Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone As the temperatures cool a little and the trees loose their leaves it must be Autumn followed by our cooler months. I encourage you all to enter this years Double 50 Rally . If you were to win there is no compulsion to plot 2018 Rally (though you may be invited to do it). The Rally is all plotted and plans are in place for Queens Birthday weekend of fun. This is the major National Calendar event. In last month Venture was the entry form so fill it out and send it in. Remember for those still learning the finer points of rallying or those who have not taken part ,they can attend the Training Day on 27th May. We have a very full program something for every taste. Remember you only get out of the Club what you put in!! So come along. Our AGM is looming in mid June. Please give some thought to who you would like to see run the Club as we move forward and into our 60th year. Maybe you would like to stand for the Committee, please put your name forward. The forms for positions are later in the magazine.

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter CHAIRMANS REPOPRT MAY 2017 Autumn is upon us now, daylight saving has gone, the mornings are now lighter and the evenings are darker, plus it is getting cooler. I hope none of our club members were affected by the bad weather we have experienced. Our Street flooded and our neighbour’s basement was flooded but everything was OK. We have returned home from the North Island Easter Rally in Auckland. We had a great weekend and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It has given us a few ideas for next year. May is a very busy month. There is something on every weekend starting with Theo De Leuw’s Veteran and Vintage Shed Raid on the 7th May. This will interest members who like the older vehicles. Then on the 14th May Hugh McInally is organising a working Bee to carry out a few jobs around our Clubrooms. On the 21st May Ian Patton is organising a “DAM” good run to the Te Awamutu Museum to see the “DAM BUSTERS” Exhibition which is being shown there. On the 27th May Greg Terrill is holding our Rally Training Day. This will shed some light on the Rally Rules and I would encourage all new members to come along and learn about straight line navigation, how to interpret rally instructions and basic timing. After our Easter Rally efforts I think Marcia and I should attend. So to brush up on your rally skills PLEASE COME ALONG, new and old members. Of course the following weekend is the Double Fifty Rally which is held over Queens Birthday Weekend. This is our Premier Event, so I would encourage all members to grab an entry form, fill it out, and come along and enjoy a day of driving your club car around our lovely Waikato Roads. This Rally is performance based not age related and there are two rally routes to cover all cars. So there is plenty to become involved with. You don’t have to attend everything, but you can if you want to, of course I would like members to attend something. We now have one Club Night before the AGM (May’s Meeting). Please think long and hard about what you can do for your club. Become involved in the running of the club. The more you put in the more you get out. Jan and Gordon are on holiday at present , so I will give a brief round up of what's happening. The club has entry Forms for Wanganui Annual Rally 3-4th June . Our Double 50 is June 3rd-4th. This appears to be entering the quieter times for many Branches. Jan will have a more detailed report in next months Magazine.
May 7th Shed Vintage & Veteran Shed Raid Start: Nordell Restorations, 157 Flat Road, Kihikihi at 10:30am, first cars to leave at 11:30. David has worked on a number of members cars including Packard, Bugatti, Riley, Vauxhall and more. Bring a picnic lunch as there will be an opportunity for a picnic at the home of Brian Baker (Te Kowhai Rd) Riley Collection. Shed will include a stop at Body Mod's (Te Rapa) where there are a number of Alan Sharp's Chryslers', possibly the Tom Andrew's Bugatti and other vintage works currently underway. This year's shed raid will finish at the veteran collection of Reese Burnett also on show will be Sue Burnett's period costume collection. A cup of tea will be available to finish of the run. The Annual General Meeting of the Veteran & Vintage Car Club (Waikato) Inc. for 2017 will be held at the Clubrooms, MacLean St, Cambridge at 8.00pm on Wednesday 14 th June 2017.
