From your Chairman I think that this will be my last epistle for the year. Well I think that it is, but then I have been wrong before – admittedly not often. I suppose that you have heard that there is only one 'skite' in my family and it is not me. It is my father and he 'skites' about me. Enough of my joking about. Guy Fawkes celebrations for the year have come and gone with not too much hassle reported for indiscriminate use of the fireworks. Maybe the message has got through that fireworks are not toys and can be potentially dangerous – if not lethal. When will that message get through about cars?? My apologies for changing the dates of our November rally from the first to the second weekend. This was not a convenient change for some people but was made because of the number of other functions that clashed on the first weekend – one being the AMP show. The Peter Chisholm Economy Run was, despite the fickle weather, held on Sunday 13th and attracted the attendance of 12 cars – including the Daimler. Of those, nine cars were entered and competed for the two trophies available. I am sure that the results will be published elsewhere in this newsletter. Sorry, you will have to keep reading more than just this page to find out who won what. We all know that the festive season is looming on the horizon but I am not about to wish you all 'All The Best' etc. etc. etc. yet, as I hope to see all of you at the next club night on December 5 th. Come along for a 'Nog ‘n Natter' and enjoy each other’s company. Sheila and I will see you at the door, to not only welcome you but, to encourage you to fork out a couple of dollars – or five – for a raffle full of Christmas cheer. For those of you who, for reasons I may not be aware of, cannot come to the December Club night, my Best Wishes do go out to you and I sincerely hope that we will meet in the up in the coming year, if not at the Christmas luncheon. My inspiration has run out, I am feeling tired and my G & T awaits – so bye for now. In friendship, John C 6

From your Club Captain This month we have the Peter Chisholm Economy Run organised by John Clark and the Gold Medal Motor Cycle event. 27 entries have been received for the Gold Medal so far with more expected. The Mauriceville Fair is on Sunday December 4th so please bring your vintage or classic vehicle for our display. Bring your own picnic lunch or lunch can be bought at the Fair. Our annual Christmas lunch is at Lansdowne House on Sunday December 11th. This is always a most enjoyable occasion. The New Year starts with our annual Coastal Run, this time to Akitio beach. Full details in this magazine. On our November club night Vice Chairman Willie James gave a very interesting talk on his recent visit to Europe to attend a family function. Visits to several motor and military museums were included in the itinerary. A computer presentation illustrated the talk. The ability to take photos on cell phones makes recording travel so much simpler now. It was great to have several new members present on the evening. Gary Lang

WANTED - Farm Paddock to hold gymkhana themed rally. Paul Furkert and Andrew Dittmer are looking to organise a 'Bent Sprint' for an upcoming rally. This is a variant of a gymkhana, where the winner is the driver who is most consistent. We are looking for a farm paddock (or paddocks) where we could set out a course of around 1 mile in length, ideally starting near a woolshed (for shelter and toilets). If any of our farming members would be interested in possibly holding the event on their farm (or know of a farm where we could hold such a rally) please let Paul (paul.furkert@xtra.co.nz or 379 5355) or Andrew (dittys@xtra.co.nz or 3796967) know. Full details of the event will be worked out in conjunction with the landowner (time of year, course layout etc.) This request was first made in the November magazine, but to date no response. Paul and Andrew want to expand the types of events that our branch offer to members - and their efforts are fully supported by your committee. To all our farming members (or those who have farming friends) if you have a paddock that could possibly be suitable please get in touch with Paul or Andrew. Full event details will be worked through with the landowner, including all health and safety concerns (the VCC Branch Manual provides comprehensive guidelines for holding events such as a "Bent Sprint" and these will be followed by Paul & Andrew).

