VACANCIES CLUB CAPTAIN
MAGAZINE EDITOR
THE HOLDERS OF THE ABOVE POSITIONS ARE STEPPING ASIDE and are not available for re-election to those positions for the coming year. They intend however to be available to give assistance to anyone who is filling those positions. The Club Captain position includes being approachable to Club members, maintaining standards within the Club and ensuring the Rally Routes are correct and appropriate for the type of rally. A small honorarium is paid for this position. The Magazine Editor position, I believe is probably the most important position within the Club. How else do the majority of our members keep up to date with - What the Club is doing; What invitations have been received for vehicles to be displayed or paraded; What Rallies/types of Rallies are coming up for their participation etc...etc... A small honorarium is paid for this position. To me the Magazine is the glue that holds us all together. I cannot overstress the importance of this vacancy being filled.
URGENT WANTED:
Club Captain.
WANTED: Magazine Editor.
Increase your association with the Club by making it known that you would like to be nominated for one of these positions. If you make it known to any one of the committee members named in the Magazine or any other active member of the Club, they will ensure your wish is actioned. Looking forward to seeing you all at the A.G.M. In friendship, John Clark. 6
Keep Well.
Club Captain’s Report Our event for May was the Motorcycle Reliability Run organised by Beth and Neville Taylor and included an overnight stop at Akitio Beach in the Community Centre. Details of this event will appear elsewhere in this magazine. Coming up in June we have Tony and Myrna Lane’s Winter Wander which will include lunch at an interesting venue. A public relations innovation from VCC head office is a National Vintage Car Club Day on Sunday August 27th. This is to be held in conjunction with a National Daffodil Cancer Day. The idea is that each VCC club will hold an event (Cruise, Rally or Gymkhana) and the general public will be invited to participate in any vehicle (not necessarily VCC compliant). It is suggested that other motoring clubs be also invited to participate. There will be more information about this in due course. I shall not be continuing as Club Captain after the AGM. Having been in the role for five years it is time for new blood in the position. We have been fortunate in having an influx of new and active members of late so there is scope to introduce new ideas in the role. The basic duties of Club Captain include the checking of all routes and making sure that the requirements of the VCC are met and that the route instructions are correct and easily followed. This normally takes 3 to 4 hours once a month and can be carried out in a shorter time frame than the actual event. Other Tasks include a monthly report for the magazine as well as organising the Annual Club Captain’s Rally. The role also involves maintaining the club attendance register from which a winner is chosen for the Torque – Hudson Trophy. I am very grateful for all the assistance and support given to me by the committee and members over the last 5 years. Gary Lang. 7
From your Editor….. I regret to inform members that I am resigning as editor of this magazine. I feel it is time for “new blood”. Someone must come forward at the forthcoming AGM and take over the “reins”. If you would like to take on the job you will have my utmost support in your endeavours. Details of the job description can be found on page 16. Most months it takes about 10-15 hours of my time. It can be very rewarding and I have come into contact with far more members than I would have done otherwise. So, if you feel like a challenge, and enjoy listening to people, put up your hand and give it a go. Myrna Lane
MAY CLUBNIGHT The feature of our May club night was a movie screening of the film ‘The Great Race’ Unfortunately at 160 minutes the film was considerably longer than anticipated so the showing was terminated at the halfway mark when we adjourned for supper. It is planned to show the second half of the film at our July club night. Gary Lang

Winter Reliability Motorbike Run - 13/14th May 2017 Seventeen motorcyclists and the support team assembled at the clubrooms to participate in the annual reliability run that this year took us to Akitio. Despite the threat of ‘Cyclone Donna’ the weather remained mostly fine with a few showers around Eketahuna but not enough to dampen the spirits of the proud owners of the various motorbikes largely from the Wairarapa but also a contingent from the Wellington region. The first part of the run took us via Alfredton to Mangatainoka where a hearty lunch was enjoyed by all. Then it was off to Akitio via Pongaroa where the only mishap for the whole weekend resulted in Willis St Clair winning the trophy. The huddle of seven motorcycle mates all working to do running repairs on Willis’s bike to keep him in the event is a heart warming sight. The hospitality at the Akitio Community centre was superb with a delicious evening meal prepared and lots of tales and laughter shared over a drink or two. Sunday morning dawned clear and crisp and the ride back to Eketahuna was stunning with the autumn colours at their best. Once again, despite the age of some of the bikes, there were no mishaps so everyone returned to their homes after a great weekend. The tail-end Charlottes trailer was not required…..which is always a good sign! Willis (87) is the club's oldest active member. He rode the whole weekend with his throttle cable taped to the twist grip after the nipple pulled out. Kevin Ball

Wairarapa Veteran Rally—23rd April Following the demise of the Triangular Rally – an event which was shared by the Wellington, Horowhenua and Wairarapa branches, our few veteran vehicle owners were canvassed to gauge support for holding a veteran event on an annual basis here. I am pleased to say the response was 100% in favour. At short notice permission was granted from our committee and the word was spread to our neighbouring branches. Once again the response was positive and hence on the 23rd April the inaugural Wairarapa Veteran Rally was held. Of our fourteen members who have veteran vehicles, nine entered the run and we had support from the Hawkes Bay, Central Hawkes Bay, Wanganui and Manawatu branches and they swelled our numbers to twenty entrants. We were privileged to have the presence of our National President, Diane Quarrie and her husband Geoff. We gathered on the Sunday morning at the Greytown Rugby Clubrooms for a cuppa and briefing and the first vehicle got away at 9.30. The rally route which headed north out of Greytown, turned to the east as Waihakeke Road through to Kokotau and then south through Longbush and on to Martinborough for lunch. Martinborough was a busy place on the day with other events in progress at the time. The afternoon run took us back to Greytown and finished at the the Cobblestones Museum complex where the parked vehicles made a very impressive backdrop in the lovely grounds. We all enjoyed afternoon tea and all the chatter and socialising that takes place at these gatherings. Entrants were asked to complete a survey which would give guidance to future organisers and the results were: The event should continue. April was the month most favoured to hold the run. It should be just a one day event. Two wheel brake vintage vehicles may be included. The event should be non competitive. All in all it was a most satisfying event with the weather providing a perfect day, which, in turn, left a lot of happy members. Will Holmes 12

