Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone Well to quote Bob Dylan “the seasons are a changing”. Summer has officially finished now we move into Autumn. There is a very full program of events and Outings right through to Queens Birthday weekend when we hold our Double 50 Rally, which is a National calendar Event. Speaking of the Double 50 Heather and I have become very familiar with all roads to be used for this event. We move to the checking phase and along with Graeme and Julie the event coordination is all in hand. At our next Club night in April we will be having Danny Ryan as a guest Speaker. Danny is very well known to many club member and it will be a chance to catch up with him before he relocates to Nelson. In May at Club night we will be hosting the Fun-Ho man. Write these date in your diary so you don’t miss them. Recently a number of Club Members made the trip down to New Plymouth for the “Americana” weekend. It was extremely good form all reports . I shall be venturing over to Whangamata for the Beach Hop next weekend, so I hope it is fine.

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter CHAIRMANS REPORT APRIL 2017: The first quarter of the year has just flown by; there have been a lot of activities to keep our members very busy and involved. But as the TV commercials say “wait there is more”, and indeed there is. April and May have a very varied program which should suit a large number of members. The Mooloo Meander is held on the 8 th April, a great event for all Motorcycle enthusiasts. The North Island Easter Rally is being held in Auckland this year. As most Aucklanders leave to go North and South there will not be any major traffic issues. We need to support them as we are hosting the 2018 North Island Easter Rally. The rally is starting at the Jolly Farmer Inn at Dury so would be an easy day trip if you only want to do the Saturday rally. Up and back on Saturday, give it some thought. There is an Auction being held at the late Bill Troughton’s farm in Matamata on the 22 nd and 23rd April, viewing day is the 21st April. Bill’s collection of cars, trucks, motorbikes, tractors, stationary engines, and tools is huge. For any more information contact Howard Porteous. The Twilight run is to be held on the 29th April and is being organised by Brian and Gwen Weightman. This is a very social run and finishes at the Cambridge Raceway for Dinner. Join in and have some fun, you don’t need to have your old car, come in your modern if that suits you better. May is also a very busy month to keep your interest alive as the weather gets cooler and the days get shorter. Theo De Leeuw is organising another shed raid for the Veteran and Vintage enthusiasts on the 7th May. Club Custodian, Hugh McInally has a few jobs that need doing around the Club Rooms, so he is holding a Working Bee on the 14 th May. On the 21st May Ian Patton is organising a run to the Te Awamutu Museum to visit the Dam Busters Exhibit then on the 27th May we have the Training Day. This allows members to learn the Rally Rules or brush up on rusty knowledge. This is being run by Greg Terrill. This of course leads onto the Double Fifty Rally which is on over Queens Birthday Weekend. What a busy time we have, but of course I wouldn’t expect members to do everything (unless you want to) but it would be nice for most members to attend something. So as part of my welcome to new members please look at the program and find something that you would like to participate in and come along, believe me you will enjoy yourself. Remember if your club eligible vehicle is off the road come along in your modern, you are more important than your vehicle. There are only two club nights before the AGM, (April and May). Your club really needs a Club Captain to ensure the Clubs program is carried out. The club Captain does not have to organise everything but has to ensure that events are organised and run correctly. So if you want to become further involved in the Club have a chat to any member of the committee. There is one other position that will need to be filled, the position of Chairman. I am not standing for re-election this year, this is my Fifth year as Chairman and I believe the branch needs some fresh leadership and new ideas. I am giving you all plenty of notice so please put your thinking caps on and talk to any committee member or myself. It is an enjoyable job but there comes a time to call it quits, and this is the time for me. Again WELCOME to all new and transferred members. Graham Pate. 4 Chairman.

Motorcycle Rally - Many Thanks To Marshals The 25th VCC National Motorcycle Rally held at Waitomo is now firmly in the rear view mirror, and a very successful event it turned out to be too. This was due in no small part to the great contribution made by a large number of branch members in helping with marshalling duties on the Saturday rally day. Whether it was on the roadside, in the parking areas, at field events or in the kitchen, all played a part in bringing about a great result reflecting well on the Branch and it's membership. The rally committee have received many compliments about the organisation and conduct of the event - frankly, we couldn't have done it without you, so take a bow and accept our grateful thanks. We do hope you enjoyed the experience too. Bob Hayton for the Rally Committee.