Memories Because we’re usually in our cars we tend to miss out on photos of our vehicles on club runs. Starting from this issue Kevin will make available images that appear in our magazine. These will be delivered by email and will cost $5 each, all proceeds to go towards our annual Christmas dinner. Members can save the images onto a flashdrive and have them printed at the Stationery Warehouse or similar. Great Christmas gifts! As an introductory offer, any of Kevin’s photos that have appeared in any copy of the Zenith this year are included. If a photo of your car did not appear don’t despair. We may still have images on file. Phone Kevin at (06) 377 1236 or email wtakevin@xtra.co.nz. 9

HELP!! A REQUEST from ASHBURTON BRANCH Hi John, Re our phone conversation of 15th July. I am in the very early stages of organising a veteran tour of the north Island to take place in approx two years. It will be restricted to vehicles from the veteran class, some of which will probably be of the one or two cylinder variety. We hope to avoid main roads as much as possible, even when this may increase distances to be travelled to get from A to B. Entrants will expect routes travelled to contain unsealed roads and possibly tracks, shallow fords would not be a problem. As I am unfamiliar with roads and traffic conditions in the Wairarapa I would appreciate any assistance your branch could offer, especially with a route taking us preferably about 100 kms per day on back roads taking us north to the area covered by the Bay of Plenty branch. Any suggestions regarding accommodation along the way would also be gratefully received , Shearers quarters , motels, cabins etc. Any of your local members would be welcome to join us as we pass through your area. Thank you for your consideration in this matter, Regards David Oakley, Club Captain, Ashburton branch. Dear Wairarapa Members This is published in the hope that our members can assist David.. Please contact him directly and let me know if you have. If no-one contacts him I will, but in my ignorance of driving veteran cars and my lack of knowledge of the area, I do not know how much value I would be to him. David would like instructions from the Remutaka Hill to Martinborough and up the east to connect with the Hawkes Bay Central Area. Thanks, John Clark.

Peter Chisholm the person Peter was born in Masterton. He became a chemist and ran a business in Carterton for many years. He was also mayor of Carterton. After he retired he and his wife Evelyn returned to Masterton and in 1992 they joined the Wairarapa branch of the VCC. When they joined they rallied in a 1947 Austin 10. He eventually added a 1930 Chev which he purchased from Neville Warren which had had a “ground up” restoration and a fully restored 1913 Model T (from Pahiatua). Peter and Evelyn were very much involved with the branch and Peter served several terms on the branch committee as Club Captain and as Treasurer, this position he held until his death in 2004. He and Evelyn organised a number of “away” weekends (usually in November ) and took groups of members on longer runs to Hawera, Havelock North and Wanganui staying overnight. These were always fun weekends. After Peter died Tony Lane took over the Treasurer’s position and also decided to continue the “away” tours. It was decided that it should be called the Peter Chisholm Memorial Rally and to provide a competitive aspect to the weekend it became an “economy run”. A cup donated by Dawn and Barry Gillum for the winner of a Reliabilty run became the main trophy. Evelyn was invited to take part in these runs and in order to retain the “fun” aspect she decided to provide a “Hard Luck” trophy called the ‘Bummer Award’. Both cup and trophy have been awarded ever since and Evelyn still takes part in these runs.

Peter Chisholm Memorial Economy Run 13th November 2016 It was nearly 20 years ago that I bought a 1967 Mustang. I had wanted one since I was a teenager back in the ‘60s so it was a bucket-list thing to do. After a few years of ownership I became increasingly nervous about owning it, because I kept overhearing our son Sam telling people that he was getting the Mustang when I die. Now, Sam happens to be a butcher and has an arsenal of extremely sharp knives and so I was worried that he might run out of patience waiting for me to go naturally, I sold him the car. It seemed the pragmatic thing to do. Anyway, we had this economy run to go on, my van was out of WOF, so I asked Sam if we could borrow the Mustang and he readily agreed. Well, at least he readily agreed after he learnt the car would be returned with a full tank of petrol. The expensive 95 stuff too. And so we gathered at Solway with full petrol tanks for the start. Not many of us unfortunately. We started by heading south on a course that included Martinborough, Gladstone, Taueru and then a stop for lunch at John and Sheila Clark’s home for lunch. The afternoon section took us to the Mauriceville area, then it was back to the finish at Solway again to fill our tanks, note mileages, then drive to the clubrooms to await the result. The route was a pleasant one, good roads and very little traffic. There were no checks, timed sections or tricky navigation conundrums. Just a straight forward run. I’d like to relate some tales of woe, of breakdowns, wrong turnings and cars hopelessly lost, of incompetent navigators and less than perfect driving but sadly I can’t. It seemed to be a day when nothing much went wrong. Well almost nothing much – there was a small mishap but it happened just before the run got under way so I won’t count that. Thank you John for organising the run and, with Sheila, providing our lunch venue. The turnout was disappointing with only 10 cars, of which 9 were competing for the trophy, but for those who made the effort it was an enjoyable drive. 12

Congratulations to Alec and Simon O’Hara who won the winner’s trophy and congratulations/commiserations to Mary Buick who won the ‘Bummer’ trophy. David Hunter Left: Alec and Simon O’Hara won the cup for best in economy.

