where possible, you spent some time with your family. I was fortunate enough to have both of our children and grandchildren here for Christmas, which was lovely. New Year was celebrated in New Plymouth at the Light Festival. It really was worth the visit with some amazing light displays. Unfortunately the weather was not the best but we coped. Not quite the Sydney Light Festival standard but still very good.

Breakfast at Lacus Café on the first Sunday of each month is a popular event, with a fairly steady group of about 30 fronting up each month. With the holiday season on us and many members child-minding. Numbers are usually down at this time of the year. The Rotorua Car Show, which is normally a very popular event, coincided with Auckland Anniversary Weekend. With members either away or otherwise engaged with family, numbers were down. The other influencing factor was the weather, which wasn’t at its best in January. Never mind, maybe next year.

Looking ahead, we will need to adopt some changes to our branch constitution in the next month or two. Concurrently, our national body is going through a very thorough review in an attempt to update its constitution. The current one is about 40 years old and does not comply with the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. However, there are branches who are totally opposed to any change and are making things difficult for VCC NZ.

While I am well aware that our AGM is some months away (May 2025), members need to put their thinking caps on and be prepared to stand for office. Elaine has indicated that she will not be standing for office this year. She has done a very good job during her tenure. The Secretarial role is important, and we are hoping someone will put their hand up to take over this job. It is essential to the smooth running of the club but is not hugely time-consuming. Having done the job in the past, my memory has it that 2-3 hours per week (on average) is sufficient (although Elaine may have different views on this comment )

I hope you all support us at the Open Day we have planned at The Landing on Sunday 16th February. In the interim we have BBQ at the club rooms on Wednesday 12th. This is usually a well-attended function with the club proving the protein and members bringing a salad or dessert. Here’s hoping for a fine night.

Until then, take care out there

Eric

Taupo Country Roads RallySaturday 15 March 2025

Save the date everyone. We are once again running Taupo’s annual national rally.

Put this date in your diaries!

This year Murray Stanley has kindly offered be our Rally Director and has already plotted the course and the events committee are well underway to make this an interesting day for you.

What is this rally all about? For those who don’t know, this date is our club’s chance to host entries from out of town to join our own members in a fun day of motoring, mix and mingle and meet like minded people from around the country. The vehicle classes are listed below.

In the competitive section vehicles are classified in the year of manufacture:

• Veteran Vehicles (VET)

- Motor Vehicles constructed prior to 31 December 1918.

• Vintage Vehicles (VV)

- Motor Vehicles constructed between 1 January 1919 and 31 December 1931.

• Post Vintage Vehicles (PVV)

- Motor Vehicles constructed between 1 January 1932 and 31 December 1945.

• Post War Vehicles (PWV)

- Motor Vehicles constructed between 1 January 1946 and 31 December 1960.

• Post 1960 Vehicles (P60V)

- Motor Vehicles constructed between 1st January 1961 and 31st December 1980, such vehicles to be known as Post 1960 Vehicles

• Post 1980 Vehicles (P80V)

- Motor Vehicles constructed on or after the 1st January 1981 provided that no vehicle is deemed eligible for this category until the day immedi-

ately following the 30th anniversary of its original date of construction as determined in accordance with Section 2 of the Club Vehicle Technical Code, such vehicles to be known as Post 1980 Vehicles. (Refer by-laws)

The above classes are eligible for prizes. To enter these one member of the vehicle must be a full member of the NZVCC.

As stated above we will also run a non-competitive class called touring section for those who wish to participate with no pressure and for those who are not full members of the NZVCC. This does not negate you from receiving spot prizes.

It is recommended all entrants have a navigator to make it safer to travel the course. If you have a car and need a navigator let the organisers know or ask around, and you don’t have a vehicle available or running we can put you with someone who does. If you are a full member of the NZVCC your co-entrant does not have to be a club member.

Your committee wants the day to be fun and successful. We encourage you to support our club hopefully by entering and joining our national entrants. Talk to members you know from other clubs and encourage them to join us.

Entry forms are already circulating BUT please note that the early ones have our old box number on it, which we no longer have. If anyone is wanting to post an entry form it needs to go to 33 AC Baths Avenue, Taupo 3330.