2017 Club Open Day The club Open Day has been and gone for another couple of years. Was it a success? If you go by the number of new members that were recruited, then very much so. Three members joined on the day and 8 or 9 filled out Membership Enquiry Forms which should result in more new members. If you go by the Public attendance it most certainly was a success, with cars lined along Thornton Road for a kilometre either way of Maclean St. Gates opened at 10am with all display cars in place including our Latte Lady Coffee Van. The BBQ was fired up by Tony & Judy Brierley. Thanks to you both along with your helper Christine Davis for the great effort. While I am on the subject of a “Big Thanks” a mention must go to Ian Patton. Ian approached a free-lance reporter that he knew that use to work for the Waikato Times. He arranged for him to interview a couple of our members and get photos of their cars etc. The article was then distributed to the various local town newspapers for publication. It certainly achieved results big time. Can’t beat free advertising eh?? The profitable side effect of the day was the takings out of the Parts Shed. They were busy all day with the cash register ringing with satisfaction. Along with the parts shed dragging in money, we had the 360 Bit Drill Bit Set raffle drawing the crowd of hopeful punters. At 3pm on the dot it was drawn by a young Japanese student that had come along with a couple of members of the public. So who won the raffle? Bryan and Lorraine Cossey won it. Congratulations!! It was good to see it went to club members. The raffle netted around $440 for the club which was a good effort (it’s helped to pay for the free sausages that were dished out on the day. Is it worth doing the Open Day every second year?? Definitely!! Could we do it better? I don’t think so. If the answer was Yes!! What would we do? Maybe advertise FREE SAUSAGES for the public in the marketing? Only joking. Seriously though, what could we do?? We could run a continuous movie in the club?? Maybe the historical 2 disc DVD that Roy Rowe has just spent 2 years producing. It covers the first 20 years of the Waikato club. An excellent DVD. For the record, they are available to purchase via Jan Dearlove. By running the DVD in the clubroom you are bringing the public into the “atmosphere” of the club. After all the “atmosphere” of the club is what makes or breaks a club. In conclusion, our Open Day was very successful and before you know it two years will be back around. When you read in the Venture that the Open Day is coming up and you want to display your car then give then contact the organiser a get you name down. The last thing we ever want to do is have to say No!! To a member that wanted to display his or her car in the Open Day, because we ran out of room in the display area. Hugh 6
Ladies Rally- 5 March
The Ladies Rally this year was organised by Kathryn Parsons and Lesley Wilson and friends. They called Dairy Dames for ‘A Dairy Day Out’ so we joined a mix of cowgirls, Friesian cows, dairy farmers, milk maids, cream and milk, Holey Cows, 2 Greek Goddesses of Agriculture- Demeter, and various farm workers; a total of 36 ladies in 15 vehicles for a tour of the cream of Waikato dairy country. We were invited to bring our Moolah so shopping was obviously on the agenda. Our first stop was at the Cambridge Museum looking for the answer to our first question. For those who have never been there it is a small local museum with a variety of interesting displays, particularly related to Cambridge and worth a visit. Next stop was along Kaipaki Road at the Lily Pad where temptation, in the form of arty stuff for your house, garden and gifts, was great. Then onto the Old Creamery where we all received a cow cookie and again had time for shopping but also for coffee. Then it was back through Leamington and left at the Service Station to follow the road over the hills through Whitehall and Te Miro to the Morrinsville RSA, all the while continuing to look for the answers to more questions. Lunch was at the Morrinsville RSA Bowling Club. We had two hours in Morrinsville but the afternoon run sheet had more questions to answer- this time regarding 6 of their famous cows. As the shops were shut in Morrinsville, the Morrinsville Museum and the Wallace Gallery were recommended as alternatives to shopping. On leaving Morrinsville we were guided to one last place to spend our moolah- a garden and craft cottage on the edge of Morrinsville. On the road again we found silent checks had replaced the questions. The first silent check revealed the test was now to look for not car makes but dairy breeds! Our route took us back through Scotsman’s Valley and along the foothills to the Clubrooms where the last vital question was asked “How many open stock crossing signs did we see?” Ooh! who thought to count them? Not us! So it was a guess- in all cases by the look of the results, but it was a decider as well as 6 teams had recorded the same score before this question. Back at the clubrooms the men had been busy as… making waffles with fruit salad and cream for afternoon tea. The tables were all set with a bouquet, tea & coffee and a chocky bar each. Thanks guys, much appreciated after a hard day!! Winners- Dianne Porteous and Marcia Pate, second Glenys Braddock and Liz Yorston, third Pat Holmes and Jillian Hayton, best dressed Pam Berry and Lorraine Cossey (Greek Goddesses). Thanks Kathryn, Lesley & Co for a great Dairy Day Out. Sue Burnett