Right: Mary Buick being presented with the “bummer” or “hard luck” award. Mary started the day with a bang! literally.

1934 Ford v8 5 Window Coupe Affectionately known as our Wee 8 coupe [thanks Neville]. I purchased it in 1998 from Dick Tydda, Hinau Gully Road, Carterton, in a dismantled condition, but complete with many spares. Dick had purchased the car some years earlier from Hawkes Bay with the idea of “Hot Rodding” it, but a marriage breakup and a change of direction saw it come on the market just at the right time for me having just sold my ‘46 Ford sedan. The car has been restored as Henry built it with a trunk, one wiper and one horn, i.e. a standard coupe. Wherever possible genuine old parts have been used rather than reproduction parts! Even if this means a few imperfections! A lot of time was spent on the body which is properly panelled and leaded as original. A challenge for me was to remake the fabric roof, as a steel cover had been riveted on! I lost count of how many holes I welded up with my mig! Another challenge was the engine which had been severely frost damaged, this being the reason the car was laid up in the first place! A replacement was eventually found and rebuilt. Over the years it has slowly come together and was finally finished in 2014 for the V8 Nationals in Masterton. Unfortunately when the engine was started for the first time it had very low oil pressure and checks revealed the problem was serious so the car was locked away in disgust! Since then I have built the BC special and done a few other things. However this winter a major effort was made, the engine has been stripped, the problem found and fixed, and its been refitted again and running very nicely at last! The car is finally finished, vinned, registered and on the road! A bonus was that we were able to retain the original plates [very difficult if you haven’t got the paperwork to prove they belong to the car]. I could write a book about the problems associated with vinning a car with no ID plates or tags on the car and the original number plates, but no proof they belong or at least not the proof they wanted! However, I will simply say it is very difficult. We look forward to some comfortable motoring, Ford style, soon.

16

Footnote: What’s been happening at the Pointons over Winter? Well the V8 coupe has finally been finished. It’s been a love hate relationship for 18 years, and at times I wondered whether I would ever get it done! The BC special has gained a 4 speed box as the 3 speed I originally fitted did not suit the high overall gearing! The improvement was well worth the effort. Both Gaye and I hope to get out on more events in the future. Francis

Finished or completed. No English dictionary has been able to adequately explain the difference between these two words. In a recent linguistic competition held in London and attended by, supposedly, the best in the world, Samdar Balgobin, a Guyanese man, was the clear winner with a standing ovation which lasted over 5 minutes. The final question was: How do you explain the difference between COMPLETE and FINISHED in a way that is easy to understand? Some people say there is no difference between COMPLETE and FINISHED. Here is his astute answer: When you marry the right woman, you are COMPLETE. When you marry the wrong woman, you are FINISHED. And when the right one catches you with the wrong one, you are COMPLETELY FINISHED!!! He won a trip around the world and a case of 25 year old Scotch!

What to do with The "Donald"? Donald Trump goes on a fact-finding visit to Israel. While he is on a tour of Jerusalem he suffers a heart attack and dies. The undertaker tells the American Diplomats accompanying him, 'You can have him shipped home for $50,000, or you can bury him here, in the Holy Land for just $100.' The American Diplomats go into a corner and discuss for a few minutes. They come back to the undertaker and tell him they want Donald shipped home. The undertaker is puzzled and asks, 'Why would you spend $50,000 to ship him home, when it would be wonderful to be buried here and you would spend only $100? The American Diplomats replied, 'Long ago a man died here, was buried here, and three days later he rose from the dead. We just can't take the risk.' 18
