Editor’s Snippet As the days grow longer and sooner or later the rain will stop the summer season is arriving . On the 30th October we are having a Club Run which should be interesting. We are keen to see some new faces or even those we haven’t seen for a while . One thing that Members have clearly let the Committee know about is their wish to have more Club Runs . So we will be expecting a good number for the Run on the 30th October (see add later in mag). This year’s PV Rally was a great success . Hugh and Graeme Luxford promised a good Rally which they delivered , pity about the weather (Hugh obviously didn’t have enough credits with Hughie upstairs). As we move into the silly season remember to put our Xmas Gymkhana on your calendars, and remember to bring the Family along for a fun filled afternoon. Can people give some consideration to how they receive their Venture please with the mounting cost of postage and the slowness of delivery being several factors . Another reason is the amazing colour on all pages which is not obtained in the printed copy’s. If you wish to change to Email copy let me know please.

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter CHAIRMANS REPORT First of all I must tell you all how glad Marcia and I are to be home again. After spending two months in the UK it is so nice to be back and have the feeling of space again. The cities are just so crowded as are the holiday spots of Devon and Cornwall during the school holidays. We took the borrowed camper van on some of narrowest public roads I have ever seen. We took a bus into a local village and it was brushing the hedgerows on both sides of the road, this was a two lane road and all the cars had to pull into the driveways to allow us through as of course the bus had right of way. The highlight of the trip was the week we spent in a narrow canal boat with Snow and Judith Van Den Broek, fellow club members from Matamata. The canal trip was up in North Wales and was a lot of fun operating locks and lift bridges. We went over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which was built in the late 1800’s, an amazing engineering feat and quite scary to cross in the boat as on one side of the boat there was no handrail and there is a drop of 126 feet to the bottom. This was a world Heritage Site and was really amazing. We both loved The Republic of Ireland, lovely countryside, great music and really friendly people, also the Guinness was great. Marcia loved the Waterford Crystal shop and factory tour, and yes she did buy some crystal. Well that’s enough about our trip for now. Let’s get back to club business. We did miss a couple of great events while we were away, The Hill Climb and the PV Rally. Congratulations to the entrants and the organizers for these two important events on our club calendar. The end of the year is coming along very quickly, it will soon be Christmas and between now and the end of the year there is still a lot to interest members. The 5th November is the Veteran Rally, always a sight to see, all the Veteran Cars lined up waiting to leave on their run. Then on the 20 th November it is our Annual Swap Meet. This is our major fundraiser for the year so it would be good if the majority of members can help out in the morning for a couple of hours. If you can help give Jeremy Brook, 07 8241641, or myself a call and offer your help. It’s not hard work, helping with parking, and collecting money are the main tasks. This is a joint venture project with the Vintage Tractor Club so come along and help, if you help out you don’t have to pay to enter the swap meet. The Christmas function on the 11th December at the Clubrooms looks like it will be a ripper. Dave Nordell is organising a Gymkhana that will be fun. There will be games and activities for the young ones, so bring along you Children and Grandchildren. This will be followed by a BBQ at the Clubrooms. I also believe that Father Christmas will come along to see all the Children, Young and OLD. The committee do need your help in two areas. Firstly we need someone to organise a New Years Day Run, this is usually a low key run, non competitive and can be a run to anywhere, a park, a lake or beach, perhaps a picnic lunch, whatever you want to do. If you would like to help out here just contact any committee member. Secondly, there is the position of Club Captain, if you have any interest in this position please give me a call. The Annual Programme is already set so it is mainly co -ordinating activities to ensure the programme is carried out. ) 4

I would like to offer a warm Waikato Welcome to all our new members. Some of you I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet and I hope that changes before the end of the year. Club Captain

Marcia and I are looking forward to the weekend away in Coromandel in December, see you there. On our holiday I did manage to squeeze in two OLD CAR MUSEUMS. The first one was the Cotswold Motoring Museum and Toy Collection. This is housed in the old mill in a delightful village called Bourton on the Water. This museum was purchased by the Civil Service Motoring Association (CSMA) in 1999. It is a very clean, tidy and well presented museum. Cars from 1922 up to 1974 are on display. Motorcycles from 1913 to 1978 are also displayed along with caravans, bicycles, signs toys and memorabilia. In all a top class Museum. The other one was the Llangollen Motor Museum in North Wales. Snow and I visited this one while we were on the Canal Boat Trip. This museum was very interesting, but not as clean or tidy as the first Museum. It had some very interesting cars, some that Snow and I had never heard of . Also it had a lot of “Stuff” for sale. Stuff like books, signs, toys, spare parts, but we didn’t buy anything. Once again it is really good to be back, and we are looking forward to our first club outing. Keep smiling and Keep Left. Graham Pate (Chairman)

The Irish have solved their own fuel problems They imported 50 million tonnes of sand from The Arabs and they are going to drill for their own oil….

