130th Masterton A&P Show The show is on Saturday 18th February. A special Founders lunch is being held for invited dignitaries and we have been invited to display a selection of our vehicles to honour the history of the Wairarapa. The lunch is being held in one of the historic halls that dates from WWII and, inside the hall, there will also be an exhibition of various memorabilia from past shows. The society is asking for approximately a dozen vehicles. Members attending, must arrive no later than 1.30pm on the day, and they would then be free to leave at a time of their choosing any time after 4pm. Reserved parking will be available right on the edge of the oval adjacent to the hall. The driver of each vehicle (plus one) would be entitled to free entry to the show. This is a great opportunity to show off your vehicle(s) and promote the club As this is a formal invitation we are inviting members to register their interest. Please phone or email me directly before 5th February if you are interested in being part of the display. Myrna Lane Phone: (06) 377 3064 or email: wandmlane@gmail.com. Planning a trip? Tony Haycock – a long-time VCC member and travel agent – specialises in taking small groups to Europe . The tours have a motoring theme but are definitely not “boys only”. The added bonus is that for every new booking made through Tony our branch will benefit by the sum of $200. So before booking your next holiday take a look at Tony’s website www.tonystour.nz or email Tony at tony@nztravelbrokers.co.nz or ring 021 662 441for more information. 8

From the Chair Happy New Year. I am enjoying a summer break. Sheila and I look forward to seeing you all at the many events planned for this year. Keep well and safe motoring. John Clark

January Club Captain’s Report The New Year started out in fine style with a big turnout for our annual Coastal Run. 34 cars from our club participated along with 9 cars from the Central Hawkes Bay and 3 cars from the Austin group making a total of 46 vehicles. All this shows that the club is in good heart. The event was put together by one of our Pahiatua members, Jim Chalmers, and featured a run through Pongaroa to the seaside settlement of Akitio with the choice of two return routes, one of which was over the scenic Rising Sun road. Weather for the day was perfect and we were able to park on the seafront grass for a picnic lunch. We also had the use of the local community centre hall if required. It was very interesting to be able to meet some of the Hawkes Bay members and compare notes. It seems they face the same problems that we do – aging membership. Thanks Jim for arranging the event and to Joan Southey for providing the delightful morning tea (scones with jam and cream and sandwiches) while we inspected Jim’s car collection. I rather fancy Jim’s magnificent 1948 Ford V8 sedan. I am looking forward to Val and Kevin Ball’s Remembrance Rally which promises to be a most interesting day. Gary Lang.

What is your vehicle really worth? Mossgreen-Webb’s auction of Roy Savages collection of classic cars was held at Southward’s Car Museum on 4 th December last year. Tim Johnston, Willie James and Rob Notley went along to take a look. A Buyer Premium of 15% + GST was added to the hammer price. All cars had a current registration and W.O.F No test driving or starting of the vehicles was allowed and any “viewing” (opening doors or bonnets) was only allowed under strict supervision. Further information could be sought by contacting Roy Savages mechanic. Coastal Run to Akitio—8th January 2017 Left: Morning tea at Jim Chalmer’s home in Pahiatua. I think Jim was “blown away” by the numbers who turned up!

Right: Cars and picnickers crowded the waterfront at Akitio. Joan Southey enjoys the day out. She must be thanked for the great morning tea provided at Jim’s place. Well done Joan!

Left: Tim and Sue Johnston enjoying lunch with friends. See their story later in this issue. Tim was driving his 1931 Ford Model A Delux Roadster.

12

Left: The Robbie’s Model A made friends with a very pretty Fiat driven by Wellington branch members.

Right: Hugh Hunter with his 1935 Morris 8 Sports. What have you lost Hugh?

Left: What a great turn out—cars of all shapes and sizes lined the grass verge. Tony counted 40 VCC vehicles. Ten CHB members brought cars and there was one from Manuwatu and the Fiat from Wellington. 13

The same car for 82 years! This person had a great start in life, an early exotic present. Mr. Allen Swift (born 1908 - died 2010) owned and drove the same car for 82 years. Can you imagine even having the same car for 82 years? Mr. Allen Swift ( Springfield , Massachusetts ) received this 1928 RollsRoyce Piccadilly-P1 Roadster from his father, brand new - as a graduation gift in 1928. He drove it up until his death ... At the age of 102. He was the oldest living owner of a car that was purchased new. It was donated to a Springfield museum after his death. It has 1,070,000 miles on it, still runs like a Swiss watch, dead silent at any speed and is in perfect cosmetic condition. 82 years - that's approximately 13,048 miles per year (1087 per month). 1,070,000 (that's miles not kilometres), is 1721998 kilometres! That's British engineering of a bygone era. I don't think they make them like this anymore. Thanks to Willis St Clair for this gem. (Editor)

Coastal Run to Akitio—8th January 2017 We left Tinui at 8am in the 1930 Model A Phaeton with 5 people aboard to meet at Jim Chalmers’ home in Pahiatua to view his collection of cars and have morning tea, which was most appreciated. We were joined by the Austin Club and Central Hawkes Bay Vintage car club, 40 cars in total not including a few moderns. Our route to Akitio was via Makuri and Pongaroa. The weather improved as we headed east thankfully as we were in an open car. Akitio is a beautiful beach. It was very hot where we had our picnic lunch on the beach front under the Norfolk Pine trees. Willie and Sharyn James had a problem when they went to get their lunch out of the boot of the MG. The handle came off and while Willie was looking for a piece of number eight wire Francis Pointon came to the rescue and managed to open it. Some cars returned to Pongaroa via River Road. We had the option of returning to Pahiatua the way we came or over the Towai Rd/Rising Sun Rd. Our party returned to Masterton on Highway 52 after a couple of pints at the Pongaroa Pub. A most enjoyable day, to another coastal spot in our Northern Wairarapa. Sue and Tim Johnston
