From the Chair Hello out there, What a marvellous job Willie did on the Rex Porter Rally. I know it is not a 'one man job' and the team behind him need applauding too, but all teams need a leader for the team to work efficiently, and I take my hat off to Willie and his helpers. You surely must agree that even though the weather was not kind on rally day, the organiser, the marshals, the caterers and all others involved brought together a great day for your enjoyment. It was with very mixed feelings that I elected not to be at the rally, but to be in Auckland representing this branch at the National Executive Meeting. Whether we like it or not, we are not an independent Club but a branch of the V.C.C. of N.Z. If our branch does not have a representative at the V.C.C. A.G.M. and the National Executive Meeting, we really have no say as to the direction the club is heading, nor knowledge of the reasoning behind decisions made and certainly cannot complain about the actions taken by the executive which affect our branch. I firmly believe that as your committee, we have a duty to our branch to have a representative present. I elected to attend. As part of the changes being made by the National Body, application forms for membership will be able to be found on line. This will allow people that know no-one in the Branches to make an application and forward it to their chosen Branch for processing. Because of the great amount of independence branches have, some applicants may have to wait longer than others for the application to be processed. Apparently some branches require a prospective member to attend a minimum of one to three club meetings or outings before their application will be approved by the branch, whereas another branch will not approve the application unless the person is the owner of a V.C.C. eligible vehicle. The National Body is looking into starting a 'face-book page' that will have a direct link from their web-site. There was a proposition that all members particulars would also be available 'on-line' – there was discussion and no confirmation of this occurring was made at the meeting. 6
The National Body is looking at having a V.C.C. National Day. This will be held in conjunction with a National Charity’s annual fund-raising day e.g. cancer patients, stroke victims etc. More on this in the future as it is in the process of development. This branch was being actively encouraged by the National Speed Steward to have a speed rally incorporating the local 'Drag Strip' and a 'Selected Hill Climb' in the same rally. Tell your committee your thoughts about us holding such a rally. That is me for the present. I am looking forward to an 'Indian Summer' but just in case it is like our past summer (didn't quite make it), Sheila and I will be looking for 'specials' to more sunny climes. In friendship, John. Below: Graham and Annette Clark’s 1924 Ford T penned by the talented Doug Curtis. Hayley says “Henry Ford had a board and a piece of tin. The board he sawed and the tin he bent, wound it up and away it went.”

March Club Captain’s Report: The last month has been quite busy – Club member John Cameron recently held a series of auctions following the sale of his Carrington House property. I attended the first clearing sale of plant and machinery and the large crowd included several of of our members. The second auction featured a large collection of diecast car models of all sizes. I particularly fancied the D-type Jaguar and the Maserati 250F. The big crowd on the inspection day included many serious collectors and it was obvious that there were not going to be any bargains. Also featured was an extensive series of metal signs advertising fuels and similar. Recently John Clark and I were asked to be judges at a Concours held by the Sunbeam Club at the Copthorne Hotel. There were around 40 cars including a selection of Sunbeam Tigers and Sunbeam Alpines as well as Rapiers and older Sunbeams from the 1950s. Their judging process was very formal and thorough and included a vehicle’s originality – a bit difficult as some of the Tigers had been converted from Alpines. Every scratch and mark resulted in points off – I don’t think this would be appreciated at our events. Our annual Rex Porter Rally has just been concluded and was organised this year by Willie James. 26 competitors turned out for this – our premier event. Persistent light rain plagued the whole day although the temperature was mild. Interesting cars present included Francis and Gaye Pointon’s 1934 Ford V8 Coupe. At one point I thought I saw Bonnie and Clyde sitting in it. Another interesting vehicle was Herb Fox’s 1924 Dodge truck complete in period livery. I could just picture this Dodge, loaded with a family’s entire possessions, trekking it’s way across the Oklahoma dustbowls of the 1930s. It was nice to see Martin and Asrina Hutchison out again with their Zephyr taxi. The event included a trip to Martinborough by way of the Ponatahi and Longbush Valleys and a northern excursion through Wangehau Valley and Mauriceville. The Masterton Men’s Shed provided an excellent venue for our BYO lunch. Gary Lang 8
Winter Motorcycle Reliability Trial 13th & 14th MAY 2017 This year’s two day trial will be an overnight stay at Akitio Beach. Organizers Beth and Neville Taylor. Your entry form is on page 21 of this magazine.
