Chairmans chatter Well another month has zoomed by and the new editor is on my case for a story. Our recent club nights guest Doug Curtis had us all having a chuckle or two with his lifetime of stories having been brought up on the East coast above Gisborne. He trained as a mechanic and went on to service local government vehicles. This lead onto lecturing and training of young mechanics for 30 years or so at the Wellington Politech along the way having a lot fun pulling peoples legs. ( Did this result in some long legged mechanics ? Ed). He is also a very accomplished musician and artist. Thank you Doug for a great night. A reminder to all members to support the VCC National Daffodil day on the 27th Aug. Any sort of vehicles are welcome at 10 am at the Martinborough Square. Sharyn and I have been playing with small cars with our grand children this past weekend whilst the Gravel challenge was in progress. Congratulation to Francis Pointon for being the winner. Thats it from me Willie

t 1952 Triumph TRW
This bike is a 500cc vertical twin side valve, the only twin cylinder side valve Triumph ever built. It has a rigid frame and a dry weight of 129kg. Originally designed by Bert Hopwood ( of Norton Dominator fame ) in 1942, it was finally launched in 1948 as competition to the side valve being designed by BSA for military use. With good ground clearance of 6 inches and engine protection as standard, the bike is suited to its role of dispatch riding, convoy escort and reconnaissance . With a compression ratio of 5:1 the bike will gently cruise at about 50 to 60 mph although does rattle a little at higher speeds ! It does about 45mpg. It has a 4 speed gear box which like all Triumph boxes likes a gentle slow movement when changing. The unusual Solex carburettor was initially troublesome, but since Barry Jessop worked his magic on it , is now trouble free. Overall there were about 15000 made, most of which were sent to the armies of Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Pakistan, the British army favouring the BSA on which its mechanics had been trained. This bike was found in Taupo having been used off-road to reach fishing spots in the area. At the time of purchase it had sat in a shed for many years unused. However, it had begun its life in Australia from where it it was shipped to Nelson. Its history is well known and the current mileage of roughly 3000 is thought to be genuine. It has recently been overhauled with a new cylinder head, pistons, valves and valve guides and although it is still running-in following this work, will be ready for the Gold Medal rally later this year as well as the next gravel road run ! Roll on summer !
NOTE FROM EDITOR Contributions to the news letter would be gratefully accepted from members. If possible please don’t send them in PDF format as this format is hard to adapt to fit the publishing programme we use. Many thanks. Jim 6
Poor Donald Donald Trump met with the Queen of England and he asked her, "Your Majesty, how do you run such an efficient government? Are there any tips you could give me?" "Well," replied the Queen, "the most important thing is to surround yourself with intelligent people." Trump frowned, and then asked, "But how do I know the people around me are really intelligent?" The Queen took a sip of tea. "Oh, that's easy; you just ask them to answer an intelligent riddle." The Queen pushed a button on her intercom. "Please send Theresa May in here, would you?" Theresa May walked into the room and said, "Yes, Your Majesty?" The Queen smiled and said, "Answer me this, if you would, Theresa. Your mother and father have a child. It is not your brother and it is not your sister. Who is it?" Without pausing for a moment, Theresa May answered, "That would be me." "Yes! Very good," said the Queen. Trump went back home to ask Mike Pence the same question. “ Mike, answer this for me. Your mother and your father have a child. It's not your brother and it's not your sister. Who is it?" "I'm not sure," said Pence. "Let me get back to you on that one." He went to his advisers and asked everyone, but none could give him an answer. Finally, Pence ran in to Sarah Palin in a restaurant the next night. Pence asked, "Sarah, can you answer this for me? Your mother and father have a child and it's not your brother or your sister. Who is it?" Sarah Palin answered right back, "That's easy, it's me!" Pence smiled, and said, "Thanks!" Pence then went back to speak with Trump. "Say, I did some research and I have the answer to that riddle. It's Sarah Palin!" Trump got up, stomped over to Pence, and angrily yelled, "No, you idiot! It's Theresa May!" ..AND THAT MY FRIENDS IS PRECISELY WHAT'S GOING ON AT THE WHITE HOUSE