Paddy says to Mick– I’m ready for a holiday, only this year I’m going to do it a bit different. 3 years ago I went to Spain and Mary got pregnant. 2 year ago I went to Italy and Mary got pregnant. Last year I went to Majorca and Mary got pregnant. Mick asks—so what are you going to do different this year? Paddy replies, - I’ll take her with me! 5

JOKE Why Grandfathers Are Different! Have you ever wondered what the difference is between Grandmothers and Grandfathers? Well, here it is: There was this loving grandfather who always made a special effort to spend time with his son's family on weekends. Every Saturday morning he would take his 5-year-old granddaughter out for a drive in the car for some quality time -- pancakes, ice cream, candy-just him and his granddaughter. One particular Saturday, however, he had a terrible cold and could not get out of bed. He knew his granddaughter always looked forward to their drives and would be very disappointed. Luckily, his wife came to the rescue and said that she would take their granddaughter for her weekly drive and breakfast. When they returned, the little girl anxiously ran upstairs to see her grandfather who was still in bed. "Well, did you enjoy your ride with grandma?" he asked. "Not really, PaPa, it was boring. We didn't see a single arsehole, poofta, dole-bludging piece of sh*t, horse's a*se, tree hugging socialist left wing green prick, blind bastard, dipshit, rag-headed Muslim camel humper or son of a bitch anywhere we went! We just drove around and Grandma smiled at everyone she saw. I really didn't have any fun." Can you please excuse the language but it makes for a good story Bozy 8

November Club Night Wednesday 9th November This Club night is going to be something different . At much expense to VCC we are going to host Paul Trenwith. Who’s he I hear you say! Simple he was one of the original members of the Hamilton County Blue Grass Band. He will be bringing along his Banjo, but is also a master of guitar, Mandolin, Fiddle plus many other string instruments. So come along and talk to Paul and here him play his style of Bluegrass music.

Cover Story An Outing for Lucy. This morning, surprisingly, the covers came off, I had a quick wash, then off we went to Pirongia. The children at the school were studying Technology and Transport through the ages, so my carers took me on an outing and a big ‘show off’. I stood beside some moderns and the children, all 5 classes of them, one after the other, were asked to spot the differences. They were very good! The most indignant difference was the lack of seat belts, the tiny tail light, and ‘Oh dear, what no air bags!’ They were intrigued by the lack of no indicators, and we all tried giving clear hand signals. My slim wheels and my curved door handles were much admired. No one guessed where the fuel tank was, nor how I could start without a key. I was likened to modern 4x4s, as I was high off the ground and have running boards. A common question was ‘Does your driver have to have a license?’ We finished off with me taking groups for a slow drive around the playing field – they loved that! Then it was off to the coffee shop for a welcome cuppa for G & J. 9

As the final part of “get to know your Committee "Robyn Doughty has given us a bit of back ground information on their life so far . As also a new Member it is important that we know how we can help Glyn and Robyn settle into the club. Glyn and I have only been involved with the Club since July 2015, after Glyn attended the Club’s Open Day earlier that year, and after I started working for Colin Dray, a fellow Club member. We moved to Tauwhare in 2012 from the Waitoki countryside north of Auckland, where we had an 18 acre block with cattle, sheep and pigs. It was a beautiful block, but after Glyn had an accident on the block in early 2010, we decided to sell. After a year or so it finally sold (wouldn’t take that long now!!) and we escaped the ‘Rat Race’. We had lived in the Hibiscus Coast area for most of our lives so it was a big move south. We had an Austin Ruby (in bits) that Glyn had been given at least 16 years ago, that he was ‘going to do up one day’. After learning how much it could cost and how long it would take to get it on the road, we decided to buy the HR Holden we have now, and have been able to enjoy many outings – the first ‘big one’ being the Otorohanga PV Rally in which we were complete novices!! At least it was a beautiful day and we had fun, even though I did not understand the Straight line Navigation (I do now!). Glyn is a panel beater by trade and spent many years overseas, and I was the first female Park Ranger for the Auckland Regional Council (back in the 80’s), after growing up on Shakespear Regional Park on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. We have just had our 30th Wedding Anniversary. I am also a keen Genealogist and can spend many hours poring over old newspapers, on the Net, or wandering around cemeteries (all solitary activities) and as I am naturally shy and quiet (yes, it’s true!), I became the Club Librarian to become more involved with the Club, and to get to know more people.

25th National Motorcycle Rally at Waitomo.

