Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone Welcome to 2017, I hope Xmas was kind to one and all. As we start to get focused one the year ahead we need our running shoes on as there is plenty going on for one and all , no matter what age your vehicle is or even if it is no presently mobile. At the Waikato VVC the committee is trying to be pro-active and provide all sorts of activities for it’s member . So get involved with what is happening. Again probably an opportune time to raise the subject of getting your newsletters sent online. As we are well aware our postal service is getting slower and more expensive all photos are in colour. As the Editor I send our magazine to Federation they put it in tern online along with all other Club Mags. This is a good way to have a browse through what other clubs are up to .The number of other Club newsletters we receive at the Club for your perusal is diminishing. Keep those adds, letters and Jokes coming in as I rely on our members for their input and contributions.

CHAIRMAN REPORT JANUARY 2017 I wish you all a very Happy New Year. I hope you have all survived Christmas Day and New Years Eve without any lasting side effects. We had a lovely Christmas day with family and friends. Our son was racing his sidecar at Wanganui on Boxing Day with mixed results, he came 4 th in his first race but cracked his forks so couldn’t race anymore, but as usual they enjoyed themselves! So our family has all survived Christmas and New Year, so that’s a good start for 2017. I wonder how many members have made New Year Resolutions; I gave up years ago because I fulfilled them all, “YEAH RIGHT” I do hope that some of you have thought about your club and what you can do for the club in 2017, it’s a New Year so let’s have some new ideas and that new members come forward to assist in the club activities. We finished 2016 with a fun gymkhana and a great BBQ, it was a lovely day. Thanks to all the organisers. Then we started 2017 with a lovely picnic on New Year’s Day, Thanks again to the organisers. There is quite a number of activities on the programme for the rest of the year, so I am sure you will find something to interest you, come along and enjoy. We have a Club Open Day, Ladies Rally, Vintage Venture, Twilight Run and that is only up to April. Easter this year is from the 14 th to 17 th of April and this year’s North Island Easter Rally is being hosted by the Auckland Branch. I would like to encourage our members to attend. I am sure that it will be a fun weekend, Marcia and I will be going so hopefully we will see lots of you there. There is of course a reason that I am encouraging you all to attend, as next year (2018) our branch is hosting the North Island Easter Rally so we need lots of support. To get support we have to give support. So think seriously about going to Auckland for Easter and then they may give us good support in 2018. Remember that everybody leaves Auckland at Easter so the traffic will be lighter then. Also 2018 is a special year for our Branch, it is our 60 th Anniversary. The Branch started in 1958 so in 2018 we will be celebrating 60years and that is pretty amazing. The 25 th National Motorcycle Rally is being held at Waitomo from the 17 th February. This is a joint venture between the Waikato and Auckland Branches. Our Branch is doing the Rally Marshalling on Saturday 18 th . Thanks for all the members who have volunteered to help, if there is anybody else that would like to help give me a call I can always find you a job. There will be some awesome Motorcycles there so come and have a look. Welcome to all our new members. I hope you enjoy your time in the Waikato Branch, become involved, if your club eligible car is off the road come in your modern, remember the most important part of any club are the members. Bring on 2017. Graham Pate

Straight line Navigation After just having completed the PV rally, it made me realise just how many members dislike straight line navigation. In fact I remember that on one rally I was on a member pulled out of the rally and went home once they found out that the afternoon section contained some SL. The first rally we ever entered contained some SL so I just followed the car in front only to discover that they knew less about it than we did. SL navigation is easy once the penny drops and it becomes an interesting challenge. If you want to enjoy rallying then learn to do it. To this end, the committee have decided to give one on one tuition for those members who want to learn SL. We have members in Hamilton, Cambridge and Matamata who are willing to spend time with you so that you understand SL and begin to enjoy it . Just phone any committee member who will put you in touch with the appropriate person. Don’t be shy, put your hand up for help and start to enjoy the whole rally.