The Inaugural Gravel Road Challenge What a fun event! Francis & I have been Wairarapa VCC members since 1980 and we actually drove on some roads we’ve never been on before. That was the beauty of using “No Exit Roads”. Yes it was a challenge as conditions on some of the roads were muddy & narrow, plus there was a “good” ford to cross, but given the weather this winter, that was to be expected. What we didn’t have to put up with, were dust and corrugations which are actually worse. A small turnout of participants with the Austin 7 special the oldest, through to Morris 8, our Ford V8 pickup then classic 60’s & 70’s Holden, Morris Minor, Wolseley, Valiant, Mini & moderns, plus the organisers Landrover. What was common to all though was they were there to enjoy the event, and judging by the big grins and chat, everyone had a great day. We even had an entrant come over from the Manawatu VCC and he thought it was brilliant. The views from the top of Tea Creek Road were amazing – and brought back memories of Francis racing his Twin Cam Escort up the hillclimb. Mangatarere Valley was really interesting, narrow & winding with bush & trees & river very close, and the houses at The French Village.....how could anyone live there all year round? The fast flowing river to ford was really interesting too – wasn’t it Alec?! Then across Carterton to the east and open motoring on a mix of tarseal and gravel. We had to keep a tally of our mileage travelled on gravel, in some cases up and back the same road, so navigators had to do a bit of work too. Thanks to Paul for a great run – and to all members who weren’t there, you missed a great event. Make sure you take part next year........BECAUSE......... Francis & I are organising it!!!!! Bangers & Beer July 2017 Something interesting turned up at the July Bangers and Beer. Willie James arrived in his ute towing a trailer containing the back half of a circa 1947 Hillman 10. Inside the body was a generator mounted on a frame and powered by the engine that was originally in the front half of the body. The intention was to use the engine in our “Bradford Special”, if practical. Willie’s father had constructed the device, to tow around his farm as a portable source of electrical power for drilling and welding etc. Willie had inherited it but for the last 20 years or so it has sat neglected, so the condition of the motor was unknown. It was for us to dis-unknow it, if you know what I mean. First mission was to remove the generator set from the body which wasn’t easy. In fact, it was almost as if the body had grown around it. However, many hands make light work and with lots of pushing, heaving, head scratching (and no swearing, which was surprising) we eventually separated the one from the other. Next thing was to see if the engine turned over and to facilitate this, it came with a crank handle. Alec being by far the youngest of us and therefore the fittest and strongest (or probably the least likely to have a cardiac arrest from over exertion) engaged the handle, have a mighty heave – and bent the handle!
10
…………..continued The engine is locked solid. The good thing is that this has provided us with our next mission – take the head off and see if it can be freed. Willie tells us that it was fully reconditioned as part of the generator build so it may be usable, or maybe not. We’ll find out. Of course there were other diversions. Some turned their attention to the now stripped Bradford van. Herb arrived in his 1921 Dodge pickup which must have attracted a lot of attention on its drive down from Masterton. It got our attention too. Robert Notley had his Daimler V8 (Jag Mk 2 shape) and what a nice car that is. The sort of thing that Morris Minor owners like me look at and think they really should have something more exotic. Several others bought their club vehicles along as well which is all part of what we are trying to promote. And then the afternoon was gone. It’s funny how time flies when we are enjoying ourselves. But there is another one soon (August 20) so we can do it all again. These get togethers are still evolving and we are listening to what the attendees want. As the warmer weather approaches for example, we’ll probably finish with a sit down, a beer (but not too many) and discussion. This is when the stories come out, the laughing continues and we go home happy. Or as one club member of a number of years membership told me: “this is the sort of thing I joined the club for”. Attendees were: Paul Furkert Andrew Dittmer Herb Fox Alec O’Hara
Hugh Hunter Willie James David Hunter Robert Noffey