Any written nominations for officer and committee positions should be lodged with the Branch Secretary prior to the meeting. Acceptance of nominations from the floor will be subject to the nominee being present at the meeting. All positions are open for nominations, and new faces and ideas would be most welcome. We require volunteers for the club working bee that’s coming up. Can you spare a few hours on Sunday the 7th May? We have a great facility but it requires the help from members to keep it ship shape. I have the job list of things to do and the sausage for the BBQ lunch, all I need is your help If you think you can give us the time please drop me a line, if for no reason other than so we can work out how many sausages to buy. What to wear?? There are a couple of painting jobs to do so if you think you are handy with a brush, bring your old painting clothes along with you. Please mark your calendar. 23rd Vintage Venture Rally 18 March 2017 A brilliant day dawned for the Vintage Venture rally. After a prep and polish the day before the Triumph Super 7 was looking spiffing and eager to go (as was the dog). We headed off to Hamilton for the start point at Hamilton Gardens where a great array of vehicles had already gathered. Particular favourites were the Patton’s stylish Vauxhall, some very nice Model T’s and A’s and the Terrill’s Chrysler 77. We were advised that Graeme Fenn and Eryn Fail from Waihi Beach didn’t make the start as their Graham Paige chose to rearrange rings and pistons in Morrinsville on their way to the start – most unfortunate. After a short rally briefing with a rather cryptic description of this rally being ‘a little bit different’, we queued for our instructions and were on our way. Main Streets were a recurring theme, and through the day we passed through Hamilton East, Victoria Street, Pirongia township, Te Awamutu main street and Cambridge where the instructions advised us to ‘Smile, toot and wave’ as we drove through. Surprisingly the run through each main street was a breeze with the traffic lights with us most of the way and very few stops and the cars certainly attracted some attention. A few questions along the journey kept us alert and there was also a ‘spot the shapes’ activity with 4 shape stations complete with colouring pens on the roadside where we had to stop and artistically colour in the corresponding shapes on our instruction sheets. I don’t know how we didn’t even see the last one (I blame the dog – useless navigator!). It wasn’t long before we were into the countryside and on some amazing country roads which took us past Hamilton Zoo, Rotokauri, Whatawhata, Te Pahu and travelling along the Limeworks Loop Road with spectacular views and very little traffic. We all eventually arrived at our picnic lunch stop at Pirongia, where the parked cars drew swarms of camera wielding tourists that provided entertainment for the rallyists while we ate our lunches. The afternoon instructions were handed out with lucky spot prizes – and off we roared (well, 30mph at least) wending our way through Mangapiko, down the Te Awamutu main street before taking in the rolling countryside of Puahue and Rotoorangi. It was at this point unfortunately, that my driver spotted on the instructions that we were heading on to Kairangi Road. This short-circuited his brain into hillclimb mode. 14
Despite my protests that this wasn’t helping me keep count of the one-lane bridges he veered off course towards the Kairangi hill determined to see how well the little Super 7 could go up the hill. As we approached, the Super7 probably sensing the driver had this evil intent in mind - decided it didn’t want to be a hillclimb car and quickly developed a loud and ominously serious clonking beneath. With nothing visibly wrong or falling off, the driver was outnumbered by the navigator, dog and car and agreed it might be prudent to limp our way back home rather than try and continue before the clonking became something more terminal. So although we didn’t quite see the rally to the end, we had a brilliant day and really enjoyed the run we had managed to do. We were told that the rest of the run and the afternoon tea provided at the clubrooms was excellent too, with the prizegiving results being 1st Bob and Jillian Hayton (1929 Dodge DA) nd 2 Greg and Gaynor Terrill (1930 Chrysler 77) 3rd Cordon and Claire White (1928 Model A Ford) Many thanks to Mark Smith and his rally team for a really relaxing and interesting rally over some really nice driving roads and scenery.