Coromandel Anabasis Or ‘It’s a long way for a game of golf!’ 3-day Coromandel Adventure, December 2016 “What a really lovely weekend! Weather, company, food, roads, all wonderful!” Just one of the numerous positive comments about the weekend. Superbly plotted by Godfrey and Jackie Larsen – and enjoyed immensely by all participants... If you have never been on a tour like this before, come along to the next one, you‘ll have a great time. This tour incorporated the second annual ‘Green Jacket Challenge’- winner claims the high quality sports jacket secretly coveted by all club members and proudly donated by the Porteous Family. So much packed into 3 days! We were all pretty pleased with ourselves when most cars made it to each stage in one way or another - Jackie and Godfrey Larsen (Sunbeam Talbot), Ian and Jenny Patton (36 Chev replaced by a BMW), Bev and Peter Taylor (Triumph Stag), Marcia and Graeme Pate (Mercedes Benz), Knud and Kay Nielsen (MGA), Gordon and Jan Dearlove (MGBGT), Stan Richardson (Sunbeam Talbot Tourer), Roy Riley and Anita Coles (BMW), Robyn and Glynn Doughty (Holden), Diane and Howard Porteous ( Honda), Louise and Paul Clark (MGTF), Barbara and Jeremy Brook (Mondeo with a lot of ride cadging with the Larsens and Stan) I have listed the highlights here from our 3 days of wonderful motoring. By the time you read this you will be keen to dip headfirst into another year of friendship and car tinkering. Anybody who has not taken the plunge and joined a club weekend tour please talk to any of us, and if this tale hasn’t got you hooked, we will soon have you convinced. In sort of chronological order, then:First up it was to understand the tour headline – googling it over a cuppa at “Profs” café in Gordonton– Anabasis – noun rare ‘a military advance into the interior of a country (with reference to that of Cyrus the Younger into Asia in 401 BC, as narrated by Xenophon in his work Anabasis)’. So crikey, we try not to worry as we march across the Hauraki Plains… The Dancing Creek Dam, Kaueranga Valley, is Friday’s lunch stop, heaven knows how on earth we all arrive there, turns out Godfrey actually means the Visitors Centre, (of course Godfrey doesn’t want to spoon feed us too much detail…) so the cars are getting covered in thick yellow dust as we hurtle deep into the valley searching in vain, eventually finding out that the real Dam is actually only a 3 hour tramp from of the head of the Kaueranga Valley. On we go. Ian & Jenny’s Chev breaks down at Thames ( not the first occurrence on this type of tour– it’s as if their cars themselves know what’s ahead and make a stand) – requires a quick trip back to Hamilton and a speedy return in their BMW, catching us up …. Then it’s up picturesque SH25 and upon reaching Shelly Bay Top 10 Motor camp in its tranquil setting, 10 of us head uphill on the narrow gauge Driving Creek Railway – Barry Brickell’s grave is pointed out high on the track under a kowhai, with a large wooden cross topped with a wine cap – we are assured that Barry did not consume all of the thousands of bottles used to reinforce the walls along the track but did contribute a fair few. We hear about the history of the train and the imminent establishment of the National Pottery Museum on the property. We agree that even if you have done it before, the railway will always remain a good adventure.