From your Club Captain The July club night had a smaller than average attendance to watch the 2nd half of the movie ‘The Great Race’. We watched the 1 st half at the May club night but when it was realised it was of particularly long length the unanimous decision was to stop halfway. A light hearted bit of fun starring Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood which had the ladies in the gathering (well, some of them at least) taking particular interest when Curtis took to getting around bare chested, I noted one call (female voice) from the audience to him to get the rest of his clothing off, which had me shocked, I believed our members to be of refined character and above that sort of thing……………. Kevin Ball had undertaken the organisation of the Margaret Gee Memorial Rally and started to put together a Garage Raid. Unfortunately, health problems meant he could not continue and suddenly the job fell to me. Thankfully several other member quickly offered support and practical help which I very much appreciated. Our Bangers and Beers gathering (the name was thrown up light heartedly by Ray Whitcomb) when the gathering was an idea of mine that I was discussing at the clubrooms after a rally. Now that we’ve moved from early evening bbqs to winter afternoons, there is no banger (sausages) cooking and, at the last one, no beer drinking. I’m thinking of changing to a more appropriate name and intend canvassing the attendees at the next get together for their thoughts. Also after deciding to make these gatherings on the 4 th Sunday of the month almost straight away it was seen to conflict with the National Cancer Day event so had to be shifted for August. When Summer eventually comes around again we may shift it for the hotter months. All forthcoming dates will be in the Zenith of course. Another job Kevin Ball had put his hand up to organise is the National Cancer Day event. Andy Dittmer was asked if he would like to take over when Kevin had to drop out and not only was there no hesitation but he has thrown himself into the task with enthusiasm. This is a most worthwhile initiative (you can read about it in this magazine as it takes shape) which will raise the profile of the Club and portray us in a positive, community active, way. We all need to get in behind it and participate if possible. David Hunter 12
New Members Rally Once again we are encouraging our new members to organise a rally with the help of a committee member. So, “New Members”, please put your thinking caps on and we will be contacting you all to get your input. You all enjoy driving your vehicles, so………… What sort of roads do you enjoy most? Do you like exploring and finding remote places? Would you be interested in finding how economical your vehicle really is? Do you like a mental challenge? (Observation questions). Do you like to work against a clock? (Timed distances). Do you enjoy the social aspect of a “picnic lunch”? (Even at the club rooms). The route would be about 60-80 miles in length and can include town or country driving. It can be a whole day with a lunch stop or just an afternoon. Do you know of an interesting place or collection we could visit. Please give it some thought and we’ll contact you soon. Wairarapa Branch Committee

Wairarapa Branch History: Our first 50 years 1968-2018 Long-time members of our branch will be well aware that I have ben beavering away recording the history of the Wairarapa Branch since its inception. Time has raced away as it does, and with the delightful influx of new members we’ve enjoyed in recent years, I want to advise you of this document, and to give you a brief over-view of its content.. “TO KNOW YOUR PAST IS TO SEE YOUR FUTURE” What a home truth that is for all of us, and when you apply this to the Branch history, oh how apt it is! The person responsible for having the foresight to recognise the importance of a club’s history was one of our long standing members who invited Frances Elwin, Life Member and wife of the late Roy Elwin, to approach me with the request that I put pen to paper and create such a document, so important I’m sure to all of us who recognise its existence as we move further into the future. Having spent 90% of my working life in libraries both in New Zealand and Australia, I knew what a monumental task this would become. (As an aside, I understand that at lest one other—if not two members—had in the past considered taking the task on, but backed off when they realised the enormity of presenting a true and complete record of the branch, its members, and 50 years of motoring activity in this district.) The Elwin Family commitment to vintage motoring dates back to the “Rex Porter era” when Rex had encouraged a then-single young man to become his navigator in the veteran De Dion Bouton car which was his pride and joy. On 10th February 1962 the Wairarapa AA celebrated their 50th jubilee with a run to Tauherenikau Racecourse where a muster of 36 veteran and vintage vehicles put on a picnic day parade for the general public, an event our first Branch Secretary (and current member) Graham Gordon, enjoyed attending in his 1926 Ford New Beauty. This event was followed up with a letter sent on 11 March 1963, to all known Wairarapa folk with similar interests, suggesting that a Wairarapa group be formed to look after members” interests in this 14
