Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone Well today was the shortest day , roll-on summer. The Double 50 is over for another year, the day turned out perfect for the Rally and the evening “After match function” was enjoyed by all. Congratulations to Wayne and Tracey Hayward , who were the 1st Waikato Entrant home, Well Done. Last month I touched on the increase in Postage which just happens to coincide with a reduction in service from NZ Post. Thanks to another 7 people who will read their newsletter in full colour and in the comfort of their home. Is this the early signs of the future. Once again it was good to see so many of you at the Clubs AGM. We now have several different people on the Committee. Welcome to them as we look forward to their individual input to the Committee of our Club.

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter CHAIRMAN’S REPORT JULY 2017 I would like to begin my augural Chairman’s Report by paying tribute to our retiring Chairman, Graham Pate who has given so much to our Car Club as a committee person, club captain and chairman.. Graeme Luxford who retires from the Treasurer’s Role and a committee member of long standing.. We will miss your wisdom, experience and knowledge Graeme.. Bronja McInally to whom nothing is a problem. Thank you ALL for what you have done and equally your offers of assistance for the future. Thanks to all those who attended our AGM and welcome to the new and the old new committee members who have volunteered their time. Let’s see if we can make a difference in the next twelve months. The AGM was a contentious meeting which probably went on longer than planned. Lots of opinions expressed and a vote taken to support the KM Ford – this is the Katherine Mansfield replica car to be built and installed at the Hamilton Gardens. It was clear the majority of members did not support a financial donation to assist with the cost and we will ensure this project is complete at no cost to the Club. It is important to remember our Club is run on democratic rule and we need to respect each other’s opinions win, loose or draw! Let’s not be divided as a Club just because your beliefs or opinions differ from someone else’s. Finally, thanks for the vote as Clubman of the year. I had backed off a bit over the past twelve months due to business commitments and thought there were others who had done a lot! Running the Club and making things happen is a team effort and the best accolade members can make is by participating in the various activities and events and coming along. We have a strong Club which is changing and we will always welcome fresh ideas and contributions from any member. I say take a risk, dare to be different, today is the first day of the rest of your life.

Subject: The Art Collector's Wife

Joke

A New York Attorney representing a wealthy art collector called his client. "I have some good news, and I have some bad news." The art collector replied, "I've had an awful day. Give me the good news first." The lawyer said, "Well, I met with your wife today, and she informed me that she just invested $5,000 in two pictures that she thinks will bring a minimum of $15 million to $20 million, and I think she could be right." Saul replied enthusiastically, "Well done! My wife is a brilliant businesswoman! You've just made my day. Now I know I can handle the bad news. What is it?" The lawyer replied, "The pictures are of you and your secretary." 5

Hi all; Just a quick note about the new Vintage Car Club of New Zealand facebook page. Yes, it’s online now and includes some very interesting stories. The next step is to get as many people as possible to LIKE the page. 1) For those who already have a facebook account: Go to the VCC facebook page and LIKE it. Posts will then appear in YOUR facebook stream and you can share them with your friends 2) For those who don’t have a facebook page or don’t want to set up an account: Click on the link below and then save it in bookmarks in your internet browser. You will then have easy access to the page whenever you want to see the latest posts. I am also looking for pictures and just a couple of paragraphs about the photo from club events around the country. These will make interesting posts. One of the successes of facebook is that there are few words included in each post but many of the posts include a link to the full story. As an example of the simple info I am looking for, there is a video on the site with this explanation above it:

“Recent Wairarapa veteran rally motoring to Martinborough. Dodge fire engine of Bruce Hutton passing Ian and Fay Chamberlain's Reo. Taken from Diane and Geoff Quarrie's GWK” That is plenty of words to go with a video. Just a couple of points: a) the facebook page will include upcoming events but it’s not a buy, sell and exchange page. There are other avenues for that information. b) The page will work well if the content is regularly updated and interesting. I intend to post at least 1 story every day and that is why I need as many photos as possible (with a short explanation) from members. Here is the link to the page: https://www.facebook.com/ vintagecarclubofnewzealand/ or type Vintage Car Club of New Zealand into Facebook search. I have summarised all of this as simply as I can in a short piece that is attached to this email. I am hoping that you can include it in your next magazine. We would be very appreciative if you could mention this initiative at your next club meeting and encourage as many of your members as possible to LIKE the page. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to email. Thank you for your support