The clock is ticking now towards the entry closing date for the 25th National Motorcycle Rally and After-Rally Tour to be based at Waitomo in February. Monday November 14th is the latest date for receipt of entries before a penalty payment kicks in, and we don’t want to suffer that, do we. This is sure to be a memorable rally and tour with a distinctly laid-back kiwi atmosphere. The general theme is ‘rural’, with routes, visits and entertainment arranged to achieve this outcome. The organising team consisting of Waikato and Auckland Branch members, who stepped in at short notice, have put together a great weekend event and supporting hub style after-rally tour. Whether you travel down to Waitomo each day or have arranged suitable accommodation in or around the village, make sure that you don’t miss out on the social side of things which is often how these events are recalled in later years. Funnily enough, people still tell us that the food at the Cambridge event in 2005 was ‘fantastic’. We are using the same caterer this time around!! Individual competitive events are on the Saturday, with the branch teams gymkhana on Sunday. It’s time for Waikato to start thinking about the makeup of their team for this event – or more than one team if feasible. Each team is to consist of four, a combination and one bike each from Veteran/Vintage, Post-Vintage/Post-War and Post-60/Post-80 classes. That shouldn’t be difficult to arrange. Ring--ins are allowed to help the smaller branches, but there has to be a minimum of two riders from the same branch to form a branch team with them. It’s always a lot of fun. Marshalling is an area where non-riders can be of great assistance, get a good view of entrants’ machines and also really enjoy themselves. Graham Pate has agreed to be Chief Marshal on the Saturday, so let Graham know you are happy to help and he will be able to fit you into his team. Email: gmpate@ihug.co.nz or ph: (07) 888-0009. If you have previously offered to myself, then Graham knows already. Bob Hayton – Rally Director 14

Annual PV Rally Flying the flag for the P80 class, we arrived at the Te Awamutu Rose Gardens in our ‘only just eligible’ BMW Cabriolet with ample time to peruse the wide range of cars entered for the Annual PV Rally. With around 40 cars entered from many marques – US and European, the organisers must have been very pleased with the turnout. Instructions were duly handed out shortly before setting off – just a few over-riding instructions committed to memory (or so we thought), it was time to set off for a very pleasant drive out eastwards through rolling verdant countryside. This is such a pretty time of year, with the new fresh green leaves sprouting on the trees and the last remnants of early spring growth in the gardens. We were well on our way to Pukeatua when that over-riding instruction to use Te Rahu Road popped into consciousness – oh well, never mind, we weren’t the only ones to have sailed straight past it. Our route eventually turned us back via Wharepapa South and Maihiihi coming into Otorohanga from the south for lunch, where most of us sampled the fare on offer at the Otorohanga Club. Plenty of time to enjoy a catch up with friends before heading off for the second half of our run. Straight line navigation from the get-go after lunch had a few going around in circles – but with good observation it didn’t prove any obstacle for us. More scenic countryside, the recent rains certainly raising the water tables and putting a lot more wet stuff into the streams and rivers. The rally finish was at Chris Empson’s impressive Pokhuru collection of vehicles spread over two large barns, topped off with an afternoon tea of epic proportions. Prize-giving saw the class winners rewarded with the Overall winner’s place going to Gordon and Jan Dearlove. All entrant’s rally numbers were then put into the hat to see who would get to plot next year’s run. That privilege went to the youngest entrant – Lukas Nordell who will be ably assisted by the Brooks. Thanks to the organisers for an interesting run, and as promised over many roads that we had not much travelled in the past. Jillian & Bob Hayton 16

October Club Night Club night in October saw a discussion with Ian McLeod and Jim Palmer, two very well known people in car circles in the greater Waikato. Firstly Ian told his story and his career in the car industry in Hamilton. This included being a Principal dealer for Lada and Mercedes. Then Jim Palmer told us about himself and his families passion and experience with cars and the motor industry. He touched on a very accomplished motor racing career which saw him rise to world class form with other very distinguished Motorsport Giants .

Here is another one for your diary

Westside Glory October 30th Club Run Graham Boswell and Graeme Rickard with assistance from our good Women have organised the October Club run. This will start from the Classic Car Museum (in Hamilton ), first car away at 10.30 am. This run will not be the “normal run”. It will start with Coffee at the café around 10.00 for those who wish. At the completion of the Run people can stay for lunch if they wish. The run will finish at the Museum. If People wish to go through the museum this has generously been reduced to $10.00 per head. As a footnote to this Graham and Graeme are plotting the Double Fifty Rally next Queens Birthday Weekend. It may be an indicator of what's to come!!!!!! If you require any information please contact either of us our numbers are in the committee list.