Our Editor has asked me to draft a note for Venture outlining my role as the Membership person for the Club. Presently, our Club has 440 members, 152 of these are joint members – wives, partners – even husbands, whatever! So we have only 136 people as single members and 152 couples. Our members are from all over the Waikato and some from Thames, Tokoroa and even some from Auckland and surrounds, why wouldn’t you! Waikato is the third largest branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand. Total membership of the Vintage Car Club New Zealand is 8399 members. Canterbury is by far the largest branch with 1262 members, only 294 joint. Auckland is second, 654 members with 152 joint. Bay of Plenty is fourth behind us with 401, 135 joint. Southland 364, Hawkes Bay 342, South Canterbury 328, Marlborough 302, Wellington 283 and Nelson 285. There is a disproportionate number of Vintage Car Club members in the South Island which says a lot. At the turn of the century – that was year 2000 – we registered 347 members so we have grown about 27%. In 2000, 6537 people were members of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand, total membership has grown about 28% also. Over the last twelve months we have processed forty six new member applications. Twenty nine of these are joint, eight of these were transfers to our Club and already members of the Vintage Car Club elsewhere. We have had a pretty equivalent amount of members resign for various reasons so our membership has been pretty static in total these last twelve months. Our Open Day was successful and I have sent out six membership applications today plus one branch transfer. I would like to see us achieve five hundred members. I write to perspective members and send them some brochures we have, some membership forms for them to complete and often I get a neighbouring member to follow them up. 25th VCC National Motorcycle Rally, ‘After Rally Tour’, Feb 20th-24th 2017 Amazingly, despite an otherwise pretty rubbish Summer, once the wet Sunday was out of the way, the weather Gods were on our side, and the rest of the week was fine, hot and sunny. Time then for some serious riding, as over 60 of the original 130 entrants stayed on for all or part of the ‘After Rally Tour’ (ART). In fact so many stayed on that the organisers had even more work to do, splitting the group into two for the Mokau River boat run. To assist us in this much anticipated task, Bob H. and Jillian had filled our rally packs with comprehensive information about each day’s run—the route, and also points of interest along the way, which had all been previously provided and scoped out by the relevant route plotters. The data for Monday’s run for example, totalled 8 pages, and in keeping with the scrupulous record keeping displayed throughout the rally, every step was correctly documented, such that the participants had to be trying really hard to get themselves lost. Not to say that no one could get lost of course, as people being the fallible creatures we are, some still inadvertently managed to take the long way there or back. Monday morning, and the modern 961 Norton was dug out of hibernation for the commute to Waitomo to join the rest of the field for the ride up to Te Awamutu and environs. Using a selection of back roads to get there, some of which were new to the author, we called in to Trevor Hall Motorcycles to view his impressive array of vintage and classic ‘bikes, before repairing to the St Andrews Church car park in the centre of town. Easily within reach of several nosh houses in the main street, it wasn’t long before the EFTPOS terminals were being scraped (doesn’t have the same ring to it, as the old “ringing cash registers” does it?), and the nose bags were on for the ensuing intestinal enrichment. Tucker time over, we were off via a new bunch of back roads to Neville Davison’s farm in Otewa Road, to view his amazing private collection of cars, tractors and memorabilia. Unfortunately, recently widowed, we were lucky that Neville still allowed us to visit, and we were very privileged to meet this very humble man, and view his impressive display of treasures. Home then for me and the other Hamilton commuters, while the visitors headed for Waitomo and some welcome refreshments at Curley’s Bar etc. Tuesday, and my faithful Dommie of some 40 years acquaintenship replaced the modern electric start imposter, for the run out to Kawhia. Even this route managed to contain a couple of new roads for me, and this terrific ‘bike road over, some of us were soon exploring on foot the delights and charms of the Kawhia village. It has to be said that some others of us preferred the ambience of the corner pub instead, and a few restorative drinks in the hot sun. Post lunch, a couple of machine problems, including another puncture, saw Neville Olsens’ trailer put to good use—thanks not just to Neville, but Terry Pidduck who also performed this vital function for us over the week, as the field wended it’s way back whence the way we’d come. As far as the turn off into Harbour Road for me, as I took the shorter route back to Hamilton, while the rest of the group took the scenic route around the harbour, past the impressive Marakopa Falls etc, back into Waitomo. Wednesday and the Honda Land Yacht was dragged out so Aussie mate Paul Tyrrell could accompany my International for the ride to Mangakino via yet more foreign roads—the route plotters having done 22