Pot luck dinner, fantastic array of delicious food – the lurking seagulls don’t get a chance. Bagpipes at 8am (a rousing wake up for us and the other Top 10 campsite guests) both mornings from maestro Gordon Dearlove, no tour complete without this stirring start to the day…. Joined for Saturday by Sue and John Post in their 1929 Dodge we head over SH309 to Kennedy Bay then up and back across to the west coast just above Colville. Our old cars make light work of the dusty gravel roads. Stan’s patented dust reducer under the rear of his Talbot – actually brews up more dust than any other car, not that Stan would agree. Even the guard itself tries to detach itself and requires running repairs. We careen around the corners on the long and winding narrow Port Jackson road which hangs off the side of the peninsula’s west coast, we exalt in the glorious views out over the Firth of Thames, we marvel at the idyllic camping spot of Godfrey and his family when he was eight years old. Porteous’ backing up at the summit of the hill before Port Jackson in the face of a fast paced oncoming watering tanker – excellent manoeuvring Diane! Picnicking at Fletcher’s Bay, some of us spot a dotterel chick on the beach –fiercely protected by its parents. Rowdy dinner at the Star and Garter pub and yes most of us have the fish and chips, we are reminded of days past when a bunch of young men on a stag night flood the bar. Stan catches up with a couple of old friends who LOVE fishing. Schnapper is Sunday breakfast for many of us. Sunday and it’s the Coroglen market, Coroglen Pub, the Square Kauri , more narrow dusty roads and dense forest, wonderful fabulous – back out to Tapu. A leisurely picnic at Waiomu under the pohutakawas (go and see the pohutakawa with yellow flowers outside the G.A.S station at Coromandel) The BIG Finish - Sunday afternoon at the Te Aroha Golf Course and to everyone’s astonishment it’s a round of foot golf (the next big thing to hit golf courses) where we kick soccer balls into very large holes while avoiding real golfers on the fairways then refreshments in the 19th to revive us after the hot sun and exertion. Green Jacket admirably won and ‘shyly’ accepted by Gordon, congratulations. Phew – until next year! Thanks from us all Jackie and Godfrey - for your ideas, enthusiasm and organisation.

Barries bits The other day I saw a fully restored 1939 Ford Utility very nice . The first Owner was a Farmer, in 1939 because the Government was commodeering vehicles for use because of the outbreak of World War 2. The Farmer wasn’t having a bar of this so he stored it in a Cave on his Farm. It stayed there after the War and it was recorded where it was concealed. The Farmer passed on . Some time later the Family went and found the Ford Utility. Just as well it could be a one off in NZ

2016 Auckland Motorcycle Rally Auckland Branch tried a bit of innovation in running their motorcycle rally in November last, with a base in the southern Hunua’s near Kaiaua. Paul Muir’s expansive property at nearby Mangatangi was the location, with his large barn serving as rally hq and Friday meal venue. Half a dozen Waikato members made the trip there and even picked up a few awards too. The Health & Safety policy for this event was brief – running over marshals was really to be avoided! An explanation of instruction interpretations was equally succinct – right means Right and left is where your watch is likely to be! With all that valuable information tucked under helmets, the first of 40 starters was ready to get on the way in overcast weather, with high hopes of a great day’s riding. All kitted out in riding gear and helmet, Paul’s wife Robyn attempted a flying start on the ride-on mower, but was apparently disqualified for not having a number, or was it for too many wheels? The pair had taken advantage of their southerly location, plotting a route which first showed off all the local roads named Miranda something in the district, before diving deep down into the Waikato countryside. After passing Mangatarata, brushing Ngatea and following canals to Kaihere, a very long timed section finally ended south of Patetonga, later giving way to a gravel surface for a while. The proprietors of the newly re-opened fuel station at Tahuna were very keen to photograph all the bikes that stopped there to top up! A good morning ride was followed by a lunch stop at Mangateparu where the local PTA ladies had excelled themselves with a huge lunch of many colours, flavours and visual presentations. Local kids and dads will no doubt have eaten well for a while afterwards, for it was certainly too much for our hungry group! Back on the road and with rain threatening, Tauhei and Whitikahu soon passed beneath the wheels, with a stop at the property of David and Michael Norton to view their impressive collection of stationary engines. Quite a collection in fact, with several quietly chuffing away and our hosts happy to answer questions or demonstrate starting procedures. Turning north now and with the weather really beginning to pack in, many riders must have been starting to look forward to the eventual and very welcome hot cup of tea and scones put on at the Muir ranch as we each completed the 115 mile run. A prize-giving dinner held at the Mangatangi Hall was quite well attended and included a novel IoM race teams competition dreamed up by Rally Secretary Graeme Crawley. Quite rightly, nobody ever found out who won, most falling off far too many times for comfort! Rally winner turned out to be Tony Vaughan riding an LE Velocette, whilst our best were Neville & Cheryl Mickleson (1st P60), Kelvin Mitchell (3rd PW) and Jillian Hayton (1st Lady). Ron Fey, Peter Spiller and Bob Hayton also enjoyed themselves on this weekend trip