Proposed Veteran Rally Event The long running Triangular Veteran Rally which involved the Wellington, Horowhenua and Wairarapa branches has unfortunately, for a number of reasons, come to an end. Our branch has never had a dedicated Veteran Rally on its annual schedule of events and to this end I contacted all our branch members who have veteran vehicles to get an indication of their support. I am pleased to say that the positive response was 100%. Hence at this stage a rally has been planned to be held on Sunday 23rd April. We will assemble at the Greytown Rugby clubrooms at 9.30am for a low key fun day. Lunch will be BYO or can be purchased at the venue. Notice of the event has been passed on to neighbouring branch veteran vehicle owners and the response has been positive. The gathering will also give us a chance to have discussion on the format of future events. Will Holmes 9
February Mid Week Run to Martinborough Not the best of days - typical of our so called summer—but a enthusiastic group gathered at the club rooms on Thursday 23rd February for a run to Martinborough via Gladstone and Long Bush. No problems were encountered on the way and we met at the Pukemanu Tavern where we enjoyed a very sociable time and a most enjoyable lunch. Members made their own way home. New members Simon and Andrea Byrne brought along Andrea’s mother who was visiting from the UK and had only arrived a day or two prior to the run. Participants on the day were: Simon & Andrea Byrne & Mum—Armstong Siddeley Ruby & Will Holmes and Chisholm Evelyn - Austin John& Sheila Clark—Daimler Graham & Annette Clark - Model T Natalie & Geoff Denovan Robyn & Murray Dewar—Triumph Peter & Nola Groves - Austin Annette Hickling and Anne Slater—Modern Myrna & Tony Lane—Mercedes 350 SL Barbara & Gary Lang—Modern Jean & Tom Mitchelmore - Morris Minor Lynne & Phil Smith—Modern Julie & Roger Thomas—Morris Minor Kevin Troy & Bev Cameron— Triumph Stag

Club Night March 6th—Pat Dutton Our guest speaker Debra Kiernan gave us an interesting talk on Dog Training using the clicker method as used now by all professional trainers. A quick and successful way of getting your dogs to do what you want. As dogs are not allowed in the club rooms Debra had to do her demonstration with two “human dogs”, but to see this done, in the right environment, provides amazing results. Debra helped me with one of my dogs who wanted to beat up every dog she saw, after a few trips with Debra around the streets, she now wants to go off and play with them all at the park which makes my life easier. I trust that some of the audience who have dogs may have learnt something. The most important thing is never hit your dog it only makes them frightened of you and you will never get them to be obedient. PS The human dogs did well. One was a disobedient little madam named Pat, if she had a tail she would have wagged it off just to get a treat. The other was a dear old lapdog named John who panted his way round the club rooms and did what he was supposed to do. From a member of the audience. 11
2017 Rex Porter Rally—March 11th By Kevin Ball Despite unpleasant weather, 24 entrants turned out for the annual Rex Porter Memorial Rally run by the Wairarapa branch of the Vintage Car Club on Saturday. And what a motley crew they turned out to be. They ranged in age from their teens to the mid-80s in vehicles that looked like something out of a Mad Max movie to the svelte lines of a 1955 Riley. Overall winners John and Marian Garrett, from Marton, who travelled in a 1975 Triumph, received their trophies from rally organiser Willie James at a celebration dinner on Saturday night. Rain persisted all day, and a lunch break in the shelter of the Henley Men’s Shed provided welcome relief, especially for those on two wheels. Highlight for many was the entry of Alec O’Hara and Maysie Pyatt in a 1933 Austin 7. They dressed in period costume for the occasion, which earned them a special prize At the other end of the cuteness scale was the “Mad Max” 1924 Dodge Brothers 4 driven by Herb Fox, from Nelson. Herb’s wife Julie was born in the back of a ’24 Dodge so when they spotted this one rotting in a paddock they bought it for sentimental reasons, with a view to restoring it. That never happened, but the couple have a lot of fun, and have travelled huge distances in the old-timer, distinctive because of