Hello I'm Colin the organizer of Brits at the Beach and the Brits Job Tours. Brits at the Beach celebrates everything British in a 3 day festival at Whangamata based around cars and motorbikes, while the Brits Job Tours take kiwi couples or friends on self drive tours around the U.K in late model Minis. We are moving Brits at the Beach from Spring to Summer (February) due to the inclement weather we've suffered over the past few years. This year is our last spring-time Brits and we are looking for a way to spread that message to as many car loving folk as possible, as well as introducing them to the adventure of a lifetime, which is a Brits Job Tour. Is there a way I can extend our invitation to your members to join us, perhaps through a mailing list or members magazine? I'm sure they would enjoy themselves thoroughly! If so, can we get a rate card please? We certainly don't want to spam you, so if this email has come through to you and you're no longer responsible for this activity in your club, could I ask that you forward it to whomever is responsible, or drop me an email back here and I'll make sure your email address is removed from our database. Thank you very much for your assistance. I look forward to hearing from you.

STEAM CARS Reading about steam “cars” (perhaps vehicles) became interesting as all built commercially are part of our vintage fleet The first was French and was built to carry a gun in 1770and the last a General Motors-built car in 1970. This made 200 years of steam “cars”. The General Motors car was a prototype to do feasibility studies rather than one intended to market. There were 213 odd manufacturers from 11 different countries including Australia. A large number only built a prototype and an even larger number a few cars over two or three years. It seems no research has come up with the number of cars each manufacturer produced In general terms some 20,000 steam cars were sold between 1889and 1979. Stanleys or Stanleypatented (locomotives or Mobiles) making up about half of this total. Whites were probably the next claiming 1500 cars per year. The production lasted 11 years so I guess it was one or two years that they produced 1500 cars. Serpollet a French manufacturer 1897-1907 was probably next but with numbers well behind Whites. Most of us Vintage Car folk think of the Stanley Steamer when thinking of steam cars. As mentioned, Stanley had a connection with 50% of the steam cars produced. The name Stanley Steamer is also interesting . There were two Stanleys (two brothers –F.E and F.O.) They produced drawings for a steam car in 1896.Their first car was finished in 1897 and appeared to be scrapped the following winter then two more cars were make for their own use. The Stanley twins had much pleasure from these cars and were constantly asked to sell. F>O. finally gave in and sold for $600 in 1898 knowing he could build a better one. My guess is F.E. also sold his. Also in 1898 the brothers went to the first motor show held in New England at Mechanics Hall in Boston. They were not exhibiting with their remaining car but were invited to take part in trials where they made such an impression they received about 200 inquiries to produce and sell. Of interest there was a Whitney steam car on show that was so similar to the Stanley one that one had to be a copy of the other. Also about the time the Stanleys were being offered a huge amount for their patents and manufacturing set up. They did not take offers seriously but at the request of the buyer to be F.o. did ship the car to New York to demonstrate to people who could afford to buy. The sale did happen for $250000 but the buyers had problems and split. The result was Locomobile & Mobile cars were manufactured using Stanley patents manufacturing rights. One’s mind boggles as to what patents were sold , restraint of sale and the Stanleys working for Locomobile and Mobile while planning to start manufacturing themselves. Legal action was taken against the Stanleys regarding patents but fell over due to a technicality and by the time it came up again it didn’t matter and the Stanleys turned their engine 90 degrees and drove straight on to a “diff” as we know today. Perhaps this was the only patent of Stanleys that was sold by them for all that money that meant something They did patent lots of other smaller designs and parts for their cars. However ,even a bit of copying , patent problems and working for companies while planning to go into opposition to them can’t detract from the Stanley’s abilities to make and sell steam cars. 8