NZ STAG CLUB IN MASTERTON Over the Easter weekend we had 28 Triumph Stags visiting the Wairarapa from North Auckland to Gore and this took place after 18 months of planning and over a lovely spell of weather, thank goodness, where many were able to go on runs with their roof down. On Friday afternoon we enjoyed a run to Pointon’s garage then early Saturday we headed to Castlepoint. Many entrants had never been to Castlepoint before let alone even visited Masterton! It was windy but the lighthouse walk was an ideal challenge for some who wanted to experience the opportunity to see it. We then headed back to Tinui Café for an organised lunch and visit to the craft shop. This was followed by a visit to Peter Jackson’s Aviation Centre at the airport and then back to Masterton Motor Lodge for dinner where all the stag club members were staying. On Sunday we met and headed off early at 9.30am down to busy Greytown for the ladies to wander around for an hour or so to do some retail therapy then headed down the main road to Martinborough for a light platter lunch at Colombo Vineyard. We then drove around some of the vineyards before heading along Ponatahi Road through lovely rolling countryside to Stonehenge for an arranged talk and tour. This was followed by another break in Greytown to shop again or have a coffee at the White Swan then it was on to the Gladstone Country Pub for dinner and a bit of fun. Monday morning came far too quickly for all who had enjoyed our local towns and the lovely car runs we had organised. It was all over until the next Stag get-together in Christchurch in two years’ time which will also be the Club’s 35 year celebration. We local members, Murray & Robyn and Kevin & Bev, had our Stags spic and span to match up with all the other models of various colours and age and we had a very enjoyable weekend showing off “our place” in the Wairarapa as most had not been here before. Sean is the vicar of a Protestant parish on the border of Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland, and Patrick is the priest at the Roman Catholic Church across the road. One day they are seen together, erecting a sign which says, "THE END IS NEAR. TURN YOURSELF AROUND NOW, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE." As a car speeds past them, the driver leans out his window and yells, "Leave people alone, you religious nutters. We don't need your lectures." From around the next curve they hear screeching tyres and a big splash. Shaking his head, Father Patrick says "Dat's da terd one dis mornin'." "Yaa," Sean agrees, then adds, "Do ya tink maybe da sign should just say "BRIDGE CLOSED"?

BANGERS AND BEERS 30th April This was our third Bangers and Beers and with 20 (19 men and 1 woman) in attendance, the best supported yet. The first arrival was at 1.45 pm and the last departees left a few minutes before 5 pm. Throughout the afternoon everyone mingled, talked to each other (mainly car talk but that didn’t exclude other subjects), took the opportunity to browse the parts section and looked over cars in the car park. Many stories were told and technical matters discussed. Now that we are entering the colder months banger cooking has been replaced by afternoon tea. Tea, coffee and chocolate biscuits were on hand and Ray Lester even arrived with two plates of pikelets. Ray told me he had cooked them himself but was unable to say it with a straight face so ‘thank you’ Frances for supplying them, they proved to be very popular. Even the beer aspect only has a very moderate following with those who partake doing so responsibly and obviously mindful of having to drive home afterwards. The focal point of this gathering was the car body (circa 1928-30) that Hugh Hunter, Paul Furkert and I had collected from a Longbush farm. It was a matter of ‘guess the make’. Hugh is fairly confident it is an Essex but others weren’t convinced. The hood fits the body but it’s a long one with some believing it would have had a ‘straight 8’ under it. The louvres on the sides had us puzzled – they face the wrong way – but someone was clever enough (and I’m sorry that I can’t remember who) to come up with a logical solution to that one. So now we’ve had 3 of these meets and they are going well with a number of positive and pleasing comments being made. The mood at them is very casual, relaxed and friendly. Everyone talks to each other and it is especially pleasing to see new members (and intending ones) being welcomed, engaging in conversation and merging into the group. For those of you who enjoy talking and looking at cars and bikes etc these meetings are for you, so come along and join us. We hope to have the basis for a ‘special’ (see article on this in last month’s magazine) on hand for our next one, to provide something to discuss and we’ll need lots of ideas and suggestions. David Hunter 18
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's the latest project taking shape in the basement of the clubrooms, at the hands of the Bangers and Beer crew. The remains of this Hudson Super Six was given to the branch and the aim is to utilise components from the parts department to build an off road vehicle. Obviously a long-term project. Watch this space. Thanks David and Kevin for the report. Editor The date for the next Bangers and Beers afternoon hasn't yet been finalised, but will probably be late June / early July. Once a date is set, as usual, we'll send out an email to let interested members know. In the meantime David and team are still searching for a suitable chassis for the "Gymkhana Special". One possibility they are investigating is swapping ("upcycling") our Essex body for a rolling chassis. As mentioned in the previous newsletter, if anyone could help us source parts for the "Gymkhana Special" (chassis, engine, gearbox etc.), please get in touch with David.