VCC EXECUTIVE MEETING REPORT: There were two presentations done by an IT consultant. The first was on setting up a Face Book page for the VCC. This showed how it can be used to promote the club, branches, and events. This is an excellent way of reaching members and the public throughout N.Z. and the world. The site will be controlled by an administrator to ensure that no inappropriate material is put up. The second presentation was on a proposed National Day for the VCC. This will be held in August or September, starting this year and will be an annual event. The concept is to have a National Brand and Logo and the open day will be a fundraiser for a high profile charity. The Cancer Society was suggested, as some branches already have a good relationship with this Society. The name “Rally for Cancer” was suggested, the entry fee would be donated to the Charity. It is envisaged that other car clubs and the public would all be involved. A Motion was put to have a National Day and was CARRIED. Another Motion was put to have the Cancer Society as the Charity, and this was CARRIED. This is all good positive stuff. Southland Branch are going to Host the 2018 South Island Easter Rally. South Canterbury is going to host the 2019 Veteran Rally. The Vero profit share to the club is $23,693 which is down $3500 due to house claims. OUTCOME OFNOTICES OF MOTION: The majority of delegates supported it. After Rod Brayshaw did an in-depth presentation on the consequences of this notice of motion, no Delegates supported the Motion. Nelson Branch wishes to hold a Fifty Year Re-Enactment (in 2022) of the 1972 Rally. This year’s AGM is to be hosted by the Marlborough Branch in Blenheim. The dates are Friday 11th to Sunday 13th August. Since the Branch Magazines have been put on the Website the hits have gone from 400 in August to 2624 in January. 2021 Rally Report: The Rally director, Colin Johnson, gave a report on the rally, to be known as “THE VERO FESTIVAL OF HISTORIC MOTORING 2021” It will be a 10 day event from the 19th to the 29th January 2021. TSB Stadium will be the HQ. Camping grounds, Racecourse, Pukekura Park and the Bowl of Brookland will all be utilised. There will be 5 days of Rallying with a special Veteran Rally, “The Sea to the Mountain.” The entrants’ only day and a speed event are all being looked at. The rally days will be about 80-100miles, you will rally to the lunch stop then free run back or free run to the lunch stop and rally back. All this sounds really good. All in all a good positive meeting with the revised format of only one delegate per branch working well, but it is a shame that about 10 branches did not attend. Graham Pate. (Delegate) 9

Used Car...this is priceless....
Joke
If you don't laugh at this one you need to lighten up! It was a small town and the patrolman was making his evening rounds.. As he was checking a used car lot, he came upon two little old ladies sitting in a used car.. He stopped and asked them why they were sitting there in the car or were they trying to steal it? 'Heavens no, we bought it.' 'Then why don’t you drive it away.' We can't drive.' Then why did you buy it?' 'We were told that if we bought a Used car here we'd get screwed ......so we're just waiting............ 12

Veterans at Morrinsville A & P Show The Morrinsville A & P Show celebrated its Centenary on March 4 at the Morrinsville Showgrounds. The showgrounds and Morrinsville itself was the centre of the Branch’s major rallies (local, regional and National) in its formative years, and it is still a venue that supports our Club and other motoring interest groups. The Centenary Show was organised by member Ron Tuck and the Club was invited to display vehicles in keeping with the Centenary, and to transport the Miss Morrisville contestants at the Show.