Only a few steam cars were sold in new Zealand . A Model T Ford was about one fifth of the price of a steamer. Reading the history of the Napier/ Taupo Road, the first car to “make it” was a 1903 Locomobile steam car. NOTE: At least three books tell different stories, dates and facts. The Stanley museum cover the Stanley history extensively, but for the production of the cars seems to rely on a publication called ‘Horseless Carriages ’which may or may not have been accurate. I believe the most accurate book is ‘Steam Cars’ (Lord Montague & Anthony Bird) as it shows no bias between steam engines and internal combustion engines and uncovers so many myths. Terry Pidduck

Motorcycle Following on from my report last month we now have a date for the South Waikato County Run which will be on Saturday the 14th October. We have been speaking to Murray regards progress on his plane and he says it is not yet ready to fly as he still need to finish covering it. He said we are most welcome to visit and we also understand he has purchased another old plane that require a fair amount restoring. I was speaking to Mark McLennan the other day and was telling me that he and another Waikato member Ian Brown had just returned from doing the Brass Monkey Rally in the South Island. From the report I have read of the trip, Marks first, was not for the Faint Hearted. As they were going over Dansey Pass it start snowing fairly heavily and as it is fairly steep climb the biggest problem Mark had on his modern bike was first the get traction, so he end up riding in the water table hoping that he didn’t come across a large drain and secondly was to try not to fall off, however they all managed to stay up right. Mark says he might think of going again next year, but it will take a while to get over the 3150ks ride, mostly in poor weather. I know what it is like riding in snow as many a times in England you would find yourself riding in the wheel tracks of other vehicles and going as fast as you dare only to find that a truck was right behind you and it was very hard to find some where to pull over. The run I was hoping to have in July has not materialized, however I have penciled in a ride or get-together for Sunday the 13th August. I would still like to hear of places that you know of that we can visit. In the meantime safe riding Peter Spiller

1960 FORD MK2 ZEPHYR AUTOMATIC , 2.6L STRAIGHT 6, Registration CO4208 Everyone seems to have a Mk. 2 Zephyr story. They have either owned one, their grandpa had one, or they were possibly conceived in one. ' Liz' puts a smile on my face every time I drive her. There is a rawness, an honest sound, the smell of petrol like your lawnmower, the odd fart. When you drive her people smile at you, give you the thumbs up, talk to you randomly at service stations, tell you about their grandma. I've found the response most positive from roadworkers wearing flouro jackets, old ladies out walking their dog, primary school kids at pedestrian crossings. All this is a refreshing change from the customary single figure salute from an agitated driver stuck in rush hour traffic. I've slowed down to smell the daisies. Her registration plate, CO4208 is testament to Liz's originality. The ownership papers, filled out in fountain pen, start to tell the story of her arduous journey. The miles that she has travelled, the places that she has been, the many tinkerers who have tampered with her moving parts. My own journey with cars started at an early age. To my recollection I have owned around 35 cars; maybe more. You either have the car gene or you don't. To my calculation I would be a wealthy man if it wasn't for cars, beer, and other minor indiscretions. Of late we have been seen out on a number of journeys, having recently going out to dinner, and attended Rockfest in Hamilton. We shall be accompanied this evening by a carload of 16 year old girls, including my daughter Xanthe, to attend the Cambridge High School Ball. Let's hope the boys are impressed. I look forward to introducing you to Liz and attending club activities. I wish to join in your knowledge, and many exaggerated stories, Thanks for the opportunity, Ian McHarg, new member 10