its drab brown paint. Herb reckons that it is a special brew made for the iron works at Onekaka and that every barn in the area is coated in the same paint. The rear section of the truck was built, Herb says, by the local blacksmith. As for the “rocket tubes” on the cab roof he’s a little more evasive, mumbling something about Isis and terrorists. Second overall in Saturday’s rally was another young member, Ryan Dewes in a 1927 Model T Ford, followed by Peter Groves in his 1924 Austin 20. Class prizes went to Ryan Dewes (Vintage), Martin Hutchinson, 1936 Plymouth Coupe (post-Vintage), Howard Sims, 1928 Model A pickup (post-Vintage truck), Gary Wall, 1955 Riley, (post-war), David Henwood, 1952 BSA B33 (post-war motorcycle), John Garrett (post-60), Doug Curtis, 1945 Chev truck (Best GM vehicle). 12

Cover Story—1933 Austin 7 I purchased the Austin 7 in December 2016 from a local resident who had done the restoration to a high standard. The car has a 7hp motor (which is a lot less than most ride on lawnmowers). The restoration was completed in 1990. From 1990 – 2016 the Austin had only travelled 1000 miles. At the time of purchase the car had been sitting for a number of years but since I have owned it I have been driving it on a regular basis. The Rex Porter rally was the first long run I have taken it on. Maysie and I enjoyed dressing up for the rally and we were delighted to receive a prize for this. We were blown away by people’s reactions to us wearing period clothing. Even though we did not complete the rally, due to a fuel issue, this has been the only problem I have experienced with the car to date. I am thoroughly enjoying driving the car and look forward too many more rallys in it. Alec O’Hara
Thanks Alec—so glad to hear you are enjoying the VCC. The sign in the window reads, “Runs on hopes and dreams”. Very philosophical ! 16

National Motorcycle Rally – February 2017 Dave Henwood, Willis St Clair and I travelled together to attend the 2017 VCC National motorcycle rally held at Waitomo. Dave suggested that we could break the trip by staying at his and Angela’s beach unit in Wanganui. I was keen as I could meet Dave at Wanganui Electroplaters in person, as I have had heaps of nickel plating done over the years but have never met him in person plus it was a good excuse to drop more parts for plating. The stay at Dave’s and Angela’s unit was great and I would recommend anyone wanting to stay in Wanganui, to contact Dave. On Friday, we all travelled through rain to Waitomo and registered for the rally, booked into the Glow-worm Motels where Howard and Marion Sims and Neville and Beth Taylor, were also staying. Saturday was the main rallying day with the weather being warm and dry (superb motorcycling conditions). Dave and I travelled the long route while Willis was on the short route. The day comprised of riding through back country roads with lunch arranged at Pio Pio School. Back to the motel and get ready for dinner and entertainment at Woodlyn Park (a great venue for a large gathering). Sunday was a social ride and the Team’s gymkhana. As the weather was wet we didn’t do any motorcycling. That night was prize giving, again at Woodlyn Park. At the venue, Dave suggested that we keep the table we were sitting at clear, as he wanted room to store all his prizes which he was going to win (yeah right!). Anyhow the outcome was Dave was not only first in the Post 60’s class but came away with the Montagu Trophy, which is the top prize for this event, so the empty table space was filled. Continued……..…. 18
The Wairarapa branch did very well in the prize pool with the following results; Dave Henwood – Montagu Trophy and 1st Post 60’s class – Honda XL500 Peter Bull – 1st Vintage class – Norton Model 18 Ray Cleary Best 2 Stroke – James Teams Event (based on points accumulated from Saturdays rally) Maureen Bull and Bill Munro (long time rally supporters) cut the 25th Rally anniversary cake. On Monday we travelled back to the Wairarapa, ready for work on Tuesday. My thanks go to Willis St Clair who at 87 (the oldest rally entrant) did a remarkable job of driving Dave and myself, with bikes to and from the rally. Graham Reidy Below: The Winners: Peter and Shona Bull, Dave Henwood (centre) and Ray Cleary.
Thanks Graham for sharing your impressions. Great to hear that the motorcyclists are having fun too. Editor