another sterling job, one road over a 450m high saddle and we were in low cloud for a while before descending to the Waikato River valley, and our stop at the ‘Bus Stop’ Café by Lake Maraetai. Here the packed lunch and the lakeside ablution block were both in high demand and equally popular, and our Aussie visitors were impressed with the calm and serene lakeside vista. The official run returned via Benneydale, but Paul and I peeled off and returned via Whakamaru and the Old Taupo Road, the swing bridge at Arapuni and the Airport Road back to Hamilton East. Another fantastic day on the planet nearly over, it only remained to quaff a few celebratory ales and reflect on what had been a great ride. Thursday, and it was my turn to fill the sails of the Land Yacht and head for Mokau. Not having bothered to check the start time, well, it had been, “assemble at 9.0 and away at 9.30” every other day, so why should it be any different today? Arriving to nearly deserted Domain club rooms however, it patently was different, and the supporters tour group who were still in residence, sent me scurrying to try and catch up with the long since departed main bunch. By necessity a veil needs to be drawn over proceedings here, as with the spinnaker unfurled the Land Yacht was given its’ head on the deserted roads out to Marakopa and the coast road to Mokau. A terrific day for a ride, warm, sunny and clear, the only impediment to progress was the remainder of a huge flock of sheep being driven up the coastal road to another paddock, but as soon as they could safely be passed and back-up Graham Holmes and trailer despatched at the start of the 12 km’s of remaining gravel, it wasn’t too long before some of the tail enders were being rounded up and I could relax safe in the knowledge that the boat wouldn’t/shouldn’t go without me.
The bikes all being corralled a short walk from both cafes and the public conveniences, a brief wait ensued while the assembled throng was shuttled the 4 km’s down to the boat moored on the Mokau River. A most interesting and relaxed ride up-river followed, accompanied by tea/coffee and superb hot buttered and jammed scones, 23
, barbecued on board by a couple of willing deck hands, who insisted that we all have several each—and more than several in some cases. Meanwhile a running commentary was being kept up by the boat owner, as we motored past scores and scores of whitebait stands. Spaced every 30 metres on both sides of the river, the array was mind boggling in it’s number and variety—the poor little fish don’t seem to have much of a chance against this industrial sized overall net capacity. Informed that one stand has just changed hands for a mind-boggling $26,000 it doesn’t take much mathematical ability to work out that the new owner has to catch an absolute shed load of whitebait to make a return on investment—even at $100/kilo. A short walk in the bush by the up-river mooring point, before we’re away back down river to Mokau to sample a whitebait sandwich at the café. Even at $11 per sandwich, twenty six grand still seems vastly out of proportion to the promised rewards.. The official homeward run is via the main HW3, but such was my enthusiasm for the coastal route, Dunedin-ites Bill Veitch (Moto Guzzi Falcone) and Bruce Murray (BSA WM20), joined me in returning via Marakopa which they had eschewed on the way down, the reported gravel having apparently previously deterred them. A lot gentler pace then, as the spinnaker was reeled in and mainsail on the Land Yacht reefed, as we headed away in the brilliant afternoon sunshine. The first few km’s after the turn off at Awakino follow river flats and we were surprised to see cattle wading about belly deep in the river. Obviously news of the much-touted ‘Clean Rivers Accord’ never having penetrated this outpost of the Federated Farmers Association, our only impediment to progress was a horse float which the driver of steadfastly refused to pull over and let us past on the twisty narrow road. Eventually, gunning their lower powered mounts, the two Southerners thumped their way past this mobile chicane and normal progress restored it wasn’t long before we were back in Waitomo, where a welcome refresher awaited some of us at Curley’s Bar. This filled in the time nicely, before it was time to ride out to the Roselands function centre on Fullerton Road, for the final social dinner of the tour. A fantastic venue set high up on a farm, with views right across towards Te Kuiti, a very nice BBQ buffet was soon devoured, before the Land Yacht was fired up and launched Hamilton-wards. That left Friday for the last ride, and once again the modern 961 Commando was pulled out, this time to do the honours leading the ride via Te Kuiti