Double 50 2017 Report

Hugh McInally

Did you enter the Double 50 this year? If not, then you missed out on a doozy!!. Fifty two cars entered this year’s rally. Yes, I know it is down on last year and we could talk all day long about the reasons, but we won’t, as that conversation has been beaten to death over recent years. It’s held on a long weekend that’s the reason. The club members are getting old, that’s the reason. Traffic out of Auckland to the Waikato is a nightmare so Aucklander’s are not entering, that’s the reason and so the reasons go on and on. What the hell, is it all about the numbers or about making the weekend enjoyable for those that entered? I think it’s the latter. Did Graham & Heather Boswell, Graham & Julie Rickard achieve that result? No!! They overachieved it. They must have been talking to someone upstairs as the weather was perfect for motoring. One out of the bag considering what had been dished up a few days previous. Saturday night dinner found 52 individuals sitting down to a two course meal at the clubrooms. I won’t go on, except to say thanks to all those that assisted Bronya and I to make the night a success. Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening. Fifty two cars set off at half minute intervals (?) with the first car away at 10am from the clubrooms. We were number 47 towards the end of the pack. We’re pretty confident these days and prepare ourselves with Bronya writing special instructions on Postit notes and sticking them to the dash. We had yellow sticky notes all along the dash of the Austin Healey. Dare I make a comment to my better half that “they’ll blow off once we are out on the open road” She who is to be obeyed was right, they didn’t budge. One tricky instructions at the beginning around Cambridge saw one being removed and screwed up. Aren’t we are lucky to live in the Waikato when it comes to motoring? We travelled South through some roads we had never been down going the very long way to Kihikihi where we did straight line navigation. From there we travelled towards Pirongia and progressed along back roads to Whatawhata. After filling up with gas at Whatawhata, instructions had us heading towards Te Kowhai with still four instructions to go and us loaded with confidence. “we have this sussed Bronya”. We passed Te Kowhai school on our right where a few rally entrants cars were parked. “Looks like that’s where we have lunch?” By this time we were getting hungry, but nearly there, or so I thought. As we headed towards Ngaruawhaia rally cars were coming out of a side road on our right. “I suppose we will turn off to our left and do a circle back towards Te Kowhai and lunch eh?” Ten minutes on and we realised we were lost when we got on the Waingaro road. A quick U turn and we decided to motor back to the Te Kowhai school for lunch. Where did we go wrong?? In simple terms we mucked up a “bear left”. By then we knew one thing, we weren’t going to win. What the hell, a lovely drive it was. Lunch consumed along with a good dose of “oh you did that wrong, you should have done…………..” from fellow competitors and we were ready for the next half. We turned left out of Te Kowhai school car park and headed towards Whatawhata and 14

First car away is Dave and Mary Thomson in their 1926 Model T and beside them is Ken and Shirley Foot in their 1937 Buick.

from there basically the back roads to Ohaupo and then back roads to Cambridge. Instructions had us arriving at Thornton Rd with two Postit stickers still on the dash. One with the name of a road we needed to find and the other with a silent check we had to find. We came up to McLean St and there as expected, was a check point. We turned in and handed our card across. Opps!! We found out very quickly that we should have kept going down Thornton Rd as the silent check was further along with instruction when we found it. An old trick and one we fell for hook line and sinker. Well done plotters, an excellent run. What more could you want. Lovely countryside, good roads, good weather and good instructions (if followed correctly). A cuppa later and we headed home to freshen up for the dinner at Gail’s of Tamahere. Now Gail’s is a location that (I gather) the club has never used. I had heard mixed reviews but decided to try Gail’s as the alternative was turning out to be expensive by the time you paid for a venue, table cloths, sound system etc etc. Should we have been concerned? No, not at all, the food was good, the location ideal, they even had a menu at every sitting welcoming the Waikato VCC to Gail’s, a nice touch. Graham and Heather had done their job of getting sponsorship so well they had a great deal of large items to hand out from umbrellas to a bathroom vanity unit worth $1500. An auction was suggested. After the main meal was completed we were entertained by an Auctioneer that had been asked to come along and auction the sponsored items. Now there are Auctioneers and Auctioneers. The Auctioneer was also a part time comedian. We were all in hysterics. For the record the vanity unit sold for $515 with a total income from all the items totally over a $1000. 15

Desert was individually delivered to each guest. A coffee later and guests started to drift slowly away. It had been an excellent rally culminating in a great evening. A “well done must go to Graham & Heather and Graham & Julie. Hugh

Julie had people baking for the morning and afternoon teas. A big thank you to Hugh and Bronya for their efforts doing Saturday nights dinner . I would like to thank Heather for all the work she did . I probably signed her up for that but her determination and drive helped make the event a success . It takes many to make the event a success so thank you all . Graham Boswell