Of note – there are no gravel roads on during the competitive portions of the rally. There is one short piece of 1km which is on the scenic trip back into town. If you do not wish to travel on gravel then you can elect to take a more direct return route. This will not affect your points tally.

If you have any questions give Heather a ring on 027 232 4866 or Murray, Rally Director on 021 352 333.

GUEST INDEMNITY WAIVER ADVICE

The organisers of this event draw the attention of participants of the following rule regarding eligibility:

Events should be open to vehicles as defined by Club Rules – All vehicles accepted must be entered by a financial member of the Club. Either the owner of the vehicle or the driver on the day shall be a member of the Club, or if resident overseas, a member of a recognised overseas organisation.

This means that if you are NOT a member of the Vintage Car Club of NZ Inc and you wish to drive in this event in a vehicle owned by a club member, we welcome you as a guest in a non-competitive capacity and because the Club’s public liability insurance only covers incidents involving Club members, we ask that you sign the indemnity waiver below.

INDEMNITY WAIVER

I agree not to hold liable the Vintage Car Club of NZ Inc, Taupo Branch, it’s members, officials or representatives, for any loss, however caused, or for the consequences of any action by an official member or representative of the Vintage Car Club of NZ Inc, and accept that my participation in this event is as a non-competitive guest only and I do so entirely at my own risk.

You agree as a condition of entering the event that the Taupo Vintage Car Club has the right to cancel the rally in the event it considers, in its sole discretion, that NZ Government Covid19 restrictions will or will likely adversely affect the feasibility of the rally to the point that holding the rally is not feasible, financially or otherwise. In such an event, Taupo Vintage Car Club will endeavour to refund entry fees that have been paid but may withhold some or all of such paid entry fees to pay for rally expenses already incurred or committed.

I/we have read and accept this Indemnity Waiver

PETROLHEADS

Taupo VCC Car of the Year Show –

Sunday 23rd of February

February is usually when we have our Club Open Day. In recent years this has been held in the carpark adjacent to our Clubrooms at Hickling Park but there were never many members of the public turning up. So, this year we will try something different and change the location to The Landing (where Café Lacus is). Given that there is quite a lot of other things happening at this location, we are hopeful more people will have the opportunity to admire our beautiful machines!

TAUPO VCC CAR OF THE YEAR 2025

And just to make it more interesting, we will invite the public to vote for their favourite car on display. The car with the most votes will be the inaugural winner of the TAUPO VCC CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD and will have their name inscribed on the new and fabulous trophy. The event will run from 10 am until 1 pm and all of your cars will need to be parked on display for those 3 hours. This will give you all plenty of time to have a coffee and/or lunch at Lacus and perhaps have a round of mini-golf on the Putt Putt course. The prizegiving will be just after 1 pm.

So get out your buckets of Meguiar's or Mother’s finest products and spruce your baby up for the big time!

Rotorua Lakeside Car Show

After trying to arrange a convoy over to the event, Lynette and I headed off at 8.45 am to Rotorua to attend the Lakeside Car Show.

A quick, non-eventful trip to Rotorua to arrive at about 9.45 to around 40 cars already parked. Drove in, found a park next to another Stag, and were joined by a 3rd Stag next to 2 other Triumphs. A good cross-section of vehicles with MK1 to Mk 4 Zephyrs and Zodiacs, some very lovely Morrie1000s (from Auckland Morris Minor Club) with one beautifully preserved traveller. A few Rollers, Mustangs, Jags, a beautiful Studebaker Hawk, and some Austins, including a Farina. The odd customs and, to top it all off, one of 12 original DeLorians in NZ. A well-presented car whose owners live just north of Rotorua and also has a Triumph Stag. Ran into a couple of our members who came across also.

The weather did not play ball, and we were pelted by a number of heavy downpours between the odd bit of sun. Around 60 plus vehicles, so hopefully, the St Johns got a good donation out of it. Lynette and I left around 11.30, and we found the Stags rag top was not watertight. We ended up rather wet when we had coffee in the car while it was raining. The next stop for us is Whakatane on the 1st Feb, so hoping for better weather.