area , and organise local events. To this, locals had to travel out of the region to join in with the likes of Wanganui and Wellington regions for contact with the vintage movement. The meeting was held on 20 March 1963, in H.J. Jones & Co Garage, Lincoln Road, Masterton. This resulted with the Wairarapa enthusiasts assembling again on 6 June 1968 when a SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING was held to officially form the Wairarapa Branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand, and elected its fist committee. From this time onwards, our membership increased as others became involved, and as they say, “the rest is history.” Wairarapa Branch is currently enjoying an influx of eager young members who will, I’m sure, carry on the legacy through the next 50 years .. I say BRING IT ON!! From a personal point of view, I would like to see the Wairarapa Branch History taken to June 2018, fifty years from it’s inception. This would allow six months for printing and publishing, making a great Christmas gift for family and friends. So, Wairarapa members, what do you think? MAUREEN BULL, wife of the late Glen Bull, mother of four who all enjoy their vintage motoring. PS New members: I’d like to include photos of your vehicles. Phone me on 06 3774490, or drop by 9A Hogg Crescent, Masterton and deliver them personally. I look forward to seeing you

Gravel Road Challenge 13 August 2017 It was something new and would it work? Would it find enough support from our members to be viable and even become an annual event as Paul desires. Could a gravel road rally be successful? The cars gathered in the clubrooms car park on the Sunday morning and when they began to depart promptly at 10 am there were 12 of them. An especially welcome entrant was Brian Robinson who had driven over from Palmerston in his immaculate little Wolseley. Brian had read about the gravel rally in our magazine (on line) and the appeal of it was enough for him to make the journey. We knew well beforehand the route which started off with us heading for the hills. First gravel road was Tea Creek Road followed by the Maungatere Road which was a first for some of us. It was windy and windy (a narrow twisty road and very strong wind) and wet. After 11 kilometres an obstacle appeared in the form of a fjord. Well, it’s supposed to be a fjord but in reality it was a river and a fast – flowing one too. It was probably surprising it claimed only one victim. Alec O’Hara took a run at it in his Mini with momentum getting him through but with drowned electrics halting him on the other side. Paul had a towrope at the ready, pulled the Mini clear, then with a bit of attention the Mini was off again. There was a bonus for Alec though. A missing bung on the uncarpeted floor allowed a fountain of mountain water to enter the interior and wash the mud off his boots. Every cloud has a silver lining, as they say. The road finished soon after the fjord at a flat parking area. However this was mostly mud which made turning around something of a challenge especially for tail-end-Charlie (that was me) who if got stuck was about to be left on his own. Fortunately it didn’t happen (close, though) and we were off on our way out of the valley again. Pragmatism meant Paul attached his towrope onto the Mini for the return crossing of the fjord. Then after the return journey of Hoeke Road we headed off to Carterton and clearer skies. Over on the East side of the town the cars were kicking up dust on the unsealed roads which made quite a contrast to what we’d encountered in the hills a short time previously. 18
We finished at the clubrooms for lunch and submitting answer papers for there was a competitive element to the rally. It was to estimate the number of miles travelled and how much of it was on gravel. Paul had the correct figures with “No correspondence entered into” as he quickly told us, and had established the winners. Now, as part of organising the rally, Paul had decreed that the winner had to organise next year’s gravel challenge. At the briefing, Francis Pointon spoke up, telling us he had actually designed a gravel road run a few years previously but had never got to put it into action and he was happy to organise the next gravel rally, letting the winner of this one off the hook. As so Paul announced the results. 3rd equal were the Byrnes and Groves. 2nd were the Goodins and in 1st place the Pointons. So the irony – the winner had already volunteered to organise the next Rally, which was supposed to happen anyway. The mood at the lunch table (the numbers allowed us to all sit together) was ebullient. Was the rally a success? The answer was definitely “yes”. I had already heard Barry say “we need to have more of these” and that seemed to be the thinking of the others. Someone thought to thank Paul for organising it, we all voiced agreement and put our hands together in the usual way. It was more than politeness – we really meant it.
