Chairman’s Report Let’s start off with Happy Christmas and to warn you not to look for a RIVET in January as it’s on holiday and will return in February with news of the fantastic times we had over the holidays Now onto thanks, thanks for the volunteers who joined the Christmas Parade and helped raise our profile within the community and also those who strolled, or rather ran, alongside the cars distributing The Vintage Weekend Programme. And, as you can see in the photos, those who sneaked a ride! Thanks to all who assisted the organisation of the Christmas Party and also those who attended, it was a very pleasant afternoon, more than can be said for the spring weather. Thanks to Stephen and Claudia Anne Voss for a first class Ladies’ run showing how you can put on an interesting run within the city limits. Apparently it was a close thing but victory went Hinemoa and her navigator Ed who now have the dubious pleasure of entertaining us all next year. Don’t forget the Gumboot Rally on the 1st in Taihape. For those of you who have not participated in previous years can I suggest you make the effort? It is a fabulous occasion with our fellow Wanganui VCC members and you will be made welcome, I can assure you. Details are in this RIVET. You will all have noticed I am sure that our January meeting is on the 11th January, at 5pm, it’s a picnic and

it’s at Ed’s Autobarn but is being hosted / sponsored by Evan Forsyth, in fact he also providing the meat, how kind of him. Please contact any committee member if you intend to join us as Evan needs some idea of numbers. There will be a short run prior to the BBQ Linda would like to point out that the first activity of the National Veteran and Burma Rallies will be on the Friday evening 20th January and it’s a BBQ dinner at the club rooms. All members and entrants to both Rallies are invited but you need to fill out an entry form, even if you are not rallying and complete the Friday BBQ Dinner section. You also have to pay $10 per head for the privilige of eating this fine food and and meeting these fabulous people. But much more important is to get your entry form filled in and paid for. We are expecting high numbers as there are two rallies this year and entry’s up to now are encouraging. Please also, if you cannot Rally, contact Jim O’Neill and offer your services as we need all the help we can get. You may notice I have included a, “Recipe of the Month” by popular request, (Not Mine)! Last, but not least, many of you saw Linda O’Keeff presented with The Willing Horse”. None of us know how much effort she has put in on our behalf but if we did it would have been made in gold. Bloody well deserved Linda.

Peter

From the desk of Jim O’Neill, Wanganui VCC Club Captain We have been approached by a group organising the AOS, Armed Offenders Squad, reunion on the 18 Feb 2017. Details are not yet finalised but they will start around 10am and will continue into the afternoon. The idea is we will provide transport and stay with the group throughout the day. Please contact me if you are interested in joining this occasion.

Mrs Beaton’s One Stage Victoria Sandwich Ingredients fat for greasing 150g/5oz self raising flour pinch of salt 150g/5oz soft margarine 150g/5oz caster sugar 3 eggs

1.Line and grease two 18cm/7inch sandwich tins 2.Set the oven at 180c/350f/gas4 3.Put all ingredients in a mixing bowl and stir. 4.Beat until smooth, allowing 2 - 3 minutes by hand or 1 - 1 and a half minutes electric mixer 5.Divide evenly between tins, level surface 6.Bake 25 - 30 minutes then cool, fill and decorate

I used butter ‘cos I didn’t have any margarine. I also made double the quantity for a high cake and cooked in 2 tins. Just tested for done. Enjoy!

Restoration of the Year 2016

Winner of the Motorcycle of The Year was, Yes you have guessed it, Brett London with his absolutely fabulous Triumph Trident 1975 T150. This was a genuine barn find and even Brett was unsure as to whether it could be brought back to its former glory, no doubts now. Well done Brett and see you next year.

A true, no honest it is, story from Vernon Ballance, one of our more recent Branch members Was filling up Victoria Vauxhall at a local petrol station today on route to the November Ladies run outing and a Toyota shopping basket pulled in behind at the pumps and the driver an affable chap, in his late 20's wife and child on board, expressed amazement at her age and asked questions. I responded and all went well until after the petrol tank was full and I started to add from a smaller container, the upper cylinder lubricant to compensate for the lack of lead. Affable chap then said , "Oh, two stroke."

Club Run, 13 December to Richmond and Heather Hardings, “Toy Shed”. He is familiar to many of us as we often notice that slighly different sound above us and look up to see what’s going on up there. Well we are very lucky as it’s either the1941 de Havilland Tiger Moth, hard to confuse as it’s a bi plane painted bright Yellow or it’s a Spitfire with a very distinctive engine note. (Chev as we were informed during the talk) Richmond and his wife Heather welcomed us at the hanger door and we were made so welcome it was like being at home. (Not really as my shed is a tip and less than one tenth the size of theirs) Chairs and tables were there for our use and the jug was hot. Ditch, as it seems he is known to his friends, gave us a very interesting talk on his two planes and their history but also on the story behind Wanganui Aero Works and his life long involvement with it and Wanganui Aero industry in general. We knew this was always going to be and interesting visit but 30+ cars and 70+ attendees surpassed our expectations.

Ditch with the other star of the show, The Spitfire, all ready to go!

Vintage car work skills vital While the future of appreciating a grand old vintage car is never in doubt, being able to restore them and keep them running sweetly may have a bit of a question mark over it. "The people who work on these cars are getting older and they are the ones with all the special skills," the new national president of the New Zealand Vintage Car Club, Hastings woman Diane Quarrie, said. She is only the second woman in the organisation's long and colourf ul history to be elected to the president's role, and she said one issue she wanted to raise for discussion with the various regional clubs was a way of preventing the disappearance of the special skills required to work on vintage cars. "We don't want to see the day when no one can work on them." She said fears that the old skills were disappearing amidst ageing restorers and mechanics in the UK led to the introduction of special apprenticeship schemes being introduced for mechanically minded younger people at the equivalent of our polytechnic institutes. "It would be good to be able to do something similar here - to get something like that up and running." While establishing something like that here was a long-shot it was something she hoped would be considered. "Because New Zealand has a really strong skill base for working on vintage cars and a lot of overseas people send their vehicles here to be restored."The skills of "old style" panelbeating, painting, upholstery and mechanics were unique, she said Mrs Quarrie has long been fascinated by vintage cars, which went back to the vehicles her parents had. "Growing up we always had older cars because we weren't financially well off." And when she met her husband Geoff the love of vintage vehicles stepped up a notch as he was a big fan and had a couple. They have had several through the years and her current favourite is the 1923 Studebaker roadster, although for "everyday" driving she fires up her classic 1966 Triumph Spitfire. It too qualifies for the club - as cars just 30 years or older now qualify. About 30 years she joined the Hawke's Bay branch of the New Zealand Vintage Car Club and was chair of it for five years. She also took a place on the committee of the national body, which has more than 8500 members, and was there for eight years - with the move into the president's chair arriving after the former president recently decided to stand down. She was endorsed by him and went on to take up the role. Mrs Quarrie said is was largely a position of governance - of overseeing events and issues, and one issue she said needed plenty of focus was legislative changes set out by the Land Transport Safety Association. "We have to ensure new regulations which come in do not effect us and do not mean some cars have to go off the road - we have to be vigilant." She said New Zealand was lucky compared to some countries, including Australia. As well as requiring log books, vintage cars were generally only given permission to use many roads when on official club runs or events. On the horizon is one of the events she has come to love - the Tremains Art Deco Weekend where hundreds of vintage car enthusiasts gather for an international-class display of vehicles. "We were part of the very first one more than 20 years ago ... there were six of us." Article from Hawks Bay Today reporter Roger Moroney