to Waimiha and the derelict Endeans Saw Mill on Ongarue Stream Road. Last used in 1996, the entire site was abandoned then, and quietly decaying since, it is still much as it was back then, with invoices from the period still clipped to the office walls, and machinery and vehicles lying where they were left. A short movie shown in the adjacent Sports Club showed the mill in operation, when the area was still being logged of native timber, prior to the Pureora forest protests and the mills’ subsequent closure. On then via Ongarue and SH4, we crossed the river just short of Taumarunui and pulled up outside the Okahukura Hall. Here we had the most fantastic lunch of the week, when the people from the local Mana Ariki Marae pulled out all the stops with white table service and a thoroughly memorable feed that was hard to walk away from. Indeed there were several prostrate bodies lying on the grass recuperating in the shade afterwards. The hoped-for visit to the nearby 3.5 km 7” railway fell through due to local marae politics, so it was back to Waitomo via HW4 and Troopers Road for a final convivial reviver at Curley’s Bar. 24
So what a fantastic week for those fortunate enough to have the annual leave or time at their disposal. Mooloo Meander – April 2017 With the National Motorcycle Rally at Waitomo all over for 2017, it was time to clear the decks for our local annual two and three-wheeler event based as usual on the Branch Clubrooms at Cambridge. Friday evening’s simple meal and hob-nob got things off to a good start in welcoming the out-of-town visitors, some of whom had set up camp on the property for the night. Another great entry of sixty or so bikes ranging from Neville Olsen’s 1924 BSA, through the largest contingent of Post War British make entries to an increasing number of Teutonic and Nipponese Post 1980 machines, the car park was a joy to behold on such a glorious early April day. A really friendly atmosphere prevailed from the get-go, with lots of old mate reunions and the many newer entrants finding much to talk about and admire amongst this fine collection of fettled machinery from around the region. We have had so many interesting routes and lunch break locations over the years that it would seem to be hard for the plotters this year to find something different, but we shall see shortly. Compulsory briefing over, the first riders were soon off on their journey up Sanatorium Hill, almost to Te Miro, and down Waterworks Road to Kiwitahi on now sealed roads – glorious views and remarkably green countryside after so much recent rain. The secret squirrel timing seemed to finish around here with a wave from the roadside marshals and now we found our way via Richmond Downs and some 200 yards of gnarly full width road works at Matai (which must have been awkward on the wider tyred bikes) to Matamata. The busy main street soon negotiated, plotters had us quickly onto the Old Te Aroha Road running under the shadow of the Kaimai Range and past the small settlements along there. The sound of Hugh Anderson winding up his big Vincent along here quickened the pulse and brought us to a lunch stop in the Te Aroha Domain, where the Scouts adequately looked after the inner man and woman, in their hall. Lots of talk in the bright sunshine and some of the essential spannering on reluctant motors completed a pleasant interlude before setting off again (in my case, eventually and with the help of Don Green to sort a misfire) on the return journey. Now, ‘Right at Diagonal Road’ – was this the unmarked first intersection or was it further on? Yes it was – further on – quite a lot actually, but not as much as some thought, they ending up eventually mislaid in Waharoa! ‘Cross Highway 27 With Care’, and Oh dear, the misfire is back again, but this seems more like a fuel flow problem. Nursed it for a while at slower speeds, but finally it expired at the Walton Road intersection and would not restart. Fortunately for me (but not for him I guess), Grant Rennie was waiting for backup having lost all the air from his rear tyre at this point and was able to give me a push start resulting in renewed life. Good job it did start, because there wouldn’t have been room on the trailer for both of us! Enough life returned anyway to see us through verdant Scotsmans Valley and slowly up Pukemoremore Road to Fencourt before expiring again just as we entered MacLean Street and the clubrooms driveway – perhaps the only entrant to ever push-in to the finish and later be awarded the right to plot next year’s event! Certainly needed the cup of tea awaiting in the clubrooms after that experience! The Mooloo ‘After Rally Dinner’ is always a warm, friendly affair in the clubrooms and Classique Catering never lets us down, providing lots of quantity and choice of quality food after a tiring day’s riding. After arranging this wonderful day’s outing, Peter Spiller and Mark McLennan dispensed the various class awards along with comments about next year’s event being the 25th Mooloo Meander which needed some special treatment - before passing the baton on to yours truly